DOUGLAS HOMECOMING

West Tennessee The Douglas community was back to what it is good at after a year off OUTDOORS because of Covid concerns last year. with Ray Jones The annual event brings people back from all over the country for fun Send photos to: and fellowship that can’t be matched. numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 Jeffery Richmond heads up this event and he is to be commended for the efforts along with his staff. The museum is a main attraction because of the icons represented for their years of service and mentoring during the 60’s and 70’s in the Stanton/ Douglas community. Mr. Theodore Giles, Mrs. Martha Ann Jones, Mrs. Mamie Dell Dotson, Mr. Charles Wills are enshrined in the museum along with others that had influence on the lives of school children and their parents. It was this type of naturing that produced such great leaders as Dr. Dorothy Grandberry, Dr. Wayne Bowles and Dr. Jessie Cannon who all have been pioneers in their perspective professions. The homecoming events consist of a car and motorcycle show along with food vendors that have you scratching you head to figure which one to try. The thing I like the most is the peace and love that radiates throughout the atmosphere. The Douglas community is the main place in Haywood County that still has predominately Black owned farms. Hats off to the Douglas/ Stanton community for showing West Tennessee how to have fun in the Good Ole Outdoors.

ARREST REPORTS Jackson, Humboldt, & Milan Pages 4-5

JURY SUMMONS SCAM ALERT

Madison County Sheriff John Mehr, is alerting citizens of a fresh barrage of scam calls concerning Jury summons. This time, the caller threatens, that because you missed a Jury duty assignment, you will need to pay or you will be arrested and jailed. The Sheriff reminds everyone, it is best just to hang up. Do not send any money or gift cards and certainly do not share any personal information such as bank account and social security numbers. Just be alert, and protect yourself from these criminals, who are out to steal your money and joy.

MADISON COUNTY INCREASES IMPAIRED-DRIVING ENFORCEMENT

Madison County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) for its “Booze It and Lose It” campaign from August 18 to September 6, surrounding the Labor Day holiday. This initiative coincides with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” mobilization to increase impaired-driving enforcement nationwide. Sergeant Richard King stated, “Throughout this holiday season the Madison County Sheriff’s Office will be conducting DUI saturation patrols throughout Madison County. We would like to wish everyone a happy & safe holiday season. Please remember to have a designated driver if you are drinking and please buckle up.” Increased state and national messaging about the dangers of drunk driving, coupled with increased sobriety checkpoints and high visibility enforcement, aim to drastically reduce the number of drunk-driving crashes, injuries, and fatalities this year. The THSO provides grant funding to support Madison County Sheriff’s Office increased enforcement efforts during the Booze It and Lose It campaign. For more information about the THSO, please visit www.tntrafficsafety.org.

Lee’s order comes as the virus is spreading through Tennessee faster than at any time during the pandemic, except for this winter’s surge, while a staffing shortage makes it harder for hospitals to provide care. The Tennessee Department of Health reported a seven-day rolling average of 3,913 daily cases on Aug. 12, and deaths are at roughly 20 per day. On Monday, according to the health department, the test positivity rate was 17.5%; the World Health Organization recommends restrictions to slow the spread of the virus when the positivity rate is above 5%. WNWS Radio 101.5 Conducts “Madison County “Sheriff’s Election” Poll

The election for the next Madison County Sheriff is a year away, however interest in the election is already gearing up on local radio news outlets. Local radio station WNWS 101.5 FM News Talk conducted a sampling poll Friday asking this question.

If the election for Madison County Sheriff were today, whom would you vote for: Current Sheriff John Mehr or Jackson Police Chief Julian Wiser?

The poll was conducted with the suggestion of Grace media news director David Thomas and hosted by afternoon host Seabass. While unscientific, the poll yielded some interesting results of an estimated 328 callers or texts sent in. While unofficial, the poll results were:

John Mehr - 6

Julian Wiser - 320

While there may be other unannounced candidates for Madison County Sheriff coming forward, this poll was limited to Mehr and Wiser and indicates an early opinion poll. Your thoughts, opinions are always welcome at the “BROWN BEAT at rickeylynnbrown@hotmail.com.

And Your Point is . . .

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 244 in Madison County. The health department has received positive test results for 513 more cases of COVID-19 since Aug. 13, 2021. We now have 13,479 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Madison County. Epidemiology staff are reaching out to these individuals and people who had close contact with these cases.

TENNESSEE STUDENTS CAN OPT OUT OF WEARING MASKS AT SCHOOL, governor says.

