West Tennessee Dedric has achieved many goals as a bas- OUTDOORS ketball player such as being a star member of with Ray Jones Haywood High School state championship Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com basketball team. or 731-694-8614 He played for Eastern Kentucky of the Ohio Valley Conference and led the team in scoring as a freshman and once scored three free throws with no time left and the team down by 2 points to win the game. He played for Illinois State Red Birds of the Missouri Valley Conference and was the top three- point scorer during a stint on that team. Most recently he scored 32 points in a game, the most points in a single game for Tennessee State University 2021-22 season basketball team. However, he had never caught a bass until he made the big shot with his rod and reel to land that first bass and add it to his list of accomplishments. After successfully spending most of his time dedicated to his basketball career he is now a Grad Student/Athlete and has added bass fishing in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee to his long list of fun activities. Just as he has that touch with a basketball it looks like his has a touch with his fishing skills too. PHOTO IS DEDRIC BOYD WITH A GOOD BASS.

Suspect identified in Thursday shooting, police pursuit in east Jackson Cont’d from page 1

While responding, documents show that an officer was flagged down by an individual who claimed he had been shot at by someone driving a gold Saturn, which was still in the area. According to a report, the officer activated his blue lights and sirens and began pursuing the vehicle, which refused to stop. The officer stated during the pursuit, the Saturn reached speeds exceeding 65-70 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone, failed to stop at a red light, and almost collided with multiple vehicles. The pursuit ended at a dead end on Richmond Street, where officers determined Hinton was the driver. According to court documents, a minor was also in the front passenger seat of the car. A report states that officers discovered an AR-15 rifle and multiple shell casings inside the vehicle. Both were taken into custody pending an investigation. After speaking with the victim, investigators determined Hinton was the ex-boyfriend of the victim’s girlfriend. She and the victim stated they were leaving Royal Arms Apartments in separate cars when Hinton began following them and firing shots. Hinton is charged with evading arrest and attempted first degree murder, and is currently in custody at the Madison County jail. 06-09-22 CSENEWS P.4

And Your Point is . . . Teaching Context About Life Daryl Hubbard accuses DA Jody Pickens of Malicious Prosecution and Judicial Misconduct

During the trial, once again, the victim vehemently denied giving her any money, and the Assistant District Attorney, Al Earls, called his own witness, which is also the victim, a stupid liar. Mr. Pickens knew that there was no theft, but issued the indictment anyway. On June 4, 2020 District Attorney, Jody Pickens, (r) had a Jackson City Court employee, Ms. Shenile Ward, arrested on four felony counts; two counts of forgery and two counts for official misconduct that involved a theft of property charge. On May 24, 2019, The Tennessee Comptroller’s office interviewed the victim, Mr. Bobby Randle and when asked directly about paying money to City Court, he stated that he did not give money to anyone at Jackson City Court due the Judge declaring him indigent. Fourteen months later, the District Attorney, despite this knowledge, still decided to send four Sheriff Deputies to arrest Ms. Ward while she was at her place of employment in a blatant attempt to embarrass her in front of her peers and employees. During the trial, once again, the victim vehemently denied giving her any money, and the Assistant District Attorney, Al Earls, called his own witness, which is also the victim, a stupid liar. Mr. Pickens knew that there was no theft, but issued the indictment anyway. Mr. Pickens should be charged with malicious prosecution and judicial misconduct. The District Attorney’s office, despite the evidence, has decided to not indict whites who have been accused of serious violations, but chose to indict a black mother of three with four felonies, despite the fact that that his office KNEW that she did not take any money! Daryl Hubbard

One of the aspects I enjoy about my job as an educator is that usually I have an opportunity to introduce students to what they will encounter in life after school. I try to emphasize the importance of education and how it can enhance potential outcomes for their future. It is okay to have dreams, and fantastic to set goals to strive towards, but knowing how to get from here to there requires being able to fill in the blanks. Each student is different and life has a tendency to present obstacles and variables along the way. Having the ability to make good grades and pass a test or score high marks on TCAP or TN Ready testing helps educators to be able to gauge how well students are doing academically and enables the administration to make changes to increase the scores and place of their schools in a positive light. None of this can be accomplished without having good teachers in the classrooms. Good students make for good teachers and once that has been met then the natural by-product that is produced is learning. As a substitute teacher, I have gained a wealth of knowledge from experienced teachers and my students have taught me a lot about where they are and how they got there. They can be very candid in their opinions. Fortunately, for the most part, I have gained the respect of students and teachers alike as they can tell that I enjoy what I have been assigned to do. Students just want an adult to listen and pay attention to what they have to say and you would be amazed at the interesting conversations you can have. Perhaps parents need to experience this more in some cases and their child would do much better in school. Learning begins in the home and continues on throughout a student’s academic life. Sadly, COVID has had a devastating impact on a lot of single-parent and low-income homes and has carried forward into the classrooms across the country.

