My main theme is relationship but within this theme I am going to explore the idea of the relationships between people and sports that they are associated with. I want to explore this theme as I think it is going to be interesting to see the motions and still-movements that DIVORCE DEDOMICILE can be created when taking the photographs of the people when they are GO AWAY ANTAGONISM doing their chosen sports. I intend to carry out research on my theme so that I am able to devel- DIFFERENCE GO DIFFERENT op my ideas and get inspiration from artists. I intend to do research like artist research, look on Pinterest at several artist and make mood DISASSOCIATION WAYS boards on those artists. DISCONNECTION GO SEPARATE I will do several photo shoots throughout the time that I explore the DISSIMILARITY WAYS theme of relationships between people and sports. These photo shoots that I carry out, I will also re-shoot some of them so that I am able DISUNION PULL OUT to get a more developed and defined theme. I will also do a photo shoot ALIENATE DIVISION that interprets my artist as I will gain inspiration from the artist that I decide to research. I will also do several other photo shoot SPLIT UP IMBALANCE that explore different themes with in relationships so that I am able TAKE LEAVE OPPOSITION to decided what works the best and thing that may not work with the theme that I am doing. UNLINK SEPARATION In this project, I intend to research several artists like: Ed Rushca UNTIE THE and Julia Margret Cameron. I will also like to visit the Saatchi gal- UNLIKENESS lery to be able to gain more ideas and a wider acknowledgement for the BREAK UP KNOT artwork that is happening in our day. It will also help me to be able STANGERS DIVORCE to give me more ideas on my theme. With the photograph that I take in this project, I will want to carry ESTRANGE UNCOUPLE out several edits on these photos. These could manual or digital edits. SEPURATE To digitally edit the photographs, I will be using Photoshop and cam- LEAVE era raw to be able to edit the photos and put certain effects on them. BIFURCATE INCOMPATIBILPhotoshop will be able to provide effects like Harrison Shutter Effect, ITY combining several photos and many more. By using Camera Raw, I will be DEPART able to enhance the clarity of photos and the colours. I will also be DISCONTINUE GIVE UP able to do several manual edits to my photographs, live cutting them up THROW AWAY and re-arranging them, splicing the photos, adding stitch to the pho- DISUNIFY to and other three dimensional objects, burning parts of the photo and DISUNITE UNLOVED drawing on top of the photos. When taking the photographs, I will also ABANDONED DIVERGE be able to use several camera settings to be able to change the look of the photo. These settings could include: shutter speed, the use of DROP ALONE zoom, sports mode, macro, and manually focusing the camera. UNWANTED PART When doing this project, I hope to learn more about how there can be a very wide span of relationships but i will be able to learn how to UNCOUPLE SPACE narrow all the ideas downs so that I am able to refine and develop one BREAK IT OFF idea. I also hope to learn how to make a successful website and an Emag. I also hope to learn new techniques that I will be able to use on BREAK OFF my photographs. I see my final piece being something that is three dimensional and has several different photographs on the three dimensional piece. With the photographs that will be used on the final piece, I can see them having several digital techniques as well as manual ones. This is because I would like my final piece to be something that the observer will be able to see from several different angles and have many things on the piece that will be visually intriguing, therefore the viewers will be drawn in.
Contact Sheet, Photo Shoot Plan and Evaluation:
Planning a photo shoot: The main aim of this photo shoot is to gather lots of photographs that are based around any type of theme to do with relationships. This is because I want to get as many ideas as I possibly can, so that I can get a wider understanding of my theme of relationships. This photo shoot will mainly be done in an outdoor environment. This is because I want to be able to see what is in our natural environment that could relate to my theme. Also by seeing what is outdoors it may be able to broaden my ideas of a relationship. The photographs will be of still life, urban and rural and landscapes. This is because I believe that there can be relationships between different still life objects, the difference between urban and rural and there can be a relationship between the ways that in a landscape, the skyline meets the horizon. The lighting in the photographs will be a natural lighting due to the fact that the photographs will be taken outdoors. The backdrop in the photographs will be a natural environment as this is what I want to be taking in the photographs. There will be a mixture of camera angles in this photo shoot. These will include: looking down, eye level and looking up. I will include several different camera angles, as this is what will make the photos look interesting and different to one another. For this photo shoot I will not need any props. The IOS, shutter speeds and f settings that I used: For this photo shoot, I used a wide range of IOS speeds, these include: 100, 400, 450, 560, 640, 1000, 2200, and 2800. I also used a range of shutter speeds, these are: 1/60, 1/80, 1/20, 1/100, 1/25, 1/500, and 1/200. In this photo shoot I also used a range of F numbers, these are: 4.0, 8.0, 4.5, 3.5, 9.0, 5.0, 13.0, 10.0, 7.1, 6.3, 4.8, 5.6, and 11.0 Evaluation: The aim of this photo shoot was to gather several different photographs that all linked in their own way to the theme of relationships. When taking some of the photographs in London, for a urban setting, it was difficult to stop and taken photographs due to the mass of people that were walking around. With these photographs, I have not manipulated them in any way. On the other hand, I have chosen some of my best photographs and made them into a mind map so that I am able to get ideas from it. I think that the photographs of the woodland areas best capture my theme as it is showing the relationship between man made and natural and also the relationship between old and new. If I was to reshoot this photo shoot, I would take more photographs including the relationship between people and also the relationship that people can have with certain objects.

Francesca Woodman Francesca Woodman is an American photographer and she is well known for her black and white photographs. Francesca was born on April 3rd 1958 in Boulder, which is in Colorado. Her mother and father were also artists and her brother went on to become a teacher in electronic art. On the other hand, Francesca went to a school in Boulder but when it came to her secondary school education, Francesca went to a school in Italy in 1973 called the private Massachusetts boarding school: Abbot Academy. At this school Francesca found out that she was interested in art and was able to develop her skills in photography. Due to Francesca’s family living in Italy, it meant that she was able to speak fluent Italian and so she was able to assist artists and Italian people who had highly developed intellect. This benefited her, as she was able to attend the Rhodes Island School of Design in 1975. This school was in Rome and she studied between the years of 1977 and 1978 on an honours program and then graduated in 1978. After graduating, Francesca moved to New York to be able to start her career in photography but unfortunately, none of Francesca’s portfolios attracted any big fashion photographers. Due to this and several other upsetting things, Francesca became depressed and later died on the 19th of January 1981. In these four photographs, I feel as if the relation ship is between the model and the photographer as the model is almost scared to be showing her face to the camera and so she is always trying to hide it by the use of the reflections. I think the Francesca is trying to communicate the way that a shy person may feel and want to look when people are watching/talking about them. The mood/atmosphere that is shown though the photographs, it a tense setting. This is because I think that the model is almost trying to get objects that will distracted us (the viewers) from who and what we are really looking at. I think that the emotions that are conveyed in these photographs is a sense of fear and being scared. This is because I believe that the models that are in the photographs want to hide their true identity from the world and other people. I believe that these four photographs, are trying to explore the thought of shape and texture. I am believed to think this as the model is soften sanding in a woddland setting. The trees and leaves are able to create a lot of texture with in the photo as it gives the photo a rough and ragged look. The model is also wearing a long a floaty dress that can give a soft texture to the photo and this contrast with the rough texture that the trees are able to give to the photo. I also chose to research Francesca Woodman as I really like the way that relationship in the photographs are to do with the refection and the person in the photo but also the relationship of what we are seeing. I like this, as in the two photographs that have the reflection of the natural world; it makes us make connections between humans and nature that is around us in everyday life. It almost makes me think that the person in the photo is trying to show us what humans are doing to the environment and how humans can be damaging to nature. With the two other photographs, that are showing a different reflection of the person in the photo, there is a relationship between what we can see of her but she may not be able to see for herself without the reflection. The relationship is between the human and what she could never see of herself in person unless see has the refection. I find this interesting as it is almost showing the person in the photo, parts of herself that she would not never be able to see in through her own eyes and so she is able to see the relationship between her own body.
