Free Teddy Bears Picnic! Following the hugely successful Easter Egg Hunt held on Easter Saturday in Enniscorthy when in excess of 300 children (plus parents, minders, etc) descended on the town centre, the local retailers and service providers are organising another FREE event which promises to be equally successful. A Teddy Bears Picnic will be held on Saturday afternoon 14th June between 2 and 4pm with the children registering in the Market Square between 2pm and 2.30pm and then being sent on a clue finding mission which will end with some of the participants having a Teddy Bears

picnic on the green at The Duffry and the remainder having their picnic on Rafter Street. Each participating business will be represented on the entry form. The children taking part will visit each premises to obtain a letter of the alphabet and when all the shops have been visited the participants will have all the letters they need to solve the mystery and get free entry to the picnic. Like the recent Easter Egg Hunt each participating business will have a staff member in fancy dress and the town will be decorated with flags, bunting, balloons, etc which will create a

fantastic festive atmosphere. The participating businesses are very generously funding all the cost including the food, drink, treats, tableware etc for the picnic. Classic recipes are treated with respect and are followed with precision. What this means for the restaurant diner is that when you see a classic dish on the menu, you know exactly what will come to you on a plate. This kind of precision is not something that's been observed in Ireland over the past forty years. If your only experience of Italian cooking is what you've eaten in Irish restaurants, then you'll have a much skewed view of Italian cuisine. The problem is that Paolo Tullio, food and wine critic, there's rarely been any respect for the recipes. author and broadcaster. Paolo has been running Via Veneto, his restaurant in Enniscorthy, for many years now and his vision for his restaurant is straightforward. Be authentic. It takes determination and a hint of stubborness to do what Paolo does. Irish people have developed a taste for carbonara with cream over the years and often get upset when it's not there. A kind of fusion cuisine between Irish and Italian has evolved and many people have come to expect it. It's a slow process changing people’s tastes. But lile by lile Paolo has found that now his customers are beginning to appreciate the authenticity of what he does. Not only that, but other chefs and restaurants around the country are beginning to follow suit. There are places that have opened up in the past couple of years where you can eat genuine Italian food and they seem to be doing well. As the president of the Ciao Italia nel Mondo (Worldwide Association of Restauranteurs Irish Delegation) Paolo has been a model ambassador for Italian cuisine, constantly pushing for the genuine and the authentic. All my life I've been waiting for good Italian food in Ireland, and now, thanks to Paolo, I ﬁnally can have it.

Lookout security for anDroiD Lookout combines antivirus and antimalware tools for Android with lost phone tracking in case your phone is lost or stolen. It's one of the few Android security tools that's actually remarkably powerful and does what it promises. Lookout will keep your phone safe, help you find it when it's lost, back up your data, and protect your personal information from mobile threats, phishing sites, malware, and more. Lookout's "signal flare" shows you where your phone is on a Google Map if it's ever stolen or you lose it, and as soon as your battery gets low, the service sends its position to Lookout, just in case. That way your phone doesn't even have to be on for you to get a lead on where it may be now. Lookout's dashboard shows you which apps you've installed most recently and whether the app scanned them for known malware, URLs you've visited in your mobile browser and their scan status, and more. The app includes all of this, and still manages to be lightweight. By far though my favourite feature is if someone tries

to unlock your screen 5 times it takes a picture with the front facing camera and emails it to you, giving the option to share it on social media or show to the Gardaí. If it’s not broken then don’t fix it… if it’s not broken then don’t fix it… This was the passionate message coming loud and clear from the recent Wexford Local Development Showcase at the Talbot Hotel. A packed function room heard WLD Chairman Pat Rath give a rousing and emotive opening address on the merits and impact of Wexford Local Development over the past 3 years. Pat was lavish in his praise of the wonderful work of WLD and its industrious staff and said that he would be deeply saddened by the demise of such a marvellous organisation that has assisted so many people in parishes and communities the length and breadth of the county. He said that WLD had given the ordinary people of Wexford the opportunity to shape and design the space they were living in. 32,623 individuals, communities and enterprises have been supported by WLD over the past 3 years enabling them to significantly improve the quality of their lives.

CEO of Wexford Local Development Brian Kehoe gave the large crowd an insight into the background and workings of WLD which operates Tus, Get Vocal, The Warm Project, The Cornmarket Project, The Rural Social Scheme, The Rural Transport Scheme, Traveller Community Programmes, Meitheal, Homework Clubs and After School Groups along with the Rural Development Programme, the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance, FETAC Accredited Tr a i n i n g , Preparation for Work Courses and Local Employment Services Network. We x f o r d Local Development has also been responsible for the introduction of the Wexford Walking Trails, The Garden Trails, The Heritage Trail along with assisting the 1798 Centre and other major tourist attractions in the County such as Wells House, Loftus Hall and Hook Tourism, it has also benefited many individuals and companies and helped them realise their dream - such

as Featherbed Farm Icecream, Killowen Yogurt, Innovative Business Technology, The Rug Hub and Tasty Parlour Gluten Free Products Campile. We x f o r d Local Development and its staff of 81 has been working successfully and delivering in the County for over 23 years and in recent recessionary years it was the only port of call for many communities and individuals. The Board of WLD is a voluntary board of 24 Directors 8 of whom are elected community and voluntary sector representatives. As one of those voluntary sector representatives I have seen first hand the workings of WLD and I have been more than impressed with the way it carries out it`s business. It`s staff are diligent, hard working and dedicated to the people and the communities of County Wexford. They are thorough and professional, courteous and respectful and anxious to improve the lot of those they serve. The board is

