Issue 8 2010

‘Bout Further Ado’ During my whistle stop tour of the far flung capitals of the world as a man of cloth, not as a man of the cloth but as a man of fabric, I have seen I suppose as much as I want to see. We can innovate as much as we like but we don't seem to be able to do better than cotton and wool in however many forms we can disguise it. Which brings me to the story of the boll weevil. In fact I think there is a song about the boo weevil, and how it does and always will, eat the cotton plant. As of late it has apparently eaten most of it and as a result the price has rocketed, somebody no doubt will blame that on BP as well. Has our special relationship with America gone down the pan? Send in Prescott I say. We hope you have all summered well, no doubt those of you towards the south east corner of the country have summered in a warmer fashion than the rest of us and possibly in a drier fashion too. We have a hosepipe ban in our region and as they announced it the heavens opened and they have been doing it pretty much ever since, and we are now half way through August. Our new offices now have a well-worn look and are festooned with photographs of cloth, samples of cloth, lists of fabrics, computers, printers and a board for holidays, from which I am markedly absent. Caroline appears to have me absent on days I am sure I was here. Eart be, bout further ado lets get to cloth.

FA1 A cloth for all seasons 60in wide, polyester, light weight suiting in a grey marl, the overall effect being pale grey with surface interest which is part of the weave. A good weight, it drapes well and because it's polyester, can be chucked in the washing machine, tumbled dried and whatever else. I personally wouldn't put it in a tumble dryer but what do I know? £3.50 per mtr.

FA2 A bit one Sided 20cm wide self- adhesive Velcro, but only the hook side. Why this should be left when all the looped side has gone heaven only knows. Anyway there you go. If you can find a use for it let me know. 100mtrs white, there is also a small amount of black and beige. 25p per mtr.

to wear, it has a beautiful hand is very light and very wearable. £3.00 per mtr

FA5 Aquarius a)

60in wide, cotton lycra stretch, baby towelling in the palest green imaginable. £5.00 per mtr. b) 60in wide polyester polar fleece in pale green. £6.00 per mtr. These go together, they don't match in colour exactly but they are as near as damn it.

FA6 Arts for Art's Sake - Linen This is a 56in wide 100% percent linen in off white/cream with a big leafy pattern in dark grey, not too dark but dark enough. Very nice! £6.50 per mtr.

FA3 Aphrodite A little while ago Caroline went on a Hen do to Benaldmadena, this modern trend for stag and hen parties abroad seems daft to me. However not only did they travel far but also they had to have Pop star fancy dress for one of the nights. Caroline chose Kylie Minogue and the White outfit she made reminds me of Aphrodite. It is a very pure white 60in wide nylon lycra fabric, not see through except perhaps when wet but I'm not allowed to even think about things like that. We only have about 20mtrs so if you fancy yourself as a Greek goddess, do buy some. £6.00 per mtr.

FA7 Ahoy There 60in wide navy blue or emerald green and white striped twill on identical cloth to that in item 'Chef'. They are both very striking fabrics and are £4.50 per mtr.

FA8 Big Boy 60in wide, 98% cotton 2% lycra heavy denim with a traditional twill weave made up of dyed blue yarn and natural coloured yarns, which is how denim ought to made. £4.75 per mtr.

FA9 Bargain Bales FA4 A Fit of Pique 60 inch wide white poly/cotton woven pique, not used a great deal these days it has to be said, but nonetheless a lovely fabric

We have bales that consist of approximately 10mtrs of a varying range of fabrics we cannot say which. All fabrics are good, there is no rubbish and the pieces vary in width from 45in

1

- 60in and in length from 3/4 metre up to 2.5mtrs. No bigger than this. Some are expensive fabrics and therefore a real bargain.£10.00 per bale.

FA16 Black Wool Jacketing 60in wide black 100% lambswool soft twill weave jacketing: £10.00 per mtr.

FA17 Broderie Anglaise Dear Croft Millers We always love hearing your stories about what you are making with our fabrics. Please keep letting us know and please don't forget to let us know if you don't mind sharing your stories or pictures as we would love to post them on the website. Many Thanks Caroline.

Traditional 3 hole design Broderie Anglaise in white or cream. 45in wide. £3.00 per mtr.

FA18 Chambrayson 60in wide poly/cotton fine shirting in slate blue, which is made up of darker blue yarns in one direction and very pale blue yarns in the other, almost like a chambray, hence the title. A lovely hand. £2.50 per mtr.

FA19 Chambray

FA10 Bleu 60in wide, fine cotton / lycra, in navy blue with a reasonably sparse, tiny floral spray design in white. In between the sprays are tiny little circles all in white. French cloth made for an abundance of little girls garments. £4.50 per mtr.

FA11 Brief Stretch 54in wide, cotton/ lycra lightweight denim. We thought we would not have anymore of this cloth but an odd 50mtrs has turned up from where we always got it. It will definitely be the last. A fairly traditional denim blue, not as rich as the one described elsewhere, but a nice colour and a lovely cloth. £4.50 per mtr.

FA12 Bakers Dozen II 60in wide warm white I am advised, not cream, it's a very soft off white (no doubt one of the shades of white that Dulux make) plain weave, not twill weave, cotton with a touch of lycra and a lightly brushed back. A substantial fabric. £3.00 per mtr.

