MAN CHARGED WITH KILLING TEENAGER DURING ARGUMENT IN NORTH MEMPHIS by: WREG Staff

Michael Robinson

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man was arrested after allegedly shooting a teenager dead with a shotgun in North Memphis. ‘What am I going to tell my baby?’ Man with child on the way shot, killed in North Memphis over $10 Michael Robinson, 31, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and being a convicted felon in possession of a gun. Police said the suspect was the “significant other” of the victim’s mother. On July 12, officers were called to the 800 block of Randle Street and found Zaqune Harris in the driveway, shot once in the chest. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Harris’ mother told authorities her son was involved in an argument with Robinson. As that argument escalated, Robinson went to his vehicle, grabbed a shotgun and shot the 18-year-old in the chest. Authorities did not say what the argument was about, but Denisha Anderson, the mother of Harris’ unborn child, told WREG he was shot over $10. The child is due in February.

COLLABORATIVE EFFORT LEADS TO ARREST IN NORTH JACKSON

July 8, 2021 Tristyn Fletcher - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson police have arrested a suspect with the help of both the public and other law enforcement agencies. Jackson police say Blake Carroll, 35, (r) was arrested around 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Executive Inn on North Highland Avenue. Police say he had an outstanding warrant out of Madison County Circuit Court for failure to appear on felony drug and weapon offenses. The release from the department says agents searched the room and found over 40 grams of methamphetamine, over 8 grams of heroin/fentanyl, 10 grams of marijuana, and a loaded handgun. Jackson police say this investigation is ongoing, and they ask anyone with information to call the department at (731) 425-8400. The release says investigators with the Madison County Metro Narcotics Unit, the Jackson Police Department’s Patrol Unit, Street Crimes Unit, and Gang Enforcement Team made the arrest.

PET CARE AND SUMMER HEAT

West Tennessee This has been an extremely hot summer and August has not even arOUTDOORS rived. It is important to know that pets feel the heat and are affected by it with Ray Jones just as we are. Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com Outdoor pets do not have the pleasure of coming inside to get a little or 731-694-8614 air conditioning to cool off. They can not tell you they are hot and have needs that are different during mild weather. Daily fresh water is an absolute must and even if their water bowl is full from the day before it needs to be refreshed. We don’t like water that was in our glass for a day and they prefer fresh water also. Insects, mosquitoes and ticks are always a greater threat in summer than any other time of the year. Puppies require additional attention from what the mother dog can provide also. If the temperature is too high they may need some sort of fan so their body temperature doesn’t get too high. They are not able to stand the extreme heat that a mature animal can handle. Keep a good EYE on you outdoor pets so they can enjoy the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

Officers and investigators of the Jackson Police Department are investigating a shooting that occurred at the Old Hickory Mall located at 2021 N. Highland Ave. July 12th at approximately 3:55 PM, officers and investigators of the Jackson Police Department responded to the mall in reference to a subject that had been shot. Responding officers located a victim who sustained what appeared to be a non-life-threatening injury. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. McKellar-Sipes Airport welcomes new airline

Officials, citizens, customers gathered at the Jackson Madison County Airport recently to Celt the ceremonial ribbon cutting and welcoming the airports new airline service, Boutique Air. Tom Warren, Vice President of business development with Boutique Air said “this is day one of the Boutique Air service for McKellar Sipes Airport for Jackson. Boutique Air was welcomed with Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris and Jackson Mayor Scott Conger, along with Jackson Chamber members, and numerous airport staff. Warren said “we fly the safest aircraft in existence and we’ve done over 150,000 plus customer flights without incidents in any form.” We are thankful to be here and we appreciate the opportunity to serve this community in a fast and efficient manner and to operate in an economical basis. “ The change from Air Choice One, the airports airline for six years to Boutique Air began back in December 2020 when the Jackson-Madison County Airport Authority requested a change in carrier. The contract was awarded to Boutique Air in February after the airline offered a key benefit to local travelers, namely more flights to Atlanta. Mayor Harris said “there are two trips a day to Atlanta, if you can go to Atlanta, you can fly anywhere in the world” Steve Smith. Executive Director of McKellar-Sipes, said the airport sees a much heavier flow of traffic to Atlanta than to St Louis and expects to see an heavier flow as the pandemic restrictions are lifted. Mayor Conger also expressed his excitement for the new airline. “We’re glad to have Boutique Air here and look forward to our relationship with you.”