made up of active, committed, enthusiastic, concerned people who are not afraid to put themselves out there to work for the betterment of the people they know and the places they live. Between them they have built up a wealth of knowledge, expertise and experience which I hope will not be lost to the County of Wexford. The new departure or new Alignment as it is called is part of the reform of local Government - to align the work of local government and the local development sector with particular emphasis on ` doing more with less` at local level and relying heavily on the voluntary element. All very engaging, aspirational and inclusive as long as the powers that be are careful to remember the old adage and don`t ` throw away the baby with the bath water`. Honouring their contribution… The 2nd May marked a special occasion for a number of Enniscorthy people as they were honoured with a civic Reception in The Presentation centre. The sport of boxing was doubly represented with the legendary Bernard Dunne being honoured for his contribution to boxing over a long number of years and John Tyrell being acclaimed for his Intermediate AllIreland success at 85kgs. “the Olde Order Changeth yielding place to the new and God fulfils himself in many ways lest one good custom should corrupt the worlde.” And a ‘good custom’ indeed it was – warts and all – Enniscorthy Town council. On Monday 26th May at the Presentation Art Centre having served the people of Enniscorthy for 115 years the death knell sounded for Enniscorthy Town Council in what was a celebration of members past and present and their contribution to the life and fabric of our Cathedral town tinged with sentiment, nostalgia and a very real element of sadness for the demise of one of the towns finest traditions. Outgoing Chairman Johnny Mythen began the proceedings emotively saying it was time to ‘Say Goodbye’ and he congratulated all who had been successful in their bid for seats on the new District Committees and he commiserated with those who hadn’t just made it. He thanked all the Staff of Enniscorthy Council for their work and dedication over the years and held a Minutes Silence for all deceased members particularly former Chairman the late Pat Cody. The newly elected, the unsuccessful and the outgoing spoke touchingly of their many years of enjoyment on Enniscorthy Town Council, their achievements, their highlights, their accomplishments, their fall outs, their friendships and their fondest memories, none more passionately and emotionally than Jackser Owens and Tom Moorehouse, who spoke with extreme sadness of the demise of the Council, particularly Mr. Owens who said that his family

had been involved with Enniscorthy Town Council for the last 35 years and in all of that time had done their best for the p e o p l e o f t h e t o w n . M r. Moorehouse said that people had always been his priority putting their happiness above bricks and mortar, and potholes and pavements. Following the speeches the last Enniscorthy Town Clerk Mr. Dave Minogue called on the Council members to make presentations to past and present elected members, members of staff both inside and outside with a very special mention for former Town Clerk Mr. Donal Minnock who was unable to attend due to illness. The elected members elected to have the Presentations made by the outgoing – Tom Moorehouse, Jackser Owens, Eamonn Doyle and Frank O’Connor. Member of the Dail and former Council member John Browne T.D. was called on to say a few poignant words as were Michael Bennett on behalf of the Business people of the town and Paddy Kavanagh on behalf of Ted Howlin who sent his apologies along with Minister Paul Kehoe. Former Chairman Sean Doyle gave all a most indebt history of Enniscorthy Town Council from its inception in 1899 to present day finishing with ‘no Government Minister should be allowed to discard Enniscorthy Town Council to the dustbin of history’. A sentiment that I would concur with completely. In Wexford and particularly in Enniscorthy we value and take pride in our traditions. Traditions that have sustained, nurtured, comforted us and made us what

we are. Our tradition sets us apart like it did in 1798 when Wexford declared herself a Republic, like it did in 1916 when Enniscorthy was the only free town in Ireland and proudly flew the tricolour over the Headquarters of the Volunteers - the Athenaeum and I as a citizen of Enniscorthy with all our history and tradition take exception to the `Powers that be` who don’t know me or my town deciding to do away with one of my traditions – my Town Council – without a bye your leave to the people of Enniscorthy and I dare to say `How dare they decide for me and the people of my town that we should no longer have a Town Council. As Chairperson of the Enniscorthy Community Forum and a volunteer with many Groups and Organisations in the town I want to take this opportunity publicly to express my most sincere thanks to all the members of the Town Council – past and present for always taking time out to attend the many events and functions over the years and to Chairmen past and present who added status and eminence to the occasions with their presence and their vocal contributions. Your support was always greatly appreciated and will be remembered. Finally, could I say this new system has already been tried and tested by our neighbours across the water who have become dissatisfied and are presently putting measures into place to revert to the old system of Town Councils. Surely, we should learn from their mistakes and not emulate them! – Maria Nolan

New Dawn for Enniscorthy

Building on the success of last y e a r ’s e v e n t t h e 2 0 1 4 Enniscorthy Darkness into Light 5K Walk for Pieta House and Suicide Prevention surpassed all expectations with numbers up to a staggering 1400! The organising committee of Rapparees/Starlights and Shamrocks GAA Clubs were delighted with the response to this most emotive and moving fundraiser and would like to express their sincere thanks to all who walked or ran the 5K route, to all who helped steward the event, to the Red Cross, Equine Search & Rescue, all who sponsored and donated water and goodies and to all who made continuous pots of tea and coffee through the night. A special word of thanks to Slaney Cycling for the use of their start/finish pop-up and to

Patricia Malone, the representative from Pieta House, was most complimentary of the Enniscorthy organising committee of John Hendrick, Seamus Wallace, Aoife Earle, Aine Gahan, PJ Howlin, Tom Boland and Maria Nolan and the tremendous community spirit in evidence everywhere she said. She was delighted with the turnout and the fact that numbers had increased significantly from last year and she has no doubt that the event will continue to grow and develop. Enniscorthy Gardai for all their help and assistance. Once again there was something remarkably poignant about the experience as people gathered in the early hours of Saturday 10th May to remember and pay tribute to those who have lost their lives to the darkness. Over 80,000 people took part in walks all over Ireland and the Irish diaspora took up the challenge in both London and Sydney creating an international element to the event. As people filed into the Shamrocks GAA Complex to leave or read messages on the Darkness Into Light Banner many were moved to tears by the impact of the occasion but it is a sadness tinged with great hope as they become immersed in and surrounded by the tremendous feel good factor of the experience.

