We love our neighbours! In 2015-2016, many of you were neighbours to us in a particularly needed way. Mid 2015, we found ourselves having to move out of the western side of our site and to consolidate into the eastern side. The Government of the HKSAR needed the land returned for construction of residential buildings. The following months became a blur of meetings with the Government, the private sector, consultants, builders, property owners, volunteers, donors and stakeholders. In other words, many of you. We were astounded at the way you came alongside, bearing the load in ways large and small, and lightening the weight upon our own shoulders. We met the deadline. By March 15th, 2016, with your help, we had relocated the contents of 12 major storage areas, moved 3 processing stations, dismantled 5 simulation x-periences and moved our team out of 45 apartments. (Full story p. 40-45) It did not happen without cost, however. You will therefore notice a difference as you read this Annual Report. During the major upheaval, some of our operations, of course, had to slow or even stop for a period. That meant that, this year, we were not able to impact as many lives as usual.

We were able to reach 490,134, but, as a rule, we impact over 600,000. So we, and they, ‘felt’ the impact. Happily, though, we are working through this period. Some reconstruction will still need to happen next year, but the rest of our operations are returning to normal. We feel a lifelong debt to so many of you for being the best of neighbours. And, over and above all that… As well as supporting us with the move itself, you, as ever, also helped us to keep on doing what we are here for: to be neighbours to people in need, both at home, in Hong Kong, and around the world. We often refer to our world as a Global Village: one which, in the 21st century, is smaller than ever, allowing us all to be neighbours to people as never before. We have taken that as our theme for this Annual Report, featuring, throughout, ways in which so many of you are neighbours in the Global Village. Thank you for being such neighbours, choosing to care for those who need you, whether across the street or across the world. We love being a crossroads where we can do our best to help make that happen.

WHAT IS CROSSROADS FOUNDATION? Our goal is to be a crossroads in a broken world, connecting people in need with those who can help. We do so through four services:

Crossroads’ Global Distribution provides aid for relief and development in over 90 countries, as well as in Hong Kong, our headquarters. Welfare: In Hong Kong, we actively support the Social Welfare Department and a wide range of NGOs in providing help to individuals and families living in vulnerable circumstances. Development: Our humanitarian aid is targeted towards entrenched poverty. We redistribute quality goods donated by the Hong Kong community to NGOs, in over 90 countries, who have applied to us with details of their needs and development plans. Follow up and feedback provide ways for all of us to track the effectiveness of the distribution and the sustainability of its outcomes. Relief: Crossroads’ Global Distribution also addresses major disasters. We target disaster reduction, prepositioning and response, seeking to comply with Sphere Standards in Humanitarian Response to ensure best practice.

For many in poverty, humanitarian aid is not enough. They need a job with a reliable income. So we provide ‘business solutions’ for people in poverty: fair trade and social enterprises. Our Global Handicrafts shop, at the Crossroads Village site, is an enchanting, multicultural marketplace of items from Hong Kong and around the world. They are purchased on a ‘fair trade’ basis that sees a ‘fair’ income go to artisans and producers who are living in economic need. www.globalhandicrafts.org The Silk Road Café sells fair trade teas and coffees from around the world. It also serves snacks from local Hong Kong social enterprise businesses. All sales help provide income for people in need. It’s an oasis of refreshment and community, themed with the colours, patterns and textiles of the Silk Road. www.globalhandicrafts.org/cafe

The sale of fair trade products helps generate income for people in need within Hong Kong and around the world.

In today’s world, many for-profit and non-profit organisations are trying to make a difference. Both are often looking for partners, but may struggle to find them. Global Hand offers a ‘matching’ website service. It helps connect people who want to help with poverty, climate change, education, employment, migration, HIV/AIDS, disaster response/reduction, water issues, shelter, food security, environmental responsibility or the many other global challenges. Whether you are a company or an NGO, Global Hand can help ‘match’ you if you are interested in strategic partnerships, humanitarian aid, gifts-in-kind, capacity building, advocacy, skilled volunteering, philanthropy, project funding, academic support or more. Global Hand has also built an online matching system for the United Nations to facilitate UN partnerships with corporations: www.business.un.org You are welcome to find projects and partners through Global Hand. www.globalhand.org

The old proverb says: I cannot understand a man until I have walked a mile in his shoes. When people participate in Global X-periences, they do not watch a video or listen to a presentation about global issues. They take a few steps ‘in the shoes’ of people in need. If they are interested in poverty, for example, they x-perience simulated manual labour and corrupt market practice together with the battle for shelter, food, education and medical care. We offer x-periential programmes on war, HIV/AIDS, blindness, hunger, water access, inequality in trade and the complex global range of issues that hold billions in poverty. Many people find experiential learning far more powerful than the spoken or written word. Over 100,000 participants have undertaken x-periential programmes, with interest in them growing. Participants include students, business teams, community groups, families and individual visitors.

