A This 146cm wide very fine polyester georgette has a fairly large goth like floral abstract print in dark autumn colours of rust, blue, turquoise and brown on a black background. Very intriguing to say the least. £6.00 per metre

✿✿BIECK 150cm wide 97% cotton 3% elastane stretch, lightweight trousering in a double border jungley sort of print in greens, brown, beiges, lime and black on the main body and then the 20cm borders in purple, lime and black and to round it all off a 4cm black band stripe on either edge.

There’s just a chance that it was made for trousers, whatever you decide it will be fairly exotic.

✿✿BLUSH I’m not so sure you would like to blush this particular colour but as long as you didn’t overdo it I suppose you avoid looking like Nefertiti. So what is it, it’s 150cm wide 100% Italian cotton lawn in a dark rose pink, very delicate woven fancy, different sorts of stripes in lime, dark turquoise and paler pink. There’s an awful lot of work gone into this.

✿✿BRIDGETTE a) Looking For The Right One – 145cm wide fairly fine cotton lightweight printed denim shirting/dress fabric in a pale blue with an all over dull but pretty white daisy floral like print. Dull because this is a discharge print, so the blue dye of the denim is taken away, rather than white being printed on top of it. It makes for a more expensive finish. So the overall effect is subdued but rather a nice cloth with a good hand and drapes well.

b) Printemps – Should you happen to visit Provence in Spring time, you may well see lots of these flowers on the wayside and on the verges of fields. Tiny and very colourful, small flowers in reds, yellows, green, blue all on a pale denim blue background. The cloth itself is 100% cotton, and is quite full of the joys of Spring.

✿✿CELEBRATION a) Carnival – 150cm wide printed cotton lawn in an abstract petal design, no flowers just petals, almost like a carpet that you might find after ticatape style celebration, as colourful as you can imagine but I hasten to add there no green so non the less of that I suppose. b) A day at the races – 145cm wide cotton lawn with the most wonderful"arty” floral print in yellows, mustard, dark brown, blue, a few shades of pink and fine black line outlining of the flowers. The flowers are reasonably large but not too large but that doesn’t mean a great deal does it, large to some people isn’t large to others but to me they’re perfect, it’s all on a white ground so it’s a very bright and airy cloth.

✿✿COMFORT ZONE 98% wool, 2% elastane soft flannel suiting made for Hugo Boss, it comes in a warm pale grey made up of many shades and tones of yarn giving it a slightly marled appearance.

✿✿CRUISE – TABLE LINEN Have you ever won a cruise holiday, have you ever been on one. If you haven’t we have the very thing for you. Its 140cm wide off white cotton table linen cloth with a 20cm woven overhang at each side into which at fairly regular intervals are the words Kruse and vask and it’s all in off white. Could this be from a Baltic government punishing exercise or something that dates back to the cold war era. I don’t imagine it can be used for much else other than table cloths or perhaps napkins but it is a very stamped, beautifully made cloth.

✿✿DAYS OF YORE Back in the good old days when I didn’t have to remember too much, I recall having a cloth very similar to the one that I am now about to tell you about, I thought it was incredible then and I think it still is today, it’s not the same cloth I add but it is from the same factory. There’s only 10 or 15 years between the two but this particular Italian mill produces fine cotton trouserings to this day. It comes in either a) Blue

b) Pink

It is described as fine gabardine on the ticket and I have no reason to disbelieve that. 100% cotton with enough fine yarn in it to give it a lovely smooth surface.

A 150 cm wide polyester dress whose base is ivory, with an extremely colourful if perhaps a tad old fashion floral design in lots of rich reds, mustards, greens, little bit of taupe and some black in the flower heads.

All of which is on a cloth which isn’t just plain, it does have a very fine chain stitch at centimetre intervals all through the cloth. An afternoon tea party sort of cloth. It has a wonderful none polyester sort of feel really, and has lots of draping qualities and is virtually creaseless.

H ✿✿HANDMADE AND RAW 127cm wide handmade silk, not a soft silky dress silk but a slightly coarser suiting cloth that looks like linen. a) Pink – it comes in what is described as red but it can’t possibly be so, there is red in it, only a light red but lots of oatmeal and cream yarns.

Overall it is pink. b) Tweed – Is slightly coarser and has the look of a very fine tweed.

✿✿FINEST a) Bliss – 146cm wide absolutely fantastic white cotton voile, butter soft with loads of the finest yarns imaginable.

Incidentally on the label it says machine made, hand woven in India.

They obviously hadn’t enough of the handmade labels to go round.

b) M White – 140cm wide fine slightly crepey cotton muslin, another cloth with an inordinate amount of very fine yarn in it.

✿✿LINEN Two 150cm wide 100% Irish linen in either a lovely taupe or black. We all know the ups and downsides of linen but this is a very, very nice cloth.

✿✿LIBERTY JERSEY ROYAL A 145cm wide very fine but not insubstantial double mercerised cotton jersey in a completely all over ‘William Morris’ design with flowers and abstract fronds covering everything in shades of blue with off white and deep red flower centres. A lovely cloth and a heck of a design. I’ve just noticed the label sticking out the end of the roll and the word ‘Liberty’ emblazoned upon it. So there is every chance you have seen this design elsewhere.