One of Enniscorthy’s leading retailers is expanding… Smyths Arro is currently in the process of developing a connection between their main store on Rafter Street and their store on Weafer Street. The proprietors, Dermot and Betty Kavanagh, are very excited about the new work that is taking place and look forward to the extension opening on Friday 13th (hopefully not a bad omen!) of June. All are welcome on that day with lots of treats and special offers in-store.

The well known family business, Smyths Arro, is located in the centre of Enniscorthy, with a 200 space car park to the rear of the premises. The main entrance to the store is situated on Rafter Street, the town’s main thoroughfare. The establishment has been proudly serving the people of Co. Wexford since 1931. Smyths Arro was originally owned and run by Peter Smyth along with the help of his daughters. Hence the business to this day is still known as Peter Smyths, Enniscorthy. In 1979 a local businessman, Jack Kavanagh, purchased the company and continued to run the premises as a hardware store. According to current owners, Dermot and Betty Kavanagh, “customer service is always to the forefront in how we interact and serve our customers”. Smyths Arro has won many awards for this service including numerous "Golden ARRO Awards" which recog-

nise businesses within the ARRO franchise that deliver exceptional customer service to the public. “Our employees are experts in their fields of work, with a long and embedded history in the business. Professional customer service along with after care advice is always offered with respect to the large range of products which we carry in-store”, added Dermot. The shop is continually changing with new additions to departments being made over the years. One such development was the opening of their new store located on Weafer Street which contains a variety of products such as a large collection of new stoves including high quality, multi-fuel burning stoves. As the seasons change so too do the products, from heating products and Christmas stock during the Winter to garden furniture and BBQs during the Summer, along with everything else in between. The Kavanaghs believe that in these ever-changing times constant innovation is required

not only to serve their customers locally but to generate business throughout the country, so they have developed their website and e-commerce activity and now offer nationwide delivery. The latest development in Smyths Arro is the construction of an area linking both their Rafter Street and Weafer Street stores. You will now be able to park in the car-park and access their Weafer Street store from the main shop. This new extension will open to the public on Friday 13th June. The Kavanaghs have been major contributors to, and supporters of, the town of Enniscorthy through providing a superb store for all your hardware and giftware needs, providing employment for up to 17 people, and through their involvement with the Enniscorthy Business Association. Rathnure Panto Society are hitting the boards once again with their 5th brand new original summer musical, "Carnival Rock". The story takes place in the 1980's and is based around a Carnival, which has all the fun of the fair, but also combines a rock show into the mix for its paying customers. Andy, the carnival owner’s son, is a clown, and spends his days performing for the kids with his sidekick Mandy. Zeta, a young Italian girl, whose family also work for the carnival, has a major crush on Andy, and has a teddy, who she believes to be real called Mr. Tiddles. Across the hill, looking down on the fair live the very poor Harris family. Helena, Melanie and Carrie live in an old shack with their grandparents. One day, Carrie and Melanie sneak into the Carnival where Carrie meets and falls in love with Andy. However, her world falls apart when Andy is called up for service in the Army and must leave. They keep in contact, but there is evil at hand, which will change all their lives forever! There are over 60 people involved in this year's production, with some new young stars coming to the fore. There are over 20 songs, mixing rock with some of the best loved musical numbers. This is a show not to be missed!! Street Rhythms Dance Fest 2014 The Dance Fest will be on Friday 6thto Sunday 8th June 2014. On Friday evening there will be the GRAND PARADE, led by the Ballindaggin Pipe Band, from the Waterfront Car Park to the Market Square starting at 7.30pm. Look out for the Alice in Wonderland characters and the French Beggars in the parade. The parade will be followed by a STREET PARTY on the Square with music by Liam Sharkey. Who can resist the Crazy Frog with Liam?

After the Parade & Street Party on Friday evening, the festival kicks off on Saturday morning with the ever popular Baby Bop including visits byBarney, Peppa Pig, Mickey & Minnie Mouse and other children’s favourite characters. The Festival is bringing back some old favourites such as the Fairytales in the Castle on both Saturday

and Sunday afternoon. The antics of the Princesses in the Fairest of Them All, with a chance to vote for your favourite princess, and Donald & Daffy’s Birthday Bash will have you splitting your sides with laughter. Bring the children along for these fabulous and hugely popular shows at Enniscorthy Castle presented by the Rathnure Pantomime crew.

The traditional crafters will present their crafts on Rafter Street over the weekend on Saturday and Sunday. New crafts are being added again this year which will be of great interest to everybody. The Festival Facebook Picture Competition will be judged over the weekend and 3 Smartphones (worth €400 each) will be won by entrants to the competition. The Street Rhythms Dance Fest is in the late stages of planning and the programme of events for the weekend is on the opposite page. This is the 7th year and the festival goes from strength to strength with a lovely family atmosphere around the town throughout the weekend. Once again the organisers are providing something for everyone from young to old and in particular for families.

Eddie will be back to give a taste of Drumming in his workshop for anyone interested. This has always proved popular too.

Square Stage and the Castle Stage over the weekend includes: Reka of Sandstorm, a newly formed Bellydance and Eastern Dance troupe, who will delight audiences with Classical Egyptian dance, Bhangra dance fusion and Sword Dance fusion.

Inter national ac ts include Argentinian tango, Congolese dancing and Spanish flamenco with more being added all the time.

Ain’t Misbehavin’ will entertain us with their Jazz to start proceedings on Sunday. This is a great opportunity to grab a coffee and just sit back and enjoy the atmosphere of a live outdoor jazz session on the Market Square. This will be followed by our International Dance afternoon which showcases international and Irish dance acts on the stage in the Market Square. Sunday afternoon at the Castle belongs to the Fairytales once again with a twist on Donald & Daffy Duck’s Birthday Bash. There might even be a Fair Princess to be seen there!! Enniscorthy is definitely the place to be on the weekend of 6th to 8th June for a great weekend of craic and entertainment provided by the Street Rhythms crew.