The Shelby County superintendent disagrees. By Ian Round and Caroline Bauman Aug 16, 2021 Marta W. Aldrich / Chalkbeat

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee issued an executive order Monday allowing parents of schoolchildren to opt out of school mask mandates. Lee said he will not call for a special legislative session, which General Assembly leaders had called for in an effort to prevent mask mandates and other safety measures in schools. “Local decision-making is very important,” Lee said at a news conference in Nashville. But parents’ ability to make decisions for their kids “is the most important. No one cares more about the health and well-being of a child than that child’s parent.” The state’s largest school district, Shelby County Schools in Memphis, will for now continue to require masks for all school employees, students, and visitors, Superintendent Joris Ray tweeted Monday evening. Ray said he and board members are consulting with the district’s general counsel to review Lee’s order. Lee’s move comes as the delta variant drives a resurgence of COVID cases and political fights are raging nationwide over what schools should do to keep safe as they try to find their footing after a year and a half of pandemic disruptions. Shelby County Schools, which resumed classes last week, announced in early August it would require masks in schools, and at least 13 other school districts followed suit. Six small school systems in the Memphis suburbs also issued mandates in compliance with an order from Shelby County health officials to require face coverings inside of all school buildings. Lee’s executive order covers both school districts and local health agencies. In a statement Monday, the Shelby County Health Department said it would comply with Lee’s order and “make adjustments as necessary.” The department said it continues to support recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics that children age 2 and older, teachers, and staff members at schools, preschools and day cares wear masks in indoor settings, particularly in regions with high transmission of the virus like Tennessee. It wasn’t immediately clear what the county shifting its stance will mean for Shelby County Schools. Ray referred to the county health order in saying the district’s mask mandate would continue. Rep. Vincent Dixie, a Nashville Democrat, said going maskless to a school where COVID-19 is spreading freely “is like going into a lion’s den with no armor.” “The governor gave no solutions on how to protect our kids,” Dixie said, noting kids under 12 are ineligible for any of the vaccines. “You can’t just say what you don’t want and don’t give some sort of solution.”

THIS IS WHAT SOME PARENTS HAVE TO SAY. . . “They are super spreaders. This is why the virus is spreading so rapidly, because of decisions such as this. He is not pro-life. He doesn’t care about the welfare or wellbeing of the next child and or next family. If a parent doesn’t want their child to wear a mask they should home school their child or children. It is so appalling to see parents willingly place their child and other children at risk to a virus that is not containable and that is deadly. That alone would want me to protect my child. It’s sad that those people care more about their freedom and rights than they do about life and staying a live and healthy. This is sickening, a sin and a shame.” Kimberly J. ‘I feel if the a school district opts to wear masks then that decision should be the final decision. Wear the mask or stay home.” Cathy G. ‘If this ain’t the dumbest… mine gone wear it and better not take it off this is serious!” Nickey M. “So can schools turn the children away if parents refuse that would be awesome....don’t want to mask em’ then you can teach em” Felisha W. “He don’t care about the children. INITIATIVE SEEKS TO REDUCE TARGETED SHOOTINGS AND KILLINGS IN JACKSON

By CSE News Staff A new initiative aimed at de-escalating the rise in shootings in Jackson was unveiled to the public on Sunday’s edition of Community Feedback, hosted by radio talk show veteran Richard Donnell. Donnell and Jackson native Telleous Currie teamed together to introduced listeners to Cease the Beef, an initiative that they created that is aimed at reducing the number of targeted shootings and killings in Jackson by working, through mediation efforts, to prevent shootings on the front end before the shots are fired. Cease the Beef is modeled after Violence Interrupters, Inc. (VI), a data-driven, violence reduction, research-based initiative headquartered in Chicago. According to VI’s Executive Director, Tio Hardiman, the VI model seeks to “anticipate and interrupt the transmission of high-risk events and change the social norms and behaviors that perpetuate violence.” The components include street outreach and conflict mediation to those persons who are at the highest risk of being shot and killed and those persons who are the shooters. When asked how the name Cease the Beef originated, Donnell -pictured left- said that it came to him quite quickly when he read newspaper accounts of recent targeted shootings in Jackson and heard rumors that the shootings may have originated over trivial matters.

“I wondered out loud why these young men were trying to kill each other. I wondered, what is the beef? Then I said that whatever it is, it should cease. Thus, Cease the Beef.”

Currie -pictured right- became involved in the campaign when asked by Donnell to join him. From previous conversations, Donnell was impressed by Currie’s articulate manner and his commitment to curtailing, and hopefully preventing, violence among young men in Jackson. “I am glad to be a part of this project. My heart breaks each time I hear of another brother gone due to senseless violence. As a strong black man, I feel it is my duty to do whatever I can to reach as many young brothers as I can to try to halt this endless circle of targeted violence. I’ll be working in the trenches. We will not be able to reach all of the young brothers who are going down the path of self-destruction. If we can reach just one, then all of our efforts will have not been in vain. I am committed and I hope that others will join us.” Cease the Beef has established a 24-hour telephone hotline that members of the community may call to leave information about possible and pending targeted and violent disputes among our young people. The number is 731.265.1716. Callers may or may not leave their callback information according to their wish. Active recruiting for volunteers to join the Cease the Beef campaign is underway. Those who wish to join this endeavor are urged to call the hotline and leave your contact information.

