A Plea for Seniors to Remain Focused
So much has happened since we have been impacted by the pandemic. A new superintendent has taken the reigns at JMCSS and has appointed a top-notch leadership team to address past, present, and future issues facing the school system. In my humble opinion, they have surpassed even the most optimistic expectations for JMCSS.
At the school board meeting, the service and impact of outgoing school board members was recognized and acknowledged. Ms. Doris Black assured the board that she would be available to help on the transition and would continue to support the school board and the students at JMCSS. A.J. Massey, will be assuming a new role to serve the community and the school system as the county mayor-elect. He indicated that the board would continue to have a friend in the county commission. I would like to acknowledge outgoing mayor Jimmy Harris for his efforts to support all that has been achieved at JMCSS. Make no mistake, Dr. King would not have been able to accomplish so much in such a short span of time without the dedication and support of the school board. There is a new attitude throughout the school system as everyone likes a winner. Parents are getting more involved and becoming supportive and the students, for the first time since 2019, have a sense of continuity and normalcy to look forward to for the upcoming school year. There are still ongoing issues that need attention, such as the shortage of bus drivers this fall. Administra tors, teachers, and support staff have the needs of the students in mind as this school year has the potential to be the best one in a decade.
I attended the Bicentennial Celebration at the Ballpark and had two students from Gibson County ask me if I was going to be subbing in their schools this year. I am truly humbled to have such an impact on students. I think the Commodores may have gained another genera tion of fans as I had seventies flashbacks and fondly remembered the Motown sound. LOLO always promotes her community and a good time was had by all in attendance. Seniors, Jackson needs to be a go to place for future events like this, Great Wolf Lodge, and innumera ble new and exciting opportunities that can be ushered in by those with the right attitude and a growth mindset. It is time to lose the victim mindset of the issues presented by the pandemic and move forward with purpose and direction. Here are some numbers compiled by Strada Education Network. The proportion of 14–18-year-olds who think education is necessary beyond high school is: 48 percent. The proportion who thought so before the pandemic: 60 percent. The proportion of adults who have a “great deal” or “quite a lot” of confidence in higher education: 48 percent. Here is the most scathing opinion of all: the proportion of adults who think more education will help advance their career or get a stable job: 39 percent. Here is an eye-opener from the Bureau of Labor Statistics; workforce participation for 16–24-year-olds is actually lower than it was before COVID-19. Seniors be the beginning of the change in these trends that provide a capable workforce for the hub-city and show that the educational opportunities offered here are the best beyond all measure! “Every new day brings new opportunities. Decide in advance to look for the good, to seize the moment, to feed the positive, to weed the negative, and to be your best while bringing out the best in others.”