Julia Margret Cameron Julia Margret Cameron, was born on the 11th of June 1879 and was a British photographer. Cameron was originally born in India due to her fathers job as a British official of the East Indian Company. In 1838, Cameron came back to India, after studying in France, to marry Charles Hay Cameron who was a member of the Law commission that was in Calcutta. After many years in India, Julia and Charles moved to London where her two sisters had been living for many years. After living in London for a while, in 1860, the couple moved to the isle of Wight due to the fact that when Julia visited to look at a Artists house, she fell for the area. At the age of 48, Cameron got her first camera as a gift from her daughter. This meant that Cameron took up the art of photography at a fairly late age and so it meant that her photographic career was relatively short. When starting out her career, she became a member of the Photographic Societies of London and Scotland. In her career, Julia would often take photographs of portraits “fancy portraits”. The meaning of a any portrait was that the normal photo of a portrait but the description of the person in the photo is taken out of the artist mind instead of the persons real-life appearance. This type of photography was taught to her by David Wilkie Wynfeild, who was a painter and a photographer. In the era when Julia was in a photography career, it was considered a job that was hard work and all to do with the timing of when the photos were taken. The people that were in Julia’s photographs, would often have to sit in the same position for a very long time due to the amount of times that Julia would take a photo so that she could make sure that everything was exactly how she wanted. In Julia’s portrait photographs, she would often have famous Victorian people in them due to the fact that her sisters shop would often attract famous people in to them and so the enabled her to become closer to the famous people allowing her to be able to use them in her photography. In the portraits that she has taken, Julia has focused her attention on the portraits face and so there faces are often the part of the photo that is mostly in focus and the rest slowly fades in to a more soft-focus affect. Due to Julia becoming closer with the famous people that she photographed, she wanted to be able to take a photo that would portray the person and their personality. In her day, her photographs were not widely expected buy now-a-days it has been able to inspire many artists and pho-
tographers.
“I longed to arrest all the beauty that came before me and at length the longing has been satisfied.”
In this photograph, I think the photographer is trying to communicate the way that a child looks like when they are in deep thought, or something ha not gone their way. I think this as the look of the child in the photograph is very plain faced and is showing an almost emotionless expression on her face. In the photograph I think that the moos that is being conveyed is slightly melancholy and annoyed, due to the girl is not smiling, has her arms crossed and seems like she is almost looking past you in the photograph and so therefore doesn’t seem like she wants to give the viewer any type of eye-contact. The atmosphere that this photo creates is quite intense as the girl seems to be in a fairly annoyed mood and so it feels as if she may get angrier if we were to look at her and give her some type of attention. I think that this photograph, is exploring the idea of society and socio-status as the girl seams to me to be poor and not cared for as she has messy hair and isn’t wearing any type of flamboyant clothing. I think that it explores society as the girl must be relate to some-one like parents and so it makes me think of what her family are like and what it is like to be like them in there community. I also think that the composition of this photograph plays an important role in what it is trying to show. This is because, the way that some parts of the girl has been cut off due to the way the she is the biggest thing in the photo, it is made to look like she is very alone and has no one else around her. The girl has become the subject matter of the photo as she has been place right in the centre foreground in the photo and so all the attention is on her as the background has become blurred so this will also make the girl look like the most important feature within the photograph. I think that the lighting in the photo is very natural and is coming from behind the photographer so that the face of the model is a lighter aspect of the photograph. I don’t think that the lighting really affects the photograph in any particular way as it is all very natural and even looking. The depth of field, is both focused and nu-focused as the girl in the foreground (which is close to the camera) is in focus, where as the background which is further away is unfocused and blurry. This then makes the girl seem a lot further forward within the photo. The parts of the photo that are in focus, are still slightly blurry but this is due to the camera that took the photo as it was in the Victorian times and so therefore the camera would have been basic and not as technical as now-a-days. In the frame of the photo, the girls facial features are all in the frame but the top of her head a main body have been excluded from the frame. This makes the eyes, nose, mouth and arms from the girl, seem to be the most important features in the photograph as they are the most interesting parts and are the parts that are mostly included in the frame. The colouring of the photograph is a sepia tone. This brown and cream tints to the photo make it look aged and vintage therefore giving it a valuable and worn photo. I think that the lines in this photograph are mainly horizontal as the way that the arms are crossed over and travelling in a horizontal direction. Due to the colouring of the photograph, I think that it helps to promote the mood of melancholy, as the colours are very subtle and the whites almost make the photo look cold and almost sad.
Contact Sheet, Photo Shoot Plan and Evaluation:
PLANNING A PHOTO SHOOT: The main aim of this photo shoot is to take photographs that link to my artist Julia Margret Cameron, but with my own twist on them. Cameron’s photographs are very old fashioned and so my twist is to modernize them in certain aspects. This photo shoot will be one in an outdoor environment. This is because in Cameron’s photographs, she has done all of hers outdoors and so I will be doing the same so that my photos link to hers. In my photographs, I will be using two children who are brother and sister. I have chosen to use two children as in Cameron’s work; she often uses children, as she liked the emotion that she was able to capture from them. I will be using a natural source of lighting (sunlight) in this photo shoot, as I will be doing it outside. Due to the sunlight, I will not need to use any artificial lighting, as the sun is bright enough. The backdrop, which will be in the photographs, will be the natural environment. This is mainly because when Cameron took her photographs, there was no such thing as a studio, where the background can be plain white or black. In the photo shoot, I will use a variety of camera angles like: looking up, eye level and looking down. This is because I will then be able to get a wide range of photographs and I will be able to see what works and what could be improved. The focal point in the photograph will mainly be either the foreground or mid-ground as this is where the most important parts of the photograph will be. The props that I will need to use in this photo shoot are: an umbrella and some fake flowers. THE IOS, SHUTTER SPEEDS AND F SETTING I USED: I used a wide range of IOS speeds in the photographs, these include: 110,100 and 400. I also use a range of shutter speeds so that I was able to get different effects on the photographs without editing them. These shutter speeds could be: 1/60, 1/125, 1/200, 1/800, 1/1250 and 1/320. The props that I used in this photo shoot were: an umbrella and some fake flowers. The F numbers that I used in the photo shoot were: 5.6, 6.3, 3.8, 7.1, 11.0, 8.0, and 3.5 EVALUATION: The main aim of this photo shoot was to take photos that were based on the work of Julia Margret Cameron, but modernize them in my own way. When using the flowers in this photo shoot it was sometimes difficult to place them and keep them there due to the breeze. I have digitally manipulated a few of these photographs by using Photoshop. This is because I wanted to edit the photos so that I was able to make certain aspects a lot more modern and so therefore creating my own twist on the photographs. The photos that best capture the aim of my photo shoot are the ones that I have digitally edited. This is because they combine both the old parts taken from Cameron’s work and also the way that in our day and age, we are able to change things and add thing to photographs and so therefore showing the new side. If I were to reshoot this photo shoot, I would look into taking the photos of the brother and sister doing things that they do one a regular bases like: watching TV or playing sports as then we would be able to see the difference form what children were like in the olden days compared to now.