Aine and Padraig Doyle recently hosted a Coffee Morning at their home for the Hospice Africa Uganda Fund recently. Over 100,000 people are dying in Uganda without any pain relief at the present time. One euro will pay for oral morphine for one person for a full week so the €900 raised at the Coffee Morning will go a long way to help those in need. John O’Connor was thrilled with the response and thanked Aine and Padraig for the tremendous work they had done. Aine Doyle said it was a pleasure to help those in need and she complimented and thanked all her friends and neighbours who were most generous not just with their financial donations but also with their time and skill providing her with many delicious delicacies for the event and also contributing items for the draw.

This award is part of the Room to Record music technology programme initiated by Wexford County Council in 2012, to enhance the opportunities available to Wexford’s emerging musical talent. Enniscorthy Choral Society news… Enniscorthy Choral Society after celebrating their 21st birthday in style with a celebration concert to a full house in beautiful St Mary’s church, have rounded off the season achieving their highest marks ever at the Cork International Choral competition. Wexford choirs did exceptionally well and ECS were delighted for Gorey Choral winning the jazz competition, ECS were hot on their heels achieving 3rd place with a score of 89 in the jazz competition with their newly choreographed, why do fools fall in love and moon river, the choir members shimmied and swayed and showaddywaddyed their way over the stage in City Hall.

The second competition was the sacred music and this was held in beautiful St. Finbarr’s Church, the choir performed Jesu Dulcis and Freindlend uns frieden and achieved a high score, first and second place went to Cork University choirs. The Choral Society are taking a break for the summer and will return to Colaiste Bride on Monday nights in September. “Freezin’ for a reason” On Saturday 21st June, between 10am-6pm, brave participants will get their chance to plunge into a freezing outdoor plunge pool all in the name of charity when Special Olympics & The Law Enforcement Torch Run bring their outdoor plunge pool to Enniscorthy Promenade for the second year. This fun and unique event will see participants jump into a freezing cold outdoor plunge pool or w h a t a b o u t “ To s s Yo u r Boss/Manager/Coach”, to raise much needed funds for the sports charity that supports people with an intellectual disability. A Feast of Food in Enniscorthy For the last six years crowds have thronged the Abbey Square in Enniscorthy, usually in glorious sunshine, to sample the best of Irish produce in the ALL IRELAND FARMERS MARKET competition. This event was established to recognise the vital role Farmers’ Markets play in supplying fresh, locally produced foods, and to create a showcase for regional speciality foods available throughout Ireland. The 7th All Ireland Farmers

Market Competition will take place on the weekend of the 28th and 29th of June, 2014. The competition is open to exhibitors from Farmers’ Markets across the 32 counties and it is amazing to see so much quality, Irish produce on show. The VTOS programme celebrates 25 years in operation this year. Located locally at the Bellefield GAA Complex the programme has delivered excellent programmes for 22 of those 25 years. There have been periods of great change but VTOS has been as perennial as the grass and has kept flowering for the students year after year. Tidy Town news With the closing date (at the time of writing) for this year’s N a t i o n a l Ti d y To w n Competition drawing nigh, the committee members of the Tidy Town Association and its Community Employment operatives are upping their efforts to have Enniscorthy looking spick and span. The campaign of litter picking by the committee and volunteers is going on apace and the Community Employment workers are seen every day on some of our approach roads dealing with litter and illegal dumping. It is seemingly an unending struggle to thwart the mindless minority in our community in the destruction they are causing to our environment. It appears that littering and illegal dumping is now worse than ever. The more one cleans up after dirty dumpers the more they are inclined to break the law. The mind-set might appear to be of the opinion that if there is someone there to clean up after them it is alright to dump and litter. Morgan Dunne told me some years ago of an incident he was involved in – he reprimanded a young man for throwing a plastic bottle on the street. The response was “F..... you, Morgan, Bobby

Wildes is paid to pick that up”. For Enniscorthy Town Council to haul all the debris collected from littering and dumping to a landfill site is costing €70,000 annually. The Court Report in our local press recently reported that an individual from Co. Wicklow received a heavy fine for dumping in the vicinity of Vinegar Hill. Could you believe it - all the way from Wicklow to dump on Vinegar Hill? RIKON’S Strategic Tourism Action Plan for Enniscorthy prepared for Enniscorthy Tourism is an excellent document but no doubt some of the success of the action plan will depend on a clean and tidy Enniscorthy. How often have you heard people saying ‘I must visit Westport, Killarney or Kenmare’ after they are announced as the winners of the All-Ireland Tidy Town Competition? It is definitely a major boost to a town to win the highest honour for cleanliness and tidiness. In those towns it is done by a dynamic community spirit and I have a belief that the people of Enniscorthy generally haven’t as yet entered into a frame of mind to improve the appearance of their town, particularly their own areas. I also believe that a sizable portion of the population of Enniscorthy

is not aware of the attractive town they live in. As Irish towns go Enniscorthy is a gem and with a little effort it can be dramatically improved. The ludicrous decision to abolish Enniscorthy Town Council will have detrimental effect on town governance and will remove the focus on the town. It is up to people with an interest in the town to come together and form a cohesive group to press the case for the town in the new setup and ensure that the finances that heretofore were utilised to improve the town and its infrastructure are not filched to pay for pretentious buildings elsew h e r e . T h e Ti d y To w n Association is willing to cooperate in such a venture. We i n t h e Ti d y To w n Association are going to press on regardless with our work. Templeshannon Community & Childcare Centre Fundraising Walk A fundraising walk in aid of Templeshannon Community & Childcare Centre is being held on Sunday 8th June 2014. The community centre provides a range of support services to individuals and groups in the local community. The walk will start from the Community Centre at 2.00pm where all participants will register. This walk will be towards Cooladine and it is for all levels

