BACK UP YOUR DATA FROM AN ANDROID DEVICE

it’s not a matter of if you should back up your data, but how. this is pretty easy on desktops nowadays thanks to cloud storage providers offering apps that automatically sync your files in the background, but this functionality is noticeably absent when you install their official mobile apps. no matter. there are numerous ways to automatically back up your data from an android device, and with the following apps, you should be able to do so in whichever one works best for you. dropsync: Let’s get the easiest solutions out of the way first. If you want something that can replicate Dropbox’s desktop client on your mobile phone, developer MetaCtrl has what you’re looking for. The app goes by the name of Dropsync, and it works in the background, quietly syncing local folders with their remote equivalents the same way we wish the official Dropbox app would. Not only does Dropsync do its job well, it comes with a completely thorough set of options. The core functionality is available for free, but if you want to remove ads, sync multiple folders (or your entire Dropbox), or upload large files, you will need to buy the pro key for €6.00 Foldersync: Let’s say neither Dropbox, Google Drive, nor Box stores your files. In that case, you should check out FolderSync. This app includes those three options but also supports Microsoft OneDrive, SugarSync, Copy.net, and many others. The app lets you automatically sync using FTP or Windows Share on your local network. With the right router, creating your own mini-cloud is as easy as plugging in a hard drive. The free app lets you test things out, but it only supports two accounts and lacks sync filters. To remove limits and add Taster support, you’re going to want the €3.00 pro version. Bittorrent sync: One way to get around relying on the cloud (or creating your own) is to simply sync your files across each device that needs them. As long as your electronics don’t all die or go missing at once, your data is accounted for, and you still get the convenience of not having to manually move documents and media from one machine to another. BitTorrent Sync can help you make this happen. The BitTorrent Sync app is still relatively young, and my experience with it has been mixed, but it’s still worth a shot if you’re more interested in syncing your data than backing it up. Just keep in mind that if you accidentally delete a file in one location, it will disappear from all of them, so you’re still kind of living on the wild side. On the other hand, it’s completely free. n

Colm expressed his delight with the portrait saying that he has been a fan of artist Aidan Hickey for a very long time and was thrilled that he wanted to do this. Colm seemed suitably impressed with the remarkable likeness recounting a little story about a portrait of James Joyce by a modernist painter, which for all the world looked like a circle on paper and bore no resemblance to Joyce or indeed any other human being. On viewing the portrait James Joyce’s father is reputed to have said, ‘James is looking a bit older in this alright.’ Colm also told the story of a door in Eccles Street that

Enniscorthy Camera Club success the irish photographic Federation’s 34th national audio Visual championships

A Christmas event with a difference enniscorthy and monart union of parishes will be holding a christmas tree Festival in st. mary’s church, enniscorthy, from thursday 1st until sunday 4th december. Rev Nicola Halford, Rector of Enniscorthy and Monart Union, compares the festival to a flower festival. She says, “It seeks to tell the story of Christmas and the story of our local community through the medium of Christmas trees. Each tree will be uniquely made or decorated to tell its part in the story.” Businesses, organisations, sports teams, charities, churches and schools have all agreed to submit Christmas trees, decorated in such a way that it tells the story of that group and their role in the community. There will be plenty of creativity and exciting ideas on display in the church. The festival’s aim is to create a community celebration of Christmas and at the same time to raise funds for both St. Vincent de Paul and St Mary's Church fund. Entrance is free

When bride-to-be Lynne Cahill of Rectory Heights, Enniscorthy, was told by doctors at St. Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, that her mother, Catherine, would be unable to her attend her wedding at St. Senan's Parish in Enniscorthy in November, she seriously considered postponing her happy day to a later date in the hope her mother might have recovered sufficiently enough to attend. She hadn't reckoned on the resourcefulness of Parish Priest,

Rev. Fr. Paddy Banville, however, who was determined nothing was going to stand in Lynn's way of marrying her long time sweetheart Sean Nolan from nearby Monageer. He immediately decided if Catherine couldn't attend the wedding in person, he would bring the bride and groom to Dublin to see Catherine in hospital and set about bringing his plan to fruition with the help of fellow parishoners from the closeknit parish community.
A plan was devised and with the help of local businessman, Padraig Donohoe of Alcast Ltd., a helicopter was hired to fly the couple, the couple's daughter Ava, the bride's father, Larry, and local Parish Priest Fr. Banville from the company's headquarters in Clonhaston, to St. Vincent's Hospital, Dublin, where a tearful but happy reunion took place. The wedding party then flew back to Enniscorthy in time to join over 170 guests at a reception in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy. n

