The main educational organisations in Enniscorthy dedicated to second chance education / upskilling for adults, are coming together under one (impressive) roof at Gonzaga House, Upper Weafer Street. Formerly known as St John of God’s but better known now as the home of ‘The Wilds’ café, this large and impressive building will house Enniscorthy VTOS (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme), BTEI (Back to Education Initiative) and Adult Literacy, which will make it a one-stop-shop for adults wishing to get back into education. The new centre will be fully operational by the end of November and we’ll carry a full report in next month’s issue. n

THE SLANEY NEWS IS NOW AVAILABLE IN 220 OUTLETS!

When it comes to education, Enniscorthy is certainly well served. At primary level, both St Senan’s and St Aidan’s have had huge extensions over recent years. At second level the story is the same with both Enniscorthy Vocational College and the CBS having had recent major extensions (read about the CBS on page 6). At third level we’re fortunate in having Wexford Campus IT Carlow a mere 30 minutes drive away. And who knows maybe at some stage in the future the old St. Senan’s psychiatric hospital might end up as a third level college? Now wouldn’t that be a major asset for both the educational and economic life of the town? At the adult education level we now have a major new facility in Enniscorthy with Gonzaga House, Upper Weafer Street, becoming a one-stop-shop for adults seeking to get back into education / upskilling. Alll courses there are free and cover diverse areas like Computers, Business, Catering, Photography, etc. It’s never too late to avail of a second chance at education so call in soon to learn more. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Looking ahead, we highlight some of the things Enniscorthy has to offer this coming Christmas – see pages 6 and 16-17. And please try to Shop Local as much as possible over the festive season.

50th Strawberry Fair – plans for 2017 the committees of enniscorthy strawberry Fair and enniscorthy street rhythms dance Festival are delighted to announce that they are joining forces and pooling ideas and energies to make the 50th anniversary of the town's most famous festival a memorable success. Chairman of Strawberry Fair Cyril Wheelock welcomed the merger, which will see the town host the 50th Strawberry Fair Street Rhythms Festival over the June Bank Holiday weekend 2017. 'The town needs to pull out all the stops for the 50th Anniversary of one of the country's best known Festivals,' Cyril said, 'and with Street Rhythms on board providing their very varied and acclaimed daytime entertainment Strawberry Fair can concentrate on taking the festival back to its roots and back on to the streets of Enniscorthy’. Street Rhythms Chairperson Bernie Morrissey

said that her committee are ‘happy to come on board for the 50th Anniversary and will be endeavouring to make it a huge success and perhaps even re-invent or inject new life into the historic Fair that we all love and grew up with'.

Town Manager Padraig O'Gorman pointed out that there were very few festivals running as long as Strawberry Fair, 'indeed only two come to mind – The Rose of Tralee and The Lisdoonvarna Bachelor Festival so we certainly have

something to celebrate in 2017 and with the All Ireland Farmers Market adding the very popular food dimension to the mix there is no reason why it can't be a mega weekend for the town and the 50th Anniversary', he said.

Many ideas are already being floated for the momentous Festival including Celebrity Opening, Special Souvenir Brochure with complete history of the Fair, 7-aside Soccer Tournament, Pub Talent & Charades, Steam

One of the most exciting ideas to emerge is the plan to invite the 49 previous Strawberry Queens back on stage at Market Square. This is a call out to all of you former Strawberry Queens out there to get in touch and let the organisers know if you would be available on Saturday 3rd June 2017. enniscorthy musical society will present Little Shop of Horrors as their musical production for 2016 in coláiste bríde, enniscorthy, next easter Based on the 1986 film starring Rick Moranis, it tells the story of meek flower shop assistant Seymour who pines for co-worker Audrey. During a total eclipse of the sun, he discovers a strange and unusual plant that he names Audrey 2 and puts on display. Soon Audrey 2 is attracting record business to the previously struggling store but the catch is that this talking plant needs human blood to survive! Even after feeding on Audrey's nasty boyfriend, the plant is still not satisfied and continues to cry out ‘feed me’ to an increasingly desperate Seymour. Can there possibly be a happy ending in store? if you would be interested in taking part in this show, auditions will take place in coláiste bríde on thursday 24th november 2016 at 8pm. all welcome! n

microsoFt windows deFender: Microsoft’s built-in malware protection has slowly been improving over the years, and we think it’s finally worth a look (albeit briefly). The software’s monitoring system recommends actions when urgent attention is required, but interruptions are minimal, helping you stay on task without having to revert to an annoying dialogue box every five minutes. The software supports 64-bit platforms, updates virus definitions quickly, and sports a easily-navigable user interface regardless of your operating system. Christmas in Enniscorthy CBS enniscorthy municipal district council together with enniscorthy & district chamber and the enniscorthy business association (eba) are working hard to make christmas in enniscorthy 2016 the best ever. The annual christmas fundraising race night at enniscorthy dog track on Thursday 22nd September had a wonderful turnout and that support has laid the financial foundation for much of what will be on offer in the town over Christmas. The centrepiece of Christmas in Enniscorthy will be the amazing santa’s enchanted castle which will bring thousands of children and adults into the town starting on 24th November and continuing right up to 23rd December. The town itself will be lit better than ever following substantial investment in additional festive lighting. Make sure to be in town on 26th November as Santa officially turns on the lights and there will be lots of family entertainment that day also. The Enniscorthy Business Association is organising its annual gala christmas raffle in which businesses in the town provide a €50 voucher for their shop/business. With a target of 60 businesses this will result in having €3,000 in prizes. For every €10 a person spends in a participating business they will get a token or stamp on their Raffle Card and when they collect 10 tokens/stamps to fill the card, the card will be entered in the Draw which will take place in Market Square on 24th December. Full details, updates etc are available on the ‘Enjoy

Don’t forget the enniscorthy gift Voucher is a great way to give a present or reward employees this Christmas. See full details on www.enniscorthygiftvoucher.ie There will be lots of entertainment on the streets of the town in the run-up to Christmas including various choirs and a children’s Christmas carousel. Local transition year students will be setting up stalls around the town centre to add to the Christmas atmosphere.

