with Ray Jones storm. Send photos to: Kayaking has become one of the most exciting water sports nationwide numberonecoach@hotmail.com and we have our share of participants. It is a safe fun way to enjoy the or 731-694-8614 outdoors while exercising at the same time. Kayaking provides a peaceful way of enjoying the water adventure on almost any body of water. Some people do it simply for relaxation while others like to fish from kayaks. It allows fishermen to easily get into places that boats might have difficulties. There are many lakes in West Tennessee that are perfectly fine for this sport where the threat of danger is very low. Calm bodies of water are best for beginners but most people do wear a life jacket anyway. If the kayak flips over it will not sink and it is easy to flip it back over and get back on your journey. If you are ready for a new adventure try kayaking in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee.

With daily travel being an important part of our daily lives please be mindful of safety and practice basic safety tips which could save your life. Watch your speed, buckle up, hands free and take regular hourly breaks on long or extended travel. In Tennessee, fatality rates are up 26% for 2021 and accident crashes in west Tennessee especially on I-40 are becoming a daily occurrence. The Tennessee Highway Patrol, along with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office had a extremely busy week with crashes this week. Namely the horrific crash near Norton Hill on 45 South Highland south of Jackson where a mother and children were involved with two bob trucks causing an explosion. This crash resulted in traffic being re-routed for several hours. The Downtown Ricky Brown Traffic Spotters Network membership has grown to over 9,600 volunteer members. Their key primarily purpose is to report traffic conditions, crashes, road closures and hazardous traffic in the area. “We welcome your suggestions, ideas and participation in becoming one of our Traffic Spotters. Welcome you to click “join” on the DTRB Downtown Ricky Brown Traffic Spotters Network Facebook page! Let’s work together to reduce traffic accidents in Tennessee” said founder Downtown Ricky Brown.

This Fall Lets Focus on Acceleration
I had much more to say in my last article as Dr. Marlon King and his team have accomplished a great deal over the past year. I attended the Jackson Chamber Breakfast, and we were treated not only to Mike Keith (the voice of the Titans) but also to a positive report as to the outlook for the Hub-City moving forward. It appears that The Great Wolf Lodge is back on the table which will bring 250 permanent jobs and several other jobs to Jackson. They have broke ground for I-69 in Obion County and West Tennessee is moving towards being a destination and not simply a place between Memphis and Nashville. There was also a report that the state has allocated funds to run sewage lines to the Megasite location which will bring hundreds of jobs to the area. To accommodate this growth the school system is stepping up its efforts to provide Workforce Development so that students at JMCSS will be equipped to take advantage of the options and opportunity available to them.
I am looking forward to attending the Equity, Business, & Economic Development Conference sponsored by PDG Tools for Crossing the Finish Line. There will be a Mayoral Lunch Panel on Economic Development with Mayor McTizic, Mayor Conger, and Mayor Rawls. I would not be surprised to see much more positive developments from throughout the region.
An Opportunity Missed Is an Opportunity Lost
If you follow my column you have read about my emphasis on a growth mindset. I do not believe in luck; luck is the convergence of preparation with opportunity. Students now is the time to create your own “luck.” Be prepared for what is taking place right in your own backyard! The school board and the superintendent are now team JMCSS. It does not get much better than that for your future. Get your face out of your smartphone or tablet and get present with your teachers who are trying to equip you for future success. I am not your typical substitute teacher, but will be a part of the winning team again this fall at Liberty Tech. I am a big picture kind of guy and I believe that there is room at the table for all those that are willing to put forth the effort necessary to succeed. Use technology as a tool or a resource for development and not a distraction. Leave your excuses at home. Boring people want to be entertained; successful people want to learn how to earn! “Winning introduces you to yourself for the first time. It forces you to be honest about who you really are, what you really want, and what you are willing to do to get it.” ~Tim Grover (From his book W1NNING, The unforgiving race to greatness.)

