SUMMER CRAPPIE FISHING

West Tennessee Crappie fishing season is generally in OUTDOORS spring and fall but I have proof that crappie with Ray Jones season is going on right now. Send photos to: I have seen many facebook post with large numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 numbers of crappie being caught during this very hot summer we are having. Although the average person uses minnows for crappie most have reported using jigs and having the most success. Keeping minnows alive this time of the year is a challenge but if you can fish love live bait. Some crappie fisherman like to tip the jig with a minnow and entice them a little bit more. Either way crappie season is year around now and you do not need to wait until fall because the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee has crappie lurking right now waiting to be caught by you. NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Hidden-camera video obtained by NewsChannel 5 Investigates reveals a recent closed-door reception with Tennessee’s governor and a key education ally who repeatedly mocks the intelligence of public school teachers and questions whether they really care about what is best for their students. That ally, Dr. Larry Arnn, president of Michigan’s ultra-conservative Hillsdale College, also takes aim at diversity efforts in higher education, claiming people in those positions have education degrees because they are “easy” and “you don’t have to know anything.” Throughout the nearly two-hour video, Gov. Bill Lee offers only praise for Arnn, who Lee has invited to set up charter schools across Tennessee. The Republican governor never takes issue with the Hillsdale president’s remarks, nor does he defend the state’s 80,000 public school teachers or the state’s teacher training programs. “The teachers are trained in the dumbest parts of the dumbest colleges in the country.” “They are taught that they are going to go and do something to those kids.... Do they ever talk about anything except what they are going to do to these kids?” “In colleges, what you hire now is administrators…. Now, because they are appointing all these diversity officers, what are their degrees in? Education. It’s easy. You don’t have to know anything.” “The philosophic understanding at the heart of modern education is enslavement…. They’re messing with people’s children, and they feel entitled to do anything to them.” “You will see how education destroys generations of people. It’s devastating. It’s like the plague.” “Here’s a key thing that we’re going to try to do. We are going to try to demonstrate that you don’t have to be an expert to educate a child because basically anybody can do it.” Asked for comment on Arnn’s words, Lee’s communications director chose instead to focus on the words in a television commercial for this report about “the future of education.” “Under Gov. Lee, the future of public education looks like well-paid teachers and growing a workforce to support our students and build the profession,” Laine Arnold said in an email. Given a second opportunity to condemn Arnn’s ridicule of public education and public school teachers, Lee’s spokesperson stood by her statement. https://www.newschannel5.com/news/newschannel-5-investigates/revealed/revealed-teachers

#SupportTNTeachers

I have so many mixed emotions regarding the disparaging remarks made last week about Tennessee’s teachers. I was more disappointed that our state’s leader did little to defend us, but I wasn’t surprised. We all know how some people truly feel about public education because they eventually show us. I’ve been thinking of how to respond in a way that would demonstrate my disdain for the comments, my belief in my colleagues across the state, and the quality of education that I’ve received in the great state of Tennessee-since education departments are the dumbest on a college campus. This situation is a clear reminder that elections have consequences. We need all stakeholders to support our efforts to fully fund public schools, not work to dismantle them. Teachers, students, schools, and communities need your support, not ridicule. Many of us devote our lives to educating generations of future Tennesseeians. I urge those of you who support teachers, to do so using whatever platforms you have available to you. If you can engage a council member in educational discourse, do so. If you can type a respectful email to a representative, go right ahead. If you have room on your timeliness or feeds, post this picture. Feel free to even share this post. It takes a well-educated, well-supported, well-funded, and highly encouraged village to educate our state’s children. Because #TheyAreAllMine and #TheyDeserveAFuture #ISTILLTeach

On last Thursday, Skinner - who is in her first year on the council- joined volunteers and members at St. James Missionary Baptist Church located at 278 Preston Street in District 4 of east Jackson to gave away over 200 free fans and other items to residents in their free fan giveaway. “I was there to support the people who do what they can do to make our community better,” said Skinner. Last Friday, Councilwoman Skinner participated in the Mother Liberty CME Church CDF Freedom School and their Read Aloud Program. Coordinator, Angela Nelson Parks, (r) said “Tara picked one of my favorite books too (Reily’s Recital)! All is is well with my soul! Thanks Tara for the treats for our scholars!”