A children’s art competition with a ‘Christmas in Enniscorthy’ theme is being organised by Byrne’s Bookstore. See ‘Enjoy Enniscorthy’ on Facebook for updates. The town’s businesses are grateful to Enniscorthy Municipal District which is kindly funding a promotional week for the town on South East Radio, so stay tuned. F i n a l l y, t h e e b a a n d chamber are strongly encouraging all business owners in town, and their staff, to avoid parking on the town centre streets so as to free up those prime places for people coming into town to shop. this matter was also raised at the october enniscorthy municipal district meeting and a strong line against business owners and their employees “feeding the meters” can now be expected from the local community wardens. n

on the 14th october enniscorthy cbs officially opened its new, state-of-theart school extension. the opening was performed by carmel considine, sister of the late brother ned Kerrigan, in whose honour the new extension is named: Áras Kerrigan. Br. Kerrigan was a past pupil of the school who was shot dead in 1995 while working as a missionary in Sierra Leone during the civil war there. The school maintains a strong link with Sierra Leone with many students having visited that country on school trips and visitors from Sierra Leone have also been made welcome in the CBS. The extension, which cost €500,000, is fully fitted out with all the latest technology, and consists of five classrooms and two resource rooms which give staff and students much-needed additional space to accommodate the growing numbers attending the school. Principal John Ryan thanked local politicians Paul Kehoe, John Browne and Brendan Howlin and was glad all of them were able to be present at the opening. Construction on the extension began over a year ago using Pádraig Smith architects from Wicklow and Reade Construction and was completed with minimum disruption to the school community during the construction phase. Bishop Denis Brennan blessed the new building and all present, including some of Br Kerrigan’s classmates from his schooldays in the CBS, were delighted to have witnessed the dawn of a new era at CBS Enniscorthy. n

The Wexford/Savannah Axis larry byrne, director of club choice ireland, and cathy Keane, owner of heritage tours wexford, were busy promoting the county last week to a delegation from savannah, georgia, the second such group to visit our county this year in connection with the wexford/savannah link. Joe Marinelli, President of Visit Savannah, Jo Piani, Director UK & Ireland, Visit Savannah, Bill Miles, President & CEO of Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce and Dr. Howard Keeley, Director of the Centre of Irish Research & Teaching at Georgia Southern University, were here in Wexford exploring our extraordinary connection and viewing the county’s attractions. 20% of Savannah’s population is of Irish extraction and it boasts the second largest St.

Patrick’s Day Parade in the world and approximately 68% of that 20% are of Wexford extraction! How did this come about you might wonder. Well throughout the 19th century, a large number of Wexfordians left Ireland for Savannah, Georgia, when the Graves Shipping Company based in New Ross, Co. Wexford, opened an office there. This led to many Wexford natives settling in the southern city. One of those Wexfordians was William Kehoe who emigrated to America with his mother, father, four brothers, and three sisters in 1842. The family settled in the Old Fort District of Savannah and William became an apprentice in an iron foundry working his way up to foreman, and eventually he bought the foundry and, in

the aftermath of WW I, he built a new foundry and quickly became one of Savannah's most successful and prominent businessmen, encouraging many of his fellow Wexfordians to follow him to Savannah. Earlier this year the hunt for the Iron Mogul’s birthplace brought students from the city of Savannah to the small rural village of Monamolin, where they visited nearby churches and cemeteries for proof of the Kehoe family’s residence in the area. While members of the Kehoe family may have attended church in Monamolin, records indicated that the Kehoes were tenant farmers in the nearby townland of Mounthoward, which was the students’ next stop for the day. A brief chat with a local Mounthoward farmer ultimately led the group to the

exact spot where Kehoe’s home in Ireland once stood in a rustic setting near the sea. The Savannah Irish have maintained not just their sense of national identity but also a strong feeling for their roots in the south eastern corner of Ireland. The Wexford/Savannah Axis, a new initiative being worked on by Wexford Tourism and Club Choice Ireland, will bring closer together the communities of the south-eastern corner of Ireland and the southeastern corner of the United States based on our shared ancestry and history. Larry Byrne of Club Choice Ireland has been diligently putting together an alliance of some of the best hotels, resorts and golf clubs in the east and southeast of Ireland and said that the members of the Savannah del-

Concerns about future of rail line proposals by the national transport authority to consider closing the rosslare rail line south of gorey must be strongly resisted, according to wexford county councillor, malcolm byrne. Malcolm warned that while this has been mooted in the past, the fact it is now seriously on the agenda is very worrying. "Iarnrod Eireann has lost significant levels of funding in recent years and we need to invest in public transport. However, to cut off Rosslare Europort and most of County Wexford from the rail network would be hugely detrimental to the county." "Having campaigned to extend the commuter service to