Interpretations of Julia Margret Cameron’s work Idecided to interpret julia Margert Camerons’s work as I was interguided at the emotion that her phoptographs portray. I also like the way that her work looks very aged and outdated compared to photos that are taken now-a-days. I like this as it gives the photos a delecate, fragile and valuable look to them therefore showing the the photographs may have not been of any value when they were taken but when seeing them now becomes a great privalge as they have been kept in a condition that we can still see the photos but we know that they were taken a long time ago and so it is almost like the photos are becoming a piece of history. When doing the photoshoot, I wanted to take the basic layout of the photo that Julia used but make it more of a moderenised version of her work. This would mean that the relationship would be between the old and new photograph but also the relationship that is happing in the photographs. The photograph that Julia took of a young girl who has her arms crossed in front of her with her head resting on her arms is one that captured and inspired me the most to re-create her work as I like the way that you can see teh emotion by the way that the way that the girl has been positioned. I have done three of my own interpretaionsof this photo. The first one is the photo, that is on the top left-hand-side of the page, I have taken is an interpretaion of the Julia’s photo as the girl that is in my photo, has the same positioning/layout (arms crossed with her head on her arms) as Julia’s photo, but I have modernised the photo by adding a row of flowers in front of the model. I have then editted the photo, to make the similar layout in the photo, black and white to make it look like an older photo, but then with the flowers, I have put and oil painted effect on them, and then used the harrion shutter effect to get the vivid colours and three dimentional look to the flowers. This makes then makes the photo look alot more modern as the colours and effect that is on the flowers would have not been possible in the time that the orginal photo was taken. The second photo that I have taken to interpret Julia’s photo is the one at the bottom, just of center of the page. This photo interperts the one of the young girl as my photo is the same positing of the models but I have then added a patterened overlay ontop of the whole photo but where the pattren is on the models faces I have lowered the opacity so that it almost become part of there real appearence. The Squares make the the photo become more modern as the it makes the photo look more contempory and up-to-date with the technology that we have. The third photo that I have done to interpret the photo by Julia, is the one in the bottom righthand-corner. The model in my photo is convaying the same annoyed emotion as the girl in the orginal photo as when as my model being in the same position. I have also added a sepia tone to just the girl in my photo so that she becomes the aged part in the photo and the background as be modernised by appling the harrison shutter effect to only the background. This adds bright colours and movement to the photo which would have not been possible at the time when Julia took her photos. The photo the is in the left bottom-hand-corner, is intreperting the a photo that Julia took of two young girls who are sitting on a old iron bench and are dressed in large expensive smart dress and one is holding a wooden walking stick. In the photo that I have taken, I have used the same principle in the photo where I have taken two people that are sitting on a bench but instead of holding an old walking stick one of them is holding an umbrella. The clothes that my models are wearing, are smart clothes but you are able to see the change in fashion/appearance in Julia’s photo compared to mine and so it is showing the relationship of change. With my photograph, I have edited it so that my models are in a dark sepia colour and are slightly blurred to make it look like they were photographed with an old fashion camera. I have enhance the colours in the background so that you are able to see the difference between old and new. The photo that is in the top right-hand-corner, is interpretation a photo by Julia where two girls, who could possibly be sisters, are positioned with the younger one having her head resting on the older sibling-almost like the older one is protecting/ comforting the younger one. In Julia’s photo, there are also many flowers placed around the siblings. In my photograph, I have taken a photo of a brother and a sister from a side angle to show tat the younger one, has her head resting on the older ones shoulder, like the photo that Julia took. I have then edited this photo so that it is in black and white to represent the old look to the photo. I have then copied and added flowers that were from a different photo on to the photo of the two siblings. I then made the flower an overlay to the photo and enhanced the colours of the flowers to make the colours very bright and bold. These flowers make the photo look modern as the colours would not have been able to be achieved in the time when Julia took her photos. Due to the flowers being an overlay to the original photo, it almost makes them look as if they are falling and so therefore also give the photo a sense of movement.
Ed Rushca Ed Ruscha, is a photographer and artist who lives in Los Angeles (LA). He says that the work that he creates has no real agenda or point of communication that is seen or talked about when looking at his work. Instead of having a specific meaning to his work, Ruscha likes to look at the topic of the photograph straight on and just explore the subject. This creates the photo to almost have no emotion or style to it. Ed Ruscha started to take photographs of gasoline stations (in America) as he sees that land that used to once belong to the Indians but now belongs to man. He almost sees the change in environment and the way life has evolved. He looks at the gasoline stations and says that if someone is inspired by it, they may take a painting of it but when being a photographer, it allows him to be able to take photographs at dramatic angles that are different to paintings. Ruscha also started to take photographs of parking lots. He started doing this almost by accident, as when he was taking a helicopter ride across the city of LA he seemed to notice the parking lots very distinctively. He said that the basic look of the car park impressed him and when looking more closely at the parking lot, it seem to speak back to him making it have some type of value. He wanted to photograph this as the way that he had a top view perspective instead of a normal base line/eye level view; it allowed him to have a wider view on the parking lot. Also due to the topside view, it made certain aspects of the parking lot so small that they almost disappeared, but on the other hand, certain parts become a lot more distinct and came to the foreground of the photograph.

I like Ruscha’s work as it is very simple to look at and aesthetically pleasing as there is no confusion or hidden messages when looking at the photographs. The only things that we are looking at are the harsh lines that are in the photos and the relationship between the buildings and the sky. There is a relationship in his photographs as where the sky meets the rooftops, it will form different shapes to the edges of the sky depending on the buildings and nature that is around them. I like the way that all of his photo’s are in black and white as then there is nothing to detract from the actual image itself, you are naturally drawn in by the shapes and lettering on the buildings.

Contact Sheet, Photo Shoot Plan and Evaluation:
PLANNING A PHOTO SHOOT: The main aim of this photo shoot is to look around the school environment that I will be in, and take several photographs that show the relationship between the skyline and also between things that are man-made and things that are natural. This photo shoot will be done in an outdoor environment as I need to be able to take photographs of the skylines, which are outside. Another reason for doing the photo shoot outdoors is because there are also a lot of man-made and natural objects that work together, for example a flower (natural) and the plant pot (man-made) that holds it. The photographs that I will be taking, will be of a still life and an urban setting. This is because the still life will come from the objects that are man-made and natural and the urban setting will come from the skyline as it will be filled with roof tops/buildings. The source of light will ebb coming from the sun as I will be outdoors. This means that the direction of where the light is coming from, can vary depending on where and what I am taking a photograph of. The backdrop in the photographs will be of the environment that I am in. This is because I want to be able to see the environment that I am in as this is a part of the main aim of the photo shoot. When doing the photo shoot, I will make sure that I take the photographs that include a wide range of camera angles. These could include: looking up, looking down, eye level, side on etc.‌ The main focal point in the photographs will be the mid-ground or background. This is because these area will be the main interest as a skyline is in the background. For this photo shoot I will not need the use of any props. THE IOS, SHUTTER SPEEDS AND F SETTINGS THAT I USED: When doing the photo shoot I used a range of IOS settings, these are: 200, 400, 320. I also used a range of shutter speeds when taking the photographs, these are: 1/160, 1/320, 1/250, 1/125, 1/100, 1/80, 1/400, and 1/500. In this photo shoot I used a variety of F numbers as well. These are: 6.3, 9.0, 8.0, 10.0, 5.6, 7.1, and 11.0. EVALUATION: The main aim of this photo shoot was to be able to go out and take several photos of the skyline that was around me and also objects that were able to show the relationship between man-made and natural objects. When taking the photographs, it was sometime difficult not to take a photographs that was facing the sun. This meant that the lighting in the photograph was sometime very light and bright. With the photographs, I have edited a few by using Camera Raw to enhance the colours and clarity of the photographs. I have also used Photoshop to manipulate the photographs as I have changes one to black and white and I have applied the Harrison shutter effect to another. I think the photographs that best capture my aim are the ones that I have taken looking upwards at the sky and the building that is creating a skyline. Due to the angle at which I have taken the photographs, it makes it seem very two dimensional and not like a building. This makes the photographs more intriguing to the viewer. If I were to reshoot this photo shoot, I would take photographs of several; different skylines. This could mean taking photographs of a rural skyline line and then comparing them to an urban skyline.