FA13 Backs to the Wall 64in wide 100% cotton looped back track suiting in navy. Substantial, but not too heavy and as rare as hen's teeth. Make the most of the odd 100mtrs that we have. £5.00 per mtr.

60in wide cotton rich poly/cotton chambray in either a) Aquamarine b) Pale Beige c) Dark Red It is of a weight which is sufficient to make trousers and skirts from but of course it will make quite heavy shirts too. I have a notion that this is a fabric that was woven not too many miles from here in a mill that I used to have an association with called Broughton's, if that's the case it's a treat because it no longer exists. I'm sure you know but I will mention it anyway; Chambrays are made up of a coloured warp and a white weft so each of the colours are described are not entirely plain or flat. A superior cloth. £4.50 per mtr.

FA20 Christmas Fabrics I know that you don't want to be reminded of dark nights and the attendant winter scenario but you will have to get a grip. Think of all the good things. 54in wide cotton Christmas designs. a) Red Holly - Red ground with green holly leaves mid scale. b) Green Holly - Green ground with darker green holly leaves with red berries and cream flowers - mid scale. c) Cream Holly - Cream ground with green holly and red berries mid scale. d) Father Christmas - Green with red Father Christmases. He is a good size and 9cm tall. e) Stars - Red with gold stars. Quite a large design. f) Check - Red with green and gold lurex tiny check. This unlike the others is actually a weave. All £5.50 per mtr.

FA14 Back to School Hard wearing serviceable fabric, fairly ordinary but having said that very well made. 60% polyester 40% viscose in a dull navy blue. 60in wide: £3.00 per mtr.

FA15 Braveheart Stretch 68 inch wide cotton/ Lycra lightweight red tartan sweatshirting. I did think at the time it was a T-shirting but it certainly isn't that, it is much too heavy for that obviously. Will make hoodies and garments of that ilk. It is two-way stretch and I am certain it will be exceptionally hard wearing. I don't know why that should be an added advantage but depending on the application it may well be: £4.00 per mtr.

2

FA21 Corduroy Two fine lightweight corduroys, corduroy can never be described as being a summer fabric but if any corduroy can then this can. Both are made to an exceptionally high standard. a) 60 inches wide in a very dark brown, in a very very fine cord indeed: £4.50 per mtr. b) 45 inches wide navy blue 98% cotton 2% Lycra: £4.00 per mtr.

FA22 Chintz 48in wide, very dark grey cotton dress fabric with an all over medium to large floral design in pink mustard and green. The

cloth then has been calendared, which means it's squeezed between rollers and has a fluid passed along the roller to give a semi shiny chintz finish. We haven't a lot because there wasn't a lot made but it is worth having at £4.50 per mtr.

FA23 Correction 50in wide, the reason for that I will explain later. This is 89% cotton 2% lycra shirting in bright baby pink. We have had this cloth before but I obviously made a bit of a mess telling you about it. It has at ½ inch intervals down the cloth a series of alternating woven satin stripes, 1 thicker, about 1/4in wide and 1 extremely fine. Not an easy cloth to weave and the reason it's only 50in wide is that the lycra is in the weft, which has pulled it in, it won't pull out again. The width is what it is, but instead of being a perfectly flat cloth it has a bit of a ripple effect. Beautifully made. £3.50 per mtr.

FA28 Depardieu A wonderful 60in wide, mercerised cotton knitted jersey in navy blue with a fine white horizontal stripe at 1/2in intervals, onions and berets come to mind as well as the heavy joweled French actor. More likely to have gone into children's articles where the number of stripes and the effects on the eyes is lessened, hence the soft hand and good quality. £4.50 per mtr.

FA29 Down Sizing 45in wide, stone coloured poly/ cotton/ lycra lightweight suiting with a bit of an orange peely finish made to use in lightweight travel/ safari type clothing. It has an element of water repellence about it and because of its width is only £2.50 per mtr.

Samples

FA24 Chef 60in wide poly/cotton twill probably of the 6/7 ounce weight which is trouser/apron/jacketing weight in a red and white 1 inch square check, ideal for those of us having barbecues. We have the same fabric in stripes in 'Ahoy There'. 60in wide. £4.00 per mtr.

FA25 Corduroy 60in wide, 6 wale, medium weight cotton corduroy in navy blue. £4.50 per mtr.

FA26 Cotton Jersey Years ago you could fall over this cloth there was so much of it produced and probably still is, but not in this country as a result of which you got T-shirts that were never in shape primarily because of the making up but also because the cloth was rubbish. We have managed to get hold of some very nice quality cotton jersey in varying weights and widths. a) Very pale pink 64in wide. a) Bright Pink 65in wide. b) Marine Blue 60in wide. b) Aqua almost 70in wide. c) Pinky/ rusty almost 70in wide. d) White almost 70in wide. e) Black 60in wide. All 100% fine cotton: £4.50 per mtr.

FA27 Canvas 60in wide light wine coloured, heavy cotton canvas, outdoor type fabric. One of those cloths that will improve with age, a bit like I did. £4.00 per mtr.

Captain's day For those of you with any interest in golf, and I know that's not going to be many, you will know the importance of the special days in the golfing calendar. The beginning of the season when the Captain Drives In, that's not by car, and the subsequent festivals throughout the year, probably celebrating the fact that we are all still alive. Golf despite what you might see and hear is in fact fairly quickly becoming purely an old man's pastime. What ho, this weekend sees the competition for the Captain's prize, always a special day and I must away to prepare. I will tell you if I win and I won't mention it again if I don't.