Hospital Ball raises over €21,000 for “MRI – Now” Project Saturday the 19th of November was a night for celebration for all of the wonderful staff at Wexford General Hospital (WGH), as over 400 people gathered for the 2016 Hospital Ball in Clayton Whites Hotel. A very glamourous evening with all men in black tie and the ladies sparkled. WGH staff successfully held an annual “Hospital Ball” up to the mid-nineties and this year’s return of the Hospital Ball was a co-ordinated effort, in conjunction with “Friends of Wexford General Hospital”, along with hospital management Lily Byrnes and Professor Quigley, and a number of hospital staff members, have successfully ensured a return of the Hospital Ball to answer the immediate need for an MRI scanner – the Wexford “MRI – Now” project. The WGH staff members include Brian McGrath, Gina Monahan, Peter Murphy and Roisin Ffrench all of whom successfully promoted to bring back this festive event, and over a year ago the committee engaged Catriona Murphy to volunteer as the event and fundraising coordinator. A lucky lady took away €1,000 cash door prize to spend as she wishes and every table received prizes with many spot prizes given away also. Professor Colm Quigley, with great pride, praised, “The 400 people who attended the Hospital Ball in aid of the Wexford MRI Now project raising over €21,000 for this much needed equipment and the real added value of this event has been the tremendous boost to staff morale… and we look forward to the same event next year.” Ciarán Sheridan, Chairman of Friends of Wexford General Hospital attended the event also saying, “This is such a great start to our fundraising efforts for the new MRI, a vital piece of new equipment that is urgently needed in Wexford Hospital. With upwards of 4,000 MRI scans being performed outside of the county each year, this is a vital resource that needs to be based within our Hospital, locally and now. The HSE has agreed to fund the bulk of the cost on this MRI, however we need to raise €250,000 urgently, so that we can commit to the ordering of this scanner and get plans approved for the construction of the specific structure for this super magnet. We need everyone’s help on this, if any workplace or club or social group are looking for a really worthwhile cause for some charitable work in this festive period, then this is without doubt the most worthy cause there is.” The Hospital Ball Committee wish to thank everyone who assisted and are especially grateful to the hotel staff at Clayton Whites Hotel, the corporate table sponsors Wexford County Council, Sam McCauleys, AIB and many supporting local businesses, GP’s, County Council Representatives who all contributed with donations all of which were featured on the advertising screens during the event. Silver Service at Enniscorthy Library the sixty-strong audience at enniscorthy library on thursday 10th november were treated to a top drawer event with the delightfully witty entertainer and raconteur Francis Brennan. The author, hotelier and TV personality enchanted with tales from his young entrepreneurnial days beginning at twelve years of age selling festive logs door to door at Christmas time and moving on aged fourteen to provide a babysitting service dropping flyers to six hundred houses. With forty-two people working for him it seems Francis Brennan was always destined to be in business and was always working his way towards owning his own hotel which happened in 1980 when he opened the Park Hotel in Kenmare and things have gone from strength to strength for him since. Now he is also bringing out his own range of bed linen in conjunction with Dunnes

and Best Item – Ciara Cullinane and Chorus “God help the outcasts” from The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
There seems to be no end to this man’s talents nor indeed to his energy and enthusiasm. When I asked him what he did to relax he said he never feels the need to relax, ‘I love what I do, I love my life and if I were to die in the morning I would have to say that I have had a fantastic life.’ What a wonderful quote from a wonderfully happy man who draws his curtains each morning on beautiful Kenmare and thanks God that he lives and works there. Rathnure Panto countdown As the number of sleeps to Christmas Day reduces, and the amount of shopping days left to go are ticked off on the calendar, the countdown is definitely on to the 21st Rathnure Christmas Panto. It has been a hectic year for the organisation, with 20th Anniversary celebrations, a sellout Summer Musical, and their first drama selling out in two locations. But now it is time to revisit the society's longest running format, the Annual Christmas Panto. "The Reddest Of Them All" begins with Goldilocks, who now lives with the Three Bears, arriving home to find a letter which was sent to her by Little Red Riding Hood. Red has been through her fair share of adventure and the letter tells all. The Bears beg to hear the story. So
Goldilocks reveals how it all began for Red. The story begins as Snow White's evil Stepmother and Queen has been banished from the kingdom for all of her evil deeds. As she goes deeper into the woods, she stumbles across the Woodcutter’s cottage. The Woodcutter is left to raise his daughter alone, as his wife passed away. The Evil Queen begs for mercy and asks the Woodcutter to take her in and give her shelter. As time goes by, they all live happily together, until one day, a chance meeting with a strange Pirate offers the Queen the chance to be evil again, and she accepts. Who can help save the day? Well it is the Rathnure Panto, so who else but Ariel,The Little Mermaid (as you've never seen her before...), a Boy named Gregory, the Lion from the Wizard of Oz

CHRISTMAS BAZAAR AT THE GAELSCOIL ENNISCORTHY the 4th annual bazaar will be held on sunday 4th December from 12 noon to 4.30pm at the gaelscoil enniscorthy, Drumgoold. there will be stalls selling arts and crafts, a bake sale, bottle stall, raffle and auction on the day. santa claus will be there along with Mrs claus, bouncy castles, face painting, games and a photo booth! Blossom Bakes along with 'The Cookshop' are offering a Cupcake Workshop on the day. This will be a fun class where kids will be taught how to decorate a Christmas themed cupcake. They will learn how to pipe buttercream, make their own decoration with sugar paste and be as creative as they wish. The cost of the workshop is €3 and they will take home their own cupcake in a pod decorated by themselves. There’s something for
all the family at the Christmas Bazaar and you can even buy your Christmas tree on the day!