Man-Made Vs Natural and Skylines
These photographs, were taken due to the relationship that they show. This is because there is either a relationship between the a natural and man-made combination or between the natural sky and the buildings that make it become a different shape. These photos link to the work of Ed rushca as he takes photographs that have no real meaning or emotion to them, and so he is mostly exploring the subject of the photo and not the meaning behind it. My photos follow the same type of principle as these photos have no meaning to the observer and so it is almost meaning to them but it can be aesthetically pleasing for them to look at. With the photos, I have mostly edited them on camera raw so that I could enhance the colours and overall look of the photograph. I wanted to enhance the colours in the photos as I wanted the colours to have a big contrast against the colours that are in the buildings. In the photograph in the top right hand corner, I have edited it using Photoshop. I have used an effect called the Harrison shutter. I created this effect by copying the photo three times and the changing the reds, greens, and blues in the photo. I then moved each layer of the photos to be able to get photos to be able to get the three dimensional effect to the photo I think that this effect works really well with the photo as it creates a lot more lines within the photo making It become very linear. I also edited the photo that is in the bottom right hand corner. I changed this photo to a light version of black and white. This is because I wanted the photo to represent Ed Ruscha’s work as all of his photos of skylines were taken in black and white. By changing the colour to black and white, it makes the photo look a lot older and makes it become a lot more out-dated compared to what it was originally. As it makes some parts of the building look old, brittle and cracked in areas. These photographs, link to the theme of relationships as when looking at the photos we naturally make a comparison between sky and the harsh shapes that are formed by the buildings. There is also a relationship that is the combination of something that is natural (the sky in this case) and something that is manmade (the buildings).
So Far...
Section 1: So far, I have chosen a theme of relationships. I have chosen this theme as I like the way that a photograph is able to capture any type of relationship that we may not see in everyday life. I have explored this theme by taking several photograph to create a mind-map of photographs that show a link to the theme. The type of relationships that are shown in these photographs, are things like: old and new, things that are permanently interlocking and the relationship between colours and something that is plain. I have also create a mind-map page based on several photographers that look at the theme of relationships in their work. By doing this, it has helped me to think of lots of different ideas for my work. By doing this work, I have learnt that a relationship can be lots of different things and interpreted in loads of different ways. I have researched the artists: Julia Margret Cameron, Ed Rushca, and Francessca Woodman. By researching these artists it has helped me to gain a better understanding of the theme as it has helped me to see that a relationship could simply be between the camera and the composition that is being photographed. This is because the photographer is taking the photograph for a particular reason and so they will have a relationship between this. On the other hand, the relationship theme, can have a much more in-depth meaning towards the objects and or people that are in the photo and so it can be harder to see what is meaning is. Section 2: I used the artist: Julia Margret Cameron’s ideas to inspire my own photo shoot. This is because I looked at the way that she composed her photos and then I took my photographs in a similar composition but put a modern twist on the photographs by adding bright colours and more objects to the photos. This then created a relationship between new and old. Her photographs also show a relationship between the composition and what is being photographed as the way that certain emotions are displayed in the photos can have an effect on the way that the composition is taken. The artist Ed Ruscha also inspired me as when looking at the way there are relationships between man-made and natural things or the skylines can have a relationship between the buildings and or trees that may be obstructing the views. His work inspired me to go out and take photographs of the environment where I live and take several photographs that follow the same principle. Other influences that have helped me to develop my ideas are the way that our society and the way that we live, we are depended on certain things to survive and or the enjoyment that comes with having certain objects. This therefore creates a relationship in its own as then people become attached to these objects and these objects become a way of life for the person. Section 3: So far, I have taken photo shoots on anything that will relate to the idea of relationships, two interpretations photo shoots on Julia Margret Cameron and Ed Ruscha, and a photo shoot of someone who is related to objects and shows their identity through these objects. Thought these photo shoots I have used several different camera settings like: shutter speed, Program, sports mode, macro and the automatic and manual modes. I have used these camera settings as it creates a vast verity of photographs. The different settings can create several different effects on the photographs, which are creating the photo to become a lot more interesting than normal. The technique that I have used is scanning. Scanning objects that relate to my theme have helped me to develop my chosen theme as by scanning the objects, it shows a different way of digitising something. It also creates interesting and different photographs as there are effects created when scanning that aren’t possible when taking photos and editing them. After scanning the objects, I can edit them on Photoshop and or camera raw so that I can add different effects to the scans or enhance the colours and clarity of the scan. I may take scanning further on into my exam work as I really like the outcome and look of the scans as they can create interesting backgrounds to work or can be used to can already taken photos mixed with objects that my relate to the photo or the person that may possibly be in the photo. Section 4: The ideas that I could take further to develop my theme are the ideas of old and new and I also like the idea of showing a relationship between the composition and what is being photographed. This is because I like the way that it can portray something different to any one who may look at the photos. I also like the way the old and new also shows a relationship between opposites and so the idea of opposites could come for taking photographs of things that are old and new. I can make use of the artists that I research as they can help to give me ideas of what type of things I should be photographing so that there is a connection between my ideas and the work that I have been looking at. It can also help me to think of ways of generating new ideas that are based upon their work but have my own twist on the photos making them unique but still showing the theme of relationships thought the photos. The techniques that I have that I have been experimenting with can help me in further development, as I will be able to look back at what I have used and done and see what was successful and possibly be used in my final stages of work. The photo shoot that I need to further develop is my artist interpretation of Julia Margret Cameron showing the relationship between old and new. This is because I can look into other things that show a relationship between new and old. This will then give me the chance to look at more techniques and processes that could be used to help me in my final piece.
Contact Sheet, Photo Shoot Plan and Evaluation:
PLANNING A PHOTO SHOOT: The main aim of this photo shoot is to take photographs of my model doing a sport that related to him, and in this case it will be skateboarding. This photo shoot will be done in an outdoor environment so that my model is able to skate board freely and be able to make large movements without being restricted. In this photo shoot, I will be using one model that will have objects that relate to him, these are his skateboard and a pair of headphones. This is because I want to be able to show the relationship that my model has with these objects, as he is then able to show the sport that he is able to do. When taking the photographs, I used the natural lighting that was around me when taking the photographs. Due to the natural light not being very light at this time, I may need to use the flash on the camera at certain points if it is to become any darker. When taking the photographs, I will not be using a studio backdrop; I will be using the natural environment. Where I will be taking the photographs, there is a long wooden fence and this will become the backdrop to the photographs. This is because the fence is not too overpowering for the photographs yet it will still be able to look effective and give the photo some texture. When taking the photograph I will try to get a variation on the camera angles that I use. Although I will try and vary the camera angle, I will mostly be angling the camera straight on at eye-level with the skateboard, so that this becomes that main focus. The focal point in the photographs will be the mid-ground. This is because this is where my model will be performing his tricks on the skateboard and so this area will need to be the most in focus. For this photo shoot I didn’t need any props but I needed to make sure that my model had his skateboard and headphones. THE IOS, SHUTTER SPEEDS AND F NUMBERS THAT I USED: The IOS speeds that I used in this photo shoot were: 400, 720, 800 900, 100, 3200, 2800, 640, 560, and 1100. The shutter speeds that I used in this photo shoot varied a lot, as I wanted to be able to create a sense of movement in the still photographs. The shutter speeds include: 1/40, 1/60, 1/5, 1/320, 1/400, 1/250, 1/500, 1/15, 1/10, and 130. The F numbers that I used in this photo shoot were: 5.0, 3.8, 4.5, 3.5, 5.6, 6.3, 8.0, 7.1, 4.2, 10.0, 11.0, and 9.0. EVALUATION: The main aim of this photo shoot was too be able to get several photographs of my model showing a relationship between himself and the skateboarding that he is doing. When doing the photo shoot, it was sometimes difficult to capture the image at the exact time that I wanted it and so therefore it took me several attempts to get it right. With the photographs I have selected my favourite ones and edited them by using both Camera Raw and Photoshop to be able to add effects to the photos to make them more aesthetically pleasing and intriguing to look at. I think that the photographs that I have edited best match the aim of my photo shoot, as you are able to clearly see who my model is and what he is doing. If I were to reshoot this photo shoot I would consider going to skate parks where my model often goes and take some photographs there. This is because my model will be in the environment that he is often in and so he is used to being here and my have personal relationships to where he skates. This could be due to achievements, relating to skateboarding, that he has been able to do there.
