Possible Idea 1:

This possible idea is an idea of how I could layout the photographs that I could use in my final piece. I like the way that this is layout as the large photographs, is a still photograph of my model, and then the smaller photographs are showing the viewers what sport my model is doing and the moves that she is able to perform. To improve this idea, I could make the piece more three dimensional as then it would be more interesting to look at as you will be able to look at it from several different directions/angles. I could also possibly mount some of the smaller photographs on to foam board so that there are different levels/layers to the piece, To the photographs, that I have used in this possible idea, I could include some digital edits. This could then allow the piece to become more colourful and aesthetically pleasing to look at. My possible ideas research has helped me when making this idea as the photograph that is on the right hand side of the research page, heavily influences this idea. This is because I have taken the same style of the layout but adapted it by using my own photographs. With this possible idea, I feel that this piece is slightly boring and uninteresting due to the fact that the piece is two dimensional and the photographs have no manual or digital techniques added to them. By improving them in the ways that I have stated above, it will mean the original idea will be able to be developed into something some exciting and interesting to the viewer.

Possible idea 2:

This possible idea, is a three dimensional concertina piece. This means that the piece of paper used is folded inwards and then outwards to almost get a triangle shape/ spring type of structure. I like the way that this looks as firstly you are able to see a portrait of the model, which doesn’t tell/show the viewer much apart for what they look like, but then when pulling out the paper you are able to see what the model is capable of doing in terms of movements and sport. This may come as a shock to the viewer as they may not have been expecting to see something like that and so this ideas also has the element of surprise to it. To improve this idea, I could make the piece on a bigger scale so that it is able to stand up and be viewed from many different angles. Due to the piece being made on a bigger scale, I could add several more photographs and possibly have a third model that is doing another type of sport as this could then show a contrast between the three different types of sport that can be played by three different types of people. My possible idea’s research helped my to think of this idea, as I was interested in the way the paper was folded in the top left picture on the page and so I wanted to re-created that idea in my own way. I also really liked the way that the photographs were laid out and so I consider this when making my idea. This idea is a development of possible idea one, as I have taken the idea of how I have laid out the photos, but I have mounted them on to a three dimensional piece to add move interest and movement.

Possible idea 3:

This possible idea, is a development of my possible idea two. This is because I have now taken the improvements from possible idea two and applied them to this idea. This possible idea is now a large concertina piece that is able to stand alone. This Idea can be viewed from both the left and right. I think that this is effective as when looking from the right hand side, the viewer will only be able to see the portrait pictures of my models, but when looking from the left hand side, you are able to see the movements and sports that the model is able to do. To improve this idea, I could add some more smaller photographs so that it becomes a four by three instead of three by two as then it will look more filled up and the viewer will be able to see more of the sports that the models are able to do. I could also add some manual techniques to the photographs to add more interest and texture to the work. These manual techniques could include: stitch, adding coloured paper, cutting and separating the images and overlapping/combining images. My possible idea research helped me with this idea as I took the same layout of the image on the right hand side of the page and the way that the paper was layered out in the image on the top right hand corner of the research page. This is because I like the idea of the way the photographs were laid out in the example as it enabled the photographer to show the model and also their personality by including the other photos. I also took the idea of the concertina paper as i like they way the when you look one way, the viewer is able to see one side of the piece and then when looking the other way, the viewer is able to see the other half of the piece. This means the piece can be viewed from several different angles.

Evaluation:

1. Firstly I made the structure for my final piece, by glueing together several A3 pieces of paper and folding them in half to get the concertina effect. I then drew the backgrounds of the photographs by using fine liners and waster to get the faded effect. I also used a hypotrochoids stencil on one section.

4. With these smaller images, I have also applied some manual techniques before they were stuck down. These manual techniques include: sewing, splicing the photo and cutting away areas of the photographs.

2. Here I have added the large A4 photographs to the opposite side to the drawings. Before glueing the large photographs to the concertina structure, I zig zag stitched all the way around the text sections on all three photographs.

4. I then stuck down all the smaller photographs onto the page opposite the larger one. When sticking them down, I have alternately stuck the photos down on foam board.

6. To the other smaller photographs in this section, I have also applied several manual techniques to the photographs. These manual techniques include: scratching, hand sewing and drawing on top of the photographs.

7. Here I have stuck down all the smaller photographs in the same layout as the ones before. I have also stuck some of the photographs on to foam board to create different heights.

3. Here I have started to apply some manual edits to a few of the smaller photographs. These manual edits include: sticking coloured paper to one photo, using the sewing machine and doing some hand sewing.

5. Here I have started the second section of my final piece. I have started to apply manual techniques to some of the smaller photographs of my model skateboarding. These techniques include: hand sewing, and layering

8. Here i have started the third section of my final piece. With these smaller photographs, I have again applied some manual techniques to the photos. These include: hand stitching.

9. These are the rest of the smaller photographs that I used on this section of my final piece. On these photographs I have applied manual techniques, these are: drawing on to the photos, and sticking piece of coloured paper on to the photos

10. This is what the final section of my final piece looks like. Again I have stuck down the photographs in the same layout and have put some of them on to foam board to create different heights and layers.

11. The very last stage to making my final piece was to re-fold the concertina structure to be able to get a nice crisp fold and then put it into the frame. When inserting my final piece into the frame, I glued the two end sections in to the frame and then at each fold that touch the back of the frame, I hot glue gunned it to the back to keep it in place.