“There are so many risks associated with impaired driving,” said Sgt. JMCSS BUS DRIVER COMMENTS
• Macaroni and Cheese (individual packets/ bowls) • Ravioli (with pop-tops) Through Snack Backpack, RIFA is able to serve 13 different schools by providing 1,300 backpacks each week throughout the school year. Each snack backpack provides children with six meals and two snacks.“This event lets us invest in our kids as an entire community to support the Snack Backpack program,” says Lisa Tillman, RIFA Executive Director. “Childhood hunger is a real problem and we want to do everything we can to combat it. This is a great opportunity for individuals, families, churches, and businesses to come together to support an effort that is truly making an impact, all while doing your weekly shopping.”Unfortunately, many school children are home with little or no food over the weekends. To fight this, RIFA’s Snack Backpack program, with the help of teachers and school counselors, is able to help meet this need by providing kid- friendly, easy-to-prepare, nutritious meals to students who are at risk of going hungry over the weekends. Childhood hunger is an issue not just around the world but in our community. Studies show that children who live in food-insecure environments are more likely to face social, developmental, and psycho logical problems. About RIFA RIFA is a Christian non-profit organization that reaches out with the love of Christ to help people in need by providing physical and spiritual nourishment. In 1976, local churches and community leaders came together to discuss the growing poverty levels in Jackson, Tennessee. The problem: each individual church and civic organization did not have the resources to effectively provide relief for those in need. To coordinate a united effort, they formed a separate agency to help: The Regional Inter-faith Association (RIFA). For more information, visit www.rifajackson.org
I hope this is ok in this group. I’m Patti, the driver of bus 333 that runs SS\ Bemis\South Elementary. I’ve created a FB page specifically to keep MY kids’ parents posted on MY route. Offerings of Desire by Kelly Norman Ellis ISBN products/offerings-of-desireTo$13.95Willow978-0-9852877-1-9Booksorder:http://aquariuspress.myshopify.com/collections/poetry/
“Every stanza in this fierce and formidable collection strikes a sweet, keening note for the colored girl—the front-row-center Sunday morning worshipper, the fast gal craving the jukebox on Saturday night, the grandmama arced over a stove-top staple, the precocious nappy-headed chile tripping the double-dutch line. With Offerings of Desire, Kelly Norman Ellis has graced us all with a gift that is nothing short of a miracle. She has blessed the sisterhood with a soundtrack.”
Praise for Offerings of Desire: “In Kelly Norman Ellis’ long awaited second collection, a grand cinema of black life is hon ey-beamed and bal anced on a ‘nipple of coal.’ Somewhere in the middle of turning these pages, the reader will helplessly rise and mercilessly hunt for dirty rice and Bill Withers. It is indeed the poet’s job to save something, but Ellis does more— she swears to paper a luscious book so rich with black zest and drylongso that each page sets high our thirst for all that is human, longed for and inexplicable.”
~Patricia Smith, author of Shoulda Been Jimi Savannah (Cof fee House, 2012) and Blood Dazzler, 2008 National Book Award Finalist “Kelly Norman Ellis declares “I am a woman of omens,” and you can’t look away. Like the perfectly chartered bloodlines of her debut, Tougaloo Blues, Ellis speaks to our bodies and souls once again with Offerings of Desire: a daily soundtrack of work/love/life songs that happily blurs the lines. I would be less than honest if I didn’t say I am a student of her words, that I learn what it means to sculpt sight, sound and memory in Ellis’ rich appeals to the senses. These poems are a seat at a table of plenty, each course more pleasing than the last. When she rais es an invocation ‘for Robeson and Einstein,/ the hustler on the El/and the banger on my corner,’ believe. This poet can conjure such a varied and magical world.”

People of all ages return to their roots to celebrate, fellowship and show the love for their community. Douglas community has long been one of the richest traditions for Blacks in West Tennessee. Most Blacks still own their farm land and is being farmed by Black farmers for the most part.
Douglas School was the place that all of the Stanton area children attended school and those teachers were their role models which influ enced many of them to become doc tors, lawyers, high ranking military personnel and other highly esteemed leadership positions.
Mr. Aubrey Bond, who was raised in Denmark, attends yearly and understand the impact because of his rich home tradition also. He is retired from a career in which he was Superintendent of Fayette County Schools and most recently an educator with Memphis City Schools.Heiscurrently owner of A-AA Bail Bond company. Having recently lost his daughter, being around friends and events like this helps keep his motivation up to help others. He is a member of Volunteer Corvette Club of West Tennessee where he displays his 2021 Stingray Hard Top Convertible Corvette which is a crowd favorite with its’ beautiful Bronze color. West Tennessee Outdoors has much to offer to those who are not sportsmen such as this event and the Carver/Dunbar Homecoming this Weekend.

By Susan Holloway, M.S. Home Economics Child Develop ment-Family Relations Retired Teacher of JMCSS and Madison County Extension I recently attended the funeral of a 34-year coach and teacher in West Tennessee. He was almost 80 years old with many physical limitations but mentally and socially very active. He spent time with former stu dents by calling or visiting them at a local café. He had his life-long friends prepared to speak at his funeral. He was such a loving person who lived for others more than himself. Two men had no trouble speaking for 1½ hours about him. Wow! I thought. What will be said about me? Immediately I recalled a short but powerful poem. See how this affects the healthy way you choose to live your life.

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone from the beginning…to the end. He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the follow ing date with tears But he said what mattered most of all was the dash between those Foryears.that date represents all the time that she spent alive on earth And now only those who loved her know what that little line is worth. For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash. What matters is how we live and love and how we spend our dash. So think about this long and hard; are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left that can still be rearranged. If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s true and real And always try to understand the way other people feel. And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more And love the people in our lives like we’ve never loved before. If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile… Remembering that this special dash might only last a little while. So when your eulogy is being read with your life’s actions to rehash, Would you be proud of the things they say about how you spent your dash?
