The Jackson, TN Chapter of the Links, Incorporated held its 2023 “New Candidates” Orientation informational session at the branch of the Jackson Madison County NAACP, under the direction of President Mechelle Moragne, Sunday evening.

Chapter members provided information about the National History of the organization and the local community service projects including our signature, Beautification Scholarship Banquet, community health fairs and our partnership with the Jackson Madison County Branch of the NAACP, to promote voter registration.

the Jackson Chapter of the Top Ladies Of Distinction, Inc. Dr. Dee encouraged everyone in the audience to make the best choices for their heart, whether that means incorporating healthier foods, making more time to exercise, or checking in regularly with a primary healthcare provider.

“You may have heart disease, but it doesn’t mean you’re doomed,” said the cardiologist, speaking to a capacity crowd inside the Kirkendoll Student Center on the campus of Lane College.

According to the American Heart Association, African-Americans disproportionately have higher rates of high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.

Everyone in the audience wore various shades of red in observance of February as American Heart Month. Dr. Dee engaged the audience and recited in a dynamic way what the following letters in “Go Red” stand for:

G – Get to know your numbers (cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.)

O – Own your lifestyle (Be active)

R – Raise your voice. Be a vigilant advocate of your own health.

E – Educate your family and friends about heart disease.

D – Donate towards heart health research.

She also dispelled some myths about heart disease. “The myth is it only affects men or older people.”

However, “this is one disease that doesn’t discriminate.” In fact, “cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of women,” according to the American Heart Association. One in three cardiovascular deaths occur in women. Too often, women may tend to disregard their symptoms or put off seeing a healthcare provider because they are so focused on being the caretaker for everyone else in the family.

Michelle Whatley is a heart disease survivor whose story was among the gripping testimonials shared during the program. She thought she was “too young” to have heart problems. Whatley was 37 when she had a heart attack. She recalled the symptoms she had that included chest and jaw pains. She drove herself to the hospital and barely made it. After flatlining three times at the hospital, she survived, and learned her condition could be treated with medication.

Another very memorable moment at the luncheon was when the Jackson Top Ladies of Distinction announced the Top Lady of the Year award. Founding Nurse Practitioner of the Agape Family Health Clinic Cynthia Early (r) was named the

Top Lady of the Year for her dedication and service as a healthcare provider.

Early, a certified nurse midwife, has delivered more than 1,500 babies in West Tennessee. She was recognized as the first African-American certified nurse midwife with privileges at a hospital in Jackson.

Members of the Top Ladies Of Distinction also have a big heart for mentoring youth. They celebrated the following Jackson Top Teens who will travel to Orlando, Fla. in March to compete at the national Top Teens of America conference: Madison Agomuo (TTA President), Shelby Bond (2 nd TTA Vice President), Kameron Myles, Nyla Myles, Donte Yarbrough, Donte McClain, Londyn Lumas Harmon (Miss Top Teen), Caleb McLemore (Mr. Top Teen), Alexandria Carney, and Elijah Reeves. Theresa Wilson is their TTA advisor.

In 2020, the annual luncheon was renamed in honor of the late Annie Ruth Rogers, who served as a devoted member of the Top Ladies of Distinction. Rogers passed away in 2018 at the age of 95. Tajuana Cheshier-Reed, granddaughter of the late Annie Ruth Rogers, fondly recalled her grandmother’s love for the Top Ladies of Distinction. “She never missed one of these luncheons.”

Wendy Isom Mercer, a freelance columnist/writer, works as the Southwest TN One Stop Operator at the American Job Center in Jackson. She previously worked at the STAR Center as a job placement specialist. Wendy, a former special education teacher, earned her master’s degree in teaching from the University of Memphis. Wendy also formerly worked as a features reporter at The Jackson Sun. She received her bachelor’s degree in print journalism from Clark Atlanta University. BLACK WORKERS ARE THE HARDEST HIT BY TECH LAYOFFS Pre-order my new book Decentering Whiteness in the Workplace!