And Your Point is . . . The Awful One Percent

In 1916 John D. Rockefeller was the richest man in the world. The first billionaire, at age 40 he controlled 90% of the world oil refineries and a third of the oil wells. No one at that time even came close to matching his wealth. In 2021 many of you make $40,000 per year and would trade places with John Rockefeller in a New York minute. Do you think the John Rockefeller of 1916 would trade places with you? I’ll bet he would. Even living life as the richest man in the world he would probably trade that in order to have the life you have. In 1916 only 4% of the roads were paved. Air conditioning, modern plumbing, modern medicine, electricity, phones, televisions and so much more either did not exist are were still new ideas. The life expectancy was 49.6 years for women and 54.3 years for men. Our life even lived as a “poor” person compared to his life, to him would seem full of miracles and wonders. There is no reason to want to be him at that time except just to have the status of being considered “rich” by others. Also remember that he was one of the awful one percent, perhaps the most “one percent” of them all. We are called upon by many not to be a nationalist or isolationist or protectionist or any of the other evil “ists” that are out there. After all “We Are The World”, right? If you are old enough you might remember that song, but if not you can still get the point. Do you realize that if you make $30,000 or more that you are part of the one percent in personal resources on a global scale. How much are you willing to pay to help eliminate that inequity? Would 70% in taxes be O.K.? How about 80% or even 90%? Are you not a good person? Don’t you care?

Resources always have and always will distribute themselves unevenly. There is a term for it. It’s called the Pareto Effect and we see it in everything. In short, success breeds success, and failure breeds failure. To those that have more, more will come their way. To those that have less, more will be taken away. A tiny fraction of people produce the most and as they produce more it becomes easier for them to get more. Redistributing wealth does not equalize the playing field. Getting people moving in an upward spiral rather than a downward spiral does (eventually). It’s easy to see the Pareto Effect in some examples we see and notice every day. In our entertainment, our athletics, our politics, thousands participate but there is always that relatively tiny group that produce the most and as they do more and more seems to come their way. We see that in all aspects of human life but also in all the non-human forms. Rivers get deeper, cities get bigger and inertia propels growth. Getting inertia to work for you and not against you is mostly up to you. If you (we) can start by just doing one thing successfully and then follow by trying to do one more thing and then another, things seem to open up. Opportunities appear that were not there before. Life can be tough for us “one percenters” but how would you like to be the richest man in the world and not have air-conditioning? P.S. - It’s very hot today.

Clarity Give Signs Meaning Say and then do. These were the words of Dr. Marlon King when he first entered the academic arena in Jackson Madison County Schools. It is almost hard to

believe what he and his team have accomplished over the past school year. The school board’s motto of “best by any measure,” seems to be exactly what this superintendent has delivered to the school board, the community, and the school system. I was fortunate enough to have been a part of the “winning team” at Liberty Tech High School as a permanent substitute teacher this spring semester. I have observed the changes at JMCSS over the past several years and I must confess there is a calm among the school board members. Not that long ago a school board meeting could last up to two hours and was almost painful to attend in person. Now a school board meeting lasts about 20 minutes as it seems they can actually accomplish work and come to agreement in the work sessions. The chairman of the longrange planning committee understands the meaning of long -range, and it does not mean the next school board meeting. There are signs everywhere as to how this relationship is beneficial to all stakeholders in the community. Dr. King is very adept at adding clarity to existing opportunities for workforce development and workforce development. Even during a pandemic, he and his team have cleared the way for two new high schools to open this fall. Remodeling Malesus, to be a home for Jackson Academic STEAM Academy (Cyber School), as well as a hub for teacher learning. Not to mention before all this opens up JMCSS is the regional leader as JCMECH leads West TN high schools offering AA, AS, and AAS degrees.

Leadership Matters

Dr. Ricky Catlett with his background and experience along with Vivian Williams with their years of experience with JMCSS as Deputy Superintendents were excellent picks by Dr. King, as they had earned the trust and respect of the community and school system. Appointing Mr. Greg Hammond was a brilliant move as communications director as he is a well-known in the community and extremely talented and capable to perform his duties. Mr. James “Pete” Johnson has brought stability to a once disgruntled school board as chairman. The school board seems to be supporting Dr. Kings emphasis on academics, athletics, and the arts for the upcoming school year. It is my hope that the signs are clear that the board needs to take steps to keep Dr. Marlon King for many years to come. Students learn best when they feel a sense of belonging. I hope they recognize the value of what is taking place at JMCSS. The best is yet to come! Just look at the picture and recognize that I have no words to express my appreciation for Dr. Marlon King. I hope it works both ways as I look forward to being a part of the winning team again this fall. “Don’t let the fear of the future or the pain from the past stop you from rowing towards the future.” ~Jon Gordon (from “Row the Boat” w/PJ Fleck) Don Polley | Education contributor (Contact don@donpolley.com) 07-15 -21 CSENEWS P.9

