T H A N K Y O U FO R HELPING THOSE A T T H E G R A S S R O OT S If you are holding this Annual Report, it’s alm ost certainly because you are a change maker in a world that desperately needs ch ange. We can't thank yo u enough for the role you play in that world and in our lives. Most importantly, we can’t express sufficien t thanks on behalf of those wh om you empower at th e grassroots. Life at the grassroots has been a major focus for us this year and is therefore a major emphasis in th is repor t. Three particular deve lopments, over this tim e, stand out. Serving those who wa nt to connect, but don't know how Often we find people want to give goods to assist those at the grassroots, but don’t know how to co nnect. We have seen a couple of significant developme nts here in Hong Kong and intern ationally.

Along with these hig hlights, we have, of co urse, continued suppor ting those at the grassroot s through our ongoing services: shipping, selling fair tra de items and simulating their ne eds through our expe rie ntial programmes. None of this could ha ppen without you, wh ether you give funds, pro bono services, product, volun teer time or in a host of other wa ys. Our deepest thanks alw ays, in all ways, for sta nding with us and, most im portantly, those we se rve at the grassroots. Malcolm and Sally Be gbie Crossroads' Founders and Directors

• Around Hong Kong This year saw moment um gathered around GoodCity, an innovative app be ing built by our IT tea m, and currently funded by th e HK Jockey Club Chari ties Trust. GoodCity will all ow rapid movement of goods around Hong Kong in unprecedented ways. Watch this space! • Around the world This year also saw over 61% growth in Global Hand, our online service that allows people with go od s outside Hong Kong to offer them. We then se ek to match them with NG Os in Europe, Asia, Af rica or more. Serving those on ou r doorstep Here in Hong Kong, wh ere we are headquart ered, there are those at the grassroots who come routinely to us for help. To supp or t them better, we pu t huge effor t into renov ating a Distribution Ce nt re this year: one, we hope, ca ters for their needs in a deeper, fuller way.

About Crossroads

WHAT IS CROSSROADS FOUNDATION? Our goal is to be a crossroads in a broken world, connecting people in need with those who can help. We do so through our four services.

The old proverb says: I cannot understand a man until I have walked a mile in his shoes. When people participate in Global X-periences, they do not watch a video or listen to a presentation about global issues. They take a few steps ‘in the shoes’ of people in need. If they are interested in poverty, for example, they experience simulated manual labour and corrupt market practice together with the battle for shelter, food, education and medical care. We offer experiential programmes on war, HIV/AIDS, blindness, hunger, water access, inequality in trade and the complex global range of issues that hold billions in poverty. Many people find experiential learning far more powerful than the spoken or written word. Over 190,000 participants have undertaken experiential programmes, with interest in them growing. Participants include students, business teams, community groups, families and individual visitors.

For many in poverty, humanitarian aid is not enough. They need a job with a reliable income. So we provide ‘business solutions’ for people in poverty: fair trade and social enterprises. Our Global Handicrafts shop, at the Crossroads Village site, is an enchanting, multicultural marketplace of items from Hong Kong and around the world. They are purchased on a fair trade basis that sees a fair income go to artisans and producers who are living in economic need. www.globalhandicrafts.org The Silk Road Café sells fair trade teas and coffees from around the world. It also serves snacks from local Hong Kong social enterprise businesses. All sales help provide income for people in need. It’s an oasis of refreshment and community, themed with the colours, patterns and textiles of the Silk Road. www.globalhandicrafts.org/cafe

The sale of fair trade pro ducts helps generate income for people in nee d within Hong Kong and around the world.

As well as our physical warehouse, Crossroads has a virtual one: www.globalhand.org. Anywhere in the world, real time, people with quality goods or services to donate can offer them through our Global Hand service. We will then pass on the offer to our network of NGOs in Europe, Africa, SE Asia, Central Asia and the Americas seeking the right ‘match’.

