CHURCH AND COVID

West Tennessee COVID has certainly caused many to change the way we do things on the OUTDOORS outside but the spirit of church is still with Ray Jones Send photos to: on the inside. Although some church numberonecoach@hotmail.com congregations are still conducting or 731-694-8614 services on the outside of the building the results are the same. Physically members congregate outside in parking lots, choirs are singing the same good gospel music, pastors are delivering the messages through mega speakers and the soul is still being stirred. COVID may have caused changes to the order of services but God has not allowed it to change the hearts of His people. All around West Tennessee you can find services in church parking lots and sometimes people attend who had no intentions of going to church that day. You can hear the lovely gospel music while passing by parking lots and even hear the word. It is kind of like the old outdoor movie theater where you sat in your cars and watched movies with popcorn and drinks. Many church goers have breakfast in their cars while attending service. With all the activities that West Tennessee Outdoors has to offer it now has added Sunday morning church service and soul saving. PHOTO IS FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH PARKING LOT SERVICE.

MADISON COUNTY MASK MANDATE EXPIRES

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department, in conjunction with the local COVID-19 task force, announces plans today to allow the face covering requirement in Madison County to expire. The mask mandate will expire Wednesday, Mar. 31 at 11:59 p.m. “I’m pleased with how our COVID-19 numbers are looking,” Regional Director Kim Tedford said. “We’ve seen a drastic decrease in the number of COVID-19 and flu cases thanks to citizens wearing masks and doing their part. I’m cautiously optimistic people will get vaccinated and continue to take precautions to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

DAVE AND LAURA PERRYWHITE recently

celebrated their 16 Wedding Anniversay

Many interns are assigned to UT-TSU Extension in Madison County. One of the most recent has been Devin Ellison of Martin, TN. Ashley Hillsman and Devin conducted a Grocery Tour recently. I asked Devin to write our article on health this month so we would learn from a dietetic intern just a small amount of the education she gave to those grocery tour participants. Have you ever stood in the middle of a grocery aisle trying to determine which food option is healthier, only to leave the grocery store feeling frustrated and overwhelmed? If so, you are not alone! One in three Americans say they were never taught about nutrition and feel overwhelmed when shopping for healthy foods. If you can relate or are interested to learn more ways to shop for healthier eating while on a budget, here are some tips: -P11 04-08-21 CSENEWS P.3

Henderson, Tennessee (April 2, 2021) — An intramural sports field at Freed-Hardeman University will be dedicated to the life and memory of a recent alumnus Thursday, April 8, 2021. Lucas Russo, a 2019 graduate from Burnsville, Mississippi, died Nov. 9, 2020, following surgery. Shortly after his death, students launched a fundraising effort to improve the field where Russo had competed in many intramural games. Their crowd-funding campaign netted more than $20,000 in two weeks to improve the field. The dedication ceremony will include remarks from FHU President David R. Shannon and Beverly Russo, the honoree’s mother, followed by a ceremonial first pitch by Shannon. Adam Cross, FHU regional development director who coordinated the fundraising activities, will then pitch to Richard Russo, Sr., the honoree’s father, for the first hit. A slide show encapsulating Lucas Russo’s time at FHU will also be shown. Phase 1 of the improvement project is nearing completion. The projects have included general cleanup of the field and surrounding area, refurbishing the scoreboard, painting the bleachers, installing a new fence, and constructing a press box and pavilion. Richard Russo/Nathan McPheters Construction built the pavilion with materials donated by Woody and Crystal Loden. Volunteers led by Richard Russo, Sr.; Shannon Sewell, FHU director of facilities; and Cross did the remainder of the work. More than 40 volunteers including students, FHU faculty and staff, and members of the Russo family contributed their time and talent. Phase 2 of the project will be completed this summer when weather conditions are more suitable. The current infield dirt will be removed and 25 tons of clay/sand infield dirt will replace it. New bases and pitching rubber will be installed and the outfield will be improved. Lucas Russo earned a Bachelor of Social Work and a Bachelor of Science in youth ministry from FHU. He was an Ayers Scholar, a member of Phi Kappa Alpha, emcee of Makin’ Music, member of the Student Government Association, and member of intramural sports teams. He also worked at Mid-South Youth Camp. Organizers of the campaign to improve and rename the field said Russo, “loved people and made sure they knew they were loved.” They commented on his big personality, big smile and big laugh. “His influence went far beyond any particular group or club; he had a big impact on everyone he met,” they said.

