The Tina Turner Museum in Brownsville held a Twilight Memorial on Sunday, May 28th to honor the life and legacy of the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”
Tina Turner, the iconic entertainer who was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tenn. died at the age of 83 on May 24th.
“I’m so grateful that she influenced and is loved by so many people,” said Sonia Outlaw-Clark, Executive Director of the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center and the Tina Turner Museum. “What she means to me personally is friendship. I am now friends with people from all over the world. I would’ve never known these people if it hadn’t been for Tina Turner. She has connected me with the world.” The Tina Turner Museum live streamed the memorial on its Facebook page so that Turner’s international friends and fans could also be part of the event. Brownsville Mayor Bill Rawls, Jr. said Turner will always be remembered for her high-energy performances. “I get chill bumps when I think of her passion on the stage,” Rawls said.
Brownsville Vice Mayor Carolyn Flagg, a former Carver High School classmate of Tina Turner’s, performed a lively dance on stage to Turner’s song, “Nutbush City Limits” before sharing her remarks at the memorial. Flagg, 83, described Turner as an outstanding person and
“SIMPLY THE BEST”Bill Marable - Publisher/CEO
Loss is hard. It doesn’t discriminate; regardless of the circumstances, it never seems fair. Unfortunately, it comes to us all, and the amount of loss we experience depends on how long we live. I’ve experienced more than my share of loss, but over the years, it has taught me some things: Every loss sets the stage for a new beginning, and gratitude makes adjusting to the new beginning easier. Gratitude helps us through the grieving process and lays the foundation for healing.
I recently lost a 34-year-old cousin. She was a loving daughter, sister, niece, friend, and devoted mother to two beautiful children. Her death was quick and unexpected. It left family and friends in shock and folks in the community shaking their heads. Anytime we lose loved ones, we feel alone and isolated, like no one else can understand what we’re going through. It can cause us to withdraw and hold on to the pain by ourselves. It leaves many of us with feelings of disbelief, anger, guilt, and sadness, all swirling inside us simultaneously.
Loss sometimes makes us forget that we are all humanly connected social beings. Because we all need each other, sharing our pain brings comfort when we need it the most. While quiet time is necessary to process our thoughts and bring focus to what is essential, too much time alone is not healthy when it comes to coping with loss.
After learning to live gratefully, I think of what I have left each time I’ve lost anyone or anything. Does it minimize the loss? No. What it does is help me realize that despite everything, what I have left is more than enough to keep me moving forward. Here are a few other valuable small change blessons (lessons and blessings)

“SIMPLY THE BEST”
West Tennessee OUTDOORS with Ray Jones
West Tennessee Outdoors was rocking this Memorial Day weekend at the Exit 56 Blues Fest and it was the largest crowd ever thanks to Tina Turner.
Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614
People from all over the world converged on Brownsville to honor the legend who was simply the best and it was proved at the Delta Heritage Center. Cars, busses, motorcycles and trucks were parked as far away as highway 76.
The atmosphere was so festive with the smell of BBQ smoke all in the air and music to keep your attention.
The corvette car show is always a big draw as usual. You have heard that you don’t know what you got until you lose it has never been truer.
Everyone knew how big Tina was but with many radio stations playing tribute for days shows just how big she truly was. Tina was the focal point of the Blues Festival and rightfully so with her being not only one of the most famous stars from West Tennessee but from the world.
Simply put Tina Turner was “Simply The Best” SCENES FROM THE EXIT 56 BLUES FESTIVAL.