Crossroads’ Global Distribution provides aid for relief and development in over 90 countries, as well as in Hong Kong, our headquarters. Welfare: In Hong Kong, we actively support the Social Welfare Department and a wide range of NGOs in providing help to individuals and families living in vulnerable circumstances. Development: Our humanitarian aid is targeted towards entrenched poverty. We redistribute quality goods donated by the Hong Kong community to NGOs, in over 95 countries, who have applied to us with details of their needs and development plans. Follow up and feedback provide ways for all of us to track the effectiveness of the distribution and the sustainability of its outcomes. Relief: Crossroads’ Global Distribution also addresses major disasters. We target disaster reduction, prepositioning and response, seeking to comply with Sphere Standards in : Humanitarian in need people o t s d Response to ensure goo 0% tribute g Kong and 5 We dis n o best practice. Placing goods carefully is all important to us. We are strongly committed to doing so wisely and well. Our experienced team works with both sides to ensure that donated goods are placed where they are truly needed and can make a strategic difference in others’ lives. Our network includes seasoned NGOs who specialise in humanitarian logistics. We welcome donations large and small: by the box, the pallet or container load. NGOs are welcome to let us know if your programmes can use donated goods. We would be glad to talk and match up wherever possible! Global Hand has also built an online matching system for the United Nations to interact with the corporate sector. www.business.un.org You are welcome to visit us on www.globalhand.org, wherever you are in the world.

Helping Hong Kong

SERVING HONG KONG WITH DIGNITY This year, as always, we have prepared donated goods, daily, for people in need within Hong Kong. We do this two ways. We work through other bodies, both governmental (the Social Welfare Department) and non-governmental (charities across Hong Kong) to empower them as they serve people at the grassroots. The following four pages show ‘close up shots’ of a few from the hundreds we served this year.

Helping Hong Kong

We love to care for people in need within Hong Kong. Our buildings are not young, though, and, much as we want our clients to feel a sense of dignity, when visiting here, our aged bricks and mortar don’t always convey that message. Our former distribution centre for Hong Kong people was proving too ancient and, as well, too small, for this busy part of our work. So, this year, we took the plunge on a major project to renovate an old, but larger, space specifically for our Hong Kong clients. It took months of work, but, in Spring 2018, our new location was ready. We drew on the beauty of local art for its decoration. We created a space where local clients can more freely browse a selection of goods. We made a large padded play area for their young children. We built changing rooms where all could try on clothes. We installed stylish, matching shelving we were donated for display of goods on offer. Our hope is that this feels like a visit to a pleasant shop, with just one difference: clients don’t need to pay any money!

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION From Hong Kong to the world It’s a great feeling to stand in front of a world map and ask ourselves how we can get goods from high rise Hong Kong to grassroots organisations in far flung communities in another. It’s something we work on every day, in one form or another, and it’s hard to describe the joy of knowing strategic items reached their goal and empowered lives. In our Annual Reports, we struggle to know which examples to pick from the many which fill our lives. Here are a few from this year.

LIBERIA: LITERACY

If kids can't get to the library, bring the library to them! Books and school furniture from our shipment to Liberia have revived an innovative 'street library' for children who don't go to school or are keen for extra learning. "The supply of books reawakened the reading spirit among these kids," wrote our partner. "The kids previously read nearly all the old books in our library repeatedly… The very limited seating capacity of our street library programme prevented more children from coming to the library to take part in a mix of ‘learn and play’ activities. The school furniture enabled us to increase our intake of kids in the programme by 120 per week!"

SOUTH SUDAN: REFUGEES & IDPS

ZIMBABWE: EDUCATION At this Zimbabwean school, it can be hard to find space to learn. The overcrowded facility sees students sit on the floor or squeezed onto benches. When, therefore, we prepared a shipment for their community, late 2017, we included hundreds of items of school furniture, as well as computers, books, school bags and further goods to boost the school’s capacity to give a quality education.

"...I want to stop running. I want to go home. Conflict makes everything difficult," said a staff member from our partner NGO in South Sudan where fighting has displaced millions of people. The staff have had to flee their homes, as have the displaced people they serve, yet they’re battling hard to continue their work in camps and refugee communities. One of the huge ‘costs’ of war is education where whole generations can be ‘lost’ as a result. KAZAKHSTAN: DISABILITY "This is the only English centre programme in our city where people with disabilities can study English," said our partners in Shymkent, Kazakhstan. We shipped furniture and other goods to help equip this centre which gives young people from grassroots families, and those with disabilities, access to English language lessons in an exceptionally supportive, caring environment.