A running list from layoffs.fyi reveals that over 100,000 employees have been laid off from tech companies since 2023 started. Techcrunch reports that several tech giants including Zoom, Pinterest, Paypal, Spotify, and Google’s parent company Alphabet have collectively laid off thousands of workers. During the Covid-19 pandemic, many tech companies went full force on hiring based on a change in consumer needs, which required accommodating a more remote workforce and increased e-commerce. The pandemic has now caused a period of economic instability, which has spurred mass layoffs.

A 2021 research study indicates that racial minorities and women are the most vulnerable in the U.S. labor market. To make matters worse, during times of economic instability, DEI programs are the first to get defunded. In 2022, HR departments and DEI teams were seeing some of the highest job cuts, according to the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). Halting DEI efforts may seem like the reasonable solution but leaders must recognize the longterm effects of this decision. Without the necessary push from HR departments and DEI teams, corporations don’t often put enough focus on hiring and retaining employees from underrepresented racial groups.

“What is the workplace culture going to be as people see a higher rate of Black and brown team members exit the workplace?” Workplace culture and leadership consultant Kim Crowder urges leaders to think about the implications of mass layoffs. “What are customers and audiences going to think?” With companies getting rid of their DEI budgets and DEI teams, racial diversity in tech will continue to suffer. When assessing the racial demographics in the tech sector, there are notable disparities. According to Zippia.com, in 2021 62% of U.S. tech jobs were held by white employees, while 20% were held by Asian Americans, 8% were held by Latine/Latinx American employees and only 7% were held by Black employees.

Failing to prioritize DEI could widen these racial gaps in tech. “Companies need to be proactive when it comes to their DEI efforts,” shared senior talent acquisition professional, Jessica Pharm. “Don’t let fears of a recession be an excuse for not moving forward on critical DEI initiatives. If anything, it’s more important to double down and make clear DEI is still very important...considering how many Black/POC employees have been impacted.” A 2020 Washington Post-Ipsos poll found that Black and Hispanic employees were more likely to be laid off compared to their white counterparts. Layoffs disproportionately impact Black workers and will only exacerbate the racial disparities that already exist within tech. A 2023 McKinsey report indicates that the Black tech talent gap is expected to widen in the next decade.

Black employees face considerable challenges in the labor market. Structural barriers have created more hurdles for Black job seekers, who face higher unemployment rates and fewer job opportunities among other systemic issues. For Black talent, the popular career advice of “fake it ‘til you make it” doesn’t work. Research indicates that Black employees that engage in self-promotion in the workplace are penalized for it. Black talent that wants to showcase their knowledge, skills, and abilities must develop more nuanced strategies to navigate these challenges. LinkedIn can be a useful tool for Black talent to find community and showcase their acquired knowledge and skills. In addition to tapping into different online jobseeker communities, honing and developing one’s skillset can be beneficial for tech talent.

Recruiter and career consultant Jermaine L. Murray works to help Black talent secure tech roles. For recently laid off tech talent, Murray emphasizes the importance of strengthening one’s skillset. “I’ve been telling Black people to find community in these circumstances while also investing in their personal brands by either repositioning their existing skillset into a new value proposition or learning new skills to become more competitive in niche industries.” The Plug suggests that Black tech workers navigating layoffs should remember their worth. Layoffs can be extremely taxing on a person’s wellbeing and confidence. It’s vital for Black talent to focus on what an asset they are and to not be deterred by mass layoffs. Black professionals can’t be afraid to showcase their talents online and be open to help from the community, while trying to remain optimistic. Although a minor or major setback, a layoff is not end of the journey and can provide individuals with the chance to open new doors and pursue different opportunities.

WHEN VISION BECOMES EXPECTATION

What a week in education this past week. I attended a School Board meeting for JMCSS and they had school board appreciation at this meeting. This was highlighted by principals and students preparing and principals presenting each of the members with a gift basket as a gesture of how much they are appreciated for what they do for students and education. The city of Jackson Mayor Scott Conger and Madison County Mayor A.J. Massey were on hand to present the board with a joint proclamation for the city and county’s appreciation for what they do.

