FALL GARDENS

West Tennessee

OUTDOORS

With all of the hot weather we have had it is hard to believe fall is right with Ray Jones around the corner but it is. The time is right now to get the fall gardens Send photos to: started. numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614 Fall gardens are wonderful because they have so many advantages over summer gardens. It is hard to tell what the best advantage is but to me it’s not having to fight grass like in summer. Of course another advantage is the cooler temperatures help eliminate many pest that invade your summer gardens. Also the fall climate allows you to enjoy your time spent in the outdoors. Greens, collards and broccoli are all falls vegetables and some summer veggies such as squash can be planted in fall as well. Check with you local Agricultural Agency for tips on what might work best for you.

Pope Elementary student expelled for possessing firearm at school BY DAVID THOMAS SEPTEMBER 13, 2021

JACKSON, Tenn. – A fourth-grade student at Pope Elementary has been expelled and awaiting a juvenile court summons after he was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun at school on Monday. An initial investigation by the Jackson Police Department determined the gun belonged to the child’s mother. “We are grateful to the student who reported this incident to the teacher. The teacher called me immediately. The student at issue was removed from the classroom and the officers responded to our call very quickly,” Pope Elementary School principal Tracy Vowell said. The now expelled student, a 9-year-old, showed the firearm to a peer while students were outside of class during a restroom break. Moments later, and after being removed from the class, the now expelled student produced the gun from his coat pocket to give to school officials once he was asked about the gun. According to Jay Stanfield, an investigator with the Jackson Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit who reported to the scene, the student is too young to be arrested. “While we are thankful this incident ended without harm to students or faculty, we will take every effort to hold the child and his parents accountable. What happened at Pope School today should not be repeated. “We’re reminding all parents to be diligent in both firearm safety and with proper oversight of their children. “I am working closely with Judge Christy Little and the Madison County Juvenile Court to hold students and their parents accountable for actions like this,” Superintendent Dr. Marlon King said. The student was released to his mother and grandmother. A petition will be issued today to summon the child and his parents to court later this The people month. “Once again we see the appearing on these good decisions of one pages (4 & 5) only student helping to miniindicates they were mize the poor decisions of another. We appreciate the booked into the jail prompt response of those and does not students, educators, and indicate guilt. law enforcement officers CSENews who acted to mitigate harm,” Dr. King said. 09-16-21 CSENEWS P.5

And Your Point is . . .

SCHOOL THREAT

“Don’t worry, the ones who talk about it never do it”

“Oh, he’s just running his mouth!” WRONG!! The ones who DO IT almost always talk about it and many times those who are “running their mouth” are rehearsing what they are planning to do by verbalizing it. Two teenagers were caught last Thursday (September 9th) planning to commit mass murder at a Florida middle school. According to witnesses, the pair, 13 and 14 year old boys, wanted to emulate the Columbine murderers from years ago. Another student told a teacher one of the boys had a gun in his backpack, and the follow-up investigation interrupted the violent attack, possibly saving many lives. No gun was found in the backpack, however the to were said to have maps of the school and other items indicating the ere preparing an attack.

Rule #1’ NEVER TOTALLY IGNORE A THREAT!! School board members Doris Black, James William Johnson and AJ Massey.

SETTING A POSITIVE COURSE FOR THE FUTURE For those that follow my articles, you know that I strive to cast a positive light on what is taking place at JMCSS. I would like to commend this school board for recognizing the accomplishments of Dr. Marlon King in just one year. They have extended his contract for four years which should translate into sustainable gains throughout the system. I had occasion to attend both the work session and the regular school board meeting this week and was pleased to see that they had unanimously agreed to keep the same officers for another year. Continuity is much needed in this age of pandemic and continual adjustment to keep up with state and local guidelines for health and safety. JCM is almost completed and Madison Academic should be not too far behind. During the regular school board meeting Dr. King recognized student accomplishments in academics and sports. Much to my delight there were two students from Liberty Tech that were recognized for excellence as ambassadors for CTE. I was also treated to chuckling by the members of the school board which was something that was rare in years past. There was also a report on prospects pertaining to Pope School. Now is the time for all stakeholders to pull together to make the future bright and restore the luster to JMCSS.