Ain’t Misbehavin launch new CD On 19th November local quartet, Ain’t misbehavin, launched their new CD “Ch’boom” at a well-attended launch in The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy. Ain’t Misbehavin is a quartet of musicians playing, promoting and enjoying Swing-era music with a hint of Gypsy Jazz. It’s feelgood music, romantic, optimistic and engaging, bringing to mind lazy sum-
mer afternoons and glasses of wine! T h e b a n d f e a t u re s Enniscorthy native Eddie Crean on vocals and rhythm guitar; long-time Enniscorthy resident Richard King on lead guitar; Wexford native Vicky Clancy on clarinet and saxophone and, from Arklow, Tony Thompson on bass. They have played at many festivals over recent years including Enniscorthy Street
Rhythms, Enniscorthy Strawberry Fest, Bray Jazz Festival, Armagh Blues Festival, Glasthule Bloomsday and Laois Garden Festival and well as numerous receptions and intimate café gigs. “Ch’Boom” is their second CD and includes a mixture of jazz standards and original tunes. Peter Pan – The Panto is set to fly Rehearsals for Enniscorthy musical Society’s Peter Pan – The Panto which will staged in Enniscorthy’s Athenaeum from 8th to 11th December this year, are in full swing. The fantastic cast are all set to bring the exciting panto to Enniscorthy audiences. Leading the talented cast are Edward O'Dowd and Emma O'Leary as Peter Pan and Tinkerbell. Local rising stars, Cailín Mullett, Christopher Kelly and Sean Milbourne join the Boy Who Will Never Grow Up on his adventures, as Wendy, Michael and John Darling. No panto would be complete without some evil villains and they come in the form of the nasty Captain Hook (Jim Kealy)
and mean Ms Hardigan (Therese Canavan Bolger). These veteran actors are joined by comedy team Caroline O'Connell, Alice Medcalf and Corah Dobbs, playing the hilarious Widow Smeesmoo, and her two dimwitted sons, Smee and Smoo. The Music Network Artist Residency Programme 2017 has been developed to provide the selected musician with the resources to stage a 6-date concert series to take place within a 3 to 12 month timeframe, in collaboration with Music Network, the Arts Department of Wexford County Council and the National Opera House, Wexford. It is intended that this programme will tie in with the strategic arts plans of the local authority and the National Opera House and support the work of a range of community music groups, making high quality live music available and accessible to people throughout County Wexford, while supporting the career development of musicians. Music Network is now calling for Expressions of Interest in the 2017 Programme. The Guidelines document may be downloaded from musicnetwork.ie/musicians/opportunities. The fairest of them all The spirit of Christmas made its first appearance in Enniscorthy on 4th November as the very beautiful and very lovely 2014 Rose of Tralee maria Walsh arrived in town to launch Santa’s Enchanted Castle and the Christmas lights at Templeshannon. The charming 55th Rose of Tralee added glamour, energy and style to the festive occasion, and was the perfect choice for the festive photoshoot, looking stunning in seasonal red and wearing a warm, wide smile quickly winning the hearts of all present from the tiny Elf Jessica to Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council Oliver Walsh – no relation by the way. Following proceedings at the Castle it was over to Treacy’s Hotel for some hot cinnamon coffee and delicious gingerbread men where curator of Enniscorthy Castle Moira O’Gorman said that bookings for the Enchanted Castle would far surpass last year’s total attendance of 2,000. Good news for the Castle and Enniscorthy and well done to Moira and the Castle staff. Agri-food tourism boost Minister Paul Kehoe TD has welcomed the recent announcement that Wexford County Council has been granted €36,530 for development of the Enniscorthy Agri-food Tourism Project. The funding is part of a €445,000 package for initiatives to promote and develop agri-food tourism projects in rural areas, under the CEDRA Rural Innovation and Development Fund. Minister Kehoe said, “ The objective of this project is to build on the success of Enniscorthy Rockin’ Food Festival and to develop and brand Enniscorthy as a “Food Tourism Destination” to national and international visitors across 12 months of the year. “The Enniscorthy food tourism project is develop-
ing a strategy to promote the agri-food tourism sector in Enniscorthy. This will involve a major rebranding of the town as a food tourism destination, with clear benefits to the rural community, delivering a road map that will outline and action the key tasks that give clear commercial return to the town, food businesses and community, improving promotion of the agri-tourism sector locally, increasing turnover and support of local food and craft businesses and increasing tourism: visitors from overseas and domestic food tourism markets. “Key ambitions of the project will be to create a calendar of new food experiences across the town that will develop all year round business, seek to expand and develop the
Rockin' Food festival from a 2 day to 4 day festival and to develop a second food market festival in the winter months. “The project plans to work with local artisan food operators to participate and create new, innovate culinary experiences for visitors, develop a logo, brand and digital platforms to promote Enniscorthy as a Food Tourism Destination, link with new and exciting food producers to create memorable stories about people, produce, place, and marketing Enniscorthy as a key food destination within the Ancient East region and encourage and develop quality culinary tourism experiences across all areas restaurants, artisan food and craft markets, new trails, food tours and dinearound initiatives.” n

Exciting outlook for local AV sector A new initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices in Wicklow, Wexford, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Carlow local authorities came to fruition last month when dozens of representatives from the audio visual (AV) sector and other business leaders attended the South Eastern Creative Corridor (SECC) Symposium at Wicklow County Campus. The SECC aims to support the development and growth of enterprises operating within or providing products and services to the AV sector, with the overall objective of creating a vibrant, viable, creative Audio Visual industry cluster across the region. This will be achieved by the LEO Offices from each of
the above counties working together to encourage and support entrepreneurs and established SMEs who can sell services or products to the audio visual industry or are operating in the sector to grow their businesses, internationalise and create new jobs in the region. The year-long initiative, which was kick-started at the event, offers enterprise owners an intensive programme of business development including training, mentoring, networking and access to finance. The objective is to assist participating businesses to increase sales, improve profitability, explore new markets and take full advantage of the opportunities in the creative audio visual sector and
it is expected that the outcomes of the programme will include job creation as well as the development of a sustainable creative industry cluster in the region. Speaking about the opportunities in the sector, CEO of Ardmore Studios Siun Ni Raghallaigh highlighted the exponential growth in the demand for content, and the impact technology has had on how content is both created and consumed. Jim Duggan, MD of Screen Scene, emphasised that the key to success in a creative business is to achieve the right balance in the skills of the company directors between technology, creativity and finance. Growth continues at Griffin Hotel Group which operates the Ferrycarrig Hotel, Hotel Kilkenny and Monart Destination Spa. The CEO of the Griffin Hotel Group, which celebrates 56 years in business this year, cites ‘great teamwork’ as the key factor for the group’s continued success. The Griffin Hotel Group’s 2015 accounts show further
growth in 2015 over 2014 with turnover at the group in 2015 growing to €20.7 million – a growth of 12.2% on 2014. Group operating profit increased by 27% on 2014 to €2.6m. The group contributed 67% of this turnover, approximately €14 million, back into the local economy through staff wages and direct suppliers within Wexford and Kilkenny. In 2015
the Group had an average of 433 employees for the year increasing this figure to over 450 during peak periods. Third generation member of the family business, Michael Griffin, is the CEO and manages the business daily along with his brother and fellow director Liam Anthony Griffin. Liam Griffin is the Chairman of the board of Griffin Hotel Group.
Council, Mr Bryan Doyle said, “It is clear that the vision for an internationally recognised audio visual industry cluster has real potential. Whether you are on the creative or production side or whether you are supplying the increasingly specialised needs of the sector, the audio visual and film sector in this region is one that has huge potential to grow, generating world class enterprises and creating jobs in the region.” The Creative Corridor business development programme commences on 7th December 2016 with a Regional Boot Camp in Kilkenny, focused on Goal Setting. This will be followed by a series of training workshops and accountability boards Commenting on the 2015 company accounts Michael Griffin said, “It is without doubt that a hotel is a village, one which requires great teamwork and a focus on the customer experience in order to succeed. The Griffin Group has been fortunate to have succeeded in its corporate goals and strategy; which is a testament to the hard work and commitment of all our team.” The group has also recently agreed a five-year funding agreement with AIB who will serve as its long-term funding partner. According to Michael the deal will enable the business to achieve its future growth ambitions as one of Ireland’s leading premier leisure hospitality groups. EY assisted the company in raising the new funding to buy out the hotel group’s existing lenders. Michael Griffin says, “AIB have a long and established record of supporting Irish businesses and a reputation for developing partnerships with the hotel and leisure sector and we look forward to working with them over the next five years.” n