HAITI: FOOD SECURITY Haiti is a country that still rings in our ears after the unforgettable earthquake which wrought massive destruction in 2010. The difficulty is that, in a country that already faced dire poverty, the hit was all the harder. A colleague visiting took the photos of mud cakes above: literally soil and water baked in the sun and eaten when there was nothing else. Through Global Hand, we sent a 20’ container of milk powder into this beleaguered environment to help kids battling malnutrition.

This newborn in Togo (pictured below) has a safe (and colourful!) place to rest his head, after hospital beds from a Crossroads shipment equipped a maternity ward. The shipment was such a boost to our partners in their rural community that it generated local press attention and helped boost their standing with officials. As a result, they’re not only better equipped but also better placed to serve.

UKRAINE: HEALTH Ukraine continues to battle abject poverty and its medical facilities reflect it. Village health clinics struggle through winters in poorly heated rooms with "doctors, medical assistants, nurses and patients cold all day," wrote NGO staff. With average winter temperatures at -8 to -12, these conditions are not only unpleasant but may well impede or complicate patients’ recovery. We were pleased to include enough electric heaters to help 44 rural health centres in the Ukraine as they battle its unremitting winters. That was part of a much bigger consignment of computers, further medical goods and furniture. 25

NEPAL: BUILDING BACK BETTER The village of Jalbire, Nepal, is full of survivors. When the massive earthquake of 2015 hit the country, 90% of Jalbire's homes were destroyed, devastating this community of 1,500 people. Once the dust settled, they wanted to rebuild in a way that would withstand future disasters, but they lacked the knowledge and training to make that happen. Most, moroever, didn’t think it was possible to find materials for homes that wouldn’t crumble in an earthquake. When our team visited the area two years after the earthquake, many people were still living in temporary shelters, with plastic sheeting. We try, in any post disaster scenario, to stay involved well after the event, knowing the impact may last for years, even decades. So while, in the immediate aftermath, we had helped provide disaster kits, blankets, clothing and other urgent needs, we had retained some of our Nepal Fund for later rebuilding projects. One of our partners in Nepal, Institution for Suitable Actions for Posterity (ISAP), told us of plans for masons’ training in Jalbire. That seemed a perfect use of our funds. ISAP used the funding to train 33 young people in earthquake resistant construction. Graduates were given tools and they immediately began rebuilding both their own homes and others’: proof positive that local materials, used correctly, could let them build back better. And, as well as impacting the area, these individuals now have a lifelong skill-set that will help them generate income. So it’s a win-win, as the saying has it, with everybody benefitting. Best of all, if Nature has her way again in the future, she will have a much harder time destroying these newly constructed buildings. 26

MALAWI: WARM HEART OF AFRICA Mr Gande, at 76, could be the face of grassroots poverty in Malawi. He’s a farmer who has always survived day to day by growing his own food. After suffering a back injury, though, it became more and more difficult to live off his land. "He has to crawl to get around," said Thandiwe Moyo, one of our staff, who visited him in his humble home: one where he sleeps on a hard bench, his chickens in the next room. Being disabled in this way means Mr Gande now relies mostly on the kindness of neighbours. Malawi likes to call itself 'The warm heart of Africa', and, certainly, his neighbours, in their provision of food and other care for him, demonstrated that. Even with their support, though, his life remains tough, uncomplaining as he is. His quiet life is one example of those at the grassroots who benefitted from a shipment we sent to Malawi this year. Mr Gande received items which, unremarkable enough in themselves, were life-changing nonetheless. A thick, soft mattress, for example, now protects his injured back and he now has much needed clothing which was beyond his normal financial reach.

