She was the second child and oldest daugh ter of the late Anna Thomas. and the late Cleveland Smith. Early in her life, she accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior. Dorothy and her family joined Saint James Missionary Baptist Church and she remained a faithful member until her death. She attended Stigall Elementary, Junior and Highs schools in Humboldt. She was a member of the Class of 1968.

Matthew 24:12 (King James) says; “And because iniquity shall many abound, the lov e of many shall wax cold. Many have turned to hatred, wicked ways, living on & to the worldly side. We, ourselves should, and want to have a strong desire to return back to our first love; Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Revelation 2:4 says; “Nevertheless I have some what against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Both scriptures, Matthew 24:12 & Revelation 2:4 are the words of Jesus Christ saying. Even though these are perilous times and also closer to the ending times. Everyday we are getting closer & closer. We must depend on our Heavenly Father, God Almighty to make it through these times. He is our protector, provider, and strength in times like these. In times like these we’re going to need a Savior, the Savior to help us through. We as Christians, Disciples of Christ, Children of the King, God’s children, Holy Rollers, Saved Folks, Got Good Religion, Sanctified, Holy Ghost/Holy Spirit filled and sealed, must return back to our first love. We must have love for each other and for one another. Willing to help others, and those along the way. Encourage, uplift and inspire others from day to day. Always be willing and wanting to let our light so shine and shine bright (Matthew 5:16) before others to see. As we live the life, according to the word of God (Holy Bible), letting our light shine, we are glorifying the Father. God, our Heavenly Father. Before Jesus left, he gave the last commandment in John 13:34 Jesus said “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I loved you, that ye also love one another”. John 15: 9 Jesus is speaking; “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you, continue ye in my love”. We must continue in our Savior’s love. From our Heavenly Father through our Blessed Savior with the power of the Holy Ghost. We, Christians and the world must return back to our first love. Amen.

With the recent closures of corporate retailers like Walgreens and Walmart in East Oakland last year, many residents were left with limited options to access fresh produce. Thankfully, our mom-and-pop neighborhood grocers stepped up to provide much-needed services and jobs.I’ve talked to many small business owners across our city, and they want what all Oaklanders want — more public safety resources to prevent break-ins and robber ies, and safe, clean streets to create a healthy environment for both customers and employees.
I’ve championed small businesses since my first day at City Hall, and as Mayor, my commitment will not change. I believe our post-pandemic recovery plan must prioritize investments in small businesses to create local jobs and grow our tax base to fund critical City services.
In accordance with the Constitution and Bylaws of the NAACP, the Jackson Madison County Branch NAACP will start the process of electing Offi cers and Executive Committee Members At Large to serve for 2023-24 during its virtual General Membership Meetings. On September 20th at 6pm, there will be an election of the Nominating Committee. On Oct 18th at 6pm, there will be the reporting of the Nominating Committee, nominations from and the election of the Election Supervisory Committee. On Novem ber 15th, the branch will conduct the election electronically by mandate of the NAACP National Office. Eligible members desiring to vote must pro vide an email address and/or smartphone number to the Branch Secretary by Oct. 16, 2022. According to court reports, in December, Jones sent unsolicited pictures and messages to a 15-year-old student through Snapchat, an app that allows users to send pictures that are only available for a certain amount of time.According to information presented in court, Jones sent two separate images to the child, one being a nude photo that showed her breast, and the other was a video of her nude in the bathtub.
According to court documents, around 7:50 p.m. on Sunday, September 4, Clark was with her child in the parking lot of Royal Arms Apartments when her boy friend attempted to punch her.
The release states Judge Clayburn Peeples request ed a Senior Judge from the Court of Judiciary preside over the trial, due to a sep arate murder trial taking place at the same time in Haywood County.
Bryer, who is facing up to 25 years in prison for the conviction, will be sentenced by Senior Judge Don Ash on November 14, 2022.

Bryer was indicted for the murder nearly five years later on January 4, 2017.
An incident report states that Clark then attempted to leave the parking lot with her son but lost control of her vehicle.
According to the report, Clark struck a parked vehicle, which caused it to move and strike an eight-year-old girl who later complained of her left leg hurting.
Clark was arrested and transported to the Criminal Justice Complex. Records indicate she has since been released from custody on bond.

A news release states that on Friday, September 9, 2022, a Gibson Coun ty Jury found Benjamin “Ben” Bryer guilty of second degree murder. The charge stems from the strangulation killing of 49-year-old James Patrick Calene at a residence on Jim Jackson Road in Hum boldt on March 30, 2012.
19-year-old Amyah Clark is being charged with child endangerment and reckless endangerment.
Clark continued through the parking lot without her son, until she collided with a tree located near the exit. At this time, officers arrived on scene and made contact with Clark, who claimed she did not realize her son had fell out of the vehicle until the incident was over.
The report states that Clark continued towards the exit of the parking lot, and her son fell out of the vehicle due to not being restrained in the car seat.