Busy at BOI Enniscorthy Bank of Ireland (BOI) held a very successful Customer Mortgage Event in their Enniscorthy branch on the evening of 3rd November. Speakers included local BOI branch manager, Helena Kirwan, who spoke about BOI’s new mortgage offering; local auctioneer and valuer Paula Treacy who spoke about steps to look at when buying your first home, and architect Tomas O’Leary, MosArt Architects, who provided an overview of passive
homes that offer next-to-zero heating bills. Light refreshments were served to the large gathering. Helena was delighted with the turnout and hoped “everyone got something from the evening”. At the time of going to press (Weds 30th November) the ever industrious team at BOI Enniscorthy is involved in a major schools-based project in Monageer national school. Latest tourism statistics show Wexford achieving twice the national average in growth of tourism numbers and revenue with a 27% growth figure in tourism numbers and a 20% growth in revenue earned from tourism since 2013. The latest data released relates to 2015 and in that year some 221,000 overseas tourists visited Wexford leaving an economic impact of €65 million – this is in addition to some 679,000 domestic tourists visiting Wexford with an economic impact of €140 million for the county. Wexford is currently ranked as the fifth most popular county in Ireland within the domestic visitor market and twelfth for the international visitor market. Dublin, Cork, Galway and Kerry roll in ahead of Wexford in the popularity stakes for the
TOURISM NEWS… domestic tourism sector and Wexford has very much climbed the ranks to fifth position over the last three years in particular. Within the international market the visitor numbers to Wexford have declined by 8,000 however revenue from the sector has increased by €5 million for the county. Putting the figures into context the entire Southeast region (Carlow, Tipp South, Waterford, Kilkenny and Wexford) attracted 2,194,000 visitors in 2015, Wexford accounts for 41% of the total number of visitors to the region. The total revenue earned by the Southeast region in 2015 from overseas and domestic visitors is €506 million, Wexford earned 40% of this revenue at
€205 million. Investment in the Wexford tourism sector is paying dividends for the county and commenting on the latest statistics Chief Executive of Wexford County Council Tom Enright said, “It is fantastic to see Wexford’s tourism industry really thriving… Future strategic plans by ourselves and other key stakeholders will see further investment in tourism infrastructure as a generator of growth, with significant capital investment committed to the development of Johnstown Castle and the Norman Way. Development plans are also in place for a number of Wexford Greenways along with important public realm enhancements
for Enniscorthy and Wexford towns; building a strong visitor friendly atmosphere. Growth from the domestic market is important, but growth from the international visitor market will also be very much a focus and we are working closely with Failte Ireland and the tourism sector under the Ireland’s Ancient East banner to grow numbers and revenue from this sector.” Visit Wexford Tourism, which is funded by private sector tourism interests along with Wexford County Council, has over the last four years rolled out a dedicated marketing and PR campaign for the county including national TV, radio, print and digital advertising along with just this year teaming up with Tourism Ireland to further promote Wexford in the overseas markets. n

VET DIARY FOR DEC with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic
Joe kavanagh brings us up to date with staff changes in the practice. It’s the time of year that the trees shed the last of their leaves. The colour this last few weeks has been a wonder to behold. Being in a mixed practice means you've the best of both worlds… being out and about in the country and also working with the smaller animals at the clinic. Each brings its own challenges but its own magic and rewards too. Our 'small aminal vet' for the last few years has been Natasha O’Malley Moore. She's been with us for two and a half years and is now on the move again. Like the changes in nature, the trees shed their leaves and look stark and bare. We all tend to resist change and often change is inevitable. Natasha is a hard-working, conscientious and caring vet, a skilled surgeon and clinician. She has been a big asset to our practice and as she sets sail to further fields we wish her every success in her life and work. With Natasha leaving we have another vet arriving – Marcel Hanley. She's a native of Cork and is just back from working in a practice in Canada… so I'm sure she'll bring her own bit of magic to the practice and show us how it’s done on the other side of the pond. She's a graduate from Dublin and we welcome her and look forward to working alongside her.
If you own a dog or dogs you are required under the Control of Dogs Act, 1986-2010 to do the following: Keep your dog under control at all times, this means the dog cannot leave your property unaccompanied and you must make sure it is securely kept in at night.
Ensure that all dogs under your control wear a collar bearing an identity tag with the name, address and contact details of the owner at all times. Some breeds such as Alsatians, Rottweilers, Japanese Akitas etc. must be securely on a lead and muzzled in public.
Each dog you own must have a licence or a general licence to cover all dogs in your possession.
Owners of dogs that have worried sheep will be obliged to pay compensation once they are traced.
Dog owners should also remember that farmers are legally permitted to shoot dogs straying onto their land.