Please send us the reference number and name of the fabric you want plus the following depending on your requirements. a) 1 - 5 items, FREE. You can send us your request to info@croftmill.co.uk or alternatively post your request and please include a SAE. b) 6 - 10 items, £2.50. (Non refundable) c) 11 - 25 items, £5.00. (Non refundable) You can also view all of our fabrics at www.croftmill.co.uk

FA30 Dress Velvet 60in wide 100% cotton dress velvet with a silky sheen finish, the colour of which is a very expensive looking gold: £6.00 per mtr.

FA31 Diddly Um 60in wide, tie-dyed cotton cloth in a yellow, red and orange blotch design. Probably took someone with several degrees to come up with this. A lovely cloth, one to tuck away for next summer perhaps. £4.00 per mtr.

FA32 Debacle Following on from what was undoubtly a huge mess created by a Yorkshire man up in the Shetlands from which I hope they have recovered and maybe even prospered. We have some 30in wide wonderful Harris Tweed in Moorland / heathery tones of green, brown and myriad other colours in the mix. We probably ought to keep it just to prove that we had it, but that's not why we are here. £12.00 per mtr. Very little left.

FA33 Dyeing for my Art Viscose 57in wide viscose dress fabrics in a nice drapey weight that won't crease easily. Very comfy to wear. a) Blue - much more ordered and neater than Cy

Twombly's work but nevertheless an abstract splodgy type floral print design on a white ground. The flowers are in blue and turquoise and mauve and lilac roughly outlined in dark navy with green leaves. Very nice. b) Red - as above but the flowers are red and pink or brown and creamy gold outlined in a dark brown with sage leaves. c) Black - Red/pink and pale orange/cream flowers outlined in dark beige on a black ground. All £4.50 per mtr.

FA34 Ever Green 54in wide, superior cotton lawn with an all over but not dense printed floral design in blue, green, mushroom and dark brown. Very pretty, very fresh. £4.00 per mtr.

FA41 Grab your Coat and Grab your Hat 60in wide, wool worsted with polyester and elastane suiting in charcoal grey with a fine pinstripe in a much paler grey at 1/2in intervals. A beautiful mens suiting cloth: £6.00 per mtr.

FA42 Green Pea Fleece Whilst very fine this is actually a double fleece with a windproof waterproof membrane in between the two layers. I can remember having this fabric or one very similar back in the old Croft Mill days, which sold exceptionally well and was the forerunner of fleeces, which repelled the weather. To give you some idea of the weight it is two micro fleeces bonded together by the membrane so the overall weight might be 300grms. The rolls are quite heavy having said that, if you get on with the colour it's a bit of a bargain, 60in wide: £7.00 per mtr.

FA35 Ellen Scrumptious 45in wide fine cotton poplin. This is a striped pattern with a 1/8th inch coloured stripe and ¼ inch cream stripe. In the cream stripe there are tiny little roses every ¼ inch running up the stripe. This comes in 2 colourways a) Black and Cream - the Roses are red and pink and green b) Green and Cream - the Roses are pink and green £5.00 per mtr.

Opening Times We are not a shop as we have already mentioned. However appointments can be made and orders can be picked up if preferred. For placing orders by phone we are open between 9.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday but you can order online at www.croftmill.co.uk 24/7.

FA36 Ex Henri Lloyd Waterproofs Both are 60in wide and are £3.50 per mtr. a) Royal blue polyester hopsack with white reverse. b) Rubber coated waterproof cotton in navy with black rubber. Scrummy (if waterproof fabrics excite you!)

FA37 Finest Quality White Shirting 60in white finest quality poly/cotton shirting. £3.50 per mtr.

Our Guarantee As long as it has not been cut we will replace or make a refund for anything not to your liking within 14 days of delivery of your fabrics.

FA38 Football As we didn't do too well in the World Cup and as we plumped on my suggestion to get some St George flag fabric, I feel somewhat responsible for the remaining cloth. We have about 20mtrs of the said cloth available which may suit other occasions or indeed the next World Cup. £1.25 per mtr. P.S. You can get 9 flags per mtr. Obviously not massive ones but the cloth is 60in wide. so, not too small.

FA39 Giorgio Some of you may well remember me talking about a chap we have had a business association with for long time who to overcome some of his physical challenges loves to wear big time designer label clothing. Once he appeared in a mauve linen suit, which was obviously made for someone taller than him, but it must have been a bargain. Anyway he introduced us to this lovely 60% linen 40% cotton, fine twill suiting, and if you like linen you will certainly like this. It is black, 54in wide & £5.00 per mtr.

FA40 Green Gables Grandpa shirting, 56in wide 100% cotton with 1/4in wide woven stripe, pale blue and cream. It has a soft finish, ideal summer shirting fabric. This is a new batch and has cost us more so this is now £3.75 per mtr. 4

FA43 Gingham 1/4in corded edged gingham 45in wide, poly/cotton a) Red: b) Green: c) Lilac. d) Yellow: e) Pale Blue: f) Dark Blue: g) Black: h) Brown £3.00 per mtr.