Our shipment to Malawi saw items distributed, at the grassroots, to hundreds more individuals like Mr Gande. At an institutional level, moreover, it helped equip a medical clinic and a school, both offering services to the poorest of the poor in the region. mattresses arrived at Before our hospital beds and us it grieved them to this health centre, staff told centre was full, see patients arrive when the r them a sheet spread offe only ld knowing they cou shipment helped on the floor as their ‘bed’. GLOBAL HAND Donating goods, from many parts of the world 190,000 Often, we hear people say, "I want to donate product, but it is not in Hong Kong. It’s located in other countries. Can Crossroads help?" We love this question. We have been able to make matches between donors of such products and NGOs all over the world through what we call our ‘online warehouse’, Global Hand. How does it work? Donors’ information is put online and, immediately, NGOs around the world are ‘pinged’. NGOs can respond if interested and we seek to make a 'match'. The NGOs can then use the goods in their communities of service. 30

REFUGEE CRISIS Impact at the grassroots

In the massive global discussion surrounding refugees, one desperate reality seems rarely mentioned. While much is made of the movement of refugees in places such as Western Europe and the UK, a far higher proportion is being absorbed by fragile states and under-resourced nations. One of the largest camps in the world this year, for example, is housing South Sudanese refugees in Northern Uganda: a region where people, at the grassroots, were already struggling.

Not so long ago, that part of Uganda endured a 20 year civil war which left the area devastated. Education and medical provision are extremely weak. Jobs are few and far between, with some areas citing formal employment as low as 1%. Sheer, unmittigating poverty holds this area in its grip. With what, then, are they to absorb the constant stream of refugees pouring over their border? Malcolm Begbie, Crossroads’ Co-founder and Director, along with Crossroads' Global Village UK Manager, Natalya Kan, visited Northern Uganda, this year, where we had sent 2 x 40’ containers to support refugees in need. These two pages capture something of their trip.

Refugee Crisis

BADGE OF STRENGTH FOR ROHINGYA REFUGEES "To be called a refugee," the saying has it, "is the opposite of an insult; it is a badge of strength." Strength has been needed by the many Rohingya whom this year has seen pour out of their country searching for refuge. In the sprawling camps, NGO Plan has been one of the many assessing and addressing the greatest needs: challenges which have become, tragically, the hallmarks of almost all refugee situations in under-resourced environments. One major concern is limited or poor quality water, together with weak sanitation facilities and poor waste management. We partnered with them to help build clean toilets and to provide hygiene kits in the constant battle against disease taking hold or spreading through the camps.

CHOCOLATE WITHOUT SLAVERY It may be the last thing on our minds when taking a sweet bite of chocolate, but it's the bitter truth: child slavery still plagues the cocoa industry, and the number of slaves is increasing as the world’s consumption of chocolate is increasing. These children are handling dangerous agricultural chemicals, wielding sharp tools, carrying heavy loads, and enduring abuse from their captors. "The beatings were a part of my life," said one former child labourer. "When you didn't hurry, you were beaten."

Fair trade group, Divine Chocolate, demonstrates that a love for chocolate doesn't have to cost innocent lives. They are the only chocolate company worldwide which is 100% fair trade and owned by cocoa producers in a Ghanain cooperative called Kuapa Kokoo. Last year, they generated an astonishing GBP 282,000 which was designated to help build schools, along with other projects that are lifting people out of poverty. Our Global Handicrafts marketplace has been selling Divine products proudly since our very beginnings. In 2017-18, we sold 2,339 bars of chocolate, and served chocolate drinks in our cafe made with Divine cocoa, loving that our customers can indulge with a clear conscience.