I took these photographs to show a relationship between my model and the objects that he is occosiated with. This is way I have photos of my model with a skateboard and headphones. He is very interested in skateboarding and does it nearly everyday and so most of his friends and family will know this. It also means that he has become almost attached to his skateboard as he is with it nearly all the time. I have photos of my model with headphones as he is very interested in music and often listens to it when going out or when going skateboarding. When taking these photos, I used several different camera settings when taking these photographs as I wanted to be able to get a wide variety of photos that all looked different and to get effects that I couldn’t necessary get if I was just editing them on Photoshop and or camera raw. The camera settings that included in this photo shoot were: shutter speed adjustments, sports mode, macro and automatic settings. The photo on the top left hand side, was taken on a very slow shutter speed (1/5) whilst my model did a move on his skateboard. This gave me a blurred and motion effect to the photograph. I then digitally edited the photo on camera raw so that I could increase the clarity and enhance the colours in the photo. I then edited the photo further on Photoshop to me able to flip the photo and the layer it on top of the original and change the opacity to get the mirrored look to the photo. The photograph in the top right hand corner was also taken on a slow shutter speed (1/5) while my model came past the camera on his skate board. Due to the photo being taken on a slow shutter speed, it made my model become very blurred and almost dragged along the photograph. I then edited this photograph on Camera Raw as I wanted to enhance the colours that were in the photograph as then my model became a lot more visible instead of him becoming merged
Photoshoot 1
in to the back ground. I then edited the photo on Photoshop by changing the curve levels in the photo. This enabled me to make the background have a slightly more blue tint to the photo. The photo in the bottom left hand corner was taken on the automatic setting on the camera. I then increased the clarity and increased the whites and blacks in the photo on Camera Raw to get the given look. Then on Photoshop, I selected al the way around the skateboard by using the magnetic lasso tool. With the selected area I copied it three times to be able to carry our the Harrison shutter effect. I moved each layer of the skateboard very slightly to be able to get the three dimensional and coloured effect. The photograph in the bottom right hand corner was taken again on the automatic setting on the camera and it is showing my model listening to music through headphones. This shows a relationship as he is often listening to music due to it being something that he enjoys. I then edited this photograph on Photoshop to create the Harrison shutter effect. After copying the three layers and taking out certain colours form each layer, I moved each layer in a digital way so that the three dimensional effect was created.
The photograph on the top left hand side, was again taken on a slow shutter speed (1/5). I took the photograph as my model was walking past the camera with his skateboard in his hands. I like the effect that the long shutter speed has created on the photograph makes the photo come to life as it seems like the model is continuing to walk even though the image is still. I have only edited this photograph on camera raw as I wanted to keep the simplicity of this photo and so I only enhance certain features like the colours and clarity. The photograph on the right hand side of the page was originally two separate photos that I have digitally combined by using Photoshop. I combined these two photos as they both show two different things that my model is very interested in. By using Photoshop i was able to select around the outline of my model on one photo and then layer it onto the other one. Then with the layer that was on top, I lowered the opacity so that you were able to see the photograph underneath. The photograph that is in the bottom left hand corner was taken on a slow shutter speed (1/5) so that when my model moved his skateboard there would be a trail that was left behind it. I then edited this photograph on camera raw. I increased the saturation of this photo quite a lot as I wanted the colour that was in the skateboard to be carried on though the blurred trail that the skateboard made. The last photograph that is on this page (bottom centre) is a combination of three different types of photos, that were all taken on the sports mode on the camera. I wanted to combine these three photos as it is almost like it has become one continuous movement that my model is doing and so therefore it almost looks like a time lines of what he is doing. I was able to create this photograph by using Photoshop to layer the images together and then use a blurred eraser to rub away the areas of the photograph that I didn’t need. I then changes the opacity of the figures so that you are able to see through the figures. All of these photographs link to the theme of relationships as my model is doing things that are associated with him and things that he also enjoys to do for a past time. I really like these photographs as they are all have the same meaning behind them but due to the camera settings and the editing they have been manipulated and changed to look different and slight;y more sticking to the observer. My favourite photograph is the one that is at the bottom centrer of this page. This is because when looking at the photo, it doesn’t seem like photos have been added to it to make the triplet. I also like that fact that this photograph is an action shot and so there is already natural movement added to this photo when looking at it as my model is starting off in mid-air. By then adding the two other figures it makes the observer follow the movement that is taking place and will link together the three sections/figures to be able to complete the movement that is taking place.
Contact Sheet, Photo Shoot Plan and Evaluation:
PLANNING A PHOTO SHOOT: The main aim of this photo shoot is to look around my surroundings and see what types of colours and textures there were around me. This is because there can be an interesting contrast that is created between the different colours and the texture can make the photo look more interesting to look at. The photo shoot will mainly be done in an outdoor environment as there is naturally a lot more colours and textures to be seen outdoors than there is indoors. The photo shoot will mainly consist of still life objects as I will be looking around the natural environment that I am in and so this means the photos will mainly consist of objects that people will usually see in their everyday life. The lighting source in the photo shoot will be the natural light (sunlight. This is because I will be outdoors and there will be no need for the artificial lighting that may be needed indoors. When taking the photographs, I will try to make sure that the sun light is coming from behind me or over me. The backdrop in the photographs will be the natural environment as this could provide the photographs with more colour and texture compared to using a plain white or black studio backdrop. When doing the photo shoot I will make sure that I use a variety of camera angles so that there is different angles at which the photographs can be seen from. These camera angles could include: looking up, looking down, eye level and many more. The focal point in the photographs will mainly be the fore-ground as this is where the still life objects will mostly be and so I want these objects to be the most in focus as they are the most important aspects of the photographs. In this photo shoot I will not need the use of any props. THE IOS SPEEDS, SHUTTER SPEEDS AND F NUMBERS THAT I USED: In this photo shoot I used a wide variety of IOS speeds, these were: 800, 560, 1000, 400, 200, 360, 280, 220, 250, 320, and 720. I also used a variety of shutter speeds, these were: 1/25, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/20, 1/10, 1/80, 1/160, 1/200, 1/25, and 1/50. In the photo shoot I also used a range of F numbers these were: 4.8, 4.5, 5.0, 4.2, 5.0, 6.3, 7.1, 5.6, 8.0, 3.8, 4.0, and 3.5. EVALUATION: The aim of this photo shoot was to get several photographs that are able to show a variety of difference in colours and textures. When taking the photographs, I did not face any technical or logistic difficulties. From the photo shoot I have selected my favourite photographs and edited them by using Camera Raw and Photoshop. On Photoshop I was able to enhance and change the colours of the photos therefore making them more effective and relating to the aim of the photo shoot. I think that the photo of the coloured chains best captures my aim as the way that chains are all interlocking show a relationship of connection and the colours are very bright and eye catching and so therefore it draws the viewer to the photo. I also like the way that the background is out of focus and the fore-ground is in focus, as this gives the photo a sense that it is three dimensional. If I were to re-shoot this photo shoot I would take photographs of people that have very bright coloured clothes on and these clothes will also be able to give the photograph texture due to the fabrics that are used.
Colours and Textures
These photographs are photographs that all show and element of colours and textures. These is a relationship shown between these photographs as the colours that are shown all contrast with one another. This is effective as the colours are all completely different to one another and so the difference that is shown is very strong and bold. With the photographs, i have edited them on Camera Raw and or Photoshop. By doing this i was able to enhance the clarity and colours of the photo on Camera Raw and then make some digital edits on the photos. The digital edits that i have included are: overlays, inverting the photo, and changing the curves within the photo. My favourite photo within these photographs is the on that is in the centre on the bottom row. This is because i really like the way that the chain s in the photo all show a relationship by linking together but i also really like the way that the photo as a really deep depth of field to it. This is because the chains that are in the foreground of the photograph are in focus but the ones that are towards the back of the photo are slightly more blurred and out of focus. This also gives the photographs a three dimensional effect to it.
