TREMAINUS MONTAGUE AND West Tennessee THE MIGHTY MISSISSIPPI OUTDOORS
Ol’ Man River, The Old Blue, The Big with Ray Jones Muddy, The Father of Many Waters and The Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com Great River are just a few of the names for or 731-694-8614 the Mississippi River. It is 2,300 miles watershed which is the greatest river in United States. The river runs from Minnesota through eight other states before flowing along Mississippi into the Gulf. West Tennessee borders the Eastern banks of Ol’ Man River which is home to many species of trophy fish. Although all species are naturally stocked in the river, catfish is one of the more popular kinds of fish. Humboldt native Tremainus Montague had himself a big time on the banks of St. Louis shores while fishing for catfish. He landed a huge catfish that was so big he had to weigh it for proof of trophy size. I’d say this fresh water monster will make some great steaks to go along with baked beans and slaw. Congratulations Mr. Montague on the fun you had in St. Louis. PHOTO IS TREMANIUS MONTAGUE WITH A TROPHY CATFISH.

And Your Point is . . .
“Old Timers Thoughts
by Robert Williams On July 18th, I will be 70 years old. I joined a Military Police Uit of the TN National Guard in 1971. I had my first job as a Police Officer in 1972. I spent 10.5 years with three Law Enforcement Agencies. Along the way, I earned two college degrees. I took a direction to work in Mental Health-Social Services for 38 years and kinda retired from that in May. Over those years I saw bad things and good things. Many things were beyond my control and I came to believe No Law will prevent a crime, but it will punish the guilty if they are caught. This paper is focused on crime and other topics. I often think my law enforcement experiences help my work as a Counselor. Reflecting back to the people I encountered and had to arrest, I believe many had Mental Illnesses and/or were illiterate. My counseling career often gave me rationalization to believe my notions on a connection of illness and crime. My friend Sheriff Mehr has described the new jail’s mental health unit and I was pleased we have that now. I wish we had not closed the many State Mental Institutions that each state had, but opted for less expensive outpatient services as a one size fits all. Most adults and children will commit minor crimes, for many do not possess clear thinking to solve a problem.
Let me make this very clear, 99.9 % of people with disorders are NOT Dangerous, no more than someone with Diabetes. Sadly the general public will use a disorder as a pronoun. Diseases are not proper names for humans. A Diabetic, an Autistic, etc. Properly, a Person with Autism, a person with Heart Disease etc.
I hope I have you thinking about our neighbors with illnesses in a good manner. I want to challenge everyone to think about our families in Madison County. If a child is age 7, but can not read or do basic math, do we believe it will be best to socially pass them to next grade, or engage the parents, teachers, and other professionals to seek a cause? Frankly, it is not a time to let Pride or Denial prevent getting the best help available. Our teachers need extra support staff when children are in their class with special needs. Teachers do not need rebuke, but funding clerical assistants is often needed. If we ignore that little child, when they reach 9th or 10th grade, their peers will tease them. Trurancy will often occur, then the legal system becomes a constant part of the child’s life. Often crimes occur and other bad influences become the support group for the forgotten child. I hope I stimulated each reader to give serious thought about a focus on a child early. This year, we have had 4 or 5 Murders, plus others have been wounded. Frankly, most years, Madison County has a low number of Murders. I know from my association with the Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, many rural counties will experience more Suicides than Murders. I personally believe there is a serious connection in the life timeline of a baby to someone my age, as to how the first five years of every baby. Early Childhood Development charts the course for most. Trauma, Neglect and Abuse will make life a difficult task. Part of preventing Crime might just start at Birth. Most of my Professors in Graduate School were Clinical Psychologists. One said something in a class that I have never forgotten. He said, “ Your Child will be what you are”. I believed his statement then and it is relevant today. I have rambled along due to my frustrations that our 2022 murders were mostly young teen to young adults. The alleged Killers were young. I am a parent and to see young lives ended, it makes my blood boil. A weapon was used, but I am sorry, that is not the real problem. The potential of a problem starts early. Parents and Teachers are the First Responders to our babies’ future. Those are my thoughts about our children and crime. Pray for our community, but then leave the church and take action. Robert Williams -- bobwtn7@gmail.com
Tennesseans for Quality Early Education issues statement in response to TDHS increasing child care reimbursement rates