Poetic Expressions REWARD OFFERED FOR INFORMATION WE WEAR THE MASK We wear the mask that grins and lies, It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,— This debt we pay to human guile; With torn and bleeding hearts we smile, And mouth with myriad subtleties. Why should the world be over-wise, In counting all our tears and sighs? Nay, let them only see us, while We wear the mask. We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries To thee from tortured souls arise. We sing, but oh the clay is vile Beneath our feet, and long the mile; But let the world dream otherwise, We wear the mask! Poet: Paul Laurence Dunbar Published: 1895
Paul Laurence Dunbar is perhaps the most famous black poet from the 19th century. This poem is focused on the mask that, according to the author, black people are forced to wear during their interactions with other people of the world. The mask that he refers to is that of smiles. The poet stresses that, despite being troubled, African Americans suppress their emotions rather than expressing their inner troubles or protesting openly. The poet then goes on to describe in more detail the agony that is concealed by the “smile” of the mask. When they smile, black people like him are praying to Christ with “tortured souls”. They sing, but the path they walk is “vile” and “long”. We Wear the Mask is the most famous work of Paul Laurence Dunbar and one of the best known American poems of the 19th century.
ON I-55 SHOOTING SUSPECT
By Janice Broach - wmcactionnews5.com Published: Jul. 16, 2021 MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Shocking video shows a man on the I-55 bridge hanging out of a car shooting at the driver of a transport truck. The incident happened July 2. It was something other truckers saw. They say they are lucky to be alive. The video shows a man with a gun hanging out of the driver’s side window of a car shooting at a truck driver. It was on the Arkansas side of the bridge at Bridgeport Road. “He said that he was very afraid because all of a sudden, shooting at him. He didn’t know why. He says he kind of scared,” the truck driver’s boss, Ourelio Paredes with Arcadia Auto Transport. The driver of the F-350 truck with a car hauler from New Jersey attached does not speak English. Paredes said the truck was hit several times but not the driver. “He’s very lucky,” said Paredes. He says the driver had no idea why he was targeted. The camera on the truck recorded the video. Another truck driver on the bridge when it happened recorded video of the suspect car. The suspect car is a dark Chevy Malibu. Video shows the car speed by on the shoulder then stop. Then you see the man hanging out of the Malibu that takes off again heading into Memphis. That truck driver said it was too close for comfort. Truck drivers say it is bad enough that there is only one bridge crossing the Mississippi River, and now with this incident, they have to be extra vigilant. “You’ve got to have eyes on all sides all the time, because they can be coming by you and shoot up at you,” said Paredes. Mike Brower has a warning for anyone who thinks they won’t be seen. “They’re going to be seen because I’m going to reach down and push that button and record as fast as I can,” he said. The shooter was wearing a watch and was smoking something. He is driving a black four-door Chevy Malibu with Tennessee plates. The video is pretty clear. If you know who the shooter is, call law enforcement or Crime Stoppers in Crittenden County or Memphis.
NASHVILLE WOMAN ARRESTED AFTER SMACKING BOYFRIEND, WHO CALLED HER A “FAT B-TCH”
07/19/2021 Jason Steen - scoopnashville.com 44-year-old Jennifer McBrayer was jailed this week after calling the police… on herself. On the way back from picking her boyfriend up from a halfway house, he asked to stop at a gas station. When he wanted money for alcohol, she refused and they drove off. Once on the interstate, he called her things he shouldn’t have, and she backhanded him, not once, but twice. Police responded to mile marker 75.6 on I-65 North on July 15th, in response to an active domestic violence call. Once at the scene, they met with the caller, Jennifer McBrayer, who says she called the police after she was taking her boyfriend to her house from his current halfway house, and they had been arguing since leaving the gas station where she refused to allow him to buy alcohol. Jennifer D. McBrayer (MNPD) While she continued their ride home on the interstate, she says her boyfriend, Thomas Ray Beard II, called her a “fat bitch”, at which time she slapped him twice in the face, then pulled over and called police to put him out. Since she admitted to assaulting him, police took her into custody, instead of him, and charged her with domestic assault.