Midsummer, Tobago by Derek Walcott

Broad sun-stoned beaches. White heat. A green river. A bridge, scorched yellow palms from the summer-sleeping house drowsing through August. Days I have held, days I have lost, days that outgrow, like daughters, my harbouring arms. Sir Derek Alton Walcott KCSL OBE OCC was a Saint Lucian poet and playwright. He received the 1992 Nobel Prize in Literature. This poem features in A Poem for Every Night of the Year, edited by Allie Esiri. https://www.panmacmillan.com/.

Hunting Season Once again, we find another young brother dead. The final bullet in the top of the head. A mother and father are left to cry, wondering why their child had to die. The officer said, “the boy struck me in the face.” It seems young Mike forgot his place, and race. The D.A. said, “It was all justified,” dozens of witness must have lied. The officer said he feels no strife and if given a chance he’ll take another life. Many people are worried and feeling sad, wishing that justice could be had. Now I’m not a hunter but one thing is clear, it don’t take twelve shots to bring down a bear. - By Dewight (11-27-14

LOCAL ROE VERSES WADE PROTEST AT MADISON COUNTY COURTHOUSE By Downtown Ricky Brown

Members of the West Tennessee LGBTQ+ Support Group organized a protest in response to the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe verses Wade. The Court’s decision means abortion is no longer legal and is now up to each individual state. Organizers including President Megan McKee, “say they want to implement some sort of change and bring local attention to the issue.” She said as soon as the decision was announced they wanted to take action. “This affects people of every community and that’s one reason why we wants to highlight it specifically. We’ve got trans men and women, non-binary individuals that face extreme discrimination in our community and we are wanting to alleviate some of those issues,” said Kal Reasons, member of the group protesting. The protest lasted several hours on the courthouse lawn with members holding up signs of protest for motorist to see, members said most were supportive but they did encounter some that did not approve their efforts. SABRINA BLUE KICKS OFF TYLER GUY FUND

Sabrina Blue introduced the Tyler Guy Fund -a fund through the West Tennessee Healthcare Foundation - to community leaders and volunteers Tuesday morning at the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce. Named in honor of her son who was recently murdered in Jackson, the mission of the Tyler Guy Fund is: “To support our network of nonprofits through education, advocacy and funding.” According to Blue, the Tyler Guy Fund is designed to enhance existing non-profit organization that address the issues of gang violence, guns, education and services involving youth in Jackson. “We have all these different programs like Keep My Hood Good, SWAG and The Hub Club here we just need to find a different way of supporting them without taking away for the support that they already have,” said Blue. The Tyler Guy Fund will serve as an intermediary to find out what these organization are missing and to try to help them become stronger and more of a community asset by offering more opportunities for youth to succeed. The aim of Tuesday’s meeting, in addition to introducing the Fund and it’s objectives, was to select officers and committee members to assist in the effort. For more information Contact Sabrina Blue: sblue@helpinghandstn.com; phone (615)589-6012. Or https://www.wthfoundation.org/giving (They will need to scroll down until they see the name Tyler Guy Fund).

Cont’d from page 8 “It is important that the public views us as good fiscal stewarts,” said Dr. King. “By concentrating on the things that are most important to the daily operations, we were able to set aside a rainy day fund that is equal to one month of bills.” Never before has the JMCSS had a budget surplus. “This allows us to make budget adjustments on the fly without having to go back to the funding source (the Madison County Commission) requesting additional dollars,” added Dr. King. “When the price of diesel fuel, food and other expenses excaleted, we were able to weather those storms by having the rainy day savings.” From having one of the top Vocational Training Programs in the state at South Side High to the award winning student body at Madison Academic High, Dr. King says it is his goal to shed more light on the outstanding things happening within Jackson Madison County Schools. “It’s about trust and building long term relationships with each of us that we may be servant leaders, teachers and servants to our students and each other.”