Unity and Perseverance Can Overcome Challenges

At Liberty Tech we had an assembly on Thursday. So that the Junior and Senior class candidates could plead their case and gain support to be elected to represent their respective classes. The Juniors were much more exuberant and optimistic of the future. The Senior class seemed to want to work for more immediate and practical concerns of their classmates. A good job done by all involved. Friday our own Marine and faculty member Mr. Mangrum led a very compelling tribute of 9-11-2001. The choir did a great job on the national anthem. This generation needs to be reminded of how our lives changed on that tragic day. We need to return to the sense of unity, and the patriotic spirit, displayed by all peoples of all generations and backgrounds on the days following the devastating blow to our sense of freedom and security. Unless we learn from our past history, our future is likely to flounder during periods of uncertainty when we need clarity and decisiveness. “The task of the modern educator is not to cut down the jungles but to irrigate the deserts.” ~C.S. Lewis Don Polley | Education contributor (Contact don@donpolley.com)

Here are some things to look for in a verbal or written threat: Credibility – Did the information originate from a credible source? Someone who “cries wolf” all the time or someone who has good judgment. Viability – Is the action that is being threatened reasonably capable of taking place? “I am going to shoot Ms. Williams tomorrow” vs. “I will use a moon rock to knock Ms. Williams in the head”

Immediate or Remote –

“I will be in Ms. Williams’s office to shoot her within the next 10 minutes” vs. “As soon as I get enough money to buy a gun, I’m going to shoot her”

Seriousness –

“I’m going to kill Ms. Williams the next time I have a chance” vs. “I will sure give Ms. Williams a piece of my mind when I see her!” Another thing to consider is how DETAILED the threat may be. Did the threat address the following:

Why does the person want to commit the violent act? “ Ms. Williams shouldn’t have failed me. Now I won’t graduate!”

How will they commit the act?

“I’m going to hide in the shrubs next to where she parks her car and shoot her when she opens her car door.”

Do they demonstrate they have the ability and resources to commit the act?

“I am going to use the shotgun my grandfather gave me to hunt with.”

How will they benefit?

“Once I kill her, she will be replaced by Mr. Jones and he will pass me the rest of the year.” ANY threat must be reported to school officials as soon as parents or students are made aware a threat has been made! Lane races to early lead; tops Clark Atlanta

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Lane College football team opened conference play on Saturday with a cross divisional contest against Clark Atlanta. The Dragons raced out to a big lead early in the first quarter behind a pair of touchdown runs from Ike Brown and a receiving touchdown from Micah Grigsby off the arm of quarterback Tarik McKinzie. Lane’s first three drives totaled just eight plays over two minutes and forty-six seconds and covered 112 yards but resulted in three touchdowns and 21-0 lead for the visitors with 9:15 left in the first quarter. The two teams went scoreless from there until late in the first half when the Panthers got on the board with an 11-yard touchdown reception by Jerry Drakar. The Dragons bounced right back with a seven play, 72-yard drive that saw Mikhi Lyles catch a 30-yard touchdown pass from McKinzie to make the score 28-7 at the half. The hosts added a pair of field goals in the third quarter before Lane iced the game in the fourth quarter with a seven play 79-yard drive capped off by a 5-yard score from Brown. McKinzie (right) finished the game 25-of-38 for 318 yards and two touchdowns. Brown carried the ball 25 times for 121 yards and three touchdowns. Virgil Young led the receivers with six catches for 101 yards. Andrew Farmer had a big day on the defensive side of the ball. The senior had five tackles including 4.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Jeremiah Brown had five tackles and an interception while Jeffrey Johnson led the defense with six tackles. The Dragons will travel to Georgia next Saturday for a non-conference matchup with Fort Valley State. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM EST.