Techniques - Cropping
What does cropping do to the image?
By cropping the photograph, it focuses in on certain places and makes you see things in more depth that you might not have seen before. By cropping the photo, it also creates dramatic angles and textures in the photo that may not have been as noticeable in the original. It can also cause the photo to look and seem like a completely different one to the original.
Which is your favourite and why?
My favourite cropped photo is the one at the bottom centre of the page. This is because when cropping the photo, it focused in on the small piece of grass and the a small section on brick. By seeing theses two parts of the photo very close up, you can see the way that the grass is slowly starting to die away due to the man made brick that is creating a shadow over the grass- therefore not allowing sunlight to get to it.
Techniques- Rotation
What does rotation do to the image?
By having several of the same photo and rotating them in different way, it makes a new photo- one that is mirrored/reflected and looks very athletically pleasing to look at. When rotating the photographs, it can also create new patterns with in the images as everything joins together and so therefore creates a lot of visual paths thought the photo.
Which is your favourite and why?
My favourite photo is the one on the left hand side of the page. This is because I really like the way that the chains all link together and almost seem as if the are con-caved in the middle of the photo and look as if they are slightly angled making it look more three dimensional. I also like the way that a pattern is created in the background of this photo. The pattern that is created looks like it has been repeated and mirrored which is pleasing to look at as it makes the piece very symmetrical,
This image was created by taking the rotated image of the three images in the polygon frame. I then Copied and pasted (two times) and paired the two images together and then flipped on vertically, I then did this several times until i got the desired shape that I wanted. I like the effect that this has created as each row is the same photo but when flipping the images and pairing them together it can make certain areas look very different from others. By joining them together, it almost makes it seem like it is all one big photograph that has been cut up around the edges. I think that this is effective as it can be done with any section of a photograph and still get the rotated effect. It is also good as it changes the original look of the photograph.
Techniques- Repetition
What does repetition do to the photograph?
Repetition means to repeat certain aspects of the photograph. By doing this it creates a pattern and layered effect to the photographs- almost creating individual steps in the photo. By repeating certain areas of the photos it enables me to focus in on sections of the photograph, its like zooming in only we are able to see each individual step taken to be able to zoom in on a particular area. With each step that has been take, I have changed the opacity of the photos. At the back of the repeated photographs, I have made the opacity a lot lower and then gradually made each section higher in opacity until the front section was on 100%. By changing the opacity, it has created a three dimensional effect to the photographs.
Which is your favourite and why?
My favourite repeated photograph is the one that had been done with the polygon shape tool- bottom left hand corner. This is because I think that the opacity levels have worked really well in this photograph as the three dimensional effect has worked very will on this one. I also like the way that the photo of the plant all lines up with each individual step that has been taken as it creates good vertical lines thought the piece.
Techniques - Scanograms Scanography is a type of fine art and it is done to capture digital images. Objects are arranged on a flat bed scanner and then the image can be captured. Objects that are arranged on the screen of the scanner, can be two dimensional and or three dimensional. If only two dimensional objects are used on the scanner, the lid from the scanner can simply be put down, but if there are three dimensional objects used, then a box will be needed to place over the scanner. The inside of the box will also need to be painted black so that the objects can be seen and the three dimensional look can be seen. Audery Flack is an artist that paints still life images of objects that show a feminine look to her work as she is showing a stereotyping of women in her work. She has done this by selecting items like: flowers, jewellery, make-up etc... that are stereotypically related and occosiated with women in her work. When looking at Flack’s work, it inspired me when creating my scanograms as i like the way the her work is composed and the way the colours link in with one others there for complimenting the look of her paintings. When selecting the objects that I wanted to pick ones that linked in colours and also show a difference in old and new and things that typically occosiated with one another. Due to my objects being fairly three dimensional, I made sure that I had a box that was painted black. I wanted/needed to have this box as then it made sure that my arrangement was not ruined by the lid of the scanner and it created the objects to become a lot more obvious and in the foreground of the digital image that was captured.
These four scanograms, were all created using a flat bed scanner. In the first scan, the one in the bottom left hand corner, I chose to selected several pieces of broken and aged china that had a distinctive blue pattern on. I choose to use these as that all show a relationship between each piece. This is because the pattern that is on the pieces of china all link back up together if they weren’t shattered into small pieces. I then decided to make a background to the scan by taking a piece of plastic that had old and dried up paint smudged all over it. Due to this, it almost creates a sense of movement and or motion to the piece. I chose to use this as there are small parts of blue paint on the plastic and this ties together with the blue that is in the china pieces. I also wanted to use this as the broken china and the background create a relationship as the china is ruined due to it being broken and the piece of plastic that is used in the background is also ruined as it has bits of paint dried and stained on top of it In the second scan, the one at the bottom left of centre of the page, includes: fake flowers, a broken mirror, old real flowers, a sliver metal and cling film. In this scanogram, I really like the way that the cling film has created a rainbow coloured effect to the scan due to parts reflecting the light that is used to make the scan. I also like the way that the cling film almost confines the objects together and makes them looked trapped underneath. The use of the cling film also make it look like the scan is very rough and textured because of all the crinkles that are in the cling film. The broken mirror that is in the scan, almost seems as if you would be able to see a refection of some sort in it, but you can only see flashes of colour that have been distorted by the cracks in the mirror. This scan shows a relationship as the use of the cling film, broken mirror, and sliver mental all show something that is man-made and quite harsh and sharp to look at but then on the other hand, the flowers balance this out as they sure a pure and natural side to the combination of objects. The scan that is in the bottom right hand side, show a combination of; flowers, a broken mirror, a film roll and the cord from an old casket tape. By intertwining the cord, from the casket player, amongst all the objects, it makes a visual path thought the scan as the observers eye naturally falls the lines. The use of the black box in this scan, has been very effective as it almost seems as if the objects are a lot further away than being in the foreground of the scan. In the last scan, top right hand side, it has a combination of several objects that all individually related to another object. I have created this scan by layering several objects on top on one another. I chose all of these objects as the colours all combine well together as there are shades of subtle pinks and browns. I like this scan as i think it links to Flack’s work the most as there are several objects that relate to women but don’t necessary define them and so it makes the observer think about what they are looking at and why it may relate to them. All of my scans, were only edited with the use of camera raw. This is because i wanted to keep the simplicity with the scans. I wanted to keep the simplicity as I like the way that the objects are easily seen and identified.