Poetic Expressions

Hanging Fire BY AUDRE LORDE

I am fourteen and my skin has betrayed me the boy I cannot live without still sucks his thumb in secret how come my knees are always so ashy what if I die before morning and momma’s in the bedroom with the door closed. I have to learn how to dance in time for the next party my room is too small for me suppose I die before graduation they will sing sad melodies but finally tell the truth about me There is nothing I want to do and too much that has to be done and momma’s in the bedroom with the door closed. Nobody even stops to think about my side of it I should have been on Math Team my marks were better than his why do I have to be the one wearing braces I have nothing to wear tomorrow will I live long enough to grow up and momma’s in the bedroom with the door closed. Audre Lorde, “Hanging Fire” from The Collected Poems of Audre Lorde. Copyright © 1997 by Audre Lorde. Reprinted with the permission of www.nortonpoets.com.

Audre Lorde

1934–1992 Image of Audre Lorde. - Robert Alexander/Getty Images A self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” Audre Lorde dedicated both her life and her creative talent to confronting and addressing injustices of racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. Lorde was born in New York City to West Indian immigrant parents. She attended Catholic schools before graduating from Hunter High School and published her first poem in Seventeen magazine while still a student there. Of her poetic beginnings Lorde commented in Black Women Writers: “I used to speak in poetry. I would read poems, and I would memorize them. People would say, well what do you think, Audre. What happened to you yesterday? And I would recite a poem and somewhere in that poem would be a line or a feeling I would be sharing. In other words, I literally communicated through poetry. And when I couldn’t find the poems to express the things I was feeling, that’s what started me writing poetry, and that was when I was twelve or thirteen.” Lorde’s early collections of poetry include The First Cities (1968), Cables to Rage (1970), and From a Land Where Other People Live (1972), which was nominated for a National Book Award. Later works, including New York Head Shop and Museum (1974), Coal (1976), and The Black Unicorn (1978), included powerful poems of protest. “I have a duty,” Lorde once stated, “to speak the truth as I see it and to share not just my triumphs, not just the things that felt good, but the pain, the intense, often unmitigating pain.” Lorde’s later poems were often assembled from personal journals. Explaining the genesis of “Power,” a poem about the police shooting of a ten-year-old black child, Lorde discussed her feelings when she learned that the officer involved had been acquitted: “A kind of fury rose up in me; the sky turned red. I felt so sick. I felt as if I would drive this car into a wall, into the next person I saw. So I pulled over. I took out my journal just to air some of my fury, to get it out of my fingertips. Those expressed feelings are that poem.” Her poetry, and “indeed all of her writing,” according to contributor Joan Martin in Black Women Writers (1950-1980): A Critical Evaluation, “rings with passion, sincerity, perception, and depth of feeling.” Lorde’s 1982 novel, Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, was described by its publishers as a “biomythography, combining elements of history, biography and myth.” Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (1984) collected Lorde’s nonfiction prose and has become a canonical text in Black studies, women’s studies, and queer theory. Another collection of essays, A Burst of Light (1988), won the National Book Award. The Collected Poems of Audre Lorde was published in 1997. In 1981 Lorde and fellow writers Cherríe Moraga and Barbara Smith founded Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, which was dedicated to furthering the writings of black feminists. Lorde would also become increasingly concerned over the plight of black women in South Africa under apartheid, creating Sisterhood in Support of Sisters in South Africa and remaining an active voice on behalf of these women throughout the remainder of her life. Lorde addressed her concerns to not only the United States but the world, encouraging a celebration of the differences that society instead used as tools of isolation. As Allison Kimmich noted in Feminist Writers, “Throughout all of Audre Lorde’s writing, both nonfiction and fiction, a single theme surfaces repeatedly. The black lesbian feminist poet activist reminds her readers that they ignore differences among people at their peril … Instead, Lorde suggests, differences in race or class must serve as a ‘reason for celebration and growth.’” Lorde’s honors and awards included a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. A professor of English at John Jay College and Hunter College, Lorde was poet laureate of New York from 1991-1992. Warrior Poet (2006), by Alexis De Veaux, is the first full-length biography of Audre Lorde. 07-15 -21 CSENEWS P.16