Before you wreck your brain trying to figure it out I will tell you – Old Age Pensions. In the 1920’s Ernest Blythe reduced the old age pension by a shilling from 10 shillings a week to 9 shillings a week. He was reviled for the rest of his long life and is still spoken of in derogatory terms because of it. A 10% reduction in the old age pension was a scandal which deserves to be remembered for ever more. From the 1920’s no government ever dared reduce the old age pension until the arrival of the
Labour Party’s Joan Burton who was appointed Minister for Social Protection in 2011. The title of her office and the political party she represents would indicate that above all other things she would have ensured that our old age pensioners were protected. However, in 2012 the bould Joan decided to introduce a change in the criteria for qualification for the contributory old age pension. Joan with the support of her Labour Party and Fine Gael colleagues made changes to the Social Welfare Bill, the net effect being that people who worked all their lives and expected to qualify for a miserable pension of 233 euro per week find themselves being awarded up to
50 euro per week less. Yes folks that’s right. A reduction of up to 50 euro per week on the pension amount. This is worse than anything Ernest Blythe did and deserves to be regarded as such. The same Joan and her colleagues didn’t do anything to reduce their own massive pensions. That wouldn’t be constitutional we are told. This sneaky change didn’t begin to have an effect until 2013 when people in all innocence applied for their due pension. They were told that our Joan had doubled the qualifying criteria overnight and tough luck your pension will not be 233 euro but more like 190 euro. This is a scandal of mammoth proportions and should be treated as such. This is where Michael Sheehan comes into the picture. For those who don’t know who he is, Michael is a county councillor from the New Ross area. During the last year his clinics have been inundated with people who have been adversely affected by this vicious cut. People have literally cried in front of him when explaining their now totally impoverished circumstances brought about because of this unexpected reduction in their pension. How do I know this? I know because I accompanied a pensioner to see Sheehan on this issue and must say that I
am very impressed with his understanding of the situation and his humanity when dealing with my pensioner friend. He has succeeded in having the matter raised in the Dáil, no small feat for a guy who isn’t a member of it. The responses he is so far getting from Leo Varadkar, the present Minister for Social Protection, are not very encouraging for those affected. I have no doubt that Michael Sheehan will continue this fight on behalf of the old age pensioners of this county and beyond. It is important that those who are affected and haven’t already done so contact him immediately. There is massive strength in numbers and realistically he will only achieve a result if enough people from all over the county contact him. Currently he is the only public representative in this county following this issue. His details are on the web. This column doesn’t normally devote so much space to a single issue but I make no apologies in this regard. If we cannot treat our pensioners with respect and dignity we are nothing and those public representatives who will not support Michael Sheehan in this fight come into that category. Furthermore, I will return to this matter on a regular basis until the pensions are restored for our elderly.

rail serviCes There is a real threat to our rail services from Gorey to Rosslare. Apparently, the line is not economically viable. This argument doesn’t hold water. In most countries in the world public transport is treated as an essential public service which is subsidised by the taxpayer. The idea is that the state has an obligation to provide a means to get around for those without an alternative mode of transport. Furthermore, a public transport system should take private vehicles off the road, reduce carbon footprint and free up some of our traffic-choked cities and towns. People may say that the taxpayer is subsidising enough. Well yes that’s true but there are many other taxpayer subsidies such as higher echelon public service payoffs etc. which could be looked at. But then maybe that would be unconstitutional.
Christmas shopping It’s that time of year again when the mind shifts to what to buy herself or himself for Christmas. There are many options nowadays such as travel to Dublin, Waterford or now, with the reduction in sterling, to go up north. The online gig is also a sort of in-thing at the moment. One thing we must remember, however, is that money spent outside of our own area does nothing to help the local economy which actually employs thousands of people. There is also the question of value and reliability. If you purchase goods locally and for whatever reason need to change them there will never be a problem provided that you have a receipt and the item is undamaged. Therefore it is in all our interests to spend whatever few bob we have locally rather than elsewhere. and Finally… A Happy Christmas to all our readers and hopefully we will be back to bore, entertain, amuse, anger or satisfy you in 2017. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? Wexford County Council has recently been awarded the South East Regional Award in respect of its Health and Safety Management System. COUNTYWIDE FUNDING… minister paul Kehoe has welcomed the announcement that local primary schools are to receive the minor Works grant for the 2016/2017 school year. this grant is worth €5,500 per school plus €18.50 per mainstream pupil and €74 per special needs pupil to 105 schools in Wexford. this means €6,425 for a 50 pupil school and over €11,000 for a 300 pupil school. the schools will receive the funds over the coming weeks. The works that can be undertaken under the Minor Works Grant include improvements to school buildings and grounds, improvement or replacement of mechanical and electrical services, the pur-
chase of standard furniture and physical education equipment, the purchase of floor coverings and window blinds and the purchase of IT related equipment. Welcoming the announcement, Minister Kehoe said “ongoing investment in the education of our children is imperative for the future success of our country. We have seen several major school projects and numerous devolved smaller projects across Wexford over the last number of years and we must continue this investment to meet the needs of the children of Wexford .” in further good news, minister paul Kehoe has welcomed the announcement of
€55,000 for three Wexford groups under the national lottery fund operated by the department of health. The awards announced include €25,000 for Bunclody Day Care for the installation of a lift, €20,000 to FDYS (Ferns Diocesan Youth Service) providing enhanced facilities for young people and €10,000 for Acquired Brain Injury Ireland, Wexford, to fund a purpose vehicle. The Department of Health has operated the National Lottery Discretionary fund over the last several years. The fund provides once-off grants to organisations providing a range of health related services. n

the skoda yeti has become something of an irish favourite since it first arrived here in 2009. the yeti is skoda’s closest thing to a crossover, that oh-so-fashionable buzzword to describe anything that sits higher than a hatchback and looks more like an off-roader. The crossover market has exploded in recent years but the Skoda Yeti has a rugged charm all of its own that hasn’t really been replicated. The Skoda Yeti is more van-like in profile than more SUVinspired rivals, but it’s a purposeful design that reaps benefits in terms of interior space. The high, squared off roof gives excellent headroom to everyone on board and rear legroom is very generous too. It’s certainly one of the roomier feeling cars in its class and the 416 litre boot is very versatile. The interior design is ageing well and the material

quality is generally good around the cabin for this class of vehicle at this price range. There are five trims offered in Ireland and standard equipment includes roof rails, alloy wheels, front fog lamps and air con. The ‘Monte Carlo’ trim car I was driving is the style
icon of the range with its contrasting black roof and door mirrors and other sporty features like 17” black alloy wheels, a front spoiler and rear diffuser. Inside grey seats with a red stripe inject some colour and fun to the interior, and standard equipment is high including cruise con-
trol, dual zone climate control, parking sensors, touchscreen infotainment, a panoramic glass roof and a flat bottomed sports steering wheel. The engine line up for the Skoda Yeti is made up of a 1.2litre TSI turbo petrol engine with 110hp and a 2.0-litre TDI with 110hp or 150hp. The 2.0-