FA44 1 Inch Gingham 1” corded edged gingham 45in wide, poly/cotton a) Emerald Green b) Pale Blue c) Dark Blue d) Red £3.00 per mtr.

FA45 Flannel I know there is a lot of it about particularly when it comes to politicians plain speaking so let me make this absolutely clear. Here we have 60in wide brushed cotton checked shirting in two designs. a) Grey with a darker grey, slate grey and white over check. £3.50 per mtr. b) Wine / burgundy coloured cloth with an over check in blue, yellow, and very dark blue. The colours are interwoven so you don't get any flat bits of colour. Both have a soft finish and they are not too heavy. £4.00 per mtr.

T:01282 859281 email: info@croftmill.co.uk website: www.croftmill.co.uk

FA46 From the Sublime ----60in wide polyester bistretch, which just means two ways, not overly stretchy, but it gives in both warp and weft directions. We only have it in one colour if it proves popular we will have a look at others. The colour you would have to say is school grey, it is lightweight trousering: £2.00 per mtr.

FA47 Hunter Tartan This is 60in wide tiny hunter tartan check in red black and a bit of yellow, with a brushed black back. It is in fact two cloths together. It is obviously a warm fabric and has been used in posh French children's garments forever and a day. I don't know the origins of this one except that it comes from a good childrenswear maker, not of cloth but of garments. It is wonderful to wear, beautifully soft. Last few metres. £4.00 per mtr.

and the brown is woven into lines in either direction forming a square. Strong and hard wearing cotton, viscose and polyester. Apparently made for the refurbishment of a hotel chain and we have the remains. It will cover many sins and could therefore be a favourite with students. £3.50 per mtr.

FA52 I am Undone We have had for some time now a cotton voile, wonderful in my opinion, as fine as can be, 60in wide in a fairly vivid but dark orange with an all over chequered print in white and yellow. In the squares formed by the white and yellow are irregular but quite small burgundy dots and indeed not all the little squares have a dot in them. The cloth is soft and drapey and has a beautiful hand. £4.00 per mtr.

FA53 I'll Huff and I'll Puff 60in wide, heavy unbleached cotton calico, suitable for covering furniture and painting. £4.00 per mtr.

FA48 His Heaviness 60in wide, wool/poly coating. Not sure about the amount of wool but it has a good feel and is a great weight, so if you want a Sherwood green, woven, twill patterned, wool/poly coating this could be your man. If you didn't want to wear it you could make picnic rugs or horse blankets or perhaps horse blankets need to be lighter and possibly made of fleece. Horses used to have wool blankets so why not start again. £5.00 per mtr.

FA54 Just Arrived At the very last push up, just as I was walking out of the door having finished the catalogue, what should turn up but some navy blue 98% cotton 2% lycra, fine towelling. It doesn't quite match the navy track suiting we have elsewhere, it's a brighter colour, a beautiful blue. 60in wide, £4.50 per mtr.

FA55 John Wayne FA49 If You Go Down To The Woods Today…….. A very pretty navy blue brushed cotton with an all over but not too densely printed old Steiff like teddy bear in various poses and not with food but with posies. The teddies are teddy bear coloured and the flowers have some elements of the teddy bear colour with green, red and pale blue amongst it. Can't see the boys getting too excited. £4.50 per mtr.

FA50 It Must be the Heat 60 inch wide wool mouflon fabric which is a wool that has been raised, brushed so therefore increased in volume which has the effect of lightening the cloth and giving it bulk. In the middle of winter these fabrics wouldn't be available or they would at prohibitive amounts of money, but as does it they are here now so if you want to buy them fair enough. There are 3 colours; a) Black which has a slight grey wispy angora finish to it. b) French Navy. c) Dark Navy. They are what is left of last winter's stock from the maker of coats that charged around £400 per article and they'd probably have 3mtrs of cloth in them for a full-length coat, you can do the same thing the less than £40. £12.00 per mtr.

FA51 Is it I? For some little time now I have tried to persuade you of the benefits of this wonderful furnishing fabric but obviously failed. It seems to be an all or nothing cloth, you don't want a metre of it you want 10 or 20 or whatever. The yarns in it are, brown, light mustard and an odd bit of blue, all of which combine to give the brown and dark mustard colour. It is a sort of 1in square check, i.e. the mustard is the main body of the colour

60in wide, robust cotton cavalry twills in a) Pea green. b) Burgundy. These have a light brushed finish, if anything, the burgundy is slightly heavier than the green and apart from the colour they will do everything the US cavalry could. £5.00 per mtr.

FA56 Lace We have two polyester laces to tell you about a) Totally 'on trend' lace in cream, it is about 48in wide with an all over fairly intricate pattern, one which would do well in old fashioned shawls or in dresses worn by celebrities. £4.00 per mtr. b) Pink, 56in wide, much softer fabric, not as much detail as the cream and it has a rose pattern. This is polyester with lycra and is more of an under fabric than an over fabric. £3.50 per mtr.

FA57 London Fog I know that in Sherlock's Day fog was a prerequisite in the plot and now is generally a thing of the past. Speaking of which I invite you to consider this rather excellent 68in wide linen cotton slub weave canvas in soft white. That sounds a bit like someone I once knew in a previous life. Suffice to say it was woven and finished in Ireland. Fairly substantial: £6.00 per mtr.

