A FISHER OF MAN

West Tennessee When we think of Angels the first thought is an invisible flying spirit OUTDOORS with wings. However, Angels are all around us and often go unnoticed by with Ray Jones the general population. Send photos to: One such Angel is Larry Jarrett who spends his days doing all he can to numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 help others. Mr. Jarrett was told by doctors seven years ago that he had a situation most people would not be able to handle and not to be optimistic about the future. He has since then spent his time helping others any way possible and spends no time worrying about his personal difficulties. When friends mention that they want certain things he gets it for them without them expecting it by spending his own time and money to bless them. Paying him back is not an option because he says “you will not stop my blessing by paying me”. Although he spends time being treated for personal issues he never complains about his condition while making sure those around him have what they need and want. Fishing for fish is his hobby but being a fisher of men is his calling. If you don’t believe Angels are walking around the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee you just haven’t met Larry Jarrett. An investigation by the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has led to the indictment of Kacey Criswell, the former PTO president and treasurer at Spring Hill School—part of the Gibson County Special School District. Investigators determined that Criswell misappropriated at least $17,586.08 from the PTO between July 2015 and November 2019. The investigation began after school officials reported missing PTO funds. Much of the money was stolen when Criswell failed to deposit money that was received from fundraisers and basketball concessions. Criswell also wrote checks payable to cash to be used as change funds for concessions and fundraisers; however, she did not deposit some of the change funds back into the bank account. In order to conceal her activities, Criswell changed the PTO’s bank account address to her personal mailing address so that she would receive bank statements. She also altered PTO financial reports to indicate the PTO’s money was being deposited. Criswell did pay back $14,144.01 to the PTO; however, she still owes the PTO $3,442.07. The PTO was formally dissolved in August 2020.

The investigator found Allen said a black female dispatcher should not be married to a white man, followed female employees to their homes to threaten them if they complained about him and told female employees they needed a “spanking.” But in the report, independent attorney Florence Johnson indicated the city didn’t let her complete her work on Lt. JACKSON UNDERDAWGS FEEL THE THRILL OF VICTORY, TASTE THE AGONY OF DEFEAT IN MILLION DOLLAR THE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

July 2, 2021- By Bill Marable - csenewsnow.com The Jackson Underdawgs took to the court versus the House of Paign (PAI) in their first game of The Basketball Tournament in Peoria, Illinois, with a million dollar prize it stake. It’s definitely was a PAI crowd at the Peoria Civic Center Arena. The Underdawgs got off to a slow start, with normally sure-shot players like Marquis Weddle and Allen Durham combining for 3/11 as they struggled out of the gate. At the first time out PAI lead Jackson 12 to 9 with 3:57 left in the first quarter. Terrandus Smith entered the game on the break and helped pace the Underdawgs to a 21-17 lead after one quarter of play. Jackson quickly extended that lead to7 points behind the aggressive defense head coach Dexter Williams has been famously orchestrating since his days at Liberty Tech High School in Jackson. The Underdawgs recorded 10 points off turnovers in the first half. “I felt like we stayed poised especially with them (House of Paign) having virtually a home crowd, said Williams in the post game interview. “Even though our guys were off offensively, we are never off on defense,” added Williams. At the first media timeout of the second quarter, Jackson lead 31-24 behind a balanced shooting attack with Smith and Josh Sain leading 9 players Underdawgs in the scoring column. With the million dollars on the line things got a little heated at the 2:33 mark of the second quarter as several players engaged in a brief shoving match sparked by the on court bantering of the Underdawgs’ Tarius Johnson and Demetri McCamey of PAI. Josh Sain was ejected for leaving the bench and McCamey and Matt Smith were given technical fouls. The encounter fueled a 5-1 run by PAI. “Hey man, these guys are playing for huge stakes,” said Coach Williams. “It’s inevitable that at some point tempers are going to flair. Everyone maintained a level of professionalism and we were able to continue play.” Johnson, plagued by poor shooting (1/4) was presented with a count off from the PAI fans every time he approached the Charity Stripe, a move reminiscent to the fans of the Phoenix Suns as they tormented Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Underdawgs literally took it in the mouth from PAI as Anthony Sampson swallowed an elbow with a few seconds left in the half, but we’re able to hold on to a 35-29 lead at the break. Coach Williams was able to extract the most out of his team, with all 13 players seeing time on the court. Jackson shot 42.9 percent from the floor while holding PAI to 28.6 percent shooting. PAI cut the lead to 1 with 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd and took the lead back at the 3:21 mark. They brought the partisan crowd to it collective feet when Matt Daum connected on a bucket and propelled the PAI to a 44/41 lead with 2:25 left in the 3rd. Rayvontev Rice lead all players with 18 points (scoring 10 in the 3rd). The Underdawgs found themselves trailing 49/44 after 3 quarters of play. “At halftime, I told my guys that they (PAI) were pros and we could expect them to go on a shooting spree. But we have to maintain our composure and weather the storm,” said Coach Williams. Johnson tipped in a bucket at the 6:20 point giving Jackson a one point advantage of 52/51. Following a quick foul, coach Williams summoned his troops to the sideline for a brief strategy session. Both teams traded baskets and PAI found themselves trailing 56/54 with 3:46 left to play when the announcement came that the first team to reach 64 wins. With the game clock no longer a factor, both teams intensified play heading down the final stretch. Jackson holding fast to a 58/55 lead. Things can turn on a dime in situations like these and when Weddle missed a 3 pointer PAI tied the game on the next shot before Jackson behind a Weddle basket, reclaimed the lead. On the next possession Weddle added an And 1 giving Jackson the go head points He later sealed the deal from the free throw line - after a hard foul -giving Jackson a 64-58 win. “It feel’s great,” said Williams when asked about the Underdawgs first win of the tournament. “That first one is always the big one.”

