Year II No.42

FISHING SIGNS

West Tennessee Throughout the years people have always had beliefs about when fish OUTDOORS will or will not bite. To this end I’m reminded of the time I asked a guy with Ray Jones Send photos to: if his dog would bite when I got out of the car and he responded “he got numberonecoach@hotmail.com teeth”. or 731-694-8614 My comparison is that fish might bite any time they feel compelled to bite. However, there are certain times when you feel there is a greater chance for success than others. For certain when the sign is in the tail fish will bite more than when the sign is in the mouth. If you catch fish and see the tail is red it is a great time to fish. Spawning season is the best bet for catching fish close to the bank but that is not a sign it is seasonal but coincides with signs. One of the most consistent signs is when the dogwood trees are blooming. That is the sign popping right now in West Tennessee. This one goes back as far as the trees and rivers and one you can count on. From the time they start blooming until they stop there is a magical connection with fish that always seems to work. Regardless of which signs you believe or do not believe the time it right in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. PHOTO IS PAT HOLMES WITH CRAPPIE CAUGHT DOING DOGWOOD BLOOM SEASON.

Sanitizing Services by Patricia Hamilton

I’ll scrub reality’s grubby paws with anti-bacterial soap, spray its t-shirt with stain remover and toss it in with the whites, hose down its muddy sneakers with the nozzle set at full blast. If I describe the double rainbow the last time you saw your mother, I won’t mention the dead cow in the dry creek bed. Or the part about the rusty barbed wire on that long, triumphal hike. No one need ever know your heart slammed the air right out of your lungs as you stood waiting at the wrong bus stop in Calais, not another soul in sight. They’ll be too entranced by those chalky cliffs shimmering across the channel as the ferry churns toward Dover, never once suspecting gaps, edits, erasures.

Deliver Us When will our deliverance come from crowded cells and cemeteries without markers Our streets have become makeshift battlefields scarred by decades of war on drugs and poverty Hostilities leveraged against our people grisly images of America devouring its’ young How many lynchings must we witness when will the terror cease We have traversed turbulent waters our numbers dwindling, souls gripped with fear, hopelessness Generations of helpless children forsaken, not knowing their fathers mothers left to calculating vices in hardened empty villages Will we ever be free in a land that bleaches the blood stain from whites while fading the dreams of colored We have been tied up, hosed down, drowned, pimped, prostituted kneed down, burned down, locked down, gunned down, stripped of our dignity

Snowmelt and leaky foundations kept my father busy every spring: sweeping lakes of iron-cold water over the basement floor with a brush broom, spooning loosened mortar sand back into the weeping cracks it had washed through. I could hear him down there, raging against the malicious purposes of weather, cinder-block walls, landlords. In our old house he was everywhere, in every room, rumbling like the voice of God up through the furnace ducts.

Ordered to stain foreign soil with blood of the innocent at the hands of merciless men who pledge liberty and justice for all

When he yelled for me to bring him a dustpan, the screws in the floor-grates rattled.

When will our season come my veins bulge with fury, my heart aches

Madison County Sheriff request increase in budget $19,000,000 expected for Pandemic Relief Funds

Madison County Commissioner Doug Stephenson who also serves as Chairman of the Madison County Budget Committee says; “the Sheriff is requesting more money than they’ve requested in previous years.” Speaking at the County Budget Committe meeting last week, Stephenson placed emphasizes on the Sheriff’s budget proposal. “It’s about $25,800,000 which is an increase over our amended budget of around $23,000,000 last year,” said Stephenson. As Chairman of the Budget Committee, he said “no budget decisions can be made for any department until the committee receives clarification on how pandemic relief funds can be distributed.” “We are going to be receiving $19,000,000 from the federal government because of the pandemic, but it hasn’t been decided how we can use that money yet “ said Stephenson.

Teacher Comments Ignigtes Facebook Firestorm, Sparks Suspension JMCSS Superintendent suspends teacher after ‘questionable comments posted on social media’

DAVID THOMAS APRIL 15, 2021- NEWS/TALK 101.5 FM & 93.1 FM A teacher in the Jackson-Madison County School System has been suspended without pay by superintendent Marlon King after his office was made aware of “Questionable comments posted on social media.” King has asked for a full investigation to bring resolution to the incident.

Janis Carroll-Shell - 4/14 Today at recess I mentioned that I got in the habit of not wearing jewelry when I worked at Lincoln Elementary... not the best neighborhood to be wearing diamonds. When I got home tonight my wedding ring was on the floor. How odd is that?!?!? Janis, I see from your profile that your husband passed away and that this ring holds a lot of memory for you. I empathize with that. However...you cannot say these sorts of things, and to be honest....it is very worrisome that you THINK this way. The children need someone who looks at them and believes in them and their potential. NOT someone who looks at them and assumes they are thugs, thieves, and criminals. Your statement makes so many assumptions based on race and socioeconomic status, and it is apparent that you are tone deaf when it comes to this. This sort of mindset is no longer tolerated, which is a good thing. I hope you will work on this, moving forward. RM You got in the habit of not wearing jewelry while working at Lincoln because it was not the best neighborhood to wear diamonds in!!!! Or was it really because of your preconceived notion about the neighborhood. In all of the years that I have been in Jackson, I have never heard of a teacher getting robbed while working at Lincoln. Janis, I never expected such a statement to come from you. It is disappointing. There is no way you could have adequately educated children who lived in an area that you felt this way about their community. Smh. NP Nicki Dee Hey boo! So uhhhhh, why she teaching in a neighborhood she scared of? Lol SJ No one is coming in your CLASSROOM to steal your mediocre diamonds. God doesn’t like ugly, that’s why your ring was on the floor. CCW Jasmine Cole a lot of children get discouraged in learning because of people who don’t have a heart for the community they serve in--KS-M Her preconceived notions about children who live in that neighborhood should make her ineligible to teach there anymore. She assumes they are criminals, so how can she be objective in educating them? Despicable. LM Wow!!! I lived on that street went to that school and I had diamonds and gold what the hell!!! do that have to with your ring ? Make it make since teacher SH I’m sorry that u had this feeling when you were working there.... but I’m here to tell you I lived over there all my life and I had diamonds and gold and I was never robbed or anything was ever taken from me.... criminals are every where not just in a certain area they are area wide bless your heart ... I hate you have carried this misperception of this area Lord I hope she didn’t treat the kids according to her thoughts this is sad asl. LCT So Sad,I stay over there on Parkway East and my Kids and Grandkid went there, hope you were not there then.praying that your Heart Change. ST

