welcome A special welcome to our thrilling new autumn season which sees the premiere of four fantastic new professional theatre productions by Cumbernauld Theatre Company. Alongside our wonderful programme of theatre we’ll be presenting a great mix of nights out featuring music, comedy, film, children’s creative activities and special events to excite and entertain throughout the dark nights.

Cumbernauld Theatre Company was founded in 1978 and this season will be our 31st birthday. That’s 31 years during which we’ve created thousands of performances, thousands of educational workshops and seen over a million attendances. Throughout this time we’ve been so successful because of you. The communities of Cumbernauld rightly value their theatre - the great shows we create, the artists we present, the work we do in our community with young (and not so young) people. Your theatre is rightly admired throughout Scotland, and my thanks go to each and every one who has helped make this theatre such a special place. There really is nothing to compare to the live experience - it’s exciting, real,

wonderful, inspiring, challenging and rewarding - like a shared conversation between good friends.

And as ever, I want to do everything in my power to make sure everyone has the chance to enjoy this special experience. That’s why we have our ‘Love The Arts’ ticket discount scheme. Compare our prices to other theatres and you’ll find we’re already great value, but I want to make sure we can make our work even more accessible. So, if you have access to email, simply join our discount scheme free of charge and you’ll enjoy special offers and discounts throughout the year. So, in the year of our 31st birthday, I look forward to welcoming old friends and new friends alike to our wonderful, friendly, unique theatre in the park for what promises to be a season of fantastic nights out. You’re always welcome to join me for a drink and a chat at one of our many after show social events. Ed Robson Artistic Director

ECHOES: A WORK IN PROGRESS Nicola McCartney Mick Slaven Fiona Miller

Dramaturge Composer Director

SAT 3 OCTOBER / 8PM

A man helps a woman to put on her underwear. She remembers when she used to undress for him. A woman grasps the hand shake of her new neighbour. It is the first time anyone has touched her since her husband died. A man asks his wife when he will have breakfast for the twentieth time that morning. She barks back a tired reply. He winks and whispers a love song he sang to her on their wedding day. They dance.

drama Please do join us for a drink and an informal chat after the show – it makes a real and important contribution to know your thoughts during the early development of this new production. Ed Robson Artistic Director

Intimacy can be one of the greatest losses we experience with advancing age. Our expression of it be it in sex, shared secrets, or the comfort of basic human touch, is a huge expression of ourselves as individuals. However, those extra years can also bring a new freedom in the way we give and accept love which can ultimately transform us. This work in progress explores our enduring need for intimacy and how the ways in which we express it change with the passing years. TICKETS - FREE

A Memory of Federico García Lorca WED 28 - SAT 31 OCTOBER / 8PM THU 29 - POST SHOW DISCUSSION

Federico García Lorca is arguably Spain’s most celebrated playwright and poet of the 20th century, famed for his wonderful and highly emotionally charged work capturing love and loss and the very essence of the Spanish soul. In 1936, at the very outbreak of the Spanish civil war, Lorca was arrested and secretly shot at dawn by Franco’s rising right-wing fascist militia. Cumbernauld Theatre Company present this world premiere production as a memory of the great writer’s all too short and sometimes troubled life. In the early 1920’s Lorca left his home town of Granada to study in Madrid, where he lived with Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel, both fellow students at La Residencia college. In this imagined work the three young friends Lorca, Dali and Bunel - all destined to become giants of modern art - meet one night to celebrate their sorrows. As their country faces the threat and tensions of social unrest, the three friends gather their ideas together to explore the ties that bind them. Cumbernauld Theatre’s passionate and powerful production captures the ideals and ideas of Lorca’s wonderful verse and the passionate emotional struggle of those turbulent times. This production is suitable for ages 16+ and may contain adult themes and language TICKETS £9 / £7.50 / UNDER 18s £5 TICKET SPECIAL: TICKETS ON WED 28 OCT HAVE £2 OFF Please join us after the production of Thurs 29 Oct for a discussion on the production with Director Ed Robson and cast members.

CUMBERNAULD THEATRE: HAPPY BIRTHDAY A Centre For Creative Collaboration Cumbernauld Theatre originally began in 1961 when a small group of determined residents persuaded the Cumbernauld Development Corporation to lease them a set of old abandoned farm cottages. Throughout the 1960’s, this committed team rehearsed and presented many new plays raising money to renovate the old buildings as The Cottage Theatre. In 1969 the main arena theatre opened and in 1978 the name of the theatre was changed from the Cottage Theatre to Cumbernauld Theatre and the first professional company with an Artistic Director appointed. So, this coming 1st December will be our official 31st birthday. That’s 31 years in which we’ve presented thousands of performances, ran thousands of workshops with young people, developed countless community projects and seen over 1 million attendances. In all that time there have been just five Artistic Directors - beginning with John Baraldi followed by Robert Robson, Liz Caruthers, Simon Sharkey and now Ed Robson.

Ed Robson was previously Associate Director of Northern Stage Ensemble, Resident Director at The Old Vic, Studio and Assistant Director at Birmingham Rep, and previously an actor and director for many touring companies. Throughout a succession of directors, the Theatre has always developed new artistic productions and projects that reflect the changing nature of the times. It is the Artistic Director that decides and develops our artistic aims, developing policies and directing productions and projects that enable the theatre to continue to grow. Over the past 2 years the Theatre has been successfully developing its artistic role as a Centre for Creative Collaboration. So, alongside our professional acting company and our varied programme of quality touring drama, music and dance we also now support emerging and mid-career professional performing artists and companies by investing new ideas and partnerships, commissioning new plays, providing help and resources, and co-producing new work at our home theatre and on tour across Scotland.

Alongside this we also deliver a comprehensive range of community activity. Our theatre and drama workshops work with up to 250 young people each week – we’re almost the size of a primary school! We have an adult drama group, two music performers groups, a new writers group, and a Studio Arts Forum for older people. We regularly work with schools, colleges and community groups to develop projects for people to participate in the arts.

This is an ambitious project to enhance and develop our creative work and the services we provide to our communities. We aim to become a leading force in culture and creativity in Scotland. Next year, the Scottish Arts Council will be abolished to be replaced by a new funding body entitled Creative Scotland. There will be many challenges ahead if we are to make sure that our wonderful theatre builds for another 31 years of success.

It’s an enormous programme of work but there’s one key ingredient that binds these strands together: You, our supporters.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU

Thousands of people come to Cumbernauld Theatre each year to see wonderful shows, to enjoy a great night out, to celebrate, to join in, to be entertained, to discuss (and occasionally to enjoy a good argument!), to share a night with friends, to enjoy a good conversation, to be part of your community. Our Theatre rightly has a national reputation for excellence and innovation matched with a commitment to our community. Right now, we’re starting the process of building a partnership of consensus to establish Cumbernauld Theatre as the premiere central belt theatre in Scotland.

CUMBERNAULD THEATRE

On birthdays there should be presents… so throughout this autumn, in celebration of our 31 years, we’ll be giving you presents. You might just receive a phone call giving you free tickets, or you may be coming along one night and we’ll give you a small surprise, or we might write to you with a little something…all in the spirit of celebrating the achievements of this Theatre and thanking you for making it what it is. Happy Birthday Cumbernauld Theatre.