Always A Brave 70, Jackson, TN Underdawgs 50

Darrell Brown, Jr. scored a game-high 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting, and Always A Brave outscored the Jackson TN Underdawgs, 21-6, in the fourth quarter to defeat the upstart Jackson TN Underdawgs, 70-50 Monday night. Brown also pulled down six rebounds in the win for Always A Brave, which won in front of its home fans. Marquis Weddle led the way with 11 points for the Underdawgs, who shot just 22% from three-point land.

July 21, 2021 Diamond Williams - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — There are a few things you need to know about changes regarding trash pickup in Jackson. Talking Trash Live was held on Wednesday to clarify what Jackson residents need to do with their new rolling trash cans. This is part of the changes the city agreed to in its new contract with Waste Management. “We’re transitioning to a curbside solid waste pickup, and providing residents with 95-gallon rolling carts to collect waste. You may have seen some of those. They’re starting to pop up across the city as they’re delivering those on their routes. So you either have one or you’ll be getting one soon,” said Alex Reed, Assistant to the Mayor. There are a few changes residents will have to get used to. “One rolling cart will be provided for the deposit of residential waste at each residential unit. Carts must be placed in front of the those and on the curb,” said Leilani Mills, Director of Health and Sanitation. The new trash carts must be placed on the street by 7 a.m. on your pickup days. There is an exception for those unable to bring their cart to the curb. “If you’re are unable to bring your cart to the curb, you can contact the Health and Sanitation Department for a disability waiver, and they will send that to you and you can fill that out,” said Dawn Cole, Public Sector Representative for Waste Management. The days of the week your trash is picked up remain the same. Bulk waste pickup will continue to operate on predetermined routes that will be on a rotation, with only the city responsible for the pick up. No overfilled trash carts will be picked up. “If you get all of your trash inside this container, and any of your cardboard boxes and the lid is like this, it will not be serviced. If you have debris hanging all out of the side of the container, it will not be serviced,” said Kimberley Harville, District Manager for Waste Management. Plus there are requirements for how far away your carts must be placed from objects. “It must be 3-feet from mailboxes, cars and telephone polls,” Harville said. Harville says there a few items that cannot go into these trash bins that will result in you getting tagged.

And Your Point is . . .

OP-ED: The Movement for Justice Will Not Be Deterred

NNPA NEWSWIRE — The so-called “conservative” justices on the Supreme Court are rewriting the laws passed by Congress to serve their own partisan purposes. Now the excuse is to limit voter fraud, even though there is no evidence of such fraud other than in the ravings of partisan politicians. This struggle will continue. Published July 26, 2021- By Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr.The Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr., one of America’s foremost civil rights, religious and political figures.