James Browne TD

the county in the past, I will be enormously disappointed if this move were to go ahead." He added, however, that one of the best things people in Co. Wexford could do now was to use the rail service. "It is very difficult to complain when the service is not being used. This was a reason given why the Rosslare to Waterford line closed. Wexford people need to use the trains." "Equally, Iarnrod Eireann need to do more to make the service attractive. The trains are often slow and overcrowded for much of the route to and from Wicklow and could also be made more comfortable for the longer distances." Meanwhile, local Fianna Fáil TD James Browne has called on Minister for Transport Shane Ross to set out his vision for the future of Ireland’s rail infrastructure. The Fianna Fáil TD says the development of the Wexford rail service must form part of the Minister’s strategy. “The transport sector was completely overlooked in Budget 2017 after Minister Ross failed to secure any meaningful additional resources. Now less than two weeks later it transpires that Minister Ross has been sit-

ting on an explosive report which raises serious questions for the future of our rail network. The question has to be asked, why didn’t Minister Ross push for additional resources given the serious issues facing the transport sector? “Numerous international holiday guides point out that the Wexford rail line is one of the most scenic journeys in Europe. People in the local community rely on the route and it is an important piece of infrastructure for our tourism industry. The service cannot be allowed to be diminished. Instead we need to see investment to secure the future of the Wexford rail line,” concluded Deputy Browne. n

South East Radio fame. Items included a framed drawing donated by wildlife artist, Don Conroy, and John Giles kindly donated three (personally signed) replica jerseys representing his football career – Manchester United 1963 Cup Final, Leeds United 1972 Centenary Cup Final, and a Republic of Ireland 1970’s team jersey. There were also lots of great raffle prizes donated by supportive Wexford businesses. Models on the night included many of the county’s finest GAA stars – male and female. Clothes shops involved included Glamour, Helen’s Home Shop, Modern Fashions, Ottiva, Put A Bow On It, Sofia’s Choice, and Yellow Rose. Finishing Touches and Scissor Sisterz provided the expert makeup and hair skills.

Musical entertainment was supplied by the wonderful Enniscorthy Gospel Choir who “raised the roof” for the occasion. As a spectacle and as a night’s entertainment the show was a huge success and, even more importantly, from a financial point of view, the show raised an incredible €14,800 for Wexford Hospice Homecare. With so many Wexford people being supported at home by Wexford Hospice Homecare and with so many miles being covered 365 days of the year by the WHH team, and with all their care being provided free of charge, Wexford Hospice Homecare needs our support more than ever, so a contribution of €14,800 is hugely significant. Keara Doran of Scissor Sisterz told the Slaney News,

”We are overwhelmed with the support we received from everyone and we'd like to thank everyone who attended, our sponsors, people who donated money who couldn't attend, Finishing Touches, the boutiques, models, Liam Sharkey, Eamon Mernagh, Jimmy Gahan, Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy Gospel Choir, everyone who helped and of course RTE's stars Marietta Doran, Tracy Piggott and Marty Morrissey. The show could not have happened without each and everyone of them. Last night showed how supportive businesses are in Enniscorthy so for everyone out there PLEASE SHOP LOCAL!” – a wonderful message as we head into the Christmas shopping season. n

Having a ball in Bellefield!

Halloween was a busy weekend at Bellefield GAA for young and old. There were ghouls, goblins, witches, wizards and werewolves aplenty along with superheroes and heroines of every description at the U-8 end of season party hosted by Adrian Fenlon and his wonderful team of mentors and parents on Saturday 29th October in the Clubhouse. This time it was Liam Sharkey, not Adrian Fenlon, who was putting them through their paces as the little ones danced, giggled, hopped and bopped to popular tunes. There were prizes galore and something for everyone in the audience and mammies and daddies seemed to be having as good a time as their young charges as all went home tired but happy. Well done to all involved, it has been a wonderful season Adrian and gang, keep up the good work, the children are having a ball – Maria Nolan.

Rathnure Panto countdown As the number of sleeps to Christmas Day reduces, and the amount of shopping days left to go are ticked off on the calendar, the countdown is definitely on to the 21st Rathnure Christmas Panto. It has been a hectic year for the organisation, with 20th Anniversary celebrations, a sellout Summer Musical, and their first drama selling out in two locations. But now it is time to revisit the society's longest running format, the Annual Christmas Panto. "The Reddest Of Them All" begins with Goldilocks, who now lives with the Three Bears, arriving home to find a letter which was sent to her by Little Red Riding Hood. Red has been through her fair share of adventure and the letter tells all. The Bears beg to hear the story. So

Goldilocks reveals how it all began for Red. The story begins as Snow White's evil Stepmother and Queen has been banished from the kingdom for all of her evil deeds. As she goes deeper into the woods, she stumbles across the Woodcutter’s cottage. The Woodcutter is left to raise his daughter alone, as his wife passed away. The Evil Queen begs for mercy and asks the Woodcutter to take her in and give her shelter. As time goes by, they all live happily together, until one day, a chance meeting with a strange Pirate offers the Queen the chance to be evil again, and she accepts. Who can help save the day? Well it is the Rathnure Panto, so who else but Ariel,The Little Mermaid (as you've never seen her before...), a Boy named Gregory, the Lion from the Wizard of Oz

and the Genie of the Lamp! Confused? Don't worry, it'll all make sense....eventually.... In a first-time change to the panto schedule, this year's show will run for seven nights before Christmas, and three the week after. There are also early shows available, but shows are beginning to sell out in record time, so book now! The dates and times are as follows: December Dec 11th @ 6pm, 18th @ 5.30pm, 29th @ 6.30pm, 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 19th, 28th and 30th @7.45pm. The Box Office numbers are 087-0687801 (10am-2pm) and 087-6954112 (6pm-9.30pm) daily. Also keep an eye on the Facebook page for further details. So don't delay, book your seats now for The Rathnure Christmas Panto, "The Reddest Of Them All!" n

