Tennessee Governor:
Get vaccinated but masks not necessary in schools
Only one Tennessee district, Shelby County Schools in Memphis, has mandated masks for all students and staff this year.

Gov. Bill Lee is urging Tennesseans to get vaccinated as cases of COVID-19 surge, but doesn’t think schools should follow new recommendations from U.S. pediatricians for all students and staff to wear masks.

TENNESSEE WON’T PUBLICIZE COVID-19 CASES BY INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL
by Kaylin JorgeTuesday, July 28th 2020 - https://fox17.com NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — Tennessee health officials said Tuesday they won’t be publishing COVID-19 cases by individual schools. “The department will not be publishing that list, but I fully expect schools will often times be able to tell parents and it will be their responsibility,” Dr. Lisa Piercey, Tennessee health Commissioner, said. When the pandemic first broke out, Tennessee did not publicize COVID-19 cases at nursing homes and long term facilities, but changed course after getting the go-ahead from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, officials said. “Until CMS gave us clearance to do that, we didn’t feel comfortable putting that out because of the risk of re-identification,” Dr. Piercey said. Dr. Piercey pointed to an example in which schools have already notified parents of COVID-19 cases: Alcoa City Schools in East Tennessee have already opened and had its first case of COVID-19. Parents were notified through an email and those in contact with the case were notified, the schools said.

ARREST REPORTS Jackson, Humboldt, & Milan Pages 4-5
ATTEMPTED FIRST DEGREE MURDER SUSPECT FROM SHELBY COUNTY CAPTURED BY U.S. MARSHALS
Memphis, Tennessee – U.S. Marshal Tyreece Miller announces the capture of Jonathan Funches in Florida for Criminal Attempt First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault, Domestic Assault, and drug charges out of Shelby County. On May 8, 2021, it is alleged that Funches violently assaulted a woman at her home because of a domestic dispute and then fled the scene. Funches found the woman later that day and fired multiple shots into her vehicle striking the woman and her child. The woman and child were transported to LeBonheur Hospital and were listed as non-critical. On July 28, 2021, Florida Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force (FCRFTF) members developed information that Funches was staying with family members in Florida. The U.S. Marshals Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force (TRVFTF) in Memphis, Tennessee requested assistance from the FCRFTF to apprehend Funches. Both task forces collaborated to apprehend Funches in Lynn Haven, Florida. On July 29, 2021, the FCRFTF located a vehicle that Funches fled in. After further investigation, a search warrant was obtained for an address within an apartment complex. The task force knocked and announced their presence at the apartment door for several minutes, and eventually Funches surrendered. He was arrested without incident. “The Marshals Service priority is to keep the most dangerous fugitives out of our communities and apprehend them in the safest manner possible” said Marshal Tyreece Miller.

Cont’d from page 1 crime scene and two victims. Both gunshot victims appeared to have non-life threatening injuries and were transported by Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital for treatment. Jackson Police have not determined if the two cases are related but continue to actively investigate both. While Jackson Police and Investigators have actively inves tigated the two cases from the evening of August 1st, Jackson Police and Investigators were dispatched to another shooting incident. Monday morning, August 2nd at approximately 9:50 A.M., Jackson Police and Investigators are dispatched to the area of Revere Circle, Post House North, for a report of shots fired. Responding officers located a victim along with a crime scene. The victim did not appear to have a life threatening injury but was transported by Emergency Medical Services for treatment. Based upon preliminary evidence, Jackson Police do not believe either of these shootings were random acts of violence but targeted acts of violence. Jackson Police Investigators are receiving very little cooperation from the victims as they tirelessly work to identify and apprehend the suspect(s) of these violent assaults.