My test car had the 2.0TDI with 150bhp and it’s got loads of grunt for the Yeti. Running costs do start to creep up a little however with motor tax costing €270 per year for this model, though it still returns up to 59mpg. The 2.0TDI is a bit noisy on start up when cold and during hard acceleration, but generally it’s a good companion for the Yeti. The Yeti’s on road driving manners are surprisingly good. In short, it might look like a van but it does not drive like one! The steering is weighted nicely and it grips well over twisty rural roads
with not too much body roll. The suspension takes the edge off bumps and ruts in the road surface and the only negative thing is that the Yeti does get noisier at motorway speeds. The Skoda Yeti is definitely worth checking out as an alternative to a hatchback for the higher driving position and spacious, airy cabin. Caroline gets motoring winter driving tips as the colder and darker weather descends, easytrip has sent us seven tips to stay safe on the roads this winter. 1. vehicle check: before the onset of wintry weather, check your lights, your oil and anti-freeze levels, your wiper blade condition, water levels, and your tyres for any bulges or small cuts – don’t forget to check the spare tyre.
2. Be safe, be seen: use dipped lights even before darkness has fallen when following other vehicles and in built-up areas. 3. Watch out for motorcyclists and cyclists: leave space for cyclists and be prepared for the fact that cyclists may not have sufficient lighting or have high visibility clothing on.
4. overtaking: it is more difficult to judge a safe gap in the dark so don’t overtake unless you are absolutely certain it is safe to do so – particularly on motorways. 5. Be aware of pedestrians: particularly in poorly lit areas and pay particular attention to children who may be walking to and from school.
6. driving in fog or heavy rain: switch on your fog lights and drive slowly when visibility is poor. Turn on your hazard lights if necessary to alert drivers following behind. 7. Keep your distance: always remember to keep the recommended distance between you and the car in front – two seconds in dry conditions and four seconds in wet. n
Carzone Motoring report…
the key findings of the latest Carzone motoring report (november 2016) are: Almost half intend to buy a car in the next year. 28% will spend between €10,000 - €20,000 on their next car. 1 in 4 will use savings to buy a car but finance options are on the rise. The cost of car insurance
is the top financial concern for car buyers. Over half spend up to €250 per month on running their car. Of those planning to sell their car next year, over 1 in 5 will do so online. Men are more confident about selling their car online than women (49% vs. 29%).
91% say Brexit has not had an impact on their decision to buy a car in 2017. The Volkswagen Golf remains the most searched for car on Carzone. The outlook for the motor industry is positive according to the latest Motoring Report from car buying experts Carzone. The bi-annual index
which examines trends in the Irish motoring market, finds that almost half of Irish people (45%) plan to buy a car in the next year. The Carzone Motoring Report is compiled by analysing data from the 108 million searches carried out on Carzone in the first 10 months of the year, as well as an in depth survey of 1,610 Irish motorists nationwide.n

“Any attempt to downgrade rail service will be fiercely resisted” Fianna Fáil td for Wexford James Browne has warned the government that any attempt to downgrade rail services in the county will be fiercely resisted. Deputy Browne made the comments following the publication of a report which suggests that rail services south of Gorey could be withdrawn as early as 2018. “The Government is currently considering the future of the rail network in Ireland and it seems they have ear-
marked Wexford as a county where they can cut services. Fine Gael should be warned that any attempt to withdraw rail services will be fiercely resisted by the people of We x f o r d , ” s a i d D e p u t y Browne. “The recent publication of the rail review report suggests closing the rail line south of Gorey. This would leave the people of Enniscorthy, Wexford and Rosslare Strand without a rail service. It would also mean that trains would no
longer serve Rosslare Europort which would put what is a vital piece of state infrastructure at risk of closure. “It is deeply disappointing that the Government is considering closing rail services at a time when the need for public transport couldn’t be greater. The Government clearly lacks a coherent strategy for developing the rail network. We need a different vision for growing rail services, one which focuses on making rail travel more attractive and reli-
able so that passenger numbers can be increased. “Minister Ross should be focusing on increasing the profitability of Irish Rail through passenger growth instead of closing rail lines. It makes no sense to close the rail line in Wexford considering the move towards promoting greater use of public transport. “I have serious concerns about the future of Rosslare Europort should this proposal come to pass. It is already a vital
piece of state infrastructure, and its importance will increase once Brexit formally begins. Many manufacturers are considering using Rosslare as an access point for shipping goods to Europe post-Brexit. “It makes absolutely no sense for Irish Rail to close the rail link to Rosslare considering the fact that the port uses this rail link to ship freight, and the demand for this service is likely to increase in the years ahead,” concluded Deputy Browne. n