FA58 Lovely Cottons a)

b)

Daisy Pink - 60in wide deepish salmon background, a similar floral pattern in burgundy, dark and light beige and white. The predominant colour is light salmon pink: £3.50 per mtr. Wedgewood Floral Voile - 54in wide. A white

shadow stripe cotton voile with an all over but reasonable sparse floral sprig design in different shades of blue and the sprigs are joined by rows of tiny little leaves in the same tones of blue. The shadow weave in the cloth forms approximately 1/8in stripes, which you will see when you get it on but when it's on the roll it's not that easy to see: £4.50 per mtr.

FA59 Love is Like ……….. 45in wide, cotton seersucker in a lemon and white 1/8in check with embroidered outline butterflies at regular intervals in yellow. Extraordinarily pretty. £5.00 per mtr.

FA60 Leatherette 60 inch wide superior leather faux furnishing in a dark brown. It doesn't come much better as it has an article than this and it is £7.50 per mtr.

FA63 Morse 56 inch wide black cotton lawn with a dot dot dash embroidered fine stripe at half inch intervals. Not quite see through but very fine. £4.50 per mtr.

FA64 Mrs Overall I know you will remember that wonderful character from Acorn Antiques who as a waitress, immaculately dressed in black and white, when serving soup spilt most of it. This cloth would not be of much use for waitresses, it's too silky for that, but we do have it in black and white. It does have a name, which at the moment I can't quite get that computer in my head to find. No doubt as I go through life's toils it will come back to me. We did have it some years ago in the old Croft Mill. It is 60in wide, a softly finished lightweight suiting in very white or very black 100% polyester, a soft silky hand. £3.00 per mtr.

FA65 Mary Had…… FA61 Mexican Wave This is a 56in wide cotton velvet. Ok so now comes the difficult bit in describing it to you. The colours and the pattern are all contained within the one fabric, the back of which is actually grey but the front i.e. the velvet side has got dark greens, a very pale greeny gold and a bit of brown with an overall appearance of a dark/rich fabric. This all looks like the beach when the sea has been in and done its bit but not the flat bit, the bit that ripples. The ripples aren't straight up and down or across they are diagonal and they come in bands of 3 or 4 and are about 2 inches wide. I know you're thinking he is making a bit of a mess of this and in truth I probably am but this new machine isn't helping because I have panicked a little bit. It's certainly either for skirts, jackets or perhaps for a waistcoat. The cloth is of an outstanding variety. I think its hundred percent cotton, there may be little bit of viscose in there and it has a slight sheen to the finish to add to all its other glories; this is £8.50 per mtr.

Bags Our paper bags - that is to say the paper bags in which we pack our cloth - have caused some people anxiety because of what it says on the outside. When they come to us they are brand new bags that have not been used by the people who should have used them in the first place.

60in wide polyester short hair fur fabric in cream with an incredibly soft hand. German made, part of a batch of which we have only a small amount. £7.00 per mtr.

FA66 Moleskin 100% Cotton moleskin 60in wide: a) Dark brown. b) Dark navy. c) Mid brown. All very mouthwatering at £4.75 per mtr.

FA67 New Moleskins 60in wide, cotton moleskin in different colours a) A very dusky pink. b) A pale applely green. c) A cross between a very dark turquoise and kingfisher blue, sensational. £5.50 per mtr. PS. I told you it was Captain's day at the golf club recently when I went in my lime green trousers, purple socks and matching shirt, i.e. white pink and lime green shirt, not purple to match the socks but it did have some purple stripes. I didn't win, not even for the brightest outfit.

FA68 Nights in Black Satin 58in wide (145cm) luxurious black (noir) polyester satin. Ideal for those nights in with your crisps and stout: £4.50 per mtr. PS could use this with Item 'The Black Spot'.

FA69 Nearly Linen FA62 Moorcroft 45in wide lovely soft silky polyester satin. Darkish lilac with a growing and spreading floral pattern in darker lilac with purple stems upon which are sprouting gold and red flowers of different varieties. It's quite a bold pattern but not brazen in anyway, it's quite subtle and would very much be happy during the day or as eveningwear. That's a little bit of fashion designer speak isn't it and I really don't want to go down that road. We don't have a great deal of it. £3.75 per mtr.

6

60in plus wide, 35% lyocell, 30% linen, 25% polyester and 10% cotton fabric, with interest in the weave, quite heavy suiting weight, hangs beautifully and now comes in 2 colours. a) Dark Navy blue. b) Beige. There is only a hat full of either. £4.50 per mtr.

FA70 Nearly 58/60in poly/viscose 'tweed' suiting, lightweight, in brown with orange and white slubs in the yarn. It doesn't have the feel of wool and doesn't pretend to be, but it really does have a nice

T:01282 859281 email: info@croftmill.co.uk website: www.croftmill.co.uk

hand. I expect this would be expensive to make but we have it at £3.50 per mtr.