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Following the Tennessee Department of Human Services’ announcement that it has increased child care reimbursement rates by 20 percent for providers participating in the Child Care Certificate Program, Tennesseans for Quality Early Education issues the following statement from President and CEO Blair Taylor. “We applaud the Tennessee Department of Human Services for increasing child care reimbursement rates so significantly.” “This is a huge step in the right direction and moves Tennessee’s child care payment assistance program closer to covering the actual costs of quality child care, while also making quality child care more accessible and affordable for eligible working families.” “There’s no denying that we are facing a child care crisis here in Tennessee and across the country. A child care survey conducted by Tennesseans for Quality Early Education found that 98 percent of Tennessee parents of children under 5 reported child care challenges had adversely impacted their workforce participation and productivity or limited career opportunities – with affordability, access and difficulty finding quality care being the biggest problems.” “While this reimbursement rate increase is a step in the right direction, there’s much more that needs to be done to fix the broken child care system and to ensure Tennessee’s working families can afford quality child care and early educators are compensated competitively. We look forward to the continued work of the state-appointed Child Care Task Force, on which I’m proud to serve, as it finalizes recommendations to improve Tennessee’s child care system and strengthen our workforce of today and workforce of tomorrow.”
It’s a Crime to Be Unhealthy! By Susan Holloway, M.S.
Home Economics Child Development-Family Relations Retired Teacher of JMCSS and Madison County Extension
Summer is the time for minor accidents in our homes. How many has your family had? Hopefully few but were you prepared to treat burns, bites, breaks, nosebleeds, cuts, stings, etc.? The best thing is to personalize your own FIRST AID KIT complete with instructions for all your family’s projected accidents. When I shop online for a ready prepared kit, I find they range from $20 to $200. Price usually is determined by 10-100 items. The following are guides to keeping yours simple: Choose a bag or box and add a large FIRST AID KIT label. Maybe some special decorations also. I purchased a clear plastic box with locking lid for only $1.25 at a local store which also has many other items you will need at that same low price. Choose about 10-15 index cards appropriately sized for bag or box. Also have markers and pens. Let each card contain the instructions needed to handle many problems your family notes could happen. Use internet to research instructions for happenings such as burns, bites, stings, cuts, breaks, nosebleeds, etc. List supplies needed to follow all these instructions such as gloves, roller and pad gauzes, medical tapes and bandages, disinfectant also for burns, trauma shears, elastic bandages, SAM and finger splints. Locate items you need on the list. Some may be in your home now and you can begin to place them in the box or bag. The items you need to purchase may be noted on the list as a good shopping reminder for you. At a family meeting, teach each person as cards have instructed, where kit is located, discuss last accidents persons had experienced and what they needed at the time. Maybe sort the cards into those accidents “likely and unlikely” to happen and then rank cards in each category. This would be a great time to have a fire drill for the home and or course a tornado drill. Designate persons to bring FIRST AID KIT to the drills. I am totally dependent on insulin to live, and I always bring insulin and supplies to my safe place during drills. May your days be safe and healthy because you plan ahead for the unexpected. 07-14-22 CSENEWS P.9
CDF Freedom School Helps Students Avoid Summer Learning Loss
By CSENews Staff Eartha Grimes says retention of things learned over the past school year is one of the biggest setbacks to kids being away from school for the summer months. That is why the Children’s Defense Fund Liberty Bell Freedom School, sponsored by Mother Liberty CME Church in Jackson, is a vital tool for summer learning. The school operates from June 13 - July 22 from 8 am until 3 pm and provides STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment for 20-30 youth per day. It is located at 456 S. Highland Avenue, with breakfast and lunch served daily. “Our main goal,” says Grimes, “is to use literacy activities to kind of slow down or to stop the summer slump that children get between one school year and the next.” According to Grimes, “the ability to read, comprehend and retain information is a bridge out of poverty and a passport for lifelong success.” Information provided in a brochure credits CDF Freedom Schools with assisting more than 12,000 children in avoiding summer learning loss. Eighty percent of CDF Freedom School scholars tested in 2019 maintained or gained in instructional reading levels and did not experience summer learning loss. The CDF Freedom School serves youth from Kindergarten through Fifth grade. Each morning the youth participate in Harambee - a motivational activity, followed by a Read A-Loud where community volunteers come and read to the group. “There’s an Integrated Reading Curriculum where they are read a story and then participate in activities and discussions about the story, says Grimes. “This helps with their reading comprehension as well as their reading ability.” Drop Everything And Read (DEAR TIME) is another component of the Freedom School, says Grimes. “For 15 minutes everyday, we drop everything and read. It’s supposed to enforce read-
ing for children and give them a sense that reading is important because everybody’s doing it.” Grimes and fellow educator Angela Nelson Parks says the youth attending the Freedom School also participate in weekly field trips, and all services and activities are provided for the youth free of charge. “Our prime sponsor is Lane College which provided the SLI or teachers for the Freedom School,” said Grimes.
Parks is especially proud of the ReadA-Loud portion of the curriculum. “The kids enjoy having volunteers come by and read to them. Ms.Tina Mercer was our Guest Reader Monday morning! She engaged our scholars and got them all excited about literacy! Great job my friend!”

