A ✿✿A LIKELY STORY For likely I suppose, you could read lacey. It must be the time of year, when a young man’s fancy turns to the flowing movement of lace fabrics. It does depend of course, on what it is likely to wear with them; velvet jackets and breaches, knickerbocker breaches in fact. Any road up, here we have a little selection of laces. a) Ross - 135cm polyester lace in cream, a pale cream with an open knit pattern into which at 6cm intervals in a line of slight brushing; which is a little bit different and rather nice. You really can see floppy cloths, protruding from a velvet jacket in this one. £5.50 per metre b) Verity - Another cream lace, this time 145cm wide slightly heavier and more of a “grandma” lace than what has gone before it. This will do anything from a panel to light furnishing and has a slightly thicker feel; although I don’t think it has any more weight than the previous two. The pattern is in a series of stripes with the fancy lace pattern varying in the stripes and between them. Tea and biscuits, anyone? £5.50 per metre c) Elizabeth - 110cm wide polyester lace in a fairly vibrant shade of deep lime green, probably quite a delicate, but not to small floral knit pattern. £5.50 per metre Photo on back cover. d) Demelza - 130cm wide softer and slightly heavier “shawl” sort of polyester lace, which would be well at home in period productions or
something to throw around your shoulders when you are feeling sorry for yourself and lying in bed when not knowing what is that matter with you. Snap out of it and get on with it. £6.00 per metre. Photo on back cover. e) Prudie - 130cm cotton polyester lace in oatmeal with a fair amount of slubbiness knitted into parts of the cloth which have a heavier concentration of yarn ie in a stripe pattern, the rest of the cloth is a fairly open knit affair. There is a nice soft but knobbly sort of feeling to it, the stripes are sensibly placed at 2 inch intervals with an inch wide band of heavier knit in between. £6.00 per metre REF: CM1227

Not a flat grey, but a grey that has been besmirched with tiny wisps of a paler grey and in fact when you look on the reverse of the cloth; you can see that there are other colours that have made up this cloth. 150cm wide Yorkshire woollen suiting, made for men’s jackets, for a very larney organisation. These two cloths, both the same design, but in different colourways would have gone into jackets. The design is a birdseye check with a very faint over-check in pale blue. One colour-way is browner than the other, but they are both of a brown ilk. a) Has a tiny little bit of an orangey flavour to it. b) Has a lemony sort of flavour. Simply because there are lemon yarns in one and orangey yarns in the other. Unbelievably soft, and very county. REF: CM1227 WIDTH: 59”/150cm