It’s been a massive undertaking for St Michael’s Theatre Musical Society, New Ross, taking on the challenge of being the first Irish musical society to produce the spectacular stage version of the hugely popular 80's film – Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This, of course, is a society that has never shirked a challenge in the past and under the guidance of director Kevin Kennedy, musical director Philip Kennedy and choreographer Claire Kickham, it has developed into one of the country's finest and most respected musical societies. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels brings to the stage the mischievous relationship between Lawrence Jameson and Freddy Benson, two rival conmen vying for supremacy in the French Riviera. The cast is headed up by Ciarán Dunphy as Lawrence, Keith Flanagan as Freddie and Ashley Doran as Christine. They are ably assisted by James Dobbs, Teresa Buckley and Joanne McCabe. The show will begin its run with a preview on Sunday 6th November at 6pm and will then run from Wednesday 9th to Saturday 12th November with nightly shows

On the catwalk.

Fabulously classy is the only way to describe Wexford Style 2016 held on Saturday 1st October at the iconic Wexford County Council glass building. This marvellous showcase of Wexford fashion has become an eagerly awaited and much anticipated event since its inception five years ago, and as fash-

ion stylist and TV presenter Marietta Doran reminded the 600 strong audience, she was the first MC at the very beautiful and historic Johnstown Castle and was delighted to be asked back for Saturday night’s event. A splendid fashion occasion she said ‘to rival any in Ireland, Paris or Milan’. And she wasn`t wrong! O r g a n i s e d b y We x f o r d Chamber of Commerce and s p o n s o re d b y D o n o h o e s Mercedes Benz featuring some of Ireland’s top models, including Yomiko, Sarah McGovern and Teo Sultra, along with Jewellery Designer of the Year Blaithin Ennis and Ireland Eye Statement collection and fashion designer Kymaia, Wexford Style 2016 is right up there with the best of them. On arrival each of the 600 guests was treated to a Goodie Bag and a glass of bubbly sponsored by Westgate Design before taking their seats for the extravaganza of elegance

from 18 of Wexford’s most exciting fashion houses, from Gorey - Ruby Rouge, Liz Collins and Place, from Wexford - Ava, Carrig Donn, Empress, Frock, Panache, Pamela Scott, Runaway Bride, Si Jolie and Vintage Belle, from Enniscorthy - Ottiva and Eden Manor Bridal and from New Ross - Noreen O’Donnell. This was an evening of glamour and sophistication to whet the appetite of any serious fashionista and indeed judging by the appreciative oohs and aahs throughout the night it was most certainly achieving that goal and tremendous credit is due to Creative Director Keith Jordan for producing a show that everyone in Wexford can be proud of. The floral displays by Slaney Flowers were as creative and impressive and as aesthetically beautiful as the models and the collections, the angelic voice of Roisin Dempsey singing live to the bridal scenes

was a gifted innovation as was the introduction of a same-sex wedding scene where two male models joined hands and kissed on the catwalk going down a treat with the audience, but the real showstoppers were the fantastic kids from CorishWallace Performing Art School in Wexford and boy did they perform! No catwalk jitters there. These young models and performers of the future strutted their stuff for Babooskha Boutique with an enthusiasm and joie de vivre that brought the house down. Hair was by the awardwinning Alan Keville and his

team, male hair by Cutthroat Barbers and makeup by Gainfort Academy Hair and Beauty. With tickets at €35 and a packed house this year’s chos e n a n d w o r t h y c h a r i t y, Wexford Marine Watch, will benefit handsomely. A truly professional, well organised, well publicised and most enjoyable and entertaining affair and one that all in Wexford can be proud of and well done to Wexford Chamber, Keith Jordan and Deirdre Kehoe and DK Marketing, and I for one can’t wait to see what they are going to produce next year. – Maria Nolan

All eyes were on Wicklow last month as Oscar-winning director Anders Walter and double-Oscar-winning producer Kim Magnusson along with young Hollywood superstars, Madison Wolfe, Rory Jackson and Sydney Wade, came together to help launch the ‘South Eastern Creative Corridor’. The launch marked the first step in the programme which aims to create a vibrant, viable, and growing creative Audio Visual industry cluster in the region. The Local Enterprise Office (LEO) in Wicklow, in collaboration with Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford and Tipperary Local Enterprise Offices secured funding under the LEO Competitive Fund to implement the ‘South Eastern Creative Corridor’ programme. The overall objective of the programme is to encourage and support entrepreneurs and established SMEs who can sell services or products to the film industry or are operating in the film sector, to grow their businesses, internationalise and create new jobs in the region. One of the most exciting elements of the programme is the opportunity for applicants to avail of the €100,000 investment fund. Commenting on the programme, Tom Banville, Head of Enterprise with LEO Wexford, stated “This is exciting for us and everyone involved and we are delighted to get started. We believe that the project has real potential to add value to the region, in addition to the LEO Grant Aid of €100,000, we also aim to create 40 new jobs in the region and get a minimum of 40 companies with strong growth potential to participate in the LEO mentoring programme by 2017.” n