BULLETS HAVE NO NAME Fri, 08/14/2020 - 14:42 -- Tiarra3
Bullets have no name All you have to do is be in frame Be in the vicinity and you may get hit But some legislators don’t give a damn What will it take to put measures in order I thought they were supportive of law and order Law and Order doesn’t apply to all Just as long as you grew up in the right country club People who live lavishly think they are protected Bullets have no name You or your loved one might be in frame That is when you’ll consider legislation People are shot by wannabe snipers It is time to provide education and jobs It is time to stop these street snipers They hold down the streets Because that’s the only thing they can do to eat While legislators ignore the bullets that roam When bullets hit kids When bullets hit women and men When bullets hit people... legislators do not care But let it be the family’s cherished cat or dog Oh no they will cry It’s is time for gun control One victim to a stray bullet should be enough As bullets have no name And anyone or anything can be within frame https://powerpoetry.org/poems/bullets-have-no-name
“The First Child Martyr at Illinois Elementary” By Liz Rosenberg
Children are so very graceful none were killed at Illinois Elementary when that poor bedeviled woman emptied her gun on the square-dance floor —except one boy who stumbled pushing his friend from the line of fire. His body should not have been in that place at that time. He could not have been more than eight or nine, so what did he think about his life to be so willing to desert it, leaping away as if to climb ropes in the gym? He was only a child, falling like a player on the hardwood floor. And what on earth did he know

EARLY VOTING FOR THE AUG. 4 ELECTION STARTS FRIDAY
Early voting allows Tennesseans to avoid Election Day crowds and shorten their wait time.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee’s generous early voting period for the Aug. 4 State and Federal Primary & State and County General Election begins this Friday, July 15, and runs Monday to Saturday until Saturday, July 30. “More Tennessee voters take advantage of the convenience and flexibility of our state’s generous early voting period every year,” said Secretary of State Tre Hargett. “There is a longer ballot for the Aug. 4 election, so I encourage Tennessee voters to cast their ballot early.” On the August ballot, Tennessee voters will see primary races for Governor, U.S. House, State Senate, State House and the State Executive Committee members for each political party and retention or general elections for judicial offices and other state and local positions. Early voting allows Tennesseans to avoid Election Day crowds and shorten their wait time. Early voting also offers the flexibility of evening and Saturday hours and multiple polling locations in many counties. Tennesseans can find early voting and Election Day polling locations, view sample ballots and more with the GoVoteTN app or online at GoVoteTN.gov. The GoVoteTN app is free in the App Store or Google Play. Voters are encouraged to review their sample ballot on the GoVoteTN app or GoVoteTN.gov before they head to the polls. Reviewing your ballot and deciding how you will vote will also reduce your time at the polls.

CEREMONIAL GROUNDBREAKING, CELEBRATION Tell Them You Read It In HELD FOR NEW POPE SCHOOL

The CrimeSEEN
JACKSON, Tenn. – Jackson-Madison County School System leaders were joined by local dignitaries and members of the business community on Monday to participate in a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new Pope School. The rural lot near the corner of Ashport Road and Pleasant Plains will be transformed into a new Prek-8 campus over the next 18 months. “In the fifteen years I’ve been in this office, this is one of the absolute top highlights. This has been a high-growth area of our community. It’s sorely needed, and we finally have come to the day we break ground,” said Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris. Representatives with Henson Construction, the construction manager hired to build the new Pope School, were in attendance along with Orcutt-Winslow, the architecture firm selected to handle the project’s design. “HCS appreciates the opportunity to work with JMCSS as their construction manager on this long-awaited new Pope School. We look forward to providing professional construction manager services to help build a quality facility on time and within budget,” said Henson Construction President Carey Henson. The new Pope School will support more than 800 students in grades Prek-8. The current Pope School, which has experienced overcrowding since the 1990s, is the only public school in the rapidly developing northwest corner of Madison County. “Today’s construction world presents challenges with timely material procurement and sufficient labor availability. HCS will do its best to overcome these hurdles. We are anxious to get site work started this fall,” Henson said. Several pre-construction activities are expected to take place over the next several weeks before additional site preparation and foundation construction begin. “This is a celebration of a shared trust between school leaders and county officials. This also serves as an acknowledgement of the exciting future that lays ahead for our community schools across our city and county,” Superintendent Dr. Marlon King said. 07-14-22 CSENEWS P.13