FA71 One Suit You may recall last summer we had two suits one of which was a cream/ light mustardy colour and the other was lilac. The cream/ mustard has entirely gone, but we still have the lilac and who knows if lilac will be next season's colour and even if it isn't why should we worry. I have a pair of lilac golf shorts, which were carefully altered, by my wife, from a pair of Ralph Lauren trousers, which were cut to suit the American waist and buttocks, or as Forest Gump would say but-ocks. I happen to think the colour is delightful and the cloth itself is fabulous. It is poly/cotton 55/45, 60in wide and as an inducement it is £3.00 per mtr.

orange and dark green. Traditional. Very Pretty. Beautifully woven and a lovely hand. £5.50 per mtr. h)

FA76 Percale 94in wide, white cotton rich poly/cotton percale sheeting, woven in Italy where they have a nose for fine fabrics. It's a pity it's not wider. £5.00 per mtr.

FA72 Pretty Prints 45in wide, 80% poly/cotton fine poplin in the following patterns: £2.50 per mtr. a) Lilac Floral Spray - Tiny lilac floral spray with green leaves on a cream ground. b) Blue Floral Spray - Tiny mid blue floral spray with green leaves on a cream ground c) Bright Pink Rose - Small pink abstract roses with blue flowers, green leaves and red highlights on a white ground. d) Funky Red - funky large retro red floral on a white ground. e) Funky Navy - funky large retro navy floral on a white ground.

FA74 Pikestaff Fabulous 60in wide, plain off white, not quite cream, cotton. Of course if you prefer this can be dyed to any colour you want! £3.00 per mtr.

FA75 Poplin Prints 45in wide, poplin upon which have been printed pleasant and beautiful designs. a) Tiny Rose - An off white/cream background with an all over but sparsely printed blue and green floral rose design. b) Penelope - A quite bright but soft pink with a tiny all over floral design in pink, very dark burgundy, bright yellow and green. Extremely pretty, lovely for little girls. c) The National Trust - A slatey green background with an all over outline floral print in white. d) Pollyanna Black - A black background with a tiny all over print in white. e) Navy Rose - A dark navy background with a tiny all over print in pink, green and lemon. f) Pretty Pinstripe - Cream ground with triple green pinstripe in between which are tiny flowers in pink and blue. g) Say it with flowers - Slate Green ground with similar rose floral print in pink dark red cream, pale

FA77 Pale Grey Lining We have about 50mtrs of a pale silvery grey, acetate lining, 54in wide, almost of the same quality those in 'Tailors Linings' but as this came as a sop for something a supplier couldn't deliver it is only £1.00 mtr.

FA78 Poplin - Plain Dyed 45in wide 100% superior quality dyed cotton poplin. a) Red b) Cerise £5.00 per mtr.

FA79 Peaches and Cream There is an element of the purply /bronze colour in this fabric but it is predominantly a mixture of purply /bronze and beige yarns giving an overall effect of purply/ beige. It has two weave patterns in the 1/2in stripe, one stripe being a kind of hopsack plain weave and the other a diagonal twill weave. This is 60% wool 40% polyester and is 60in wide. £5.50 per mtr.

FA80 Punte Romano There are those out there who know all about this cloth and others who will be wondering what on earth it all means; I suppose literally it means a Roman bridge. What's that got to do with anything you will ask yourself. As far as the fabric is concerned it is a heavy duty polyester/ acrylic /lycra cloth, possibly used in the making of jodhpur like garments or tights for sporting activities, cycling shorts, that sort of thing. Immensely strong, beautifully made, quite rare I think. Around 56in wide. £4.00 per mtr.

FA81 Rose and Hubble 45in wide medium sized floral print in cream, taupe and white on a black ground. Superb quality cotton, made in Japan: £3.00mtr

FA82 Revenge first This 60in wide, heavy wool crepe coating in dark lavender is seriously tough, seriously beautiful. We had it rolled down into 30mtr lots because anything more than that and you couldn't lift it. This is not likely to have been a recent cloth, as I am fairly certain it was made in England and we haven't made this sort of cloth for a long time. It will make a super coat, cover the settee,

keep draughts out. You won't be displeased. £7.50 per mtr.

FA83 Quality Cotton Trouserings For those of you who bought these wonderful cotton trouserings, we hope you are pleased but for those of you who have not; these are 60in wide quite substantial fabrics and are made up into garments for an awfully expensive big name brand. a) A fine cotton twill in black, this also has a lightly sanded finish. b) A fine cotton Bedford cord in a pale apple green c) A fine twill in beige/khaki. d) A fine cotton twill in burgundy which has been very lightly gone over to give it a soft hand. I have said it before and I'll say it again they are fabulous. These are all £4.50 per mtr.

you would make trousers but you would make a skirt. Whether you would want both jacket and skirt I am not sure. There are two colour ways. a) Beige - All shades of brown down to cream in the form of a dogtooth check. The background is basically cream woven into which are beige, darker beige, brown and darker brown making shapes, all of which are very clever and b) Jewel - The same pattern with a different cream background into which are woven the same shapes, in navy blue turquoise, pale green and lemon. As good as cloth gets. Both are £9.50 per mtr.

FA85 Melt in The Mouth - Suiting A wonderful, if there ever can be such a term used for beige. This would be described in a gentleman's brochure as tropical weight i.e. not very heavy and suited to warmer climes but don't let that put you off. This cloth will look pretty exceptional anywhere. 60% wool 40% polyester. 60in wide: £7.00 per mtr.

FA86 Satin Moleskin 60in wide polyester “moleskin” with a satin back. Easy care and quite stunning even if it is in beige: £3.50 per mtr.