Local accountancy firm goes global On Wednesday 5th October the Enniscorthy business community came together with Hughes Blake – the well-known Enniscorthy accountancy firm, to celebrate its admittance to Baker Tilly International as its member firm in the Republic of Ireland, effective immediately. The celebratory event hosted in the Riverside Park Hotel was attended by Minister Paul Kehoe, who had the height of praise for Kevin and Neil Hughes for their hard work and dedication to not only their own business but have also been instrumental in bringing business and jobs to Enniscorthy. Minister Kehoe applauded Neil’s commitment to his company and his constant positive outlook on the economy through difficult times, describing him as one of the steadfast selfemployed people who stuck the pace and is hopefully now reaping the rewards of his foresight and endurance. ‘This new departure is a tremendous growth opportunity for Baker Tilly Hughes Blake while also benefiting business and employment in Wexford’, Paul said and concluded by thanking both Neil and Kevin Hughes for

always keeping Enniscorthy and Wexford close to their hearts. Having joined the Baker Tilly network, Managing Partner Neil Hughes said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity to bring more business and jobs back to Enniscorthy. As a full service firm, we are well positioned to work with Irish and international businesses across their audit, tax, corporate recovery, corporate finance, company secretarial and business advisory needs.’ Neil went on to thank his father Kevin and mother Margaret for their encourage-

ment and unwavering support, all the members of the Hughes/Blake team both in Dublin and Wexford saying that it was wonderful to work side by side with so many dedicated people and his colleagues on South East Radio stating that Morning Mix was great training for any situation. ’Things are beginning to happen again’, he said, ‘with many new initiatives for the South East and we earnestly hope that this new venture will help to bring as many of them as possible to Enniscorthy.’

‘Under the leadership of my partners Kieran McCarthy, Stephen McGivern and Alma O’Brien and all in the mana g e m e n t g ro u p , w e h a v e invested in building up experienced teams across each of these disciplines, and having welcomed 15 new team members to the Dublin office and 3 new members to the Enniscorthy team so far this year. Creating employment, it is something we will continue to do at an accelerated pace as we hire 60 additional people over the next three years,’ Neil Hughes added, and he paid tribute to all who ‘kept the lights on in County Wexford over the past couple of years’. Kevin Hughes thanked all for attending, he had great praise for his Enniscorthy staff particularly those who were with him from the very beginning – Aine Doyle and Marie Donohoe and all the local clients who had been loyal to him and the company for many, many years. He said he was immensely proud of what his son Neil had achieved and he looked forward to the future for Baker Tilly Hughes Blake and Enniscorthy. – Maria Nolan

Sam is in the news… Enniscorthy’s Sam McCauley, the man behind the national pharmacy chain bearing his name, was the subject of a indepth interview last month on the front page and an inside page of the Sunday Independent business section. During the course of the interview Mr McCauley mentioned the possibility of the company being floated on the Irish Stock Exchange or perhaps bringing in a new equity investor Mr. McCauley is looking

at ways to expand the business even further saying, “I don't see any reason why an Irish pharmacy group can't hold the same position as Musgraves or Dunnes Stores in the grocery market, in other words be right there with the market leaders.” The McCauley chain has recently added new shops in Navan and Tipperary bringing the total number to 30 and is now targeting an annual revenue of €90 million on the back of a welcome return to growth in the retail sector. n

We were often told in college 'prevention is always better than the cure' and the simple correct vaccination programme in time would have been enough. Leptospirosis is activated by the cold weather so now more so than any other is the high risk time. If in any doubt just give us a call or drop in and we'll work out if your pet needs it.

View from the Hill The MiLehouse We have often in this column sang the praises of those who keep Enniscorthy beautiful. Their great work was recently recognised and rightly so. One small area deserves special mention in my view. That is the Milehouse just outside the town where local residents over the years have created a place of beauty. A few short years ago the Milehouse was no more than a miserable little crossroads that we all passed through without comment. Now, thanks to the efforts of a dedicated group of locals, it is an area of significance. Their efforts are commented on by the majority of those who pass

that way and the work done and the brilliant upkeep is a credit to all concerned. LocaL counciLs There are moves afoot, we are told, to bring back our much lamented town councils. The removal of this tier of local government was a disgraceful act on behalf of a minister who had no regard for the wishes of the people. Spurious arguments were put forward that money would be saved and everything would become more efficient. This was all hogwash and those of us who over the years had got to know our local councillors, who were hard-

working and honest, only now realise what the loss of the town council means to an area like Enniscorthy urban district. Hopefully if we see the re-establishment of our councils a few new rules will apply. In reality a town council should be a voluntary body of local people elected by the people of the area on the lines of a community council. Its members should be strictly unpaid volunteers , except for specific vouched expenses. Political parties should be prohibited from contesting elections for these councils so as not to turn them into the usual political grooming ground for those with higher political ambitions. Extremely tight rules should apply to the amount candidates can spend in relation to election campaigns. This will enable every citizen to stand for election and fight a fair campaign. Members of the county council should be prohibited from membership to ensure that the new town councils are solely for the purpose of representing the town. In other words candidates would have to choose which council they wish to stand for. If they want the prestige and perks which go with membership of the county council well then

stick to that body and leave the community council to the towns’ volunteers. Also this would clearly distinguish between community councillors and county councillors who tend to be more political. I would imagine that many of those good people who currently give of their time free to such bodies as tidy towns, river rescue and other organisations but have no time for party politics would be candidates. The council should have statutory powers to allow it govern its area of jurisdiction and take independent decisions. There could be much more to this and the above is only scratching the surface of what a town council should be. Let’s hope that if the rumours are true that we will see something imaginative coming forward rather than a talking shop made up of politicans who push agendas rather than simply be there to represent the people of their town. Driving Going back to one of my favourite rants may bore some readers but I feel that all of us drivers have experienced the following. You are merrily driving to a destination with twenty minutes to spare over your normal journey time.