Final Evaluation: AO1: I began to explore my chosen question (relationships) by starting to look into several artists on Pinterest. The artist that I have look into are: Elinor Carucci, Tina Barney, Hans-Christian Schink, Ed Ruscha, David Spero, Joel Strenfield, Richard Billingham, Piet Mondrain, Steven Pippin, Doug Aitken, Mert and Marcus and Edward Steichen. These artist all look into the theme of relationships but all in different ways and so this was able to help me to generate different ideas to be able to go and take photographs of my own to create a mind map of different ideas based around the theme of relationships. I was then able to further develop by looking in to different artists and making my own photo shoots based on my own ideas of relationships. My own ideas began to emerge due to researching different artist that then develop my ideas on relationships to looking into the idea of contrasting the difference between old and new. This idea came from researching the artist Julia Margret Cameron. My ideas for showing relationships started to change when taking more photographs based around any type of relationship. This is because I started to take photographs of my model with objects that relate to him and one of these objects happened to be a skateboard. When taking the photographs of my model on his skateboard I found that the photographs were very effective and so I started to take photographs of people and the sport that they are related to. From my initial researches, which were my mind map and my artist research on Francesca Woodman and Julia Margret Cameron, my ideas on relationships started to develop into showing the contrast and relationship between old and new. This is because Cameron’s work really inspired me to take photographs that were like the old fashioned ones that she has done, and edit them to make them become a lot more up-to-date and modern with our day and age. After this idea, I started to research into more and found that I became more interested in the relationships that can be shown through people and objects. In this project, the artists that I research were: Francesca Woodman, Julia Margret Cameron, Ed Ruscha, Harold Edgerton and I also research Sporting campaigns. These artists all relate to my chosen question, as I believe that these artists are all able to communicate the idea of relationship through their work in several different ways. With these artists, I research them by finding out about their life history, the work that they do, and what inspired them to when doing their photography. I also analysed their work and stated what I like most about it and why it has inspired me with the development of my work. The artists that I have studied are important to the development of my work, as by researching into several different artists that explore the theme of relationships in different ways, it has enabled me to refine my ideas and focus on one theme within relationships, which is the relationship between people and sport. This as been important in my project, as it has helped me to seen what I am interested in most, within this theme, and what works well in my photography. The artist/research that I was most influenced by were: Harold Edgerton and researching about sporting campaigns. This is because in Edgerton’s work I was really inspired by the movement that was shown thought out his work and with the sporting campaigns, I was influenced by the overall look of the photographs. This is because they are able to give a message to the viewers and also be very aesthetically pleasing for the viewer to look at. AO2 Within this project, I have carried out a wide range of manual and digital techniques with my photographs. Some of these techniques will include: the use of different camera settings, using Camera Raw, using Photoshop, manual changing the photographs and using stitch. I have done this as I want to be able to see what techniques works best with the photographs that I am taking and when doing photo shoot I want to be able to know what camera settings I will need to be using to create the best photographs possible. When taking my photographs, I have often used a verity of slower shutter speeds to be able to see the movement being carried out in the photographs. I believe that the look that these photographs creates link in with the work of Harold Edgerton as he takes photographs that also show movements that are happening when taking the photographs. When editing the photographs on Photoshop or Camera Raw, I would sometimes look the colours that the artist has used and try and mimic this. For example: Ed Ruscha’s work is always in black and white and so when taking photographs like he did, I edited one of my photographs black and white to show the similarities. My experiments have helped me to develop my own ideas, as after editing several different photographs, I was able to see what I think worked best with the type of photographs that I have taken. It has also helped me to see what it is like when doing things manually to the photographs, as it will add texture and layers to the photographs. This is then more interesting to the viewers as they are able to feel this difference in the photographs and be able to see a more three dimensional piece.

AO3 My ideas are relevant to my final piece, as my ideas are able to show my thought process on how I came to find the inspiration for my final piece. My ideas also make my final piece have more meaning and relevance when looking at it as the viewer will have a better understanding of why and what I have photographed. With the work that I have produced, has continually been developed through the use of research and photo shoots and re shoots. Due to the development, I think that I have been able to produce work that is well refined and shows a clear link to the main theme of relationships. I selected my chosen idea due to the way that photo shoot 1 looked. This is because after editing the photographs I really liked the way that the photographs had come out and so I then started to make re-shoots of the photo shoot and further develop the idea of people and sports by researching into the artist Harold Edgerton, who take photographs of people doing sports, and I also research about sporting campaigns as I felt that the photographs that I had taken shoed a clear similarity to the images used in the sporting campaigns. AO4 In my final piece, I was hoping to create a three dimensional piece that what able to be seen from three angles, these were from the left, right and straight on. Also be looking at the piece from different angles, I wanted the viewer to see different things. I also wanted my final piece to have both manual and digital techniques, and consist of three different people with three different relationships between the sports that they do. I think that my final piece has worked in all the ways that I wanted it too as it meets all the criteria’s that I wanted it to. When making my final piece, my ideas started to evolve even more. This is because I started to think of ways that I could further improve the look of my final piece. Due to this I had the idea of placing my three dimensional piece in a frame and include several more smaller photographs on my piece. The most important influence on my final piece was: my research on Harold Edgerton and the sporting campaigns. I was also heavily influenced by my possible ideas research that I was found on PInterest. This is because this was were I goy my ideas for a concertinaed piece with the photographs laid out in the form of one large photographs and then several small photographs next to it. I think that my work reflects me as a photographer as the sporting theme shows my interests as a person due to the fact that I do several sports of my own. I also think that that why that the photographs have been taken and edit reflect me as there is firstly small hints of bright colours running through some of the photographs which show that I don’t like things to be bright and almost in the viewers face. I have also edited the photographs to show a lot of movement and this reflects me, as I like things to keep moving forward. I have also used a lot of stitch in my manual edits and this also reflects me as I am interested in making fashion and clothing and so I am used to using a sewing machine quite a lot.