FA87 Sequins We have a tiny amount left of last winters sequin fabric. I'll refresh your memory, it's about 56in wide, silver, it's a bit odd in that every ¼ of a meter or so there is a line where the sequins join up, but if you are making small articles like evening bags it really doesn't matter. Inordinately expensive usually, but for the last bit. A Bargain at £4.00 per mtr.

FA88 Shine on 44” wide gold or silver lame. For decoration, for dress, for furnishing even. High gloss mirror finish. £4.00 per mtr.

FA89 Slip Sliding Satin For these areas the charge depends on weight. Surcharges apply and vary from £0 - £8 on top of the standard charge. Please place your order and we will confirm the charge before we ship. Details of our charges per weight can be found at www.croftmill.co.uk For the month of September all orders over £100 will be posted free to UK mainland postcodes only, discounts available to other areas (restrictions apply).

A84 Q I 60in wide, interesting and beautiful suiting made from mostly wool with the addition of silk to give it a hand like no other. Just the one weight, which is light suiting, jacketing, I doubt that 8

45in wide, heavy duty satin, with a fantastic sheen and a great body. If you are into theatricals this autumn and early winter, this is a cloth that will be seen at the back of any auditorium never mind the school hall. a) Emerald b) Royal Blue c) Petrol £3.50 per mtr.

FA90 Sheeting Not exactly like discovering a 6.2-carat diamond but in its own way just as comforting. 50/50 poly/cotton, 94in wide. a) Red b) Black c) Navy £4.50 per mtr.

FA91 Swimwear 60 inch wide nylon/ lycra swimsuit fabric in two designs. a) Orange and a shade of red to match the orange all in a

floral tropical print. Patriotic red, white and blue all over floral pattern. Not quite as tropical this time but is exceptionally colourful. Both £6.00 per mtr. b)

FA92 Squiggly Pink 60in wide cotton poplin with an all over outlined single thread floral embroidery design. The thread is shaded from dark red to pink giving the flowers of the embroidery a lovely tone. £5.00 per mtr.

FA93 Shades of Autumn 54in wide viscose dress fabric on dark brown ground with a pink, beige and white contemporary floral design. Quite pretty. £4.00 per mtr.

FA99 Tailors linings 60in wide ”proper'' tailors linings in viscose acetate a) Mid Grey. b) Mid brown. They will suit lots of different coloured cloths, they have a dull sheen to the finish. We haven't a lot of them at £3.50 per mtr.

FA100 Taffeta 58in wide, polyester taffeta in 2 colours, a) Dark gold b) Dark damson It has a' distressed' finish which is no surprise considering the treatment it is given. Sort of bouffanty things come to mind as do indeed do ball gowns. Quite rare I think. £4.50 per mtr.

FA101 Things That Go Bump FA94 Suits you Sir 60in wide, cotton suiting. You would swear looking at it that it ought to be made of wool but it isn't. It is a very tiny check in navy blue, dark mustard and grey. The overall appearance is quite dark and the navy blue is the predominant item in the check. Erm, perhaps not, it's worthy of a sample if you haven't seen it on the website. Cracking weight and a lovely cloth. £4.50 per mtr.

60in wide, cotton trouserings from Germany, which are a bit special. a) Tan one side with a printed fancy chain stitch fine stripe in a bark (grey brown) colour on the other. It has a light brushing on the bark side. b) A very dark brown brushed cloth with a fine woven beige pin stripe at half-inch intervals, which melds well into the brushing. Both are £5.50 per mtr.

FA95 Sex and the City 60in wide or thereabouts very soft, silky printed polyester satin of a type that we had before in reds, purple and black and this time it's in vibrant greens, reds, lime and black. It's an all over tropical pattern and would look splendid in those things that you wear tucked inside your top and then spend all your time stopping them blowing away and exposing your legs; very Caribbean, very designer! £4.50 per mtr.

FA96 Smarter 60in wide, very finely woven cotton trousering in very dark navy with a black back, whether this contributes to the darkness of the navy I am not sure but why else would you have a black back on a navy cloth. On closer inspection the navy face side has a very fine twill weave whilst the black back has a plain weave. Under normal circumstances you only get that if you weave two cloths and put them together. I don't know how they have done that, but it is a weave and not a print. Super cloth. £5.50 per mtr.

FA97 Spot the Difference A delightful whisper light cotton lawn in cream with an all over dot print in pale orange and burgundy. The size of the dots varies from tiny to no more than 1/4in in diameter. £6.00 per mtr.

FA102 The Crafty Spot 45in wide, beautiful cotton poplin cloth in either a) Pale sage green b) Pale blue c) Dusky pink d) Light navy e) Red (dark not pillar box) These have a tiny all over white polka dot print. We used to only have the green but these are a welcome addition to the party. £5.50 per mtr.

FA103 The Black Spot Cream satin with a 1½” diameter black spot design. It is true to say there is more of the black showing than there is of the cream. Very striking. £4.00 per mtr.

FA104 The Great Washed 60in wide, 100% cotton, medium weight shirting in white. It has had a washing, as indeed all cloths have some kind of washing but this was maybe given an extra one. It has a soft finish, not pristine as in an ironed poly-cotton but has a slightly dimpled used look about it. Quite splendid. £4.50 per mtr.