It is a crime to be unhealthy financially. I want us not to WASTE a very expensive resource we all need. That would be fuels for vehicles. By vehicles we mean cars, pick-up trucks, not commercial but personal. By fuels we discuss diesel, gasoline, electricity.
According to Car and Driver Magazine there are fewer improved diesel motors in vehicles of non-commercial nature in the United States but currently many are an option. There are some Chevrolets, Ford or Ram Trucks, Jeeps, Land Rovers, and even one Mazda. In European countries over half of the vehicles for personal use are diesel motors. The Motley Fool (financial advice) conducted a study that found diesel engines were 29 percent more efficient on the highway and 24 percent more efficient in the city than gasoline engines. Diesel motors probably cost more up front and the fuel of diesel is many cents higher than gasoline unless you drive a vehicle that requires premium gasoline. Efficiency of diesel over gasoline would probably only be noticed after many miles of driving on highways.
Electricity for fuel in cars is being “pushed” by our government and a few are purchasing hybrid, electric, crossover, etc. A former student of mine is Head of Nursing in Memphis and drives there daily from Jackson. She loves her new Mustang Mach-E which is a 2021 Ford’s first all-electric crossover. She has always loved a Mustang and I agree the car looks very appealing. She had an electrician install a charging station in her garage. The car charges every evening. When she drives to Memphis and returns, she has 80 miles of “fuel” or “power” left. Her payments are higher, but only half as much as she was spending on gasoline. She used tax credits and incentives. I tell her to save up for big expenses later – could be very expensive battery and tire replacements. I am one of those people who question the ability of the United States grid to supply the increased need for electricity if we all save fossil fuels (gasoline, diesel, propane, etc.) by driving electric vehicles.
We cannot leave a discussion of conservation with-
out discussing habits that cause waste. If you drive a gasoline powered car or truck, the first choice is NOT to choose a premium only fuel vehicle. In other words, make conservative choices in the beginning. A lot of the other conservation measures are habits. The U. S. Department of Energy states fuel conservation depends heavily on how we drive. Driving to save of fuel use would be:
Slow – Every 5 mph driven over 50 mph adds $.20 to each gallon of gas being used. Reducing speed by 5 to 10 mph increasing fuel efficiency by 7%-14%. Slowing down by 10% uses 27% less power from the engine. However it is said, slower uses less!!
Cruise Control – Use one or drive like one! Best if accelerating and braking is done gently and gradually, speed limit is obeyed, and read the road ahead as many sensors on vehicles do today. Removing foot pressure from accelerator uses 0 fuel but flooring it uses MAX amount of fuel.
Maintenance – Clean air filters, fresh and good quality oils, proper pounds of pressure and proper alignment of tires makes driving easier on the engine. Under inflated is the worse use of fuel. Load – Offload any unnecessary items to reduce the fuel consumption of your vehicle. A rooftop cargo carrier could increase your fuel use as much as 25% if you travel 65-75 mph because of the drag increase. Open windows can lower fuel consumption by about 10% because of a “drag”. When the tailgate on a pickup is raised a bubble of air is created in the bed and reduces drag at highway speeds.
Price – Shop around for the lowest prices of fuel. Take into consideration any membership fees or miles you must drive to visit them. There are BIG differences in prices today!
Air Conditioner – Run the AC only when the outside air is too hot. Park in the shade to save stress on the engine as it cools. Set temperature of AC warmer than too cold. The air conditioner is one of the heaviest pulls on engine and fuel.
Timing – Always encourage carpooling and trips when the least congestion of traffic causes idling of engine because the worst mileage a vehicle can get is 0 mpg (during idling). Stopping the engine rather than idling for a long time is smart. Restarting an engine uses about the same amount of gas as idling for 30 seconds.
How can we conserve (lower) the amount of gasoline and diesel we use in vehicles for our transportation? Maybe buy an electric car?? Maybe change our habits with the vehicles we have now? Remember to Waste Not, Want Not during 2023. Changes in habits are the key behaviors to being conservative.

Veteran comedian, actor and radio personality J. Anthony Brown brought his standup talents to the Hub City tonight and left the audience in stitches.
Appearing at The Ned downtown, Brown headlined Big Mikes Comedy Blast which included the show’s emcee Kevin White, Troy Davis and Ambur James.
Brown joined The Steve Harvey Morning Show as a daily contributor in April 2017 after spending two decades with The Tom Joyner Morning Show.
White, a Louisville, Kentucky native, had the crowd of three to four hundred laughing from the
start of the show. Davis’ style of family humor did not disappoint the audience. He has opened for D. L. Hughley, Billy Gardell and Dave Chappell. James, who joked about being a grandmother at age 45, has worked with comedians such as Michael Colyer, Earthquake, Melanie Comarcho and many more.
Michael Martin is the show’s producer.