and ages. It can be 4km, 6km or 8km, whichever is suitable. This is expected to be a fun day for all the family. Buggies, dogs, all are welcome. Passenger figures at Waterford Airport for the first four months of 2014, January to April inclusive, show a 78% increase versus the same period in 2013. She proceeded to tell me about various amazing, almost incredulous stories of how people's pets, dogs, cats, horses...... the whole gambit communicated with her. The term 'horse whisperer' seems to me to be a little of a misnomer..... It should be more like 'horse listener'.... She spoke about how in all her life everything had to be scientifically proven to her or else she didn't have any faith in it... hey pretty much like most of us. Then her beloved horse began to get ill, wouldn’t stand up and she wanted to do absolutely everything for her. She was told that she would have to open up to her gifts herself, let go of all the 'facade' of everything having to be scientific and to just trust in what she was feeling. It was a real crisis for her and she didn't know what to do..... abandon a lifetime’s ideology and step into the unknown or risk losing her best friend (her horse!!). Well she took the plunge, opened up to a whole new way of working, her horse recovered and she embarked on a whole new journey. The stories she told me about the different animals, their talents, perceptions and their downright honesty just blew me away. I hung onto every word of those stories (she's a great storyteller!) and it gave me an insight into how intelligent these creatures that share our world are. We are the ones that are playing catch up... They have so much to teach us..... all we need to do is listen. n

In her book ‘Would You Marry A Farmer?’ Lorna Sixsmith recommends agricultural shows as one ideal place to meet your farmer and there were plenty of farmers to choose from at the recent Wo r l d S h e e p S h e a r i n g Championships in Gorey 22nd – 25th May. Sixsmith was there with her book in case anyone needed a manual! The Carlow-based mum of two is, of course, married to a farmer, Brian James. The couple have a dairy and beef farm in Co. Laois. Sixsmith started her farming blog in September 2011 to discuss farming issues and share what farming life is like in Ireland. The book offers anecdotes from her own farming life as well as reflecting on marriage to a farmer. ‘ Wo u l d Yo u M a r r y A Farmer?’ is a witty guide for anyone wishing to marry a farmer with tips on how to find a farmer and impress him with your own farming knowledge, lingo and farming chores ability. It also offers advice on what you need to know when you marry your dream farmer – from how to ‘stop a gap’, develop skills of telepathy, move cattle, milk cows, multi-task, settle into rural life, and become the ‘perfect farming wife’. Tips for ‘staying married to your farmer’ are also provided in a very tongue-in-

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond locAl elections Well it’s all over. We now have our new Municipal district council for the enniscorthy area made up as follows: James browne, barbara Anne Murphy and keith doyle of Fianna Fail, Paddy kavanagh, kathleen codd nolan and oliver Walshe of Fine Gael, Johnny Mythen of sinn Fein and John o’rourke, independent. this begins a new era in local government for all of us and anxious times lie ahead. The business community in Enniscorthy must be breathing a sigh of relief that at least one business person from town was elected in the person of Keith Doyle. And this nearly didn’t happen as the Fianna Fail strategy seemed to be to get James Browne, son of T.D. John Browne, elected at all costs (without being churlish I would have to ask that if the name was James Breen rather than James Browne would he have , based on his record as a member of the Town Council, gathered as many no. 1 votes. But then my mind goes back to 1962 when Ted Kennedy was first elected to the U.S. Senate and his defeated opponent asked the question ‘If his name was Edward Moore rather than Edward Moore Kennedy would he have been elected. Well it wasn’t and he was and as a result a great political career began.) Hopefully we will see the same outcome for James Browne which will benefit all the people of Enniscorthy. His massive vote of 1,900 first preferences nearly put paid to Keith,

leaving the hugely important retail sector of Enniscorthy without any representative on the council. None of the other councillors are involved in business in town, other than as employees, so therefore could not be as familiar with the day to day problems faced by the trade, which contributes hugely to the town and district, as Keith obviously is. We saw the departure of Jackser Owens who for many years represented the people of Enniscorthy and will be sorely missed. Politics is a cruel and brutal profession and all those who participate have great courage. We should thank those who failed to get elected, as well as those who did, for giving us the opportunity to exercise our democratic right to vote. Best wishes to all the members of the new council and let’s hope that they can keep all the commitments made over the past few months. AttAcks on older PeoPle A recent violent attack on an elderly person in her home in Enniscorthy is unfortunately only one of such incidents which have occurred in recent times. Those who carry out such attacks obviously have no fear whatever of the consequences of their actions. And why should they with the system of justice which we have in this country? If apprehended and brought before the courts they will probably have half the dogooders in the country there to speak up for them. The court will be told of traumatic childhoods, how deprived they were as they grew up and how this left them

brought about. Perfectly healthy children under six get medical cards while genuinely sick or dependant people have them withdrawn. Took a genius to come up with that one. I think his name is Reilly.

Therefore their crimes, however brutal and heinous, are understandable and they deserve the understanding of the courts rather than be condemned for their actions. They will then be given community service (which by the way they never do because no right thinking individual would let these gurriers within a mile of their house, business or club because they will use their time there to case the joint and tip off their friends as to how to rob it) and leave the court with wide grins on their faces. Once again , because most of them have numerous convictions, they will have literally given the two fingers to the judicial system. To cap it all you and I will have paid for their defence through the free legal aid system. Oh! The victim. I forgot about the victim.

