✿✿A BLAST FROM THE PAST 147cm wide two cloths in one jacketing, both cloths are cotton which are bonded together by a membrane between the two giving an almost water proof fabric. There is an inherent stiffness in the fabric but not too much. This cloth will have been superseded by ones of a knitted variety giving less weight and more stretch, it is navy on one side and a pale but not too pale blue on the other. ✿✿ARE WE OUT OF THE WOODS YET I happened to be singing along to Taylor Swifts latest single when I picked up this cloth, crikey it is a catchy tune but then she appears to be rather adept at that, rather fitting that I saw this wonderful digitally printed polyester 'wool touch' dress fabric lurking in the corner. It comes in a very sophisticated palate and looks like a scene from the woods. The wool touch means that it is not a slippery polyester dress fabric and will be good to sew. ✿✿A FAVOURITE OF MANY PEOPLE I’M TOLD Last year we had a good range of crepe fabrics bought from a business that shutdown - sadly we only have one left, the French navy later in the catalogue. However, we do have these 155cm wide polyester triple crepe skirt/suit/anything fabrics in three absolutely fabulous shades, black, turquoise or bright coral. The later can be worn with any colour as long as it is black or white. Why not mix them up, of an unsurpassable quality. Not from a business gone bust hence the price. a) Bright Coral

This is a 137cm wide pure silk Liberty shirting fabric which is somewhere between a georgette and a crepe de chine and is printed in a totally all over floral design I lots of autumny shades of purple, rust, many shades of brown, mustard and a hint of cream here and there. ✿✿A LIKELY STORY This 140cm wide loose knit, loose top over cloth comes in a very mottled grey and white made from polyester, with a beautiful soft hand; you would certainly be fooled into thinking this was a cotton. ✿✿A LIKELY TALE This is another, unusual it has to be said, Ralph Lauren fabric made of very fine cotton and linen yarns. It is printed in a denim blue, with an all over fish print and the fish aren’t too small either. I have no idea what type of fish they are, but there are other bits of fishy things and the evidence of swirling water, and this is all in oatmeal on the denim blue background. ✿✿AND NOW… This 140cm wide 70% polyester, 30% wool tracksuiting weight jersey comes in a design to fool all but the hardiest of animals. It might even be a good camouflage, except that the overall aspect of the cloth is of blues. Blues made up of blues, yellow, orange, cream, a hint of green and is like you might find if you saw a million twigs on the floor, all on top of each other. B ✿✿BE IMPRESSED 144cm wide digitally printed viscose dress fabric, now what is all that about? The pattern has been produced digitally, then printed on a machine. Whereas the patterns used to be longwinded and taking hours of an artist’s time, nowadays, you can obviously whack it into a computer programme, press a button and out comes a design. I know that’s simplifying it, but that is really what it amounts too. These cloths are certainly impressive. a) Spectrum - A light reflected through a prism design once again in as many colours as the rainbow has, and lots that it doesn’t. I am impressed. b) Fandango - 145cm wide digitally printed viscose dress cloth in a vivid red with an all over, multi-coloured, quite large floral and paisley print with some outlining in black. Just imagine that you’re in Italy and you’ve gone a quite narrow, cobbly sort of street and on either side there are two or three storey houses. What we would call terraced houses, but I’m sure the Italians have a different term, that I ought to look up and use, but as I am here at work I can’t look everything up. You might say ‘well look it up on the internet’ and I would say, ‘yes of course I will.’
Recently arrived this comes from a small collection of Italian made lightweight cotton chino trouserings made for a well-known British designer. Intended for menswear the colours are a bit of a giveaway; sadly we are missing my favourite lime shade, but my wife won't have to walk 10 metres behind me on our holiday this year. Not disappointment all round then! The cloth I’ll wager will not either.
In the meantime let’s use our imagination. We’ve walked down this street and come across a big oak door, with a smaller door within. And we go through, and we are in a court yard and the court yard is sheltered from the bright sunlight. There is a sort of trellis with the vine growing across it and there are flowers in big pots and the odd chair and bench where Madame would seek her favours.