“Observe school safety zones” Cont’d from page 1
Each year more than 56 million children travel from their homes to attend school. Drivers must take precautions to account for increased traffic and dangers as children return to school, and these school zones become a point of focus for local law enforcement in the mornings and afternoons. Drivers need to be on high alert during the time periods of 7-8 am and 3-4 pm since these are typically the times when children are going to and from school. Accident prevention requires all drivers to pay special attention when driving in or near school zones. Cell phone use is one of several laws local motorists need to be aware of. Using a cell phone in a school zone has been illegal since 2018. And it’s now illegal to hold or support a cell phone with any part of your body while driving anywhere. Motorist can make calls with a hands free Bluetooth device if they need to, and if they’re using GPS navigation, they must have the phone on a Mount type holder that won’t obstruct their view. Other laws include the following: School zones have a speed limit of 20 MPH unless otherwise posted. If you go faster, you could get a reckless driving citation, which carries a fine and adds points to your drivers record. It’s illegal to pass a stopped school bus with the stop signal arm extended and children boarding or disembarking. Unless on a divided highway with a physical barrier - like a concrete median - traffic on both sides must stop when a school bus with red flashing lights and the stop signal arm extended is stopped. You also get a fine and points on your license if ticketed with failure to do so. Tennessee law mandates children between 4-8 years old, who are shorter than four feet, nine inches must at least be ok a belt positioning booster seat, if not a car seat with a five point harness. Children 9-12 that are at least four feet nine inches tall must be bucked in with a seat belt preferably in the back seat. Older children can legally ride in the front seat but must wear a seat belt. You can be fined $50 if children in your car are not correctly restrained. Every year law enforcement and school officials receive complaints about distracted drivers in school zones, and this is the one place that we must be aware is our surroundings at all times. Please do your part to protect our school children and obey the traffic laws in Tennessee. For more information on traffic safety in Jackson and Madison county contact the Tennessee Highway Patrol 1 - 731-423-6630, Madison County Sheriff Office - 731-423-6000 or Jackson Police Department-731-425-8400. 08-05-21 CSENEWS P.8
And Your Point is . . .
Recognize The Synergy Moving Forward
What a week it has been! Training for the new semester, attending the Superintendent’s luncheon at the Civic Center and wrapped up the week by attending the Equity, Business, & Economic Development Conference hosted by PDG. Dr. Marlon King definitely knows how to celebrate district employees as he allowed the principals to recognize their faculty and staff. He received a standing ovation from appreciative attendees as we prepare to accept the challenges of the upcoming semester. Dr. Dub Oliver gave the invocation and we heard from the leadership team and Mayor Conger and the City of Jackson are on board with the positive changes taking place at JMCSS. Matt Marshall shared a compelling story about his passion for serving his community and JMCSS. Dr. King asked for understanding of the English teachers in the audience as he said; “You ain’t seen nothing yet!” I am just beginning to realize my place in history at JMCSS as I watch and listen to the stories and excitement generated by JCM reopening this fall. Liberty hosted personal development seminars and training this week and I witnessed the pride and excitement of a teacher assigned to teach at JCM greeting her former teacher at JCM who is at Liberty Tech now and has a Dr. in front of his name!
Synergize as Together We Can Do Great Things
Students take ownership that you are the building blocks for the future of Jackson and the region. There were fantastic speakers at the PDG Conference; Col. Michael Minor, the first African American from Jackson to graduate from West Point. Charles Adams went from making 3.35 per hour at Walgreens to a 6-figure salary, Matt Marshall is the first African-American CEO of United Way in America and he is promoting the Jackson Equity Project to encourage our youth to make Jackson their home. There were speakers in finance and banking, as well as professionals with years of success to help non-profits and small business and entrepreneurs. Training them in how to build and transfer wealth. It was a tremendous value to all attendees and I wish there had been more young people in attendance. I was encouraged to see the Chairman of the School Board in attendance, Mr. Pete Johnson to keep his finger on the pulse of the community JMCSS has been tasked to serve. Mr. Andre Gist spoke on the importance of preparation and perseverance needed to succeed in big business with a focus on customer service. For the future to be bright we will need people to lead, where are they? Take advantage of the opportunity that is before you and grow with JMCSS and the City of Jackson. Mayor William Rawls of Brownsville (elected in 2014 and the first African-American mayor of Brownsville), was exceptional in his presentation as it turned out; he was the mayoral “panel” as the other two mayors had something come up. He brought up that the return on investment for the Megasite has potential to be 7 billion. As the needs of the region change, needs shift, and the market changes. He concluded that if you boost your middle class, support public education and promote career opportunities, you will keep homegrown talent engaged in the community. We need to create more opportunities for women and minorities. I was invited to be in the picture with these distinguished and accomplished gentlemen. I was humbled and grateful to have gained wisdom from each one. “Never about the what but the how!” ~Gwen Gavin PDG Don Polley | Education contributor - (Contact don@donpolley.com)

Poetic Expressions
We Real Cool BY GWENDOLYN BROOKS The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel. We real cool. We Left school. We Lurk late. We Strike straight. We Sing sin. We Thin gin. We Jazz June. We Die soon. Gwendolyn Brooks, “We Real Cool” from Selected Poems. Copyright © 1963 by Gwendolyn Brooks. Reprinted with the permission of the Estate of Gwendolyn Brooks. Source: Poetry (1959)
Gwendolyn Brooks In the 1920s, it was African American poets like Langston Hughes who pioneered a new kind of poetry – drawing on jazz rhythms and African-American Vernacular – during the Harlem Renaissance. Gwendolyn Brooks built upon this new tradition for this 1959 poem, which was inspired by seeing a group of young boys in a pool hall when they should have been in school. How do they view themselves, she wonders? This poem attempts to give them a voice – and in doing so, reflects the new phenomenon of the 1950s: the teenager.