Poetic Expressions Ballad of Birmingham

c s e n e w s n o w. c o m LADIES WINE DOWN AT D180 FITNESS

BY DUDLEY RANDALL

(On the bombing of a church in Birmingham, Alabama, 1963)

The Lifting Preacher, Nick Graves says “If you wasn’t here, you wouldn’t know the time these ladies had.” Exercise with the best at D180 Fitness downtown Jackson, every Tuesday evening with WineDown Butt and Abs workout.

“Mother dear, may I go downtown Instead of out to play, And march the streets of Birmingham In a Freedom March today?” “No, baby, no, you may not go, For the dogs are fierce and wild, And clubs and hoses, guns and jails Aren’t good for a little child.” “But, mother, I won’t be alone. Other children will go with me, And march the streets of Birmingham To make our country free.”

“No, baby, no, you may not go, For I fear those guns will fire. But you may go to church instead And sing in the children’s choir.”

LANE COLLEGE ANNOUNCES 2021 HALL OF FAME CLASS

She has combed and brushed her night-dark hair, And bathed rose petal sweet, And drawn white gloves on her small brown hands, And white shoes on her feet. The mother smiled to know her child Was in the sacred place, But that smile was the last smile To come upon her face. For when she heard the explosion, Her eyes grew wet and wild. She raced through the streets of Birmingham Calling for her child. She clawed through bits of glass and brick, Then lifted out a shoe. “O, here’s the shoe my baby wore, But, baby, where are you?” Dudley Randall, “Ballad of Birmingham” from Cities Burning. (Photo by Leni Sinclair/ Getty Images) The influence of Dudley Randall, founder of Broadside Press and Detroit’s first poet laureate, “has been one of the strongest—some say the strongest—in the black poetry movement of the last 15 years,” argued Suzanne Dolezal in Detroit magazine. “As publisher of Detroit’s Broadside Press between 1965 and 1977, Randall provided a forum for just about every major black poet to come along during those years. And dozens of anthologies include his own rapid, emotional lyrics about Detroit’s bag ladies, lonely old drunks, strapping foundry workers and young women with glistening, corn-rowed hair,” she continued. “Beyond Randall’s contributions as a poet, his roles as editor and publisher have proven invaluable to the Afro-American community,” R. Baxter Miller wrote in the Dictionary of Literary Biography.

THREE ARRESTED, CHARGED IN WHITEVILLE HOMICIDE AUGUST 13, 2021 - WHITEVILLE – A joint investigation by special agents with

the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office, and the Whiteville Police Department has resulted in the arrest of three individuals on murder charges. On Monday, at the request of 25th District Attorney General Mark Davidson, TBI agents joined the Hardeman County Sheriff’s Office and Whiteville Police Department in investigating a homicide in the 300 block of Mt. Tabor Road in Whiteville where a female was found fatally shot. The deceased individual was identified as Tatianna Delk (DOB: 1/21/95 - RIGHT). During the course of the investigation, agents and investigators developed information that identified Shantell Essie (DOB: 9/2/92) of Whiteville, Jeremy Patterson (DOB: 1/9/84) of Saulsbury, and Johnnie Tate (DOB: 9/5/87) of Whiteville as the individuals responsible for the murder. Today, with the assistance of the United States Marshal Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force, Essie, Patterson, and Tate were taken into custody on one charge each of First Degree Murder. All three were booked into the Hardeman County Jail on $350,000 bond.

ARREST MADE IN HAYWOOD COUNTY COLD CASE AUGUST 10, 2021 - BROWNSVILLE – More than two decades of work by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment and arrest of a Haywood County man on a murder charge and other counts in connection with a 1997 homicide. On December 25, 1997, Glenn Musgraves (DOB: 4/15/64) was shot and killed as he walked along Thomas Street in Brownsville. At that time, 28th District Attorney General Clayburn Peeples requested agents join the Brownsville Police Department on the case. During the course of the ongoing investigation, agents and investigators determined Robert “Boo” Perkins (DOB: 4/10/77) was a person responsible for the shooting. Though Perkins died in 1999 before he could be charged, the investigation progressed and agents determined there was a second person, Lamont Walker (DOB: 11/2/77 -RIGHT), involved in the homicide. In July, TBI special agents met with current 28th District Attorney General Frederick Agee and shared the results of the 23-year-long investigation. On Monday, a Haywood County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Walker with First Degree Murder, Facilitation of First Degree Murder, and Accessory After the Fact. Today, Walker was arrested in Haywood County by members of the United States Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force and booked into the Madison County Jail on $250,000 bond.