Suddenly you come up behind a backlog of traffic held up by a large agricultural vehicle ten or more cars ahead. This large vehicle could easily pull over on a margin at intervals to allow traffic to pass. But no. The cars behind have to, on a one-by-one basis, literally take their lives into their hands to try and get past this yoke and you are wondering if there is actually a driver in it at all. Looking in your own mirror you can see at least another ten or so cars and vans behind you with the more impatient ones bursting to get out. You are now in a very dangerous place and eventually you get up directly behind the large vehicle. Here, ensconced in his comfortable cabin, is a guy obviously listening to his radio or worse still as I have witnessed, on his phone, totally oblivious to the chaos behind him. You then must take the chance and pull out because of the pressure behind you and hope for the best. Others will follow and in complete frustration almost run you off the road to get out in front and make up lost time. These incidents are occurring on our busy secondary roads every day of the week. Despite radio advertising and urging from the I.F.A. and other

farming bodies a careless cohort of farmers and agricultural contractors totally ignore the advice to pull in and allow others to pass. The only solution to this problem that I can see is to ban these slow moving vehicles, of all sorts, from the roads between the hours of 7am and 9am and 5pm and 7pm when people are trying to get to and from work. The owners of these vehicles will argue that this is unfair as the majority of them are considerate road users. Well I say, Tough. Aren’t all laws brought in because a non-conforming minority are abusing some situation and this case should be no different. End of rant. We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

CAIM YOUTH CLUB… At this time of year with the Irish “summer” over, many people, young and old, look for something productive to do with their time. Youth clubs are a great way for young people to engage in social, sporting and fun activities. Ferns Diocesan Youth Service (FDYS) was established in 1965 in response to a need in the community for the provision of this type of activity for young people in the county. There are now over 40 FDYS youth clubs in the county, generally running from September to May. One of these clubs is Caim, just outside Enniscorthy. Caim Youth Club is one of the longest established youth clubs

in County Wexford and is affiliated to the FDYS and Youth Work Ireland. There are two clubs: Junior club, for 3rd to 6th class primary school students, 7.00-8.30pm, and Senior club, for all secondary school students, 8.30-10.30pm. We are open most Friday nights in Caim Community Centre, where members can come to meet their friends, make new friends, and learn or try new activities. They can relax, play pool, darts, table tennis, try a hand at some arts and crafts, and much more. In addition, there are cinema / bowling trips, day trips, junior inter club parties, and senior discos during the club year.

Caim Youth Club is a place which encourages participation in the activities and events that the club provides, although it is not compulsory. These include competitions between other clubs at county and All-Ireland level, such as soccer, basketball, variety competitions etc. Older club members are also given the opportunity to become junior leaders through participating in a senior members’ training programme, which aims to increase their communication, teamwork and leadership skills. A committee is elected by the parents, and leaders are all trained by FDYS and garda vet-

ted, to ensure that it’s fully compliant with child protection guidelines. The club is a vibrant supporter of the local community, arranging the senior citizens Christmas party, working with other local committees for BBQs and events during the year. To find out more about Caim Youth Club, please go along any Friday night to the community centre, or contact the youth club Textline 087-7530958, or the fanpage: Facebook.com/ caimyouthclub or their website www.caimyouthclub.ie. They would be delighted to hear from you.

HOOK LIGHTHOUSE… The board and staff at hook Lighthouse are thrilled that official data from ireland’s leading provider of automated footfall monitoring services shows a figure of 210,000 visitors during the first nine months of 2016. Commenting on the news, Ann Waters, Manager at Hook Lighthouse, said, “This is fantastic news both for Hook Lighthouse and for Wexford. All of the team here have been working very hard to develop our visitor experience and to

grow our visitor numbers and we are delighted to see this hard work reap rewards.” “Earlier this year we were very much aware that it was phenomenally busy at Hook Lighthouse, we launched our brand new Ireland’s Ancient East tour in Spring and this gave our early season a real boost; that boost has continued right throughout the summer and well into autumn with some visitors waiting long periods of time to enjoy a tour of the Lighthouse. We are very con-

scious of this and shortly we plan to enable visitors to prebook their own tour times online in advance of their visit to the Lighthouse, this will help us to anticipate demand and will we believe ultimately grow visitor numbers even further in the future,” Ann concluded. Hook Lighthouse is now the most popular tourism attraction in Wexford and is the third most popular in the Southeast after the Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny Castle. To put these figures in context, the visitor

numbers to Hook Lighthouse are on par with the number of visitors to Dublin Castle. Failte Ireland has also revealed their latest tourism data statistics and in 2015 some 221,000 overseas tourists visited Wexford with an economic impact of €65 million for the county. Also in 2015 Wexford saw 679,000 domestic tourists visit Wexford with an economic impact of €140 million. For further information on Hook Lighthouse see www.hookheritage.ie n

The new premises means that Wexford Design House is now up and running again and Tate Guerin Gallery will also continue hosting exhibitions for both established and emerging artists as local businessman Jim Nolan, who runs Rafters restaurant in the same building, has offered the wall space for Paula’s exhibitions and there is also a display and sales area within the space. Jim also launched his new business, The Gallery Café, which will operate during the same hours as Tate Guerin Gallery and Wexford Design House so the joint effort is set to become a hub of activity. Caroline gets motoring: Suzuki SX4 S-Cross The market for petrol crossovers may be small but suzuki is hoping to cash in on it with the launch of a revamped suzuki sX4 scross with two brand new, efficient and powerful ‘Boosterjet’ turbo petrol engines. Elsewhere the styling has been updated to give the Suzuki SX4 S-Cross a more SUV-like stance on the road and key changes include a more upright front end with bold new chrome bar grille, and new lights front and back. Inside the basic cabin layout is the same but there is a new soft touch plastic dashboard pad, which looks more pleasing and gives the SCross a more high quality feel despite the hard plastics that still feature above and below, and in the door panels. Interior space remains the same with seating for five and a 430 litre boot. Suzuki has really shaken up the engine line-up to keep up with competitors (and

End Unfair Surcharge on Motorists – Mythen enniscorthy Municipal District sinn Féin councillor Johnny Mythen is calling for the removal of the extra cost to motorists who, due to financial constraints on their family budgets, have to pay their motor tax by instalments. “Penalising drivers because they can only pay quarterly or halfyearly is in fact penalising the less well-off motorist and is making it harder for drivers to keep their vehicles lawfully on the road,” Cllr Mythen said.