Ah! not to worry everybody forgets about the victim. MedicAl cArds The Government’s decision to issue all children under six years of age with medical cards is a crazy scheme. This is at a time when discretionary and indeed other medical cards are being withdrawn from ill people who genuinely need them. These withdrawals are usually because some official somewhere decides that the recipient is no longer ill enough or in need enough to warrant such a card. The official who makes that decision is really doing so because his or her boss has decreed that budget savings must be made and medical cards must be culled. This is the reality which the policy being pursued by the present government has

APPeArAnces They say that first impressions are the most important when you meet someone or when you arrive at a new destination. With regard to Enniscorthy it has to be said that tremendous efforts are continuously being made to make the town look good and welcoming for visitors. The tireless efforts of the Tidy Towns Committee, individuals, businesses and the former Town Council are responsible for this despite the horrific recession which we are presently enduring. From the roundabouts at the entrances to the well kept shop fronts and in fairness the usually clean streets a great and positive image is projected to all who reside and visit this historic town . It should also be said that the smaller towns in the area such as Bunclody, Ferns and Camolin have come a long way over the past few years demonstrating that despite what we have and are enduring at the hands of bankers, politicians and others in authority the spirit of the people is more than resilient. disturbAnces on streets The recent disturbances on Lower Church Street Enniscorthy were shocking to say the least of it. This street is one of the oldest in town and up to recently was occupied in the

main by long term residents of the town many of whom still live there. However the influx of foreign nationals to Ireland has had a severe impact on the residential balance of this and many streets and areas in this country. Now I, like most other people, haven’t got a problem with this provided that those who move in, regardless of their nationality, behave themselves in a normal civilised manner. However I take grave exception to the fact that a group of people can come to this country, be welcomed, given social welfare and rent supplement at our expense (when many of our own Irish people can’t get such benefits) and then cause havoc on our streets. Those responsible for such incidents should be told by the authorities that they either shape up or ship out. There is little point in bringing these people to court where they will only get a slap on the wrist. There should be a system, in cases like this, where their social welfare and rent supplement is stopped and then they should be deported. Landlords also should be more careful as to who they let into their houses bearing in mind that they are responsible for the behaviour of their tenants. If you are one of those who believes that my view of this situation is extreme may I invite you to go and live in Church St. for a month and see what is happening there and then give your view. And by the way ask the long term residents of the street who are practically under siege as to what they think. n

Resisting tax on undrinkable water Residents of the Hazelwood estate in Bridgetown had no option left but to physically resist the installation of water meters outside their homes last month according to a local Sinn Féin representative. Mick Roche said that while his party were absolutely opposed to water charges, the idea of taxing what he called the undrinkable water in Hazelwood had added insult to injury. "I fully support the action t a k e n b y re s i d e n t s i n Hazelwood last week," Mr Roche said, "Its an unforgivable indictment of this present government that law abiding residents were forced to physically prevent the installation of water meters outside their homes. The Department of Transport in conjunction with Waterford Airport and the National Emergency Services held a national training exercise off the Waterford coastline on Wednesday, May 7. Waterford Airport was the base of operations for the National Exercise and over 180 personnel across nine emergency services including, The Irish Coastguard, The Civil Defence, The RNLI, The National Ambulance Service, An Garda Siochana, The

Waterford Fire Services and the Defence Forces including, the Army, Aer Corps and Irish Navy alongside Waterford Airport and the Department of Transport took part. In the afternoon of May 7 the emergency services combined to carry out an evacuation training scenario from the LE Eithne which was located three miles off Hook Head in the Waterford estuary. Commenting on their involvement within the training scenario, CEO at Waterford

Airport, Desmond O’Flynn said, “The Airport is delighted and honoured to have been chosen by the Irish Coastguard to be the launch point for this National Training Exercise. The Airport has a long association with marine rescue in the South and Southeast first of all with the Aer Corps since the mid-nineties and then the Irish Coastguard since 2002.” The exercise demonstrated the ability of the emergency services to work together in the event of major emergency.

It has been 16 years since Ireland hosted the world championships which took place in Gorey in 1998. The 2014 'Queen of the Wool' opening event was run in conjunction with Golden Shears Ireland and Wexford Macra. Twenty young ladies from Macra na Feirme clubs around the country participated in the competition and stage interviews open to the public took place in the ICM Sheep Shearing Dome in Gorey adjacent to Amber Springs hotel. She loves music and recently graduated from UCD with a degree in Animal Science. Michael Foley Dog Night Organising Committee and Enniscorthy Rugby Club were delighted with the large turnout at the recent Michael Foley Bursary Fundraising Event at Enniscorthy Dog Track. A great night was had by all with some excellent racing and popular winners, a lotta delicious sambos and cocktail sausages and a plethora of wonderful raffle prizes donated by many of the business premises of the town. MC for the event All Ireland Referee Dickie Murphy thanked all who donated prizes and all for coming and said once again it was amazing and uplifting to see Michael’s friends and family turnout in such numbers to commemorate his memory 7 years after his death a testament to his legacy. n

Strawberry Half Marathon, 5 Mile Race & 15K Walk The Strawberry Half Marathon takes place this year on 8th June starting at 10am on The Promenade in Enniscorthy. This is the fifth year of the event which comprises a half marathon, a 5 mile race and a 15K walk. There will also be a fun kiddies race along the Promenade. The race is hosted this year exclusively by Slaney Olympic AC as a club fundraiser. Entry fees have been kept to a minimum while still retaining the usual high standards of the race. Up to 5th June entry fees are: Half Marathon €25; 5 Mile

Race €15; 15K Walk €15. Online entry is available at runireland.com. Entry forms are also available in My Sport, Castle St, Enniscorthy. The event attracts everyone from the country’s top athletes to the club and fun runners. There are pacers for the half marathon at 1.30, 1.45 and 2.00 to help participants achieve their goals. More success for Enniscorthy Chess Club when earlier this month Joshua Redmond finished in fifth place at the Malahide Millenium tournament and was awarded the grading prize in the Under 14 category. During the award ceremony Leinster Chess Union tournament director Peter Scott presented Enniscorthy Chess Club with the Bodley League board prizes which they secured earlier in the season. The standard Citroen DS3 is a good-looking, great driving supermini, if a little pricey. But the updates on this special edition are purely cosmetic, if you will excuse the pun.