FA105 Towneley FA98 Seersucker As summery as you are going to get, this 45 inch wide 100% cotton seersucker which is a bit of a rarity is an 1/8 of an inch check in pink and white and would look ever so pretty in a tiny dress with puff sleeves. a) Pale Pink and white b) Cerise and white Both are £4.50 per mtr.

In our first foray back in business last summer we had a roll of a wonderful fabric softly finished with a light brushing in a navy and a paler blue muted 1in sq check, close examination reveals that there are lots of other colours of yarn in the weave as well, so it doesn't just appear as a blue cloth. Not the absolute best time to be selling wool flannel fabric but it is worth having. 60in wide. £7.00 per mtr.

FA106 Tutu 56 inch wide stretchy polyester net with floral embroidery in pink very pale lemon and pale blue. It is exceptionally pretty and if you have the money or the wherewithal even to use such a fabric please do, it's a one off and are not likely to get another. £4.00 per mtr.

FA107 The Great Indoors 56in wide very expensively made cotton furnishing fabric in a corded edge 1in stripe in cream and two tones of grey. It will also make wonderful clothes: £5.00 per mtr.

FA108 Times Square Imagining all the lights of Times Square and perhaps of Las Vegas combined a dark night. Got it? Right well this viscose dress fabric is all that, vibrant and full of colour. Bright pink, mauve, yellow, gold and cream fabulous abstract design on a black ground. Golly Gosh! You won't go unnoticed in this. 60in wide £4.50 per mtr.

FA109 Velvet Cord 60in wide, ridiculously fine cotton cord, with a velvet finish. Without lycra. a) Pale beige. b) Dark brown. With lycra. c) Pale blue. d) Bright pink. e) Navy Blue The pale beige and brown are lighter in weight than the others, smashing, great! All are £5.00 per mtr.

FA110 Van Delden 60 inch wide poly/cotton, this time in a darker beige which because of the fineness in the weave and the finest coatings is actually water repellent so this makes excellent summer walking or anorak gear, very light weight: The very best Van Delden in Holland - the very best, you would pay £60+ if you bought Rohan or Northface trousers in this. £4.50 per mtr.

FA111 Veronique - Taffeta 60in wide, embroidered polyester taffeta in 3 colours a) Silvery Grey. b) Sapphire. c) Black. The embroidery is a creeping trailing floral design in a half drop across the width. Therefore making 2 repeats across the cloth and 4 trails. The flower is elegant and there is a lot of cloth between the embroidery i.e. the embroidery is not overpowering. One of the leaves “bursts” open with velour inside. This is awfully clever and a classy cloth. £5.50 per mtr.

FA112 Velour - Hip Hip Hooray Ok so here we have some really really nice velours to tell you about. 60in wide soft, cuddly, polyester velour in 3 different types. Garments with an in built looseness come to mind. The first has a thick rib and comes in: a) Racing Green b) Black 10

c) Grey d) Damson The second has a very fine rib and is: e) Delightful cornflower blue f) Navy Blue The third is simply plain and is g) Red All are £5.00 per mtr.

FA113 Wool Crepe 60in wide wool/polyester light suiting/dress weight fabric in a) French navy. b) Dark navy. Beautiful cloth, melt in the hand feel: £7.50 per mtr.

FA114 What is He Playing At? One of the storerooms we are using has no heating; it is very cold, some may say well insulated from the heat outside. Not good for me but OK for the cloth. It is an ideal place to store woollen fabrics waiting for use in winter, but there is no proper time to buy cloth, if the cloths right it's the right time if it isn't the right cloth there is never a right time. 100% wool fabric woven in Italy for a high street stores suits at around the £200 mark. We have one 50mtr roll. A sort of Donegal tweed but it isn't a tweed in that it is not rough, it is in black and grey yarns, the overall effect being medium to light grey with millions of squares formed by the warp and the weft. Beautiful hand. £7.50 per mtr.

FA115 Waxed Cotton 60in wide heavily waxed, heavy cotton Barbour cloth in two colours a) Very dark Mustard b) Very dark Burgundy I find this cloth a pain. It marks easily, although marks are part of the nature and charm of the fabric. You can warm it up and it becomes more malleable and perhaps even some of the marks disappear, they will come back again as soon as you move in it. Makes the sort of coats that, when you sit down you sit but the coat doesn't. However it wouldn't be so dammed expensive if people didn't like it and you can enjoy a very expensive coat for around £20 from here. £7.00 per mtr.

FA116 Waterproof (Superfine) 60in wide black superfine coated, waterproof, breathable, Polyester fabric, which would have gone into the outer of those expensive down filled gilets. A supreme cloth which is still made locally: £4.50 per mtr.

FA117 Waterproofs 60 inch wide Ex Henri Lloyd waterproof fabrics: a) Very dark green polyester hopsack which has a breathable coating on the backside £3.50 per mtr. b) Black synthetic rubber waterproofing backed with a white knitted fabric £4.00 per mtr. c) Red synthetic rubber waterproofing backed with a white knitted fabric £4.00 per mtr. The latter two are very flexible. The green one is rather more rigid.

FA118 Walk on by? Too much beige is in the cry! Why when they are all different I say! We have a few fawn/ beige trousering/ jacketing fabrics but they all have a completely different character. You can tell I get close to these fabrics. Anyway back to it....... This is a soft and elegant 60in wide cotton 2% lycra trousering in fawn £4.50 per mtr.