Suzuki SX4 S-Cross perhaps surpass them too). The 1.6-litre diesel (120hp) will still be offered but Suzuki are keen to push their new petrol engines – a 1.0-litre (111hp) and 1.4-litre (150hp) - because they are an attractive low entry price into the range, but efficient and powerful for their size thanks to the addition of a turbo. The 1.0-litre Boosterjet returns up to 56mpg and emissions

of 113g CO2 means it qualifies for motor tax of €200 per year. Three trim levels will be offered (SZ4, SZ-T and SZ5), while automatic and manual gearboxes are available as well as a four wheel drive option. Standard equipment includes Bluetooth, digital radio, air conditioning, 16inch alloy wheels, cruise control with speed limiter, heated

door mirrors and four electric windows. Pricing starts at €20,995 for the SX4 S-Cross 1.0-litre Boosterjet in SZ4 trim. SZ-T models start at €24,995 and SZ5 start at €28,495. The diesel comes in at €26,995. The new Suzuki SX4 SCross is in Suzuki dealers right now. – Caroline Kidd

“The Irish government claws back roughly €70 million through this added penalty surcharge. In the current age of e-commerce, when 70% of motorists use the online system to pay for their motor tax thus saving millions on administration fees, then surely these savings can be passed back to the motorists through removing these unfair surcharges. “I have been contacted by many young families who stated that they simply cannot afford to tax the family car for a full year due to the cost of living increases but still have no choice but to pay these unfair surcharges because they need their car for work. Our tax system must be fair and used for the benefit of all citizens. "Sinn Féin objectives are to provide relief to families, workers and small businesses by tackling the many inequalities that exist in our current tax system such as the motor tax surcharges.” n

Caroline gets motoring jaguar f-paCe

rEviEW by carolinE KiDD The new Jaguar F-Pace was one of the most anticipated new cars of 2016 and is the brand’s first ever suv. We’re all familiar with Jaguar as the purveyor of luxury saloons and sports cars, but an SUV is a new direction for the brand. The F-Pace has some well-established rivals in the form of offerings from BMW, Audi, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz, so the F-Pace has to be good to stand out in that company. Jaguar is billing the new F-Pace as ‘the practical sports car’ and much has been made of the F-Pace’s performance pedigree. From recent drives in the XE and XF saloons, I would say a sporty driving character is one of Jaguar’s key selling points, so it was with great anticipation that I hopped into the new F-Pace. SUVs are not particularly known for their dynamic capabilities so would the FPace be any different? The styling of the F-Pace holds great promise, every bit as evocative as a classic Jaguar sports car, with a level of drama and dynamism that is missing from many rivals.

Jaguar F-Pace The big, upright grille and slim LED headlamps make a bold statement, while at the back there are many similarities to be drawn with the F-Type coupé. Not a bad thing at all. Inside the F-Pace is a spacious five seat family car with large footwells and a 630 litre boot. The centre console has a slick design built around a touchscreen system to control media, Bluetooth connection and navigation. The cabin is

awash with contemporary finishes and the overall quality secures the F-Pace’s position at the premium end of the mid-size SUV segment. On the road the F-Pace does not disappoint. It has the same lightweight construction as the the XE and XF saloons and is 80% aluminium. You can really get a sense of that car-like DNA when driving the F-Pace and also in the way you as a driver are positioned in the car in

relation to the steering wheel, controls and pedals. The centre tunnel is also quite high for an SUV so it all enhances the sports car feel behind the wheel. The F-Pace is available as a two or four wheel drive vehicle and even four wheel drive models operate as rear wheel drive vehicles in normal driving conditions. The F-Pace has an athletic and playful character on the road that belies its sheer bulk. The

steering is fluid and precise, and torque vectoring comes as standard so you can pull the F-Pace into bends with a great deal of precision and there’s no loss of stability. It’s remarkably flat and balanced through corners for a high riding SUV. The suspension is firm enough to keep it tight in the corners, but there is also compliancy there to keep things mostly smooth and comfortable in the cabin. In terms of engines, a 2.0litre diesel with 180hp is the best for economy and attractively priced from €44,100 for a rear wheel drive model. Four wheel drive models start from €47,800. For the more performance oriented buyer there is a 300hp 3.0-litre V6 diesel (from €69,700) and a 380hp 3.0-litre V6 petrol (from €78,000). The 2.0-litre diesel is the most appealing for the Irish market. It’s quick, quiet and smooth while motor tax is just €280 per year for the four wheel drive model. The official economy is close to 53mpg, while I returned 43mpg during my time with the car.