✿✿ BARVENCE 150cm wide fine polyester georgette with a floral design in orange, cerise, vermillion and green on a green and turquoise large fern-like leaf pattern. So it is one design on top of another and the whole cloth is covered in design, and I suppose the most outstanding colours are green and vermillion. Perfect for floaty garments. ✿✿BAYOU 154cm wide fabulously woven, striped cotton twill trousering. I wouldn’t have to be a lot younger, to have a pair of shorts made out of this. In fact I know a man, who would make them for me. But by the time I get round to it, he would have bought it all, I am convinced. The stripes are in two shades of green, black, cerise, white and a colour described variously as honey and corn. The stripes are mostly different widths, and none more than narrow. So you would never have to worry about what to match it with, it would go with every colour you could think of. Cushions maybe? ✿✿BOLEYN Having recently watched Wolf Hall and noted amongst other things, the heaving bosom of Ann Boleyn particularly, when she got her tucker up. This 150cm, almost, wide cotton shirting is in an abundant white chambray weave with faint darker pinstripe at very small intervals down the cloth. It also has a faint element of seersucker, in some ways it is fine and delicate, but in others it has a little bit of the gypsy about it. Which to me, gives it plenty of clothing options. ✿✿DYNASTY 150cm wide soft polyester twill cloth with 3% elastane in cream with a large, sprawling floral design in different shades of blue. I’ve seen similar cloth in jackets, in more than an odd television production. It is a beautiful looking cloth, and being made of what it is, it’s an easy care cloth too. Wonderful draping qualities. ✿✿DEMOCRACY 150cm wide wool, linen and silk suiting in black. Sorry I can’t be too specific about the actual percentages of each of the fibres; but the cloth does have a quite soft, silky feel to it – and I would suggest that the silk content is not more the 25% with the wool and the linen being split equally. E ✿✿ETCHINGS 60% poly/ 40% cotton Italian made blouse cloth with an all over floral outline pink print which includes areas that have not received any print at all and looks as though it has been etched. This has brought about by a chemical process which actually makes the cloth a bit thinner in the areas where this occurs. Very clever and nice cloth. Made for a top maker. You may recall that is a saying that a bit of a hero of mine, John Denver, used to say whenever he found something amazing or outside his grasp. This cloth would have the same effect on him I’m sure. It is 150cm wide burnt orange, although some may have a disagreement about that, cotton dress velvet. In fact, you might just disregard that, it is almost a moleskin, because it has actually been raised than not chopped, but it has arrived here as a dress velvet. 150cm wide heavy cotton cloth with a ribbed, rope-like stripe at quarter inch intervals all down the cloth. It has been softened by a very light sanding; and so it is soft and it’s strong. I have a feeling that this could have been used as a lightweight furnishing, however you would never have had to sit on it. And certainly not in your overalls. It comprises of brown, beige, grey-black and yellow yarns; carefully interwoven but forming a small wiggly line check which is in black. ✿✿KIAWAH 150cm wide cotton twill cloth, with a sort of cross between desert storm and traditional army camouflage pattern. That is to say it is a similar pattern to normal, but the colours are subdued. Not dissimilar the cloth from which the captain of the Kiawah Island rider cup team wore a few years ago. And although, the US won on that particular occasion. The man himself made a right fool from himself, particularly so, because he was small enough to be used as a mascot. Very sturdy cloth indeed. 150cm wide ‘cupro’ cloth which is a chemically produced cloth I think it all used to be cuprammonium acetate or something - this is a derivative of that in that it certainly has some polyester in it. To paraphrase a song from West Side Story, this is the most beautifully fine cloth I have ever clapped eyes on. That isn’t to say the design is all that beautiful, the cloth is 70% cotton, 30% silk and incredibly fine. There must be 30 – 40 metres on this little bolt I’ve got in my hand and you can flick it about with a finger. It isn’t diaphanous but it’s fairly see-through. It’s a splodgy sort of floral print in shades of blue, brown and cream. I don’t think you can make a finer cloth than this. REF: CM1246 WIDTH: 55”/140cm

60” wide superb quality 97% cotton, 3% lycra printed medium/heavy weight jersey in the faintest of rib knits it comes in the following colours. Shawn the Sheep – ( see what we did there?) Set on a blue base, these sheep admittedly look a little bit confused. I suppose that might be because some of them are upside down while others are just a bit slanted. Pyjama bottoms? a) blue Dino – Roar - the dinosaurs come in green, yellow and orange and all seem to be very friendly - none of those scary Jurassic Park ones here. b) blue – as red but with blue ground c) red

I think it all started out as a dark navy suiting and somebody decided to be clever and dyed the other side black, which gives you reversible option. a) Millie club 147cm wide, lightweight cotton drill trouser/skirt fabric. Ideally suited to smaller person’s garments I would think, in a quite fine variegated stripe in red, pink, lilac, and white. ...With the sounds of people who are wishing they had never gone up in the first place. This is a 160cm wide cotton, very fine, grey toned weave shirting in either pale blue or pink with the absolute finest of white horizontal stripe weaves. Almost a chambray but heavier. I can remember this sort of stuff being woven on Lancashire looms a hundred years ago bit of exaggeration there, to make a point. And it used to have hundreds of faults in it because the weave was so fine and the yarn kept breaking. Which in turn made it expensive, because somebody had to pay for all the faults. 150cm wide plain polyester twill in a very pale grey. You might think that ought to be the end of it, but it’s not. It’s not any old polyester twill; this is rather special, rather nice and beautifully finished with softest hand imaginable. It represents the best development in this type of cloth, for many a long day. Made as a dress cloth, but it has many uses.

✿✿WATERLOO Somebody must have been clutching at straws when they thought of that name, because as we know, Waterloo is in Belgium and this cloth is Italian. Made in what I believe to be cotton, viscose and silk in an abstract palm-fromed sort of design in a pale mushroom with darker mushroom markings. I am as sure as I can be that this is a furnishing cloth, but would certainly make beautiful shawls and wraps, and that sort of things. ✿✿WHEN WILL I BE FAMOUS? 140cm wide suiting, in a quite wild assortment of fibres including cotton, acrylic, polyester, viscose and a dash of silk. It says on the tin that it is a lemon boucle, there is not a lot of need to expand on that, except to say there are not only lemon yarns in it, there are white, pale blue and silver.