Ryan has spent the last year coaching at the Softball University, a part of the Los Angeles Dodgers Training Academy, while also serving as an assistant coach at Hillcrest Christian School in Thousand Oaks, California. “We are excited to welcome Danni into our program,” said Worthington. “She brings a great deal of knowledge and love for the game. She will be a tremendous asset to our student-athletes and will be especially instrumental in the development of our pitching staff.” A native of Thousand Oaks, Ryan began her collegiate career at the University of Toledo before transferring and finishing at Idaho State University. She split time in the circle, playing first base, and serving as the designated player. Ryan was also the team’s community service organizer. Ryan prepped at Thousand Oaks High School where she lettered in volleyball, basketball, and softball. She received her team’s Lifetime Achievement Award and was Most Valuable Player in both her junior and senior years. As a senior, she was named second-team all-conference and the Daily News All-Star team. “I am extremely excited to join the Lane College family,” said Ryan. “I look forward to being on campus and getting right to work with our team in preparation for the upcoming season.” Ryan earned her bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Sign Language Studies from Idaho State University.

Jackson, Tenn (September 10, 2021) - Lane College, anticipating continued health and safety concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic, will shift to various virtual events and forgo some in-person events for this year’s Homecoming. The homecoming football game will continue to take place in-person on Saturday, October 2 at 2:00 p.m against Texas College at Lane Field. The canceled in-person events include the annual Homecoming Gospel Concert, the prayer breakfast, parade, and tailgate extravaganza. “The parade and tailgate typically attract thousands of alumni and visitors,” Alumni Affairs Director Braylin Laster said. “It is our desire to be prudent with decisions about the health and safety of our alumni, friends, community, and our campus home.” After a great deal of discussion, the change to a hybrid celebration comes in response to the continual rise in COVID cases and deaths in the state of Tennessee, as well as the recent joint resolution by the Madison County Covid 19 Task Force encouraging individuals to avoid crowds in order to assist in diminishing the ongoing spread of COVID in our community. As of September 2, 2021, Tennessee ranked number 1 in the nation for new COVID cases per capita, pushing hospitals to the brink. Given the circumstances, hosting a massive in-person event will present a public health risk to students and the community at-large. “The leadership of the College understands the excitement a Lane College homecoming brings to alumni, friends, and the West Tennessee community,”said Laster. “We are taking actions to preserve the smaller on campus events that alumni enjoy that can be managed with campus protocols. We are working diligently to make sure that the safety of our students and alumni are a priority.” Specific events and activities related to the modified approach are being finalized and will be communicated in the coming days.

Best wishes, Braylin Laster Director of Alumni Affairs

Sorority Recognizes Sensational Seven Line of ‘96’

Selected Poems by Rita Dove

Here in one volume is a selection of the extraordinary poems of Rita Dove, who, as the nation’s Poet Laureate from 1993 to 1995, brought poetry into the lives of millions of people. Along with a new introduction and poem, Selected Poems comprises Dove’s collections The Yellow House on the Corner, which includes a group of poems devoted to the themes of slavery and freedom; Museum, intimate ruminations on home and the world; and finally, Thomas and Beulah, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1987, a verse cycle loosely based on her grandparents’ lives.

I want to extend love to the Sensational Seven Line of ‘96’ for your 25 years of sisterhood in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Thanks for including me in the celebration as your Basileus of Theta Eta Omega at that time. My hat is tilted to Soror Melina Jones for organizing this event. Much laughter, hugging, talking, picture taking, eating, and socializing took place at Hudson Restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee Saturday morning on September 11, 2021. You all welcome you Frat brother, Dr. Frank E. Thomas with so much love as well. Love for each other is priceless. Friendship and sisterhood is also priceless, as well as precious. You all exemplified all of that and more on Saturday morning. I am indeed impressed and elated for the warmth and sisterly love shown throughout the morning and afternoon. May God’s abiding love be with each of you. Give God the Glory that all of you were able to attend, to still be in your right frame of mind, and still living. Thanks for taking care of our dinner as well. Gwendolyn Thomas