The Hill We Climb

When day comes we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never-ending shade? The loss we carry, a sea we must wade We’ve braved the belly of the beast We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace And the norms and notions of what just is Isn’t always just-ice And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it Somehow we do it Somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken but simply unfinished We the successors of a country and a time Where a skinny Black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one And yes we are far from polished far from pristine but that doesn’t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect We are striving to forge a union with purpose To compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man And so we lift our gazes not to what stands between us but what stands before us We close the divide because we know, to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another We seek harm to none and harmony for all Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true: That even as we grieved, we grew That even as we hurt, we hoped

April 8 pages.indd 9

That even as we tired, we tried That we’ll forever be tied together, victorious Not because we will never again know defeat but because we will never again sow division Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree And no one shall make them afraid If we’re to live up to our own time Then victory won’t lie in the blade But in all the bridges we’ve made That is the promised glade The hill we climb If only we dare It’s because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it’s the past we step into and how we repair it We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it Would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy And this effort very nearly succeeded But while democracy can be periodically delayed it can never be permanently defeated In this truth in this faith we trust For while we have our eyes on the future history has its eyes on us This is the era of just redemption We feared at its inception We did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour but within it we found the power to author a new chapter To offer hope and laughter to ourselves So while once we asked, how could we possibly prevail over catastrophe? Now we assert How could catastrophe possibly prevail over us? We will not march back to what was

but move to what shall be A country that is bruised but whole, benevolent but bold, fierce and free We will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation Our blunders become their burdens But one thing is certain: If we merge mercy with might, and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left with Every breath from my bronze-pounded chest, we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one We will rise from the gold-limbed hills of the west, we will rise from the windswept northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution We will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the midwestern states, we will rise from the sunbaked south We will rebuild, reconcile and recover and every known nook of our nation and every corner called our country, our people diverse and beautiful will emerge, battered and beautiful When day comes we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid The new dawn blooms as we free it For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it If only we’re brave enough to be it Reprinted from https://thehill.com/ Photo: gettey images & https://www.latimes. com/

And Your Point is . . . COMMENTARY:

Public Policy and Gun Violence - By John E. Warren, Publisher, The San Diego Voice & Viewpoint

Published April 4, 2021 SAN DIEGO VOICE AND VIEWPOINT Passing laws that make it harder to purchase guns by people who should not have them is not a threat to the Second Amendment right to “keep” and bear arms. It reaches a point that the people who commit these murders with guns are partners with those who refuse to pass the necessary laws to block or slow their purchase. We must start voting for people who hold office on the basis of what they do on these issues once in office and make their terms “one time” if they fail to address these issues. We can only do this using the ballot box and the ability to organize against those who are against us. The gun violence of the past week is another issue to be added to the voter suppression actions of radical right wing Republicans who care more about themselves than the oath of office they took when elected. The gun violence of the past week is another issue to be added to the voter suppression actions of radical right wing Republicans who care more about themselves than the oath of office they took when elected. (Photo: i SHARETWEET In the past seven days, we have experienced a tremendous loss of life due to gun violence from Atlanta, Georgia to Boulder Colorado and the other five states that have reported deaths by gun violence. In some areas we now know that shootings that don’t result in deaths are often excluded from these reports. A closer look reveals that the American people currently want more gun control, at the time of these tragedies, but the lobbyists for gun manufacturers and gun owners have created a money barrier between what most people want in terms of safety and the politicians who are bought off and refuse to act because of fear of losing either campaign contributions, or having their political contributions go to those who run against them. Public Policy is the process by which the will of the people is translated into political action, resulting in laws that make changes. Public Policy by nature, will always have two sides: The Pros and The Cons. What we must do as citizen participants in the political process is become, and stay, aware of the issues on either side. Passing laws that make it harder to purchase guns by people who should not have them is not a threat to the Second Amendment right to “keep” and bear arms. To fail to honor that oath is “malfeasance in office” and grounds for legal complaints with their State Attorney Generals, or Recall. We must not be afraid to use the full weight of the law, including calling a “hate crime” a “hate crime” when the gun use reveals a pattern, beyond the actual murder of those killed, by the use of guns as a weapon of choice. Gun violence and voter suppression laws represent the two sides of public policy. We must learn to recognize and take action if we are to literally survive.

It’s a Crime to Be Unhealthy!

#4 of 10 Articles by Well Connected Communities Coalition UT-TSU Extension Madison County By: Susan Holloway CONT’D FROM PAGE 2 Fresh Produce section is an excellent location to begin each trip. It is conveniently located at the storefront. Add-