The new F-Pace really does deliver as a practical, fashionable and quite cool SUV. The 2.0-litre diesel might leave performance oriented buyers wanting but it ticks the boxes for efficiency and competitive pricing, and ensures that this car should easily find its market and really boost Jaguar sales. But what sets the F-Pace apart is that it is a true driver’s car, and I didn’t think that was always possible with an SUV. The Jaguar F-Pace is an exciting SUV to drive and performs with the poise and intent of a much sportier vehicle. Jaguar has stayed true to their sports car roots in the development of their first ever SUV and it really shows in the new F-Pace. Model tested: Jaguar F-Pace 2.0 AWD Portfolio Auto. Price: €56,210 (range starts at €44,100). Engine: 2.0-litre turbo diesel. Power: 180hp. 0-100km/h: 8.7 seconds. Economy: 53.3mpg. CO2 emissions: 139g/km. Tax band: €280 per year. n

There’s so much happening on stage in enniscorthy over the coming months it’s hard to know where to start but let’s begin with the widely anticipated enniscorthy Musical society (eMs) panto, Peter Pan, which will be staged in enniscorthy’s athenaeum from 8th to 10th December at 8pm and on 10th and 11th at 3pm. so expect to hear “he’s behind you” and “oh no he’s not” for the first time at The athenaeum in thirty years. The production team has announced a fantastic cast to bring this hilarious panto to Enniscorthy audiences. delighted to bring it to The Athenaeum – "the theatrical heart of the our town and our historic home”. There is great interest already in tickets and everyone is encouraged to book early when the booking office opens on the 5th December at The Athenaeum 3-6pm, or phone 085-8342140. be Little Shop of Horrors. This ambitious production will take place in Coláiste Bríde, Enniscorthy, next Easter, directed by Paul Walsh who did such a wonderful job with the EMS production of Seussical the Musical earlier this year. Based on the 1986 film starring Rick Moranis, Little Shop of Horrors tells the story of meek flower shop assistant Seymour who pines for coworker Audrey. During a total eclipse of the sun, he discovers a strange and unusual plant that he names Audrey 2 and puts on display. Soon Audrey

2 is attracting record business to the previously struggling store but the catch is that this talking plant needs human blood to survive! Even after feeding on Audrey's nasty boyfriend, the plant is still not satisfied and continues to cry out ‘feed me’ to an increasingly desperate Seymour. Can there possibly be a happy ending in store? If you would like to take part in this show, auditions will take place in Coláiste Bríde on Thursday 24th November 2016 at 8pm. All welcome! Rehearsals will begin after Christmas. Keep an eye on the EMS website: www.edms.ie. Enniscorthy sports hub The Enniscorthy Sports Hub at Cherry Orchard now has a new carpark opposite the Hub ready for use which can accommodate 200 cars. The next stage is the development of dressing rooms, meeting area and toilets to be followed later on by an adjacent viewing stand when national funding becomes available. Enniscorthy Municipal District is also looking at ways to make the facility more attractive for schools to use including the introduction of a very affordable annual fee. The general public are also encourageed to use the facility at a cost of €2 but are required to wear appropriate footwear. The Hub is a fantastic faciity which very few towns in Ireland can match, so the Council would like to see it being used more but would also like users to follow the onsite instructions to ensure the proper use of the track. An event coming up there shortly is the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust 5k Run/Walk, which will take place on the running track at The Hub on Sunday 6th November. The Walk starts at 10.30am, the Run at 10.45am. Donation only. All are welcome to support this great cause and to try out the new track.

Caroline launches her new book Caroline (sixth from right in front row) performing with her colleagues from Enniscorthy Choral Society.

Local author Caroline Busher launched her much anticipated debut novel, The Ghosts of Magnificent Children, at a packed venue, “The Wilds”, last month. Among those present to show support for Caroline were family, friends, the wonderfully engaging Michael Fortune who formally launched the book, as well as the Enniscorthy Choral Society who performed in honour of Caroline who is one of their members, and Damian Byrne of Byrne’s bookshop who Caroline singled out for all the support Byrne’s bookshop provides to all local authors. Caroline’s book has been critically acclaimed locally and nationally and we look forward to Caroline joining the growing number of Wexford authors currently experiencing major international success.

Caroline gets the seal of approval from Richie Cotter.

As Reader in Residence Caroline will deliver a programme of activities designed to promote literacy and enjoyment of reading and library usage in children and young people. The residency will involve engagement with children through community groups and schools, centred round their local library. It will also provide opportunities for parents and children to explore and enjoy reading and other family literacy activities together. Caroline is no stranger to libraries and has been a champion for books and reading for children for many years. She graduated with a First Class Honours MA in Creative Writing from UCD and specialised in children’s literature. “It is an honour and a privilege for me to be working alongside library staff in their wonderful libraries and out in the community over the coming months” said Caroline. “As Reader in Residence I will be working to complement the amazing literacy work that is currently being carried out by Wexford County Council’s Library Service.”

New Slaney Writing… New Slaney Writing… The requieM by norah Clifford Kelly This poem finished second in the recent Focal Literary Festival Poetry Competition. The Easter Lily bowed her head in mourning for the newly dead the earth cocooned embalmed entombed their memories...immortal wounds. Kilmainham jail screamed primal tale ...Ancestors who forged the trail

in reverential silence thread in fearsome dread all other prisoners one by one counted volleys of the gun. The sky grew dark the dawn closed in the shooting dead at 6.am the eerie quiet the dreadful din the heavy thud of life and limb. Outside the prison walls lay stark the buildings still on fire did spark Aiséiri-Ashes blown across the width and depth of foam.

The Gaelic cry resounded far for each man a falling star Eire's plight lit up the night with new-found pride in freedom fight she must retrieve her own birth-right.