Contact Sheet, Photo Shoot Plan and Evaluation:
PLANNING A PHOTO SHOOT: The main aim of this photo shoot, is to look at photo shoot one, and see ways in which I can develop the idea of people being related to a sport and improve on the first photo shoot that I have done. This has resulted in me to set up a photo shoot to take photos of a new model who will be dancing. This photo shoot will be done in an outside environment, like what I have done in photo shoot one. This is because in photo shoot one I think that the background looked effective against the fast movement that were happing in front of it. I also think that the colour of the fencing (once edited) matches nicely with the colours of the models. The lighting that I will use in the photo shoot will be the natural light. This is because I will be doing the photo shoot in an outdoor environment and so the sunlight is a sufficient amount of light in the photographs and so therefore there is no need to use any artificial lighting. The backdrop in the photographs is the fencing that was also used in photo shoot one. This is because the fencing creates a good sense of texture but also the colour matches well with the colours that my model is wearing. When taking the photographs, I will most likely be using an eye level angle as I want to be able to get all of my model in the photographs and I also do not want to distort the look of my model by looking from above or below. The focal point in the photographs will be the foreground. This is because this is where my model will be and so I want her to be the main focus of the photograph. For this photo shoot I will be using a small set of fairly lights for my model to use while she is dancing. THE IOS SPEEDS, SHUTTER SPEEDS AND F NUMBERS THAT I USED: In this photo shoot I use a wide variety of IOS speeds, these were: 100, 3200, 2000, 2500, 2800, 560, 400, 800, 450, 1100, 640, 900, 1400, and 100. I also used a variety of shutter speeds in this photo shoot as I wanted to be able to experiment with this, as then I will be able to create a movement look to the photographs. The shutter speeds used were: 1/5, 1/200, 1/250, 1/500, 1/320, 1/400, 1/500, 1/30, 1/60, 1/13, 2.5, 1.3, 0.5, 0.6, and 1/8. In this photo shoot I used a range of F numbers, these were: 3.5, 4.5, 5.0, 5.6, 4.0, 3.8, and 4.2. EVALUATION: The aim of this photo shoot was to take a series of photographs that showed the relationship that the model has to dancing. When taking the photographs, it was sometime difficult to capture the image at the time I needed it, and so this meant that my model had to do the same movement several times so that I was able to get the right photo. With the photo graphs, I have mostly edited them by using Camera raw as I felt that the photos did not require a lot of editing as the movement that was being shown though the photo was enough for the viewer to see. If I were to reshoot this photo shoot I would may be consider taking photograph of my model in a dance studio where there are several large mirrors. This is because I think that the reflection of my model dancing will look very effective and maybe confusing for the viewer. This will result in the viewer wanting to look at the photo longer to answer their own questions about the photographs.
Re-Shoots of photo shoot 1 I wanted to do a re-shoot of photo shoot 1 as I wanted to expand on the idea of people and there relationship between the activity that they can become attached to. In this case my model, is associated to dance. She as become attached to dancing as she as been doing nearly all her life and carries onto to peruse her role in dance. When doing this re-shoot, I wanted to make sure that I was able to capture the movement and expression when my model was dancing. When taking the photographs, I used a mixture of slow shutter speeds and putting camera on the sports mode setting. I did this as I wanted to get a variety of photos that were blurred and still. In the first photograph (the one on the top left hand side)i combined to still photos together. I did this by layering one photo on top of the other on Photoshop, and then I lowered the opacity of the image that was on top. Then with the image that was on the top, I erased away parts of the photo, like the background, away so that I was just left with the face and hands of my model. I like this digital edit as you can see that in the photo that is in the background, them model is in movement and I have captured her while she was dancing. On the other hand, the photo that has a lower opacity, is the model standing still and pulling a movement that she would normally do in movement. The way the one of the hands from my model is coming towards the centre of the photo, draws you in making you want to look at the photo. The second photograph (the one on the top right hand side of the page) is also a digital edit. This digital edit was created by using Photoshop and Then again combining two different photographs together. The multicoloured lines that are on this photo was originally a photo of my model dancing with lights that I took on a slow shutter speed. I Then edited this photograph by applying the Harrison Shutter Effect to the photo and lowering the opacity. I then took the second photo which was a still photo of my model and layered it underneath the photo of the lights. I then erased away the section of the light photo where my model was, so that you were able to see her amongst the lights. I like this digital edit as I like the way the movement of the lights and the still captured image of my model dancing show a contrast between the two different images. I also like the way that the colours of the lights stand out amongst the darker photo. The last photo-
graphs were five separate photographs that i took in a row of my model spinning. I then digitally edited these photograph on Camera Raw and them layered them out and cropped sections of each photo that I didn’t need. I like the effect that this gives to the photos as it makes it seem as if my model is moving across the page.
Contact Sheet, Photo Shoot Plan and Evaluation:
PLANNING A PHOTO SHOOT: The main aim of this photo shoot is to take photographs of my model doing her sport, which is running. When doing the photo shoot I need to make sure that I am able to convey the relationship that my model has with the sport that she is doing. This photo shoot is going to be done in an outdoor environment as running cannot be done indoors and so I needed my model to be in the environment that she is usually when she is running. In this photo shoot I will be using a person as this way I will be able to show the personal relationship that she has with running. This relationship/emotion may not be able to be seen by people when she is running but when photographing it, it tends to make the viewer question these things. The lighting will be a natural lighting due to being outdoors and not needing artificial lighting. The backdrop in this photo shoot will be the natural environment as I want it to seem as if the model is naturally running and unknown to the fact that I am taking a photographs of her. When taking the photographs, I will mainly be using an eye level camera angle as I want to be able to make it seem as if the viewer is looking straight on at the model and not looking at a photograph. The focal point in the photographs will mostly be the foreground or mid-ground. This is because I want my model to be that main focus of the photo shoot and so I need to make sure that she is always in-focus. For this photo shoot I will use a bottle of water as this links in with the theme of running. THE IOS SPEEDS, SHUTTER SPEEDS AND F NUMBERS THAT I USED: In this photo shoot, I used a range of IOS speeds, these were: 100, 800, 400, 640, 450, 1600, 1000, 2200, and 560. I also used a wide range of shutter speeds as I wanted to be able to show the movement that was created in some of the photographs: 1/60, 1/80, 1/20, 1/100, 1/125, 1/160, 1/250, 1/800, 1/30, 1/25, 1/200, 1/320, 1/400, 1/500. I also used a rage of F numbers, these were: 4.0, 8.0, 4.5, 3.5, 9.0, 5.0, 13.0, 10.0, 7.1, 6.3, 4.8, 5.6, and 11.0. EVALUATION: The aim of this photo shoot, was to be able to get several photographs that were able to show the relationship between my model and the sport that she is doing (running). I also wanted to be able to elaborate my ideas that I had on photo shoot 1 and my reshoots. When doing the photo shoot, it was a very bright and sunny day and so it meant that I always had to make sure that the sun was behind the camera. I think that the photo that best captures my aim is one that has been taken on a slow shutter speed and is showing just my models legs while she is running. This is because as the viewer you are able to see the movement that the model is doing and to me I think that this looks effective. If I were to reshoot this photo shoot, I would may be think about changing some of the camera angles. Although by looking at my model at eye level, it mean that she isn’t distorted in any way, I would still consider changing the camera angles as then there would be more variation in how the viewer was to see my model.
Photo shoot 3
These photographs are of my model running. This shows a relationship as the model who is in my photos does running nearly everyday and so she has become attach to this type of sport. The reason why she has become attach to running is because she likes to run nearly everyday so that she is able to keep herself fit and active. The photo graph on the top left hand corner of the page was edited by using Photoshop. I Digitally edited this photograph by using the Harrison shutter effect. I firstly selected all the way around the outline of my model and then copied this section three times. This then enabled me to be able to select the certain colours for the photos to be able to do the effect. I then slightly moved each layer so that I was able to create the three dimensional effect on my model. I like this photograph as i think that the angle at which the photograph as be taken is interesting as you immediately look at the bottom of the foot from the model as it is the largest and first thing that you see. You then look up to see what the photographs is. I also like the way that the Harrison Shutter Effect makes it look as if my model is moving slightly- as if she was getting ready to take off and start sprinting. The photograph that is in the centre of the top line has also been digitally edited my using Photoshop. This photograph is a combination of three separate photographs that have been join together to look as if the model is running along the photo. To make this photograph, I layered three images on top of one another and positioned them in the places that I wanted. I then lowered the opacity on the right hand figure and also on the centre one but not as much. Then with these two figures I erased away the area that was all around my model so that I was just left with the figure. I like this digital edit as the way that the figure start of quite transparent and then slowly start to go back to normal makes it look aa if my model is running very quickly as it seems like she if leaving herself behind (almost like a trail). The remaining photographs on this page were edited by using Camera Raw. I wanted to edit them in this way as I wanted to enhance the clarity and the colours in the photograph. The two photographs that are slightly blurred were taken on a slow shutter speed (1/5) while my model was running. I like the effect that this has created as it makes it seem as if she is still running in the captured photo. The portrait photo of my model on the page, was taken to show the identity of my model. I like this photo as I feel that it captures her personality and still shows that she is a runner due to the clothes that she is wearing. This allows the view to make assumptions of her.