We Need More Social Media Literacy in School and at Home!

Reading is foundational to understanding the world around you. Kids need to go to school to be educated and not entertained. Until educators and parents unite to monitor the cause and effect, of extensive smartphone, tablet, and laptop use, then we will continue to leave our children vulnerable to predators with no faces and no names and no conscience to prey upon their perception of themselves and the world around them. Parents urge your child to leave their phones at home. Give teachers a break as they are overworked, underpaid, and stressed beyond reasonable limits. I attended an all-day symposium (Kids Count STATE OF THE CHILD 2021) at Union University sponsored by TN Commission on Children and Youth and facilitated by Mr. Matt Marshall of United Way West TN. He shared his vision for Jackson Madison County. It takes time to turn the corner but there are those willing to shoulder up to the task at hand! It breaks my heart about the senseless acts of gun violence that have taken place recently and perhaps that will be an article for another day. “How you look at things is dependent on what you see.” ~David Hays Don Polley | Education contributor (Contact don@donpolley.com) 06-09-22 CSENEWS P.9

“I told you y’all was going to let him die in there!” Mother says son’s death inside the Gibson County Correctional Complex might have been avoided with proper medical attention.

By Bill Marable On Tuesday morning, May 31st, Julia Barnes (left) was sitting in the driveway of her recently deceased mother’s home when a Gibson County Sheriff’s car showed up. “One of them was wearing all black and I immediately got out of my truck to see what they wanted,” said Barnes. “That’s when they asked me if this was where Ms. Kee, my mother, lived and I informed them that this was her home but she recently passed away.” Barnes went on to say that the officers expressed their condolences on the passing of her mother and inquired if she knew Keary Epperson. “I told them that he’s locked up in jail,” said Barnes. “That’s when he said ‘well, that’s why we’re here. We found him unresponsive in his cell this morning.’” Barnes said that’s when her worst fear came true. “I just said I told you y’all was going to let him die down there. Y’all wouldn’t get him the help he needed and now he’s dead.” In a statement released by the sheriff’s office, on Tuesday, May 31, correctional officers were conducting their routine rounds when they found an unresponsive inmate alone in his cell. Officers checked for vital signs and immediately began attempting life-saving measures as medics were called to the facility. The release states that paramedics arrived and determined the man was deceaseddead. Grieved and shaken, Barnes says she was told that she would receive a call from the jail and she would be able to come and identify her son’s body before it was to be sent off for an autopsy. “I waited for several hours and never got a call,” said Barnes. “So I decided to drive over to the jail and when I got there they told me that they had used their system to identify him and his body had been sent to Memphis.” Keary’s sister, Caladra Epperson stated; “he He was going to Carey Counseling before he arrived at the Gibson County Correctional Complex. He cried out for help to go to the hospital or to Bolivar during his sickness.” Barnes says her son had been locked up since Au-

Keary (Poosie) Epperson gust of 2019 and at that time he was a healthy man weighing close to 200 pounds. At the time of his death she thinks he barely weighed 100 pounds. “I first found out that Poonsie -as he was known in his hometown of Humboldt, TN. - was sick about four or five months ago when somebody called from inside the jail and said that I needed to get over there and check on him.” She says her son was reluctant to visit with her at first because he didn’t want her to see him in that condition. “He said it also made him sad to see me go,” said Barnes. At the time of his initial detainmentdetention, Keary (Poosie) Epperson was vibrant and most always in good spirits. What his mother discovered upon seeing her 48 year-old son, was a mere shell of the

man who walked into the jail in 2019. “He was so frail that he had to be pushed around in a chair. I couldn’t believe it,” said Barnes. Upon inquiry, she says jail officials told her that they had taken her son to the doctor on three separate occasions. Unsure as to the exact nature of his illness, Barnes says that the medication prescribed to her son was difficult for him to take. “He said taking the medicine made his chest hurt and he had difficulty swallowing.” Poosie’s step father, Greg Barnes of Trenton, says he’s looking for concrete answers as to why his son was allowed to die in jail. “We talked to the jail administrator and the chief deputy several times about Poosie’s health,” said Barnes. “Every time they said that they were doing all that they could.” Barnes said that his family was informed that Poosie was on a waiting list to visit a Nashville area hospital, but died before his name came up. Calandra says, “Keary was put on the waiting list and sat there and died while he was waiting. My brother shouldn’t have had to sit there that long to die. He’s a human being. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone.” “The irony of the situation,” says Barnes, “is that he was supposed to go to trial on May 31st and it was rumored that he would be released. He died that morning before court.” After speaking with his mother, she informed me that she was on her way to Baskerville Funeral Home to make arrangements for her son’s funeral and to try to get help receiving a copy of his autopsy report. Trust, but verify! Both parents agreed that whatever the results are from the State-ordered report, they are going to order a second autopsy from an independent source. “We just want answers. Why was our son allowed to lay in jail and die?”