ing fruits and vegetables to meals and snacks is never to be overlooked. They help provide our bodies with essential nutrients with potential benefits, including heart health and even increased energy. Often, pre-packaged, fresh fruits and vegetables, such as pineapple chunks or a salad kit, will be sold at a reduced price due to its freshness date. Sometimes, an item might be on sale, but its freshness date does not end for three or four more days. This a great incentive to pack in some fruit and veggies before the “best by” date expires. BREAD/PASTA NOODLES Options such as whole grain or whole wheat are heart-healthy recommended choices; they provide us fiber. Fiber is healthy because it helps to aid with feeling fuller. Aside from increased fullness, fiber is a slower digesting food known for its potential heart-health benefits concerning blood sugar and cholesterol. CANNED VEGETABLES Choosing to buy the lower sodium canned veggies is a small way to help reduce sodium intake. The label might read, “No Salt Added” or “Low Sodium.” If you have hypertension (high blood pressure) or have been advised by your doctor to monitor salt intake, this is an excellent choice. Excessive amounts of sodium consumption can negatively impact heart-health, so finding small ways to reduce sodium could quickly add up. Tip: if lower sodium options are not available, pour the canned veggies in a strainer bowl over the sink and rinse with cold water to wash off the salt. COLD CUT SANDWICH MEATS Opting for leaner sandwich meats such as turkey, chicken breast, ham, or roast beef are healthy options. When deciding which meat to buy, directing your attention to the nutrition label to find the amount of saturated and trans-fat is a simple way to determine which product has the lowest amount. The benefits of limiting daily consumption of saturated and trans-fatty foods could help with better heart-health and cholesterol. Shopping Smart Tips: Always review the grocery store’s weekly sale paper for the best deals, buy in bulk, buy store brand instead of name brand (if possible), make out a list of items needed before grocery shopping; stick to buying listed items only, freeze fresh produce for a later time if it begins to ripen. SNACK TIP: When the afternoon hunger pains strike, instead of avoiding the hunger cue or reaching for candy, try a balanced snack option. Pairing fruit and protein-rich foods, such as an orange with almonds or banana and peanut butter, is an excellent way to aid in fullness until dinner time. It is advised to always consult your doctor or registered dietitian for all dietary concerns about general health and chronic disease states. SIXTH PERSON INDICTED IN DEADLY 2020 FAYETTE COUNTY SHOOTING

BURGER KING CUSTOMER OPENS FIRE THROUGH DRIVE-THRU WINDOW OVER LONG WAIT TIME The incident occurred in Memphis, Tenn., last Tuesday By Michael Hollan | Fox News

Some people take the term “fast-food” a little too literally. Authorities in Tennessee are searching for a woman who allegedly fired a gun through a Burger King’s drive-thru window. Fortunately, employees in the restaurant were reportedly able to escape through a rear doorway and no injuries were reported. The Memphis Police Department posted about the incident on Facebook, which occurred at a Burger King in Memphis on Tuesday, March 30th. According to the post, no arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing. Witnesses reportedly said that the woman was upset at how long she the wait at the drive-thru was. She allegedly exited her vehicle and approached the window, where she began arguing with one of the workers. The woman then reportedly returned to her vehicle (which she was not the driver of) and retrieved a handgun. Authorities say she returned to the drive-thru window, leaned inside the restaurant and fired the gun several times. The woman then returned to her car, which drove away from the scene. The Memphis police wrote on Facebook that employees at the restaurant fled through a rear door and were unharmed. window, and fire several shots at the Burger King The post continued, “The workers fled from the gunfire through the rear door of the business and were unharmed. The suspect was accompanied by a male who was the driver of the gray sedan.”

SOMERVILLE – A sixth person has been indicted and charged in connection to an August 2020 shooting in Fayette County that left one person dead and four others injured. The indictment was a result of an investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. At the request of 25th District Attorney General Mark Davidson, agents began investigating the shooting, which occurred at a party on August 23, 2020, in the 1100 block of Brewer Road. Tavaris Lewis (DOB: 10/4/2000) of Mason died at the scene from his injuries. Two men and two women were also injured. During the course of the investigation, agents and investigators developed information that identified Deandra Rivers (DOB: 9/6/95) as an individual responsible for attempting to dispose of evidence in the case. On March 22nd, the Fayette County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Rivers with one count of Tampering with Evidence. On March 28th, Rivers turned himself into the Fayette County Jail where he is jailed on $75,000 bond.

Prediabetes

Your Chance to Prevent Type 2 Diabetes What Is Prediabetes?

Prediabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Approximately 88 million American adults—more than 1 in 3—have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, more than 84% don’t know they have it. Prediabetes puts you at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

What Causes Prediabetes?

Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that acts like a key to let blood sugar into cells for use as energy. If you have prediabetes, the cells in your body don’t respond normally to insulin. Your pancreas makes more insulin to try to get cells to respond. Eventually your pancreas can’t keep up, and your blood sugar rises, setting the stage for prediabetes—and type 2 diabetes down the road. You can have prediabetes for years but have no clear symptoms, so it often goes undetected until serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes show up. It’s important to talk to your doctor about getting your blood sugar tested if you have any of the risk factors for prediabetes, which include:

Signs & Symptoms of Prediabetes

-Being overweight -Being 45 years or older -Having a parent, brother, or sister with type 2 diabetes -Being physically active less than 3 times a week -Ever having gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy) or giving birth to a baby who weighed more than 9 pounds -Having polycystic ovary syndrome Race and ethnicity are also a factor: African Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, American Indians, Pacific Islanders, and some Asian Americans are at higher risk.