COOL SOLUTION FOR POWER CONSERVATION Budget and power usage are always top of our mind around Crossroads Village. It’s not just because as a charity, it’s important to keep our costs low. It's also because we care that the people we serve in poor communities are the ones suffering most from pollution, environmental degradation and climate change. Enter Coolnomix, a group that specialises in energy optimisation solutions. In 2017, Coolnomix provided 25 aircon control units for installation in Crossroads' most heavily used offices, at a generous discount. In the peak months of summer, around 52% of Crossroads' power costs are incurred by air conditioning. This is in part to keep our volunteers comfortable and in part to protect donated product from mould or other humidity challenges. Coolnomix estimates that their units can save 40% on our air conditioning power usage. Matt Gow, Crossroads’ Director of Strategy says, "When we can save on our power budget, it means that funding can be invested into what we do best: helping people in need." Better for our budget; better for the planet; better for those we serve. Now, that’s cool! Coolnom ix helpe d us ins units as tall 25 o we s e e k f their e to conse nergy o rve pow ptimisin er. g

COMPANIES IMPACTING PEOPLE AT THE GRASSROOTS Again, this year, we have seen companies shine in the many ways they find to partner with us and, in doing so, with those we serve at the grassroots, locally and internationally. There are far too many stories for us to tell, but we have grouped a few examples to show the categories of partnership which companies have been providing.

CONNECTING KIDS TO THE GRASSROOTS Jane Goodall, well known anthropologist, said it succinctly: "Kids can change the world". Over the years, including this one, we have seen kids making a difference. Whether large or small, we never want to discourage kids or tell them to wait till they are ‘grown up’ to act. These pages show just a sampling of the actions we see kids taking every day: fundraising, collecting goods, simulations, career choices and more.

It was a challenge. Would they, could they, take it on? Someon e had suggested that the kids of our own staff consider travellin g to Thailand to help a children’s home. The proposal was a trip. But trip s cost money. Could these kids raise it? Their parents, working full time with us here at Crossroads, have no salaries. All are full time volunteers. How, then, could these kids raise the money to cover the costs of their flights, accommodation and foo d? They rose to their challenge, eac h in his or her own way. Some got sponsorship for long distance running. Some turned to art and made stationery. Some did bake sales. The metho ds varied, but the outcome was awesome. They got the money and off they went. The kids ran a weekend camp for 80 orphans. They took school equipment, toy s and other supplies from our warehouse as a gift. They led songs, dances, crafts and sports, all reminding each other that, wherever in the world, what kids need most is friendship, play and lov e. 63

Students Students and their teachers often ask what they can do at Crossroads? What difference can they make? What types of ways can they interact with us? Which age to they need to be for what? Every week of our lives sees students come through our gates. Here’s a tiny sampling of a very busy student year. You’ll see, here, kids doing our simulation x-periences, learning about other cultures and international need, collecting much needed items, fundraising, volunteering and supporting fair trade. You’re welcome to any and all of this!

WHAT CAN MY SCHOOL DO WITH CROSSROADS? "Our world is not okay," says Crossroads’ Director David Begbie. "Almost 3 billion people survive on less than USD2.5 per day. 68.5+ million people are displaced. Tuberculosis and HIV are still wreaking unnecessary havoc across this planet. And environmental damage is spiralling out of control. "In an era where actions should be gigantic, bold and brave, they are too often tepid, inconsequential and small. Yet they need not be! "There is a lie in our world, a pervasive lie, which says to children and young people, ‘No, no you can’t make a difference. You are too small.' Nowhere does the ramification of that lie have greater impact than in our response to world need. If there were ever an era to teach tomorrow's leaders to stand up for things that are right, needed and good, it should be this one. But can we?" Crossroads believes, at the core of our vision, that we can! Each week we work closely with primary, secondary and tertiary institutions across Hong Kong, helping shape their service curriculum, offering talks and simulations for students, welcoming groups of students to volunteer with us and encouraging them to find creative, impactful ways to make a difference that go well beyond bake sales.

FUNDRAISING Thank you for all who helped! "Ga yau!" says the popular Cantonese expression: an encouragement to ‘add oil’ to the tank, to keep moving forward. At Crossroads, we try to run largely on in-kind support, which we receive in grateful abundance. Some things, though, just cost money if we are indeed to move forward. We’re always touched and amazed by the generosity of those who offer to run fundraisers on our behalf, and/or give in particularly strategic and generous ways. That supplies the ‘oil’ which allows us to keep serving those in need! This year saw such help again from great friends and colleagues. If you or your organisation would like to think on ways to give funds, we’d love to connect!