Sporting Campaigns- Nike, Addidas and Reebox When doing my photo shoots of my models doing the sports that they are dedicated to, it reminded me of sporting adverts due to the way that you can see the movements and dedication that they have toward there sports. Photo shoot three, is most linked to the sporting campaigns as in most of the campaigns, there are people/s running to advertise the clothing/shoe brands. These campaigns that have been made are almost like a motivational reminder for people to be able to keep fit and exercise regularly. I think that photo shoot is also like this as running is a form of exercise that anyone can do as there is nothing that needs to be learnt and you don’t have to be gifted in any way. The other two photo shoots that i have done, photo shoot one and the re-shoots also link in with the sporting campaigns as the dancing and skate boarding are also two different types of sport that I have included. The photographs link in as they are carrying out the sport while I am taking the photographs of them. On the other hand, these two sports do differ slightly from the running photographs as dancing and skate boarding require the person to be taught/self-taught on how to do certain moves and execute them with style and grace. On these sporting campaigns I really like the way that the text has been included. This is because it makes the photographs personalised to the models who are in the photograph. The photographs that is in the bottom left hand corner of the page (a photo of someone running then there is a photo of shoes with the text) is one of my favourite campaigns on this page. This is because i really like the way the text relates to the photograph by telling us how running has been able to change him and his life and so therefore shows us how it has benefited him. The text that is on the photographs could be something that I could consider to add to some of the photographs that I will be including in my final piece. To do this, I could ask my models why they do the sports that they are doing and how it is benefited them. This would then give the photographs more of a meaning to the viewer as then they will be able to understand why the model does the sport that they are doing and may be able to make a personal connection to the photograph.
Harold Edgerton Harold Edgerton was born in Fermont in Nebraska on the 6th of April 1903. When growing up, Edgerton’s childhood was spent in Fermont but he also moved to several places like: Washington D.C. and Lincoln. In Edgerton’s education, he was drawn to engineering and was able to get a degree in electrical engineering. Edgerton was also able receive many other awards due to his work in engineering. Edgerton says that the scientist and engineer Charles Stark Draper was the main person who inspired him to take his first photographs of objects. When taking these photographs, he used an electronic flash. In later life (1937), Edgerton became obsessed with the photographer: Gojn Mili. Mili was a photographer that incorporated the use of a multi-flash strobe lights in her work to create photographs that were new and exciting. Edgerton then adopted this idea in his own work by taking photographs of objects like balloons pooping and when something is at the point of impact. Due to Edgerton being a very good engineer and scientist, he was able to make and develop the perfect strobe lighting to create photos that are very aesthetically pleasing to look at but also very striking and different.
“In many ways, unexpected results are what have most inspired my photography.” - Harold Edgerton
I have chosen to research the artist Harold Edgerton as i feel that his photography as a nice link to mine. This is because Edgerton has taken many photographs of people doing an certain activity and what looking upon the photograph it seems as if the photograph has been taken on a very slow shutter speed as you are able to see the movement that is being carried out. In the photographs that i have taken of my models doing the sport that they are dedicated to, I have taken several of the photographs on a slow shutter speed so that you are able to see the movement that they are performing. Therefore this is very similar to the photographs that Edgerton has taken. Although the meaning behind Edgerton photos is different to mine, they still look the same in terms of features. I think that Edgerton’s work is very interesting as there is a very clear and defined image that is created and so it almost seems as if there are several people/objects in the photo and that it is not just one thing there fore it is deceiving to the eye.
Possible Ideas (Research)
I choose these images for possible ideas as I really like the way that these photographs have been laid out and displayed. I like the way that the same/ similar photographs have been arrange together. The image in the top left corner of the page is one of my favourites as I like the way that photos are on a paper that has been folded back and forth to create a concertina type of pattern. I like this as it almost makes it seem like a book- like it is telling a story through the photographs. This therefore creates a relationship between the way that the photos are seen from left to right. My second favourite image is the one on the right hand side of the page. This is because the way that there is one large photo of the model next to several smaller ones that have been taken in the same photo shoot, shows a good composition as it shows the diversity of what one person can look like. I could apply these ideas to my final piece by combining the two ideas together. This means i could have the larger images from my photo shoots on one side of a concertinaed piece of card and then smaller ones next to them. The relationship will be between the model and things that they like to do and occosiated with them.
Possible Idea 1:
This possible idea is an idea of how I could layout the photographs that I could use in my final piece. I like the way that this is layout as the large photographs, is a still photograph of my model, and then the smaller photographs are showing the viewers what sport my model is doing and the moves that she is able to perform. To improve this idea, I could make the piece more three dimensional as then it would be more interesting to look at as you will be able to look at it from several different directions/angles. I could also possibly mount some of the smaller photographs on to foam board so that there are different levels/layers to the piece, To the photographs, that I have used in this possible idea, I could include some digital edits. This could then allow the piece to become more colourful and aesthetically pleasing to look at. My possible ideas research has helped me when making this idea as the photograph that is on the right hand side of the research page, heavily influences this idea. This is because I have taken the same style of the layout but adapted it by using my own photographs. With this possible idea, I feel that this piece is slightly boring and uninteresting due to the fact that the piece is two dimensional and the photographs have no manual or digital techniques added to them. By improving them in the ways that I have stated above, it will mean the original idea will be able to be developed into something some exciting and interesting to the viewer.
Possible idea 2:
This possible idea, is a three dimensional concertina piece. This means that the piece of paper used is folded inwards and then outwards to almost get a triangle shape/ spring type of structure. I like the way that this looks as firstly you are able to see a portrait of the model, which doesn’t tell/show the viewer much apart for what they look like, but then when pulling out the paper you are able to see what the model is capable of doing in terms of movements and sport. This may come as a shock to the viewer as they may not have been expecting to see something like that and so this ideas also has the element of surprise to it. To improve this idea, I could make the piece on a bigger scale so that it is able to stand up and be viewed from many different angles. Due to the piece being made on a bigger scale, I could add several more photographs and possibly have a third model that is doing another type of sport as this could then show a contrast between the three different types of sport that can be played by three different types of people. My possible idea’s research helped my to think of this idea, as I was interested in the way the paper was folded in the top left picture on the page and so I wanted to re-created that idea in my own way. I also really liked the way that the photographs were laid out and so I consider this when making my idea. This idea is a development of possible idea one, as I have taken the idea of how I have laid out the photos, but I have mounted them on to a three dimensional piece to add move interest and movement.
Possible idea 3:
This possible idea, is a development of my possible idea two. This is because I have now taken the improvements from possible idea two and applied them to this idea. This possible idea is now a large concertina piece that is able to stand alone. This Idea can be viewed from both the left and right. I think that this is effective as when looking from the right hand side, the viewer will only be able to see the portrait pictures of my models, but when looking from the left hand side, you are able to see the movements and sports that the model is able to do. To improve this idea, I could add some more smaller photographs so that it becomes a four by three instead of three by two as then it will look more filled up and the viewer will be able to see more of the sports that the models are able to do. I could also add some manual techniques to the photographs to add more interest and texture to the work. These manual techniques could include: stitch, adding coloured paper, cutting and separating the images and overlapping/combining images. My possible idea research helped me with this idea as I took the same layout of the image on the right hand side of the page and the way that the paper was layered out in the image on the top right hand corner of the research page. This is because I like the idea of the way the photographs were laid out in the example as it enabled the photographer to show the model and also their personality by including the other photos. I also took the idea of the concertina paper as i like they way the when you look one way, the viewer is able to see one side of the piece and then when looking the other way, the viewer is able to see the other half of the piece. This means the piece can be viewed from several different angles.