✿✿PERFORMANCE There’s a lot of store these days set aside for performance, you absolutely have to have all the right gear for every different sort of performance your about to give, now one can understand this if its on stage but on a wet Friday night pounding the streets of wherever, why on earth would you need a different performance fabric than the one that you might use on the Saturday morning when you are going to watch your children play whatever game it is they are going to play. There are the kids Saturday morning pounding away through all manner of detritus whilst the parents or guardians stand by in their hunter wellies, Barbour coats and hats under cover. We have one or two of these fabrics here, not of the stretchy but breathable water repellent, even waterproof variety, a) Peachskin – Is 140cm wide polyester performance cloth with good water repellency with a lightly sanded peachskin finish on both sides, if I haven’t said so it’s navy. b) Cover up – A very different sort of performance fabric here in that its two cloths in one, the outer one is a royal blue polyester canvas and the inner cloth is a silver grey fairly plain woven polyester, it’s completely water repellent and is outstandingly rugged. c) Military - Olive – This is a completely different in that its only 130cm wide but it really is a cloth and a half is very water resistant and is the sort of polyester canvas you could make anything from jackets, to bags, outdoor furniture protection, truly great cloth.

Cagoule – 140cm wide gorgeous blue fine featherweight breathable very water repellent polyester. It comes in: d) Rich Royal

e) Black

Jacket – 142cm wide proofed polyester durable and very water repellent jacketing, could be used for bags too. It comes in: f) Navy

g) Teal Blue

h) Summer jacket – this is not as water repellent as the others but it still does repel water and has a nice texture giving it a softer look and nice for casual summer jacket or gilet. It is narrower still at 120cm in a navy blue, and nice lightweight water repellent polyester cloth.

✿✿RIVER DANCE 159cm wide 75% cotton 25% linen dress weight brushed cloth in black, the weight itself would lend itself to floppy skirts and trousers and of course the little skirts that the Irish dancers wear. It is an Italian cloth made with a very famous name in what used to be only men’s fashion but now ladies fashion as well and if you ask who it is I’ve no doubt well tell you, then you can embroidery the name on yourself. You, may well say that but I couldn’t possibly comment.

114cm wide very fine polyester dress cloth in navy blue, nice and soft but still has a little bit of an edge to the finish, which will certainly help with the making up of the stuff. It is similar in weight to a georgette but there is a texture that makes it that little bit more special. Make a blouse or a dress.

These three cloths are all the same basic fabric, the patterns are all different. The cloth is 130cm wide polyester, elastane, heavy jersey scuba which I’m sure is suitable for maybe even swimwear certainly leotards.

There’s nothing worse I think than getting your cossie wet and finding that it hasn’t got the right kind of grip and finishing up siding too low top and bottom, funny to look at but a disaster to wear. a) Polynesia – is a glorious all over Polynesian floral print in colours typical of that part of the world, Van Gogh could not have done better.

✿✿SAYONARA 145cm wide fine woven, silky soft, polyester digitally printed satin dress fabrics in the following rather splendid little range of colours and designs:

b) South Sea Island – Another south sea Island design but this time in blues, pinks, a hint of mustard, lilac and a hint of grey.

1) Don’t Wait Up – Is in black with a fairly large multi floral design in white, red, green, pale lemon, deep yellow, tints of brown and beige and lovely shades of green.

c) Tahiti – Imagine snorkelling in tropical waters seeing the sun shine through the water and reflect on all beautiful floral plants on the sea bed, if you can’t imagine that don’t worry I’ve not seen it either but I can imagine how beautiful it looks, trust me I’m a cloth salesman.

The colours involved are just rich and gorgeous and typical of the sort of thing I’m sure you would see.

2) Wild One – Is in white with an all over slightly smaller and more delicate floral pattern in pinks, peach, damson, green, pale orange and several shades of green in the foliage.

3) Let’s Frolick – Is in white with a very different floral design, this time in purple, cerise, pink, pale orange, deep blue , pale grey, green & some brown.

4) The Face That Launched – A fairly large and fairly oriental floral design in pink, cerise and brown and tints and shades of those colours in a fairly large floral pattern on a darkish cream background.

The cloth is fairly substantial but not too heavy and has got the most vibrantly colourful print you will ever clap eyes on. The design could be one of a lot of men’s ties all hung up one way and/or the other next to each other. They could be reflections of bottles on a bar, or just elements of someone’s imagination that has had a drop to much of the good life. Absolute madness but glorious all the same.

✿✿WHAT ‘AVE WE ‘ERE? A 150cm wide 60% rayon, 30% polyester, 10% linen finely knitted lightweight soft silky dress fabric in a sort of oat meal/cream selfcoloured design. Could be flower heads flattened or it could be images of craters on the moon. They are in rows, about 20cm apart and about 5cm in diameter. There is a bit of fleckiness in the yarns, which add a bit of character and adds to what is a rather different cloth.