Alcantara trimmed sports seats. It looks good from the picture but it might not be to all tastes! There has been a lot of attention to detail and buyers will be delighted to find a special make up bag in the glove box containing some Benefit beauty products. It’s quite popular now for carmakers to team up with the fashion world to produce a special edition car with a few designer touches. Some of the best examples are

the Fiat 500 by Gucci, Citroen DS3 by Orla Kiely and the Seat Mii by Mango. But I think the Citroen DS3 by Benefit is the first collaboration with a cosmetics company. Citroen obviously think that they can sell a few of these special editions here. It’s no secret that these cars are aimed at women but the jury is still out on whether designer logos and lip balms are the best way for the motoring industry to interest female car buyers! n

ford focus review by Caroline Kidd “Women like white cars.” Those were the words of a colleague as I picked up the keys to the white Ford Focus I would be reviewing for the Slaney News. The whole time I was driving the Ford Focus, those words were going through my mind. White cars certainly stand out and are growing in popularity again. But I think they appeal to both men and women! To be honest I don’t think white is the most flattering colour for the Focus. But if I were to write off a car just because I didn’t like the colour, it might be time for the Slaney News to get a new car reviewer. The car impressed me in other ways. Beauty is more than skin deep. This latest Focus has really grown up and it feels like a much bigger car from the driver’s seat. The Focus is very sure of itself on the road. It’s a comfortable car and the handling is very good. The steering is precise and excellently weighted and this is where it leaves rivals behind. These things matter in my opinion, and if like me you spend a lot of time driving on rural roads,

Ford Focus you will find that it is a very reassuring and enjoyable car to drive. The model I tested had a 1.6 litre TDCi diesel engine that was ideal for long journeys. Economy is good and I averaged just under 60mpg during my time with the car. It’s not as punchy or quiet as some rivals with similarly sized engines like the Peugeot 308 or Honda Civic, but it’s still an excellent cruiser. If you prefer petrol to diesel power, the Focus is also available with Ford’s excellent 1.0 100bhp EcoBoost petrol engine. The driving position is spot on and it’s easy to get comfortable behind the wheel of the Focus. But it’s a shame that the cabin has not been given a little more attention.

It’s functional and I like the sporty looking instrument dials, but the centre console looks very big and cluttered and could do with a more quality finish. There is ample room for driver and passengers in the Focus and decent rear leg and headroom too. The boot is a little on the small side at 277 litres. But it is a practical shape and a full size spare wheel is included. I drove the Edition model which is a trim level up from the base model. Equipment on the car was good including Ford’s SYNC system that allows you to make calls and operate the radio/music via voice recognition and steering wheel mounted controls. 16” alloy wheels, air condi-

tioning, electric front windows, ABS, ESP, 6 airbags and remote central locking are also fitted. Higher specced cars in Zetec and Titanium trims add more equipment and exterior updates like chrome trim and more dramatic looking alloy wheels. Though the current model has been around since 2011 and is due an update next year, the Focus is still one of the best cars to drive in its class. It lacks a bit of the style and finish of some rivals, and family buyers might look elsewhere for a bigger boot, but it is still consistently a popular choice for Irish motorists – regardless of colour! Poems by the Slaney will be a monthly poetry evening with an open mic format. The next one takes place at 8pm on Thursday the 12th of June. It is open to poets and non-

poets and one can read one’s own writing or read poems from famous poets like Shelley Keats or W.B.Yeats or just sit back and enjoy this nice relaxing evening. The inaugural Poems by the Slaney was a great success and there was plenty of coffee and tea and wine served by the lovely manageress Anzelika Mihejeva.

The Davitts Country Showband have released the old Marty Robbins single as their new single. Entitled white Sports Coat, this song is sung by Joe’s nephew who plays keyboards and alto sax with the band. The Davitts are on the road a long time and this band are one of the best country bands in Ireland. Hailing from Ferns the Davitts play up and down the country and have played the Rhu Glenn in Waterford and have played across the pond in England. Under the guidance of lead singer Joe on sax, keyboard and guitar, the Davitts live up to their name. If you’re not familiar with their new single White Sports Coat it was a hit for Marty Robbins in the 1950s. It’s available on Youtube and iTunes.

Shane Kenny launches album Around Wexford with Patrick Hogan Shane Kenny and Brownstone Station launched their new album on Saturday the 3rd of May in the Wexford Arts Centre with special guest support on the night from local artists The Fulcrum Effect and Ripcord 64. The band’s second album titled 'Eight Miles Out' follows on from the release of 3 singles 'Rolls off your tongue', 'Threw it all away' and 'Desert Road' through Florida based record label Musik and Film. It’s official Wexford now has a Literary Festival at Enniscorthy on Friday 27th/Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th June. Launched on Friday night 16th May at the Presentation Art Centre by Wexford Ambassador and RTE Presenter Anne Doyle - Focal - has been established to celebrate the wealth of literary talent that Wexford has in abundance. The only imponderable is why it hasn’t happened sooner. The aim of the Organising Committee of Focal - Niall Wall, Colum Coomey, Jarlath Glynn, Maria Nolan, Anne Gilpin, Richie Cotter, Mairead Linneen and Carmel Harrington - is to recognise and acclaim the achievements of Wexford writers and poets and make the Literary Festival a highlight

on the Irish and International Calendars as an annual event. Writers and Poets from Enniscorthy, Wexford, Ireland and Overseas will be part of an exciting Programme of Events which will be held in the beautiful Presentation Art Centre, historic Enniscorthy Castle and state of the art Enniscorthy Library and will include Master Classes with Authors, Playwrights, and Poets that are designed to encourage and foster aspiring writers. These writers will have an opportunity to book a one on one slot with a renowned Literary Agent where they can pitch their ideas, their stories and their manuscripts and as Maria Nolan said who knows ‘we may uncover the next Colm Toibin, Peter Murphy, Billy Roche, John Banville or Eoin Colfer.’

