The idea of Crochet Savvy came from that inner peace when we see something so fabulous that we ask ourselves: “Why can’t I find a crochet magazine that strictly features trendy things that I ACTUALLY WOULD WEAR?” After hearing this a lot, we got together and joined our experience in crochet and web design to feature fabulous, trendy and modern crochet fashion online.

Crochet Savvy will grow and mature into a fabulous thing. Growing does not happen overnight and in the process we will run into trial and error and mistakes, we just ask you all to bear with us and continue your support and mentorship. Because we love when people email us and ask us to improve something or give us great ideas on how to make something better. You all are awesome!

The project has gotten great support from many people and what is totally awesome is the fact that it is now bringing awareness to the art of crochet from people who never even knew crocheting could be fashionable. Most of these people just thought it was for making granny square blankets or baby hats.

So, on behalf of Crochet Savvy Free Online Magazine, thank you all once again and enjoy the debut magazine which shows everyone what to expect from us. Each time we produce a magazine always expect to see the online content in a fabulous way. Once it goes into archive at the end of the seasons, the magazines While we respect the other crochet magazines that will still be available for download to all of our viewers are mainstream and feature many savvy designers, we once you have subscribed at the website. are choosing to mostly feature new and undiscovered designers or independent ones. In addition to this, the Crochet Savvy folks! magazine itself is strictly based on the online content of -KeTurah Ariel Malinconico the website blog/ezine itself. Founder/Editor-n-Chief

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

So the project makes an easy goal of gathering the masses online to pitch in with blog posts, videos and comments. We are also utilizing the social networks to get people involved. Crochet Savvy is not just my magazine, but what everyone can do to make the art of crochet savvy. Therefore, we at Crochet Savvy would like to thank all the sponsors and advertisers, designers and volunteers who have been helping out online. Without you, the magazine debut could not happen. I personally would also like to thank all the people who have been emailing us and telling us how much you are supporting us and advertising us to friends, family and customers by word of mouth. And just to let you know your impact, the very first week we started to advertise in April we got 381 subscribers to the website. And that was when the launch page was up before May 1st. Since then we have 612 subscribers and 10 featured designer sign ups as well as 30 advertisers for the website. These stats may seem big to you or small, but to us, no matter if it was 10 subscribers or 1,000, we feel loved and we know that

Reviews & Recommends Urban Edge: 2012 Spring Favorite Pick! When we found out about designer Shannon MullettBowlsby’s new book, we just had to buy it. We ended up buying 3 copies! This is the 2012 Spring fav of Crochet Savvy, hands-down. It is fun, trendy and you actually can wear it. Some books only focus on scarves or hats and small crocheted items. You mostly see knitted fashion as well. This book shows us all that you can actually take crochet and form it into fashionable pieces that can be worn everyday. Some pieces are sexy, others are laid back, but the key is wearability. You can WEAR these designs. Our favorite pick from the book was the white and black tube-top NYC Dress Pattern. This design features motifs. Who else other than the great mind of Shannon Mullet-Bowlsby would take a classic and piece it together to make black and white so modern and savvy! $19.95 book or $9.95 digital download: www.leisurearts.com/products/urbanedge.html

CHARITYCROCHET

(Betsy Holbrook, Patrick Raymond, Jennifer Holbrook, Rebecca Raymond photo by Mark Holbrook)

PAT PAT’S HATS A young boy’s inspiration helps others The Story of Pat Pat’s Hats

On August 30, 2011 Betsy Holbrook received a call from her father that changed her life forever. The phone call delivered the unfortunate news that Patrick, her two-and-a-half year old nephew, had been brought to the emergency room at Yale-New Haven Children’s Hospital following his complaints of a “boo-boo in his head”. After some initial testing and an MRI, they discovered 3 masses on his brain. Betsy works in Boston, several hours away, and was unable to immediately drive home to be with her sister, Rebecca,

Patrick’s mother. She did what any crafter would do in such a crisis and cast on a hat for her nephew, knowing that he would need one after brain surgery. The next day, following 10 hours of surgery, the pathology report brought news that the tumors were in fact malignant, and the diagnosis was Desmoplastic Medulloblastoma. After many tears, she cast on another hat. When she was finally able to get to New Haven to see Patrick in the PICU, she realized that one of the hats that she had made was far

When we crochet, it seems that the pain begins to hurt us quicker than knitting. This is normally because of tight tension when working in the stitches. Therefore we need to love on our hands and keep them safe, One way to do this is by stretching each finger and doing hand rotations. Here are other ways to massage the hands before and after crocheting: Hand Massage With the thumb of the left hand, massage the palm of the right hand. At the same time, wrap the fingers of the left hand round the outside of the right hand and massage. Massage for one minute. Repeat with opposite hand. Clench and Fan Clench your hand into a tight fist and hold for five seconds. Release smoothly, extending the thumb and fingers into a fully stretched position and hold for five seconds. Repeat five times for each hand.

CROCHETSAVVY LATE SPRING 2012

Tips for Your Hands Keeping your hands safe

Thumb Stretch With the left hand, gently pull the thumb of the right hand away from the thumb and down toward the forearm. Hold for five seconds. You should feel the stretch in the base of the thumb, palm side. Repeat for the left thumb. Five repetitions, alternate thumbs. Wrist Stretch Hold the right hand in front of the body, palm facing out, fingertips up, fingers together. With the left hand, grasp the right hand's outstretched fingers and gently pull the fingers back toward the body. Hold for five seconds. You should feel the stretch in the wrist area. Repeat for the left wrist. Five repetitions, alternative wrists. Wrist Circles With hands in front of the body and elbows held at a comfortable angle, gently rotate the wrists. Five repetitions in each direction.

FEATUREDDESIGNERS

Lenore BerryZaragosa

My late grandmother Louise Couture was an avid crocheter after she retired from 32 years in the education field. I knew her as the

retired crocheter. She crocheted sweaters, hats, scarves, afghans. All she needed to hear was who was getting married or having a baby. She followed countless patterns. She and I latch hooked together at times during my childhood summers with her. After high school graduation, I had no idea what career I wanted to do secularly. Back then I could not say I wanted to be a professional crocheter. There was no internet nor handmade selling venues at the time in 1989. Then in 2001 I got a job a in a fabric store and worked in the home decorating department. I was good at helping customers find the perfect color coordination for their living spaces.

Lots of inspirations came from the customers. One customer sewed and sold her creations on Ebay. "I can do that," I thought. So I did. I sewed pillows and sewed some clothes. I learned to find people did love my work, for next to nothing. There were seasonal local craft fairs and shows, but they were too expensive. I wanted to do this more regularly. My crochet hats and patterns for women have the innocence of strawberry with the effect of couture. I offer handmade twisted crochet couture hats for women that flatters all sizes made from soft acrylic, cotton, or wool yarn. My crochet couture hats fit and flatter all head shapes and sizes.
