Caduceus The caduceus carried by Hermes in Greek mythology is a short staff entwined by two serpents surmounted by wings. In Roman iconography, it was often carried by Mercury, the messenger of the gods, guide of the dead and protector of merchants, shepherds, gamblers, liars, and thieves. The modern use of the caduceus as a symbol of medicine became established in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century as a result of documented mistakes, misunderstandings and confusion. The rod of Asclepius has a more ancient and authentic claim to be a medical emblem.

Asclepius The Rod of Asclepius (also spelled Asklepios or Aesculapius and also known as The Staff of Asclepius or The Asklepian) is a serpent-entwined rod wielded by the Greek god Asclepius, a deity associated with healing and medicine and son of Apollo. The symbol is used in modern times and is associated with medicine and health care.