Multi award winning US Poet, Drucilla Wall will give a talk on the art of writing poetry. Drucilla, from St. Louis in USA, is a regular visitor to Wexford. She has earned awards and fellowships including the Mari Sandoz Prairie Schooner Short Story Award, the Western Literature Association Willa Pilla Prize for Humor in Writing, and University of Nebraska Fling and Larson Fellowship. 10.15 – 11.15 Masterclass ‘Step back in time’. Following the Booker Prize successes of Hilary Mantel and Eleanor Catton, the historical novel is very much back in vogue. However, writing one comes with its own set of challenges. Wexford author Andrew Hughes will give a talk on writing Historical Fiction. He has written a number of plays, including The Wexford Trilogy. He has also written screenplay of Trojan Eddie and published a novel, Tumbling Down, and a book of short stories. 2.45 – 3.45 ‘I’ve written a masterpiece, now what?’ - Panel Discussion. A panel discussion chaired by Colm Coomey with writers Billy Roche, Andrew Hughes, LynnMarie Hulsman and Carmel Harrington. poetry has finally found a place in Enniscorthy. at nosh + Coffee on 8th May a splendid and most relaxing evening was had by all who turned up for a right treat. Thanks to denis Collins, with a little help from myself, this event had its first outing at nosh, and we are looking forward to our next reading which takes place on 12th June. poets and readers including Chris Black, Joe neal, Mary Cotter, etc took on the awesome task of reading some of their best works. Joe neal came to us from half way up a mountain in north Wales with his Spider poem. denis Collins gave us some of his poems and welcomed one and all to this new home of poetry at nosh + Coffee. Tell your friends and everybody to come and partake of this event. i promise you will be welcomed with a big, poetic smile and a cup of tea or coffee. a special thanks to Marie newport for the venue and to anzelika for giving us our food and wine for the evening at nosh. Wexford resident writer Jackie Hayden has had his script about the Welsh poet dylan Thomas released on Cd by Fflach records in Wales to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Thomas this year. The script was read for the recording by the Welsh archdruid Jim parc nest. as Hayden explains, “The Cd was originally released as part of my book a Map of Love-around Wales With dylan Thomas, and the response to it was so positive that one of the top record companies in Wales decided to put it out as a separate item. it was recorded in the very room where dylan Thomas was born in Swansea, and as a long-term fan of the poet that was a terrific experience for me.” Hayden has contributed extensive sleeve notes to the Cd which also has a range of photographs relevant to the poet and taken by Wyn Jones. Fflach records is run by Wyn’s brother richard, and both are regular visitors to Wexford. Jim parc nest is also a familiar name to the Wexford literary as he impressed many when he spoke at the launch of Hayden’s book at Wexford arts Centre in 2012. Something to smile about Following on from our very successful inaugural productions – a Tinkers wedding and ritual for Dolls last year at the The Presentation Centre – Enniscorthy Drama is delighted to announce that this year they are staging two summer plays to give the local and the visitor to the town alike something to smile about in what is affectionately known as the ‘Silly Season’. And what more appropriate work to commence with than Ray and Michael Cooney’s hilarious farce – Tom, Dick & Harry – which tells the story of 3 amusing siblings in the vein of the very popular TV Comedy Only Fools & Horses. Tom and his wife are about to adopt a baby and his brothers are anxious to do what they can to help set out to create a good impression on the woman from the Adoption Agency who is coming to interview the perspective adoptive parents. However, Dick has stashed boxes of smuggled brandy and cigarettes at his brothers house and Harry has somehow arrived with a cadaver that he has taken illegally from a medical school! This is slapstick at it`s very best and a must for all who love a good chuckle. The ideal summer distraction. Of the play Mamet said, "We are in a real estate office. The four salesemen have only several days to establish their position on the sales graph, the board. The competiton centers around the leads, with each man trying desperately to get the best ones." "You won't hear much bet-

The play is filled with the spiralling obscenity and comic bluster of real estate salesmen caught off-guard; yet underneath that there is fear and desperation... a chillingly funny indictment of a world in which you are what you sell." New Slaney Writing… WHAT A LIE a spoken-word poem by Caitlin Clauson It’s not a real smile. She just puts it on because she doesn’t want to open the book of secrets buried deep within her heart. Depressed to a point where even looking into the mirror causes yet another reason to cry.

Every day, to be judged by the clothes on her back and not by what’s within. They laugh. They screwed up her life so much she never has a chance of getting anywhere. Her work here is done.

The pills sitting temptingly in the medicine cabinet.

The medicine cabinet door open. Her heart hammering too fast. Wiping the tear from her cheek she’s careful not to touch the swollen eye. No more.

Worthless, fat, ugly, stupid, that’s all she is; well at least that’s all she thinks she is. Insults don’t sting… what a lie.

Flowers around the coffin as it’s laid into the damp earth. The parents morn. Society says it’s a pity.

The words echo through her head, every word a stab in her chest. Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me… yeah… what a lie.

Think before you talk Because believe it or not Words hurt. n

The scars on her back from the belts she’s been whipped with. And she thought belts were used to hold things up, like dreams floating through the sky only to be thrown down by the tears that fall from Heaven. Pretend. Day after day she pretends not to notice the suffering. Her parents tell her to get over it. Told so many times she’s ugly, there’s no way there’s any beauty in her life. It’s not too bad….what a lie.

Donal Ryan visits Bunclody Library Best-selling Tipperary writer Donal Ryan, author of The Spinning Heart and The Thing about December, gave a very entertaining reading to an enthusiastic, full-house audience at Bunclody Library on Saturday 10th May. Donal started by describing Bunclody as the holiday destination of his youth, explaining that his father’s sister, Donal’s

aunt Carmel O’Reilly lives in Bunclody and they regularly spent summer holidays at “Aunty Carmel’s” as children. Donal later thanked Carmel, who was in the audience, for encouraging his interest in reading and writing by buying him treasured birthday presents of a large Webster’s dictionary and a full set of encyclopedia as a young boy.

Donal read moving and humorous extracts from his recent novel The Thing About December and some stories from a collection of short stories he is working on. Donal is also working on two other novels.