OUR VOICES

By Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. The right-wing majority on the Supreme Court just undercut the Voting Rights Act again. Having gutted the section that required pre-approval of state voting laws to protect the rights of minorities to vote in Shelby v. Holder, Republican-appointed justices now have castrated the backup clause — Section 2 — which bans racial discrimination in election practices in Brnovich v. DNC. The result will open the floodgates even further to the wave of partisan laws that Republicans are pushing in states across the country to suppress the votes of African Americans and other people of color. The right-wing justices continue their assault on the meaning and power of the Voting Rights Act, a triumph of the civil rights movement that Justice Elena Kagan, writing in dissent, noted represents the “best in America.” The reaction against the civil rights movement continues. Every movement for equal justice under the law in this country has been met with a brutal reaction. When reformers tried to limit the spread of slavery into new states coming into the republic, the slave states seceded, launching the Civil War, the deadliest war in American history. After losing the war, when the federal government began reconstruction to free the slaves and guarantee equal political and economic rights to all, the reaction was brutal, with lynching and terrorism — led by the Ku Klux Klan and others — spreading to suppress the newly freed slaves. In the end, segregation — America’s version of apartheid — spread through the South and the hope of the civil rights amendments was crushed. Now, after the civil rights movement, the Voting Rights Act and the election of Barack Obama, the reaction has been fierce. Across the country, Republican legislators have sought to make it harder for African Americans and other people of color to vote. The long lines that mark inner-city voting sites are a graphic demonstration of the success of those efforts, for many people can’t take the hours off from work to cast a ballot. In each era, the lawless reaction — and blatant violations of the Constitution — have been ratified by disgraceful decisions in the Supreme Court. The court ratified segregation in Plessy v. Ferguson, inventing the doctrine of separate but equal — a concept that existed only in the judge’s imaginations, not in the realities of any of the former slave states. Voter suppression following the civil rights movement was ratified in Shelby v. Holder and now in Brnovich vs. the DNC, that have essentially gutted the Voting Rights Act, the crown jewel of the civil rights movement. The so-called “conservative” justices on the Supreme Court are rewriting the laws passed by Congress to serve their own partisan purposes. Now the excuse is to limit voter fraud, even though there is no evidence of such fraud other than in the ravings of partisan politicians. This struggle will continue. Clearly, Republicans across the country have decided that rather than seeking to win the votes of African Americans and other peoples of color, they would rather pass measures to suppress their vote — from discriminatory changes in voting practices, to gerrymandering of districts, to (most dangerously) empowering Republican legislatures to overturn the results of an election. Once more people of conscience must stand up and organize to protect the right to vote and to counter those who would suppress it. Once more, right-wing justices have written another shameful chapter of judicial ignominy that must simply be overturned. Once more Congress must act to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to counter the brazen efforts of the court’s right wing to neuter it. Once more, those standing in the way of equality under the law will find that the movement for justice will not be deterred. Rev. Jesse L. July 25, 2021- By Jerry Woods <woods1986@eplus.net> wrote: City Councilman Johnny Dodd has a strong track record for providing positive activities for local young people. Dodd continued that record last weekend by hosting the 17th Annual Bounce Back Basketball Camp. The campers gathered at T.R. White Sportsplex to hone their skills in Passing, Ball Handling,Defense, Rebounding and Shooting. Trainers for the event included Lane College Mens Coach, Andre Turner, JCM boys Basketball coach Don Rudesill, among others. Campers like Dacarion Hammond, a Lincoln School student, made these remarks concerning the camp,” I liked learning about dribbling, shooting, rebounding”. “ I had fun” he said. JCM-ECH student, Tyler Minor commented “ I learned more of how to use my skills and get in touch with myself” Minor concluded “It was beneficial and help me to learn life lessons.” Mattie Robertson who had four of her grandchildren in the camp commented that the camp was “Beneficial One Hundred Percent”. In addition to skills practice, campers were treated to snacks, lunch, door-prizes and motivational speeches from City Court Clerk Darryll Hubbard and JCM Football coach John Gore.

the photographs, the desperate notes, peel your own image from the mirror. Sit. Feast on your life. Derek Walcott had a long and distinguished career as a poet during which, among other things, he won the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature. His most acclaimed poem is the Homeric epic Omeros but his most famous poem is perhaps Love After Love. The poem is unusual for a love poem as it stresses on loving the self. Particularly, it is about the importance of loving the inner self after break down of a relationship. It’s main theme is that of becoming whole again through self-recognition. Consisting of four stanzas, Love After Love is written in the form of advice that is presented to someone suffering from distress that comes from a bad relationship. The speaker believes that this person has become someone else and, only when he fully embraces his true self, he will be able to become fully content.