September 8, 2022 NASHVILLE, TN — Fisk University, one of the nation’s elite private historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU), has experienced a remarkable enrollment increase over the past four years. In 2017, the total stu dent body was 630 students and this fall, Fisk exceed ed 1,050 students with an incoming class of just under 400 students. These students arrive from 33 states and five countries to join the Fisk fam ily and to become part of the next generation of executive leaders across every sector of society. Many are first genera tion students, whose trajecto ry will define families and communities across the country. In an increasingly minority/ majority world, this is the future, and the future looks bright.

ANTHONY “TONY” M. GROOMS is a writer and arts administrator who is well known in the Atlanta area for his work in organizing arts events and for his support and encouragement of other writers.

Born January 15, 1955, Grooms was raised and educated in rural Louisa County, Virginia, 120 miles south of Wash ington, D.C. The eldest of six children, he grew up among an extended African American family that also claimed Native American and European heritage. His parents—Robert E. Grooms, a refrigera tion mechanic, and Dellaphine Scott, a textile worker and housewife—encouraged his education. In 1967, as a preface to the forced racial integration of Virginia’s public school system, his parents enrolled him in the Freedom of Choice plan that brought about limited integration of the white public schools. Though he notes that many of his attitudes about race and class in the United States were formed before 1967, the school integration expe rience was, nonetheless, a landmark event in his life, contributing to a perspective that is evident in many of his writings.Grooms graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, in 1978 with a B.A. de gree in theatre and speech. His focus was playwriting, and student theater groups produced several of his plays. Later he studied at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virgin ia, where he developed a professional interest in creative writing and graduated in 1984 with an M.F.A. degree in English. After graduate school, he married Pamela B. Jackson, an administrative judge, and moved to Atlanta in 1988 to teach, where he found a subject for his writings in the American civil rights movement of the 1960s. In 1994 Grooms cofounded the Georgia Writers Association with writer Geri Taran and literary agent Susan L. Graham. He is currently a professor of creative writing at Kennesaw StateGroomsUniversity.istheauthor of a collection of poetry, Ice Poems (1988); a collection of stories, Trouble No More (1995), which won the Lillian Smith Book Award in 1996; and two novels, Bombingham (2001), which won the Lillian Smith Book Award in 2002, and The Vain Conversation (2018). (The Lillian Smith Book Award is named for Georgia writer Lillian Smith and administered by the Southern Regional Council.) His stories and poems have appeared in a number of literary journals and anthol ogies, including Callaloo, Crab Orchard Review, George Washington Review, and Short Stories of the Civil Rights Movement. He is the recipient of the Sokolov Scholarship from the Breadloaf Writing Conference, the Lamar lec tureship from Wesleyan College, an Arts Administration Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and a Fulbright Scholarship.
Anthony Grooms began his enviable career with the marvelous novel, BOMBINGHAM, that informed the reader that often some of the truest history of Americans is told in the stories of those who live at the periph ery of the big historical goings-on. Now, with his new novel, THE VAIN CONVERSATION, Grooms continues with that special way of seeing human history with the journey of Lonnie Henson, a white boy in rural Bethany, Georgia, at the end of World War II. We ask many things of the writers we have taken to our hearts – hon esty, sincerity, sensitivity, “old verities,” to borrow Faulkner’s phrase. I suspect that those are things Grooms did not have to learn because they were already in his blood before he wrote his first words.

Our Lasier Hill Academy alumnus Miss Sarah Chan @miss_sarahchan who is the Scout Manager of Toronto Raptors (2019 NBA CHAMPIONS) paid us a courtesy call and shone some light on staying focused on academics and co-curricular activities.
Chan, a two-time NAIA All-American, won two NAIA National Cham pionships with the Lady Bulldogs and was voted the 2010 Tournament MVP.

Chan, a South Sudanese native grew up in Kenya at a theological seminary. She started playing basketball there. In primary school, her athleticism didn’t go unnoticed. She would eventually enroll at Union University at Tennessee where she majored in History and minored in Political Science. Her Masters degree was at the United States International University (USIU) where she would play a critical role in the basketball team. She studied International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, fueled by the war her country had gone through, she sought to understand what possible solutions she could offer. Chan played in Europe for over a year for various clubs, being relentless and passionate about the sport.