the first ever County Wexford garda youth awards were launched on 14th november 2016. the Wexford garda awards, which are being held in association with Wexford County Council, are aimed at young people throughout County Wexford between the ages of 11 and 21 who will be recognised for their positive work and contributions. Many of these young people have made and continue to make amazing contributions to their local community. Some may have excelled in sports, while others may have overcome adversity, be it serious illness or personal difficulty. Other young people may have given their own time to help others or makes their community or school a better place. The Wexford Garda Youth Awards is an opportunity for you to help get these wonder-
ful young people the recognition that they fully deserve. All you have to do is complete a simple nomination form. taking to the stage on 25th november a major fundraising concert was held in Wexford opera house featuring the Band of the defence Forces. the proceeds of this concert will be donated t o We x f o r d h o s p i c e homecare and the defence Forces Benevolent Fund. Wexford Opera House’s roof and foundations shook with the music and noise of brass instruments, drums and the beatiful voice of Deirdre Masterson soprano – the Gorey native was on stage accompanied by the combined bands of the defence forces. This was to raise funds for the two charities involed and was a great night. The army band was conducted by Mark Armstrong who kept the band in tune througout the night with songs like Kelly the Boy from Killanne. Deirdre sang an array of light opera songs but the last two songs of the night were the best – my favourite song You’ll Never Walk Alone and Danny Boy. This was a special homecoming night for Deirdre.

Another special homecoming night was in Enniscorthy Golf Club on Saturday 26th November when internationally renowned tenor, and Kiltealy native, Anthony Kearns performed an intimate concert in Enniscorthy Golf Club. We’ll be doing a review of this in our January issue. Enniscorthy Eye will also be doing a review of the year. In the meantime we wish everybody a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year. a 16-year-old enniscorthy girl has being picked to represent ireland in two modelling competitions in 2017 in london and paris. Colaiste Bride student Sara Kate Roche from Bridgemeadows in Enniscorthy will represent Ireland in the Face of the Globe next year. The first contest will be in The Hilton in London on 17th and 18th March – that’s in the top model beauty category worldwide, the second is in Disneyland, Paris, at the end of March for which she has to raise funds for children’s cancer so any sponsorship would be gratefully accepted, said her mother Geraldine.

Golf boost for South East
Dublin Marathon Presentation Night in Donohoe's Bar. The John Corrigan Trophy was presented by Deirdre Corrigan to Conail Cooper for the first clubman home in a time of 2.41.29. Flying the flag for Enniscorthy Enniscorthy Dragons Kickboxing Academy recently sent three students and their coach to compete on the w o r l d s t a g e a t t h e Wo r l d Championships in Portugal. It was a huge honour for coach, Mark Enstone, and his students to represent their country. An enormous amount of hard work and dedication was required to achieve this feat but it paid off handsomely: Robyn Butler aged 12 won a Gold medal, Liam Murply aged 21 also won Gold, Joseph Howlin aged 25 took Bronze and Coach Mark Enstone won Gold. Mark would like to thank all involved including their sponsors and believes all should be proud of this local club’s remarkable achievements. n

World Shore Angling Championships some of Wexford’s best beaches together with Waterford’s Woodstown Beach were the centre of attention for two weeks in november when the world’s top sea anglers – 30 teams representing 18 countries – came to ireland to take part in the Fips 33rd World shore angling Championships organised by the irish Federation of sea anglers, with logistical and financial support from Wexford County Council, inland Fisheries ireland, and event ireland.

The event brought some 4,000 bed-nights to Wexford during the off-peak tourist season and was a welcome opportunity to showcase the South East in particular as a world class angling destination. It was joy all round for the Irish Mens and Ladies teams when both teams put through a near perfect performance on the final day of the 4-day competition to win Gold at the World Shore Angling Championships. n

Apply now for sports club funding sports clubs and organisations should prepare now for sports capital grants as the sports Capital programme is to commence in the near future. Fine Gael Wexford TD, Minister Paul Kehoe, is calling on sports clubs and organisations to prepare for the necessary paperwork in advance as the Minister of State for Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, has “confirmed that the application process for the Sports Capital Programme for 2017 will be open by January at the latest”. “Clubs and organisations will be given a number of weeks to complete the application process, but they should start preparing for their application now. “The Minister confirmed that he will be announcing more comprehensive details of the new round shortly, including all of the relevant deadline dates. However it is very beneficial for sports clubs and organisations to get this advance notice of the application process, as many of them hold their AGMs around this time of year and they want to put their plans in place for 2017. For an application to be successful they must have matching funds
and so it takes some preparation. “The Sports Capital Programme was re-instated by the last Fine Gael government in 2012, after they’d been cut by Fianna Fáil in the wake of the economic crash. I was delighted to hear it confirmed in Budget 2017 that the grants would resume again next year. “Many diverse types of clubs and organisations in Wexford benefitted from grants under the programme including Gusserane O’Rahilly GAA Club, Kilmore Quay Community Development Association, Adamstown Athletics Club, Campile United AFC. “The Sports Capital Programme represents an
excellent value for money investment. It is crucial we invest in sport and the health of our population, particularly with obesity on the rise. Investing in sport is good for the health of the nation, both literally and economically. “Fine Gael in Government is using our economic progress to invest in communities around the country and ensure that everyone can benefit. Sport is just one important element of this. So far this year, over €22.8 million has been paid out through the excellent Sports Capital Programme to 680 organisations across the country in order to support the development of sports facilities and the purchase of sports equipment.” n
Enniscorthy Sports Hub At the November meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District plans for the next construction stage at the Hub were discussed. This stage involves the construction of a building to house changing rooms showers/toilets and an artist’s impression of the building was circulated to members. The cost will be in the region of €350,000. The exact positioning of the building on the site was discussed before it was agreed that officials and councillors would meet on the site to look at the options. The construction of a viewing stand will be a separate matter at a later stage and will depend on a substantial element of state grant to fund it.