REVENUE Because part of our operational site was returned to the Government in March 2016, the previous two years included a significant focus on reshaping the operational and residential spaces. The 2017/18 year represented a return to a more normal operational year, Crossroads once again, focussing on programme, gratefully empowered by continued generous donor support. Total donations and other revenues for 2017/18 were $15,212,646 as against the total for 2016/17 of $14,686,228, an increase of 3.6%. While the overall income generated was similar to the previous year, and the mix of donor types also consistent, the proportion subject to donor designation changed significantly. The major variation was that donations specifically nominated for particular projects increased from 5.8% of total income during 2016/17 to 14.3% of the total, during 2017/18. This increase, though, is not so great when it is considered that during the previous year, the donors chose to assign their giving specifically to the relocation project, which numbers in that year were excluded from the designated category, and accounted for in

74

a separate relocation summary. In 2017/18 the donations specifically designated for global shipping increased by 19% to $1,097,647. The amount of general undesignated donations increased by 16% over the previous year. One key new element of income bears highlighting. During the year The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust agreed to support development of the GoodCity App. The overall grant approved was HK$8,270,000. Of this sum, HK$689,000 was received during the current period. Further detail is on page 77. Of the 2017/18 revenues $4,814,568 (31.6%) was self-generated through the activities of the Global X-perience and Global Handicraft divisions. A further $2,334,845 (15.3%) was generated by full time volunteers toward the costs of board and lodging. These two sources overall represent 47% of the organisation’s funding, thus significantly reducing dependence on philanthropic giving. Another benefit of the self-generating element is that it contributes to a more predictable revenue flow year on year.

The chart "Classes of Donors" 2017/18 shows the dollar amounts received from the different groupings of donors who support Crossroads. In terms of proportions, approximately one third is received from individuals and another third from corporations. Foundations and other charities contribute 22% of total donations and educational institutions 10%. The chart "Donor Designation of Funds" 2017/18 illustrates the areas of activity toward which the funds were given during the last year. General donations having no specific designation grew in absolute terms to $4,098,807 and, as previously mentioned, this represented an increase of 16% over the previous year. This important component enables Crossroads to direct monies to where most needed and support the overall effort reflected in our underlying cost structures. Work continues, to maintain and even increase this crucial class of funding, while focus is also placed on supporting specified projects.

EXPENDITURE The "Expenditure by Function" chart illustrates our spending expressed in terms of functional departments and Crossroads grants and capital outlays. This shows that just over 50% of resources and expenditures applied to Global Distribution in receiving, processing, storing and donating goods to local Hong Kong recipients and to global beneficiaries. The amount was $7.320,642 over the reporting period. This represented an increase of almost 30% on 2016/17. The reasons include increased investment in goods receipt, warehousing and distribution processes to enable increased future scalability and efficiency, complications in the delivery processes within some destination countries, as well as challenges in obtaining free or low cost shipping. Specific systems have been instigated to ensure that as far as possible, all shipping, clearance and delivery costs are pre-identified and eliminated or covered by the consignee. Global X-perience and Global Handicrafts divisions jointly account for some $3,630,362, in expenditure, being roughly even year on year. The chart shows that only $253,015 in costs had been incurred during the period in relation to the HKJC supported GoodCity project.

THE HONG KONG JOCKEY CLUB CHARITIES TRUST:

GOODCITY PROJECT April 17th 2018 marked the commencement of a three year grant from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for scaling up GoodCity. GoodCity is a set of mobile apps that makes it faster and easier for goods donations to flow from donors to beneficiaries in Hong Kong. A full-time Hong Kong social worker, Nokia Cheung, was brought onto the project team in April to liaise with and grow the community of users among the non-profit community. Nokia commenced by engaging dozens of social workers and establishing a pilot group to test and apply preview features, and provide feedback to the project’s technical team. The grant ensures ongoing software development, including the engagement of a full-time in house programmer and three offshore programmers in India. The grant also makes allowance for promotional efforts around GoodCity in subsequent years. GoodCity has already made it possible for goods donations to be processed in dramatically faster timeframes and facilitates thousands of donated items each month. It has now started filling online orders being made directly by local social workers.