This cloth epitomises all that’s right about such a situation. It’s an all over abstract print in lots of shades that the light shining through the trellis might give: deep greens, bit of black, splodges of rust and pink, pale lemon, deep kingfisher blue and turquoise. ✿✿BHUTAN This 150cm, 60% cotton 40% viscose ‘hand woven’ suiting is not dissimilar to something you might find worn in the foothills of the Himalayas or the Andes, or even Red Indians, prior to General Custer. It is woven, though not by hand, but really does have the look of a hand crafted article. There are many different aspects to this horizontal stripe weave; some extremely narrow, some a little bit broader and all have some intricacies woven into the stripes. Which are then bordered by even more intricate weaving. It is in the sort of colours that you would associate with the places I mentioned earlier. A truly fascinating fabric. In the past we have had cloths that were described as tropical weight woollen suitings, suitable for wear in the desert or any other hot climate I suppose. A 145cm wide wool/poly felt in a fairly outrageous, completely all over floral design in tones and shades of pink, cerise, turquoise, browns, orange, bit of black. Fabulous article to look at, it can only have been made for jackets as it is fairly rigid, but still supple enough to wear. I called it a felt, because I didn’t know what else to call it but it’s not the sort of felt you would associate with craft work or men’s caps of yesteryear. As John Denver used to say: far out. Whilst I’ve been laid low, with the accident that I had a little earlier in the year, which caused me to miss my annual golf pilgrimage to Portugal; which thanks to the modern way of communicating, I was reminded about on an almost daily basis from the rest of the lads; either on the golf course on in the bar. It was at this time I gained a holier than thou attitude to almost anyone that was enjoying themselves and my intake from the vine diminished virtually to nothing. I’m sure I was better for it, but I neither felt it, or thought it. So I have begun the long road back to regain my taste buds, and so far it has to be said, that I am enjoying it. It is a very fine blue viscose lawn dress fabric; with orange, pink, white and purple flowers all over it, and the slightest of green leaves and details in yellow. ✿✿MIGRAINE A 137cm wide soft flowing viscose dress fabric in a fairly extravagant, abstract print in lots of vivid purples, greens, splashes of vermillion, white, black, olive, sage, not to dissimilar to the patterns in a migraine but they tend to be black and white, don’t they. Last evening on some obscure television channel, were songs that I understood and indeed were able to sing along to, by the aforementioned group of singers. And at the time they were doing their singing, they were neither Mommas nor Pappas, but to blokes and to girls making rather pleasant noises. It was alleged that they had a somewhat darker side to them, which was difficult to discern from their appearance, but by gum, they were good. The cloth I have before me is a little bit of a mystery, suffice to say that is a 150cm wide polyester, cotton jersey in a reasonably formidable nature. One in a pink and white pattern, and one in a blue and white pattern but is neither fishing nor mending nets, so perhaps you would describe it as being all over abstract. ✿✿PUSSY CAT Many years, in the film What’s New Pussy Cat was one of the best lines ever delivered when Peter Sellers, as a Viking warrior says to his wife, who asks - when he is favouring other ladies - are they prettier than her? He remarked, he was prettier than her. At which point she bellowed and chased him around the castle. But that’s not the point of the exercise, it was to tell you about this cloth that the magnificent Peter O’Tool had a suit made of. Obviously not this particular cloth, it would be far to old; but a very similar type cloth. It is a pale beige lightly marbled, 67% poly/29% viscose/4% elastane suiting which will go on forever and still look as good as it does today. REF: 1632 WIDTH: 146cm/57"

This is a little range of viscose lycra jerseys, most fairly fine - nothing too heavy - and all patterned a) I Need Your Love - I am singing a lyric from Whitesnake, you know, the rock band; it can be hard thinking up names sometimes, forgive me I am a little tired. This is almost an animal skin sort of print in shades of cream, fawn, darker brown, and a hint of taupe/mushroom all on a black ground. b) Can You Handle It? - This fairly abstract print looks as though they weren’t quite ready and they hadn’t got all the ink, in all the places it should have been before they started. Which only adds to the mystery of the cloth, it could be as if everybody had their own a sort of stripe design, but each stripe is interfered with by abstract markings and spaces. The background I imagine would have been this off white/cream and then printed on top of with navy blue, turquoise, a few shades of pink, peach and almost very pale rust. Absolutely stunning. c) Bob On - This is a relatively simple all over white tiny little daisy print on a black background. d) Burnt Orange - A bold floral design in black on a burnt orange background. e) Midsummer Mystery - A fairly large blue and black floral design, on a cream and black ground which looks a little bit like you might observe very heavy rain through a window, where the rain is running down in rivulets, Midsummer Murders sort of mystery pattern. It seems to me hidden away in the gaudy complex design; are ships, aeroplanes, skyscrapers and reflections in water of some of those items. Some might say ‘what is he talking about?’ And I can only respond by saying I didn’t get where I am today by knowing what I am talking about. There is some kingfisher and darker green amongst the foliage. Glorious, glorious cloth. If that doesn’t bring joy, I don’t know what will. c) PPI - polyester stretch satin dress fabric, for some reason or other reminds me of red Indian head dresses with the addition of a few flowers and a little paisley print on top of it, or in it. Perhaps I’m seeing things that aren’t there… but then again, if I didn’t I wouldn’t be where I am today - in the asylum. Extremely sophisticated, they printed in black with off images of animal form print and then in the paisley a little pink flower then other all over black and white markings. And the design is an abstract criss-cross stripe running evenly through the cloth. As a follow of the absurd, I am drawn to Death in Paradise, which hasn’t improved it has to be said and seems to have been made so that actors from the UK can have a little bit of sunshine respite, while still hanging on to their BBC contracts. This viscose lycra jersey, reminds me very much of the island in that it is gorgeously colourful large Caribbean floral print in as many colours as there are in the rainbow. This 150cm wide quite heavy superb quality ponte roma polyester knitted suiting, for some reason or another, reminds me of a very old Volkswagen advert which featured a girl/lady in some sort of checked garment. I can’t be more specific, as I can’t remember; but I think it might have been something like this. This is a sort of dull might even say dirty-ish sort of white with a black square pattern forming 4cm squares. Very striking, and made of a cloth which will suit either tight or not so tight skirts. ✿✿THE COALMENS 150cm wide quite substantial but soft, 65% polyester 35% viscose lightweight coating in a very positive shade of English Mustard. Perhaps with the addition of a hint of green. ✿✿TO THE BEACH The following is a little list of beautifully printed dress cloths made in rayon, which as you may know is almost identical to viscose, they are made to imitate the finest cotton lawn a) Amalfi - An all over quite large floral print, in shades of blue, turquoise, white and black on a very pale grey trellis sort of background. b) St Barts - A white cloth with once again a fairly large, all over print - floral print - in cerise, pale orange, damson, shades of green, hints of peach and yellow. The flowers themselves are varied enough in size and type. d) Bermuda - This is a large multi-coloured floral design, on what I believe to be a very, very mint base cloth. There is no one colour to any of the one flowers, they’re all quite a serious mixture of lots of colours; which is fairly cleverly done. d) Hamptons – blue, white, black and aqua mosaic floral. One side is quite grey, the other side quite royal blue; the royal blue is more interesting as it has little bits of the grey showing though, where the royal blue does not show through on the other side.