The presentation of colors was by Liberty Tech’s Air Force JROTC. There was a performance by Northeast Middle Choir which was outstanding and received a standing ovation from the full house in attendance for this meeting. There were art displays from Isaac Lane elementary around the room. My favorite was the student that read from his essay from “Do the Write Thing,” and was one of the National Ambassadors and presented each of the school board members with a bound copy of the essays, which are also in the Library of Congress. It is my distinct pleasure to attend a school board meeting these days.

In my humble opinion, the newly elected school board members are making a smooth transition to lead the district forward. A continuation of their adopted motto: #BBAM (Best by any measure). Under the guidance of Superintendent Dr. Marlon King, when the school board talks about getting things done, the community, city, county, and business leaders are watching with expectation and taking opportunities to support and assist in raising the bar for education at JMCSS.

Pope school is moving forward and there was discussion about the Hub City Central Complex. What was once “Trust the Process,” not too long ago, has taken the vision and turned it into results with the prospect of fulfilled expectations, as the best is yet to come. However, this era of cooperation needs to continue in order to change the culture and perpetuate success! Around the District

There is a difference in the rural setting as opposed to the urban-like setting in Madison County. I attended a district basketball game at Gibson County HS with playoff ramifications and was impressed by the support of the students and parents of the home team as the girls’ game was no contest but the boys’ game was a one-point thriller. Unfortunately, the home team did not prevail, but even with a large crowd in attendance, everyone conducted themselves civilly as both teams displayed good sportsmanship after the game. Parents, your children are watching what you do and student athletes

keep in mind that your classmates not only support you but they look to emulate your behavior. As an educator, nothing pleases me more than to watch a student handle themselves with character and distinction. I take no credit, but I sure do like to see it on display outside the classroom.

As a sidebar note, there were two groups at the Jackson Madison County school board meeting that were displaying signs both for and against charter schools. Public schools have been developing engineers, doctors, teachers, lawyers, civic, state, and national leaders in business, industry, and in politics. I spoke with a retired school teacher that had taught in this area for 34 years and was making 46,000 annually when she retired. I don’t care what sector of professionalism you prescribe to, that is dedication. Teachers need some appreciation too.

It’s that time again to renew hunting and fishing license. Hunting licenses expire on February 28 and for the first time the new ones will last a full year from the date of purchase. They normally expire on the last day of February regardless of the purchase date. This meant if you didn’t buy it until December they would only last three months, but now they will last a full year.

Hunters have always thought that was the fair thing to do and they finally listened to citizens voice. Hunting and fishing license can be purchased at sporting stores, Wal-mart or even online @ TWRA.com.

For those who don’t wish to hunt they can purchase a fishing only license for a reduced price. Minors need to remember to sign up for hunter safety classes before applying for hunting license.

TWRA now has an auto renewal plan so you never have to worry about expiration. The sooner you get those new licenses the more time outdoorpersons can explore the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. Be sure to get the kids their license too.

LANE SOFTBALL SWEEPS OAKWOOD

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Lane College softball team hosted Oakwood University on Friday at the West Tennessee Sportsplex, sweeping the Ambassadors and moving to 5-1 on the season.

The Dragons’ defense and pitching staff played lights out, allowing just three hits over two games and giving up no earned runs.

Reigning Pitcher of the Week Jersey Cabana (2-1) picked up the win in game one, going 5.0 innings and allowing one hit while striking out 11 batters.

Sophomore Autumn Phillips (3-0) earned the victory in game two. The Harriman, Tenn. native pitched a complete game and struck out nine batters.

Millay Lambert, who was SIAC Player of the Week, reached base all six times she came to the plate.

Freshman Ava Mearideth was 2-for-2 in game one including a two RBI double in the 3rd inning while designated player Kaylee Stinnett was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A Memphis woman said she was stabbed twice by her son in the kitchen of her home Saturday morning.

The victim

was able to drive herself to St. Francis Hospital and was being treated in the Trauma Unit. Her son, Terrell Boyd, 24, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault.

The victim said Boyd came to her house Friday night to do his laundry and take a shower.

She said the following day, while making coffee, he came downstairs, grabbed a butcher knife from a kitchen drawer, and stabbed her twice on her left side.

The woman told police she believed her son had a mental breakdown and needed help. She said last summer, she saw him talking to himself.