I’ve learned from the special people in my life who transitioned over the last two years:
A few weeks before my young cousin’s death, I lost a 91-year-old aunt. She moved away when I was a teen, so I never spent much time with her. But what I do clearly remember about her is her vibrant, prim and proper, sophisticated personality that stood out each time I saw her, even after dementia sneaked and began chipping away at her memory.
At the age of 90, she flew home with one of her sons to our family reunion, and I was surprised to see that even though she couldn’t remember names, she was as high-spirited and proper as ever. When she died, I learned that she had planned her funeral. When I looked at pictures of her services online and for the first time laid eyes on a 3-wheel Harley-Davidson motorcycle drawn glass encased hearse carrying her coffin to her final resting place, I thought, “WOW, this is true to the aunt that I knew.” Her last journey was memorable, one that stood out. As one of her granddaughters described, “She went out jazzy just like the individual she was!” So what did she leave me? The reminder to be true to myself and hope that I will be as bold and vibrant as she was right up to the end!
In January 2023, I lost a one-of-a-kind 84-year-old cousin. Her death shocked everyone who knew her. She
had not been sick and had just celebrated her 84th birthday with her daughter and shared with me how much she enjoyed it.
Everyone who knew her knew that she was the epitome of love. A couple of years back, I wrote her “thank you” letter, expressing my appreciation for all the love she had shown me and my younger siblings as children. And she didn’t just do it for us; she did it for several other families.
So when she transitioned, I was grateful I had written her that letter. I was thankful that her genuine love had made a difference in my life. Grateful for the laughter and family history she would share when we talked on the phone or at family gatherings. I was grateful she left a beautiful daughter to share her memories with. And thankful that I can now add her to my list of guardian angels.
In November 2021, I lost a special 89-year-old aunt who taught me the meaning of living in moderation. She never sat me down and said “Myrtle, let me teach you about moderation.” Instead, she demonstrated it in the way she lived her life. She cooked in moderation. From early childhood, I was in and out of her house, sometimes invited, other times just dropping by. And on the drop-in occasions when she was cooking dinner, I would look at the small pots and pans on her stove and wonder how they ever held enough to feed her family, not to mention a few extras. But there was always plenty.
With no formal training, she knew the health benefits of preparing balanced meals and keeping life as simple as possible. She ate in moderation. I never saw her pile too much food on her plate. I never heard her talk about diets and what she couldn’t eat. She ate and drank what she wanted and maintained a healthy weight all her life. She was a neat dresser and always wore well-fitting clothes that looked good on her. When it came to styles,
comfort was more important. She wore good-fitting, comfortable shoes. She would say it was nothing worse than looking cute with your feet hurting.
Her moderate-sized home was clean and well-organized, and she didn’t tolerate a lot of chaos in it. I never heard her compare her home to others or show any interest in keeping up with the Joneses. Instead, she seemed content with what she had, as if she knew when enough was enough.
When she made the transition, she left me her daughters and grandchildren to share her fond memories. She left a couple of her delicious recipes that I make from time to time. And most importantly, the perfect example of living in moderation. That is enough.
Whether you lose a loved one, a relationship, a job, a cherished pet or experience material loss, it demands change, and change is hard. But remember, you don’t have to go it alone. Remember that spending just a few minutes each day focusing on the good that person, place or thing brought to your life helps you grieve in a healthy way. And one day at a time, you come to appreciate what you have left is enough to keep you moving forward one day at a time.
small change Tip: The next time you experience loss, take a few minutes of quiet, uninterrupted time, grab a sheet of paper, and at the top of the page, write the name of the person, place, or thing you lost. Then list everything good that they brought to your life; don’t leave anything out. Then go through the list and place a checkmark beside the things you have left. You might be surprised to learn that what you think you lost really isn’t lost at all; it merely changed forms. Gratitude teaches us that “goodbyes” are only for those who love with the eyes. When you love with the heart, there is no separation.

TINA TURNER - Cont’d from page 1 friend. She called the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ by her birth name, Anna Mae. In addition to being an entertainer in school, Flagg said Tina Turner tried out and made the high school basketball team. Tina Turner attended Carver High School from 1954 to 1956 before she moved to St. Louis with her family.
Robbie Jarrett Ewing, 83, shared that she and Tina Turner used to play “footsies” as little girls sitting in Woodlawn Missionary Baptist Church. Ewing said that her grandmother and Tina Turner’s grandmother were
second cousins. Ewing and Turner also attended Carver High School, where she and Tina joined the Glee Club. Ewing said one of their most memorable experiences as high school students occurred one summer when “the music teacher took us to Lane College for a symposium and we won first place and received the trophy there.”
Ripley Mayor Craig Fitzhugh told the crowd about his unique connection to Tina Turner. When he was a child, Fitzhugh said that Tina Turner was his babysitter. As an adult, he attended one of her concerts and had the chance to go backstage. After not seeing him since he was a
child, he said Tina Turner recognized him and hugged him when he met with her backstage. Tina Turner was also known for her remarkable courage and resilience when she faced personal and health challenges in her life. Also in attendance at the memorial were Joe and Pam Stephens, donors of the Flagg Grove School that is now known as “the world’s only Tina Turner Museum.” Joe Stephens said he never had the chance to personally meet Tina Turner, but his father told him stories about Tina Turner when she was a student at Flagg Grove School. One of the stories his father always shared was how she was “always running around singing.” Back then, they also locked the door if students were late to school. When Tina Turner was late to school, Joe Stephens’ father said she would climb through the window to get inside the school. Joe Stephens’ wife, Pam, treasures that time she got to meet Tina Turner in New York. When they met, Tina Turner said to Pam Stephens, “You’re part of my heritage.” Although Tina Turner lived her latter life in Switzerland, she never forgot her deep roots in West Tennessee.
I did not have the chance to see Tina Turner in-person. However, my late mother had the opportunity to see Tina Turner perform in concert. In 2020, I chose to visit the Tina Turner Museum for the first time on my birthday, and I wore the Tina Turner concert shirt that belonged to my mother. In the words of another one of Turner’s popular songs, that whole experience that day was “simply the best.”
I encourage anyone who has not yet toured the Tina Turner Museum in Brownsville to go visit and learn more about Tina Turner’s legacy. Although many people know the popular lyrics to Tina Turner’s songs, she also shared so many great words to live by. Visit the website www. westtnheritage.com or call the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center/Tina Turner Museum at 731-779-9000 for more information about taking a tour.