on 16th november i had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Bord gais energy irish Book awards at the double tree hilton, dublin, and experience all the glitz, glamour and razzmatazz of the red Carpet. Joining RTE cameramen and Press from all the national newspapers I was blown away by the buzz, the style, the excitement and the talent. Surrounded by sports celebrities like Paul O’Connell, Donal Lenihan, Jason McAteer and John Kavanagh and models and fashionistas like Roz
Purcell and Pippa O’Connor and the cream of Ireland’s Literati Donal Ryan, Cecelia Ahern, Marian Keyes, Liz Nugent, Paul Howard, Sinead Gleeson, Tana French and many, many more, not to mention the elusive Graham Norton, it was an enchanting evening beautifully choreographed and expertly managed by Unique Media and the lovely Lisa Buckley. The red carpet fashion was stunning with the diminutive Cecelia Ahern captivating in a retro pink sequined number accompanied by her elegant mother Miriam. Midnight blue
retired school teacher mary Cotter was surrounded by family, former colleagues and friends at the presentation Centre on Friday evening 11th november as she introduced her book of short stories an eye on Myself to all present. It was launched by her husband Richie, another retired teacher, and now well known community activist and volunteer who was lavish in his praise of Mary and her heartwarming stories of Tipperary
where she grew up and bygone days and people she knew. Richie said how very proud he was of his wife and what she had achieved and he welcomed members of the Cotter and Cunningham families from both Tipperary and Kilkenny, f o r m e r c o l l e a g u e s f ro m Greystones and new friends from both Enniscorthy and Ferns, and paid tribute to both for making himself and Mary feel so at home here in Wexford. appears to be the new black as many of the shortlisted sported classy versions of both, including Vanessa O`Loughlin (aka Sam Blake), Hazel Gaynor, Alex Barclay and E.R. Murray who was wearing the most delicious Dorothy Over the Rainbow shoes and said when I admired them that they were to direct the eye away from the rest of her! Kathleen Watkins looked regal at eighty-two in deep burgundy standing to one side whilst hubby Gaybo and Ryan Tubridy had a right old bant with Jason Byrne in front of the
cameras just about remembering in time to ask Kathleen, the author, to join them. But Jilly Cooper at eightyeight stole the show. She looked simply elegant, sporting an extraordinary figure for an octogenarian and has managed to retain her girlish demeanour and can you believe a girlie naughtiness. Jilly, who has written over forty best-selling books, was the recipient of the Bord Gais International Recognition Award - a special award made to international authors who have contributed to the health and wealth of the Irish book trade.

But my focus and reason for attending was of course our Wexford gal and Chairperson of the Wexford Literary Festival, Carmel Harrington, shortlisted for her fourth novel The Things I Should Have Told You. Carmel in flowing ballgown with intricate lattice top exquisitely complimented by an eye-catching piece of Blaithin Ennis jewellery looked born to the red carpet and along with husband Roger cut quite a dash. It was an amazing achievement for Carmel to be nominated and all of Wexford should be proud of her. She is a terrific ambassador for the county and for the Wexford Literary Festival. Now in its 11th year, the star-studded ceremony presented by RTE’s Keelin Shanley continued in the packed function room, and as winners were announced they were guided into the Green Room where they were interviewed by Evelyn O’Rourke in front of Press and members of book

orna ross, now living in london but raised in Wexford recently won the Best novel award in the Carousel aware prizes with her novel her secret rose, a literary-historical novel about the love affair between WB yeats and maud gonne. Ross, born Aine McCarthy, was raised in Murrintown, Co. Wexford. She attended Murrintown National School and the Loreto Convent Wexford. She completed two degrees at University College Dublin, including a BA in English Literature and a Masters in Women’s Studies. She also worked for some years as a lecturer in culture and creativity studies at UCD, teaching a groundbreaking C re a t i v e & I ma g i n a t i v e Practice course that forms the basis of her Go Creative! book series. Carlow author, Lorna Sixsmith, won the Best Nonfiction Book award in the Carousel Aware Prize for independently published books with her second book How To Be A Perfect Farm Wife (published Sept 2015). Her third book An Ideal Farm Husband was recently launched in the Book Centre in Wexford. The CAP awards aim to showcase the cream of Irish self-published authors, bringing them to the attention of

Sunday, 6 November 2016, the curtain fell on the 65th Wexford Festival Opera as more than 850 people including audience, cast, crew and volunteers all joined hands and sang ‘Auld Lang Syne’ in harmony bringing the world-renowned international festival to a theatrical close. Over the 12 days more than 23,000 tickets were issued for 54 separate events which ranged from evening performances, to ShortWorks daytime operas, to the ever-popular gala night. This year’s Festival saw a continued increase in ticket sales with many events sold-out months in advance for the second consecutive year. Other highlights of the year include: Three critically-acclaimed main evening opera productions;
Four nominations from the International Opera Awards, including ‘Best Festival’; Four live broadcasts of the operas via RTÉ lyric fm and BBC Radio 3 reaching millions of listeners worldwide; The CD and download release of the 2015 production of Guglielmo Ratcliff by Mascagni on the RTÉ lyric label. Addressing the audience on the final night, Artistic Director David Agler announced the repertoire for the 66th Wexford Festival Opera, which will run for 18 days from Thursday 19th October until Sunday 5th November 2017: Medea by Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842), Margherita by Jacopo Foroni (1825-1858), Risurrezione by Franco Alfano (1875-1954).

Zane’s first inclination was to depict death and war and she began by drawing men in uniform but soon became bored with the concept and turned her attention to women who are the real tragic victims of war. What she has created are twenty hauntingly beautiful pieces depicting women, death, religion and sex. Brian Hand told the enthralled audience at the Opening in November that the model used by Zane for this collection were provocative French postcards circa 1914 that were found in the pockets of many of the soldiers in WW1, one is actually of Marlene Deitrich at the K Club. Zane, originally from Latvia, looking elegant in black was surrounded by family and well wishers with many purchasing the lovely prints very reasonably priced and mounted by Enniscorthy Community Workshop. There is no doubt that this lovely woman has an amazing talent, her work is distinctive, thought provoking and hypnotic and as Brian Hand concluded, ‘In a few years time we will all be proud to say that we were at the opening of this unique exhibition.’ The exhibition runs until 23rd December and if you get a chance do call in to view it and perhaps even purchase a piece or a print which would make a novel present for someone this Christmas.