Mary Martin is with MayMay Anderson at Lincoln Elementary School. Jackson, TN

So by now, everyone has seen that a teacher who PREVIOUSLY worked at Lincoln made a comment on Facebook that was very unacceptable. With that being said... I want to show you just a glimpse of the real Lincoln. Working at Lincoln Elementary School is loving each child that walks through the door. It’s calling to check on them when they aren’t at school for the day. It’s bringing your own baby up to the school to meet your other babies and watching them fall in love with him. It’s showing up at work every day with a smile and giving hugs and I love you’s the moment they walk in and when they leave. It’s taking 5 minutes to be silly and take selfies because it’s been a long day. It’s redirecting and teaching. It’s wiping tears, putting bandaids on boo boos, being a mother, sister, friend, counselor, aunt, cousin, and everything in between. Teaching at Lincoln is not looking at what the child looks like, what color they are, or even what kind of disability they may have. Teaching at Lincoln is seeing a future in every scholar that walks through the doors of Lincoln Elementary. I will proudly tell you I work at Lincoln Elementary School today, tomorrow, or any day you ask. Don’t base one woman’s comment on our school or the teachers, admin, and staff in our school. There is not a single adult working at Lincoln Elementary that would not fight and advocate for every child in that building. Please enjoy these pictures as you see a small glimpse into the love we share with each other! #teamLincoln #wearefamily P.S. I wear my jewelry everyday. 04-22-21 CSENEWS P.11

Lane routs Tuskegee in Nashville

by Joel Worthington NASHVILLE, Tenn. | The Lane College baseball team took part in the Music City Diamond Classic on Saturday against Tuskegee University at First Horizon Park. Lane (8-14) wasted no time getting on the board as the Dragons scored in each of their first three at-bats, including a three run third inning highlighted by an RBI double from Kalum Banks. The teams traded scoreless innings until Lane again posted a three spot in the seventh inning behind RBI sinlges from Banks, Javien Woods, and Jahneal Armstrong. Chris O’Neal rounded out the scoring with a solo home run in the eighth inning. Thomas Arias (2-2) earned the win in 8.0 innings of dominate work. Arias, who did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, surrendered only one hit and struck out five batters. Banks finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Prior to last Sunday’s game, Lane honored the 2021 Seniors as well as the 2020 HBCU National Championship team. Additionally, the Dragons retired the jersey of the late Courtney Joyner.

WOMAN KILLED AFTER VEHICLE COLLIDES INTO JACKSON HOME

April 15, 2021 Julia Ewoldt - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson police are calling it a tragic crash that’s left a woman dead and a house severely damaged. The people who live at this house on the corner of North Highland and Lambuth Boulevard sent us these pictures, showing a car that plowed into the front of their home around 1:30 Thursday morning. The family inside the house is ok, but police confirm one of the people in the vehicle died. The family has identified her as Melecia Cherry. “She was born like one of my own,” said Delores Westbrook, Cherry’s grandmother. They say she and her boyfriend were driving south on North Highland after a night out, when she lost control of the vehicle. “For all we know, she was driving at a high speed, coming around the deep curve and couldn’t catch control of the car,” Cherry’s brother Keyshawn Dirkans said. The vehicle hit the house, then the car parked in the driveway, before rolling down the hill.

WTLS to Host West Tennessee Native Jim Emison for Annual Law Day Celebration

West Tennessee Legal Services is excited to announce award winning attorney and civil rights investigator Jim Emison will be the keynote speaker for the 2021 annual Law Day celebration. Emison is an award winning lawyer from Alamo, Tennessee, who has been investigating the civil rights cold case murder of NAACP member Elbert Williams in Brownsville, Tennessee. He has obtained an official State of Tennessee historical marker honoring Elbert Williams and was instrumental in bringing about the memorial service on the 75th anniversary of Elbert Williams’s death. A team of experts assembled by Emison is working to locate Elbert Williams’s unmarked grave, and he hopes to persuade the United States Department of Justice to reopen its investigation into Elbert Williams’s death. This year’s Law Day theme is “Advancing the Rule of Law, Now.” The theme was decided by the American Bar Association to remind everyone that we the people share the responsibility to promote the rule of law, defend liberty, and pursue justice. “Jim’s activism to preserve the memory of Elbert Williams and to seek justice for him now fits perfectly with this year’s theme,” said Andy Cole, Pro Bono Coordinator at WTLS. Law Day is held every year to celebrate the role of law in our society and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. This year’s celebration will take place virtually via Zoom and will be held on May 3 from 1-2:30. The event is open to everyone, not just legal professionals. You can register for the event at https://www.wtls.org/ events/cle-online-registration/. About West Tennessee Legal Services