CROSSROADS' GLOBAL VILLAGE I’m just one person. Can I make a difference in a world of need? At Crossroads, we believe the answer is yes. There is something you can do, whoever and wherever you are. In today’s connected world, it’s easier than ever before to be neighbours to people in need. That’s why we are growing what we call a global village. Crossroads loves to be a place where those in need find those who want to help. If you are wanting to find your place in this global village, we want to talk! Email partnerships@crossroads.org.hk

: S R E E T VOLUN F O T R A THE HE K R O W R OU Crossroads would grind to a halt without our mighty team of volunteers from across the Hong Kong community. 2015-2016 saw a particularly dedicated army of helpers, supporting us through the move (details p 40 to 45). And, throughout the year, we depend on hundreds of volunteers who faithfully give their time and skills to help us help others.

As always, this year, we had volunteers working in many parts of our lives. Warehousing: people to wrap, pack and stack goods, warehouse managers, forklift drivers, inventory managers, truck drivers Marketplace/cafÊ/canteen: buyers, sellers, baristas, cooks, caterers Theatre: actors, producers, dancers, sound systems engineers, set design & producers Communications: public speakers, fundraisers, designers, grant writers, translators Administration: managers, systems analysts, book-keepers, PAs, project managers IT and computers: web designers, IT developers, project managers, hardware/software gurus HR: teachers, teachers’ aids, care-givers Handyman skills: carpenters, plumbers, electricians, engineers, "DIY" personnel, gardening/landscaping What's your place in a world of need? It might just be here at the Crossroads Village. Visit www.crossroads.org.hk/volunteer

KEVIN - intern committed to poverty. Kevin's 2016 summer internship at Crossroads revolutionised his perspective on poverty. Working in our HK Distribution department, he was up close and personal with the faces of the city's most needy for six weeks, and it changed him. "We hear about poverty or discrimination in school, but coming here and working with the local clients, it felt more real. It's no longer a statistic," he said. Kevin took what he learned through his volunteering and our simulation x-periences back to his university community, and has already run his own poverty simulation for fellow students. 17

FAIR TRADE & SOCIAL ENTERPRISE In 2015-2016, our fair trade and social enterprise services continued to thrive. Global Handicrafts, our marketplace begun in 2005, remains a treasure trove of beautiful goods produced by artisans and growers, locally and internationally, with the product range updated this year. All are people facing economic challenges so we ensure each transaction is consistent with our principles, below. Shoppers wander through our ‘markets’ from HK/Asia, Africa, Europe, South America, Central Asia and the Middle East. Alongside, our Silk Road Cafe serves up fair trade beverages and more: an oasis for our volunteers and beloved regulars from the community, who want a coffee break with a conscience. You’re welcome to join us any time! We’re open Tuesday - Saturday, 10 am - 5 pm. By appointment, we can arrange a shopping tour and fair trade talk for your organisation or group.

Mongolia is a pocket of the world easily forgotten. It’s not generally in our consciousness, other than when picturing Genghis Khan, in gorgeous costume, riding across the vast steppes. In the 21st century, though, life on the ground can take pure grit. Adilbek is among the many who struggle for employment. He decided to generate income by producing traditional Mongolian crafts which he held dear and, once trained, sold leather products through Mary and Martha Mongolia (MMM), one of our Global Handicrafts suppliers. Adilbek works hard but, in time, it became clear that new equipment would help his work be more sustainable and scaleable. We were in a place to help. When we sell fair trade, we set aside a portion of the profit for a ‘fair trade premium’ to assist our artisans. The Mary and Martha group used this to purchase a leather stamping machine (pictured left) for quicker and more efficient production. You can buy exquisite Mongolian leather products, like the journal covers and coasters pictured, in our Global Handicrafts shop.

Jenny - Fair trade shopper Jenny has been a Global Handicrafts regular for nearly 5 years, and she loves being able to shop with a conscience. "I love the way fair trade products put a face or story about the producers right in front of us, reminding us that there are real human beings behind every toy, scarf and piece of chocolate. We don't have to change our behaviour dramatically to be ethical. We can still enjoy the excitement that comes with purchasing a gorgeous piece of jewellery, minus the guilt that we have exploited someone far away." 19

Crossroads' Global X-perience simulations are a way to step into the shoes, even briefly, of the kinds of people we serve. Since 2005, we have seen more than 160,000 people take part in these 'x-periences' that grow empathy and ignite action for refugees, the urban poor, people with disabilities and other needs.

W E F : R E F U GE E SIMULATION

It is a unique gathering. No other forum we know brings together leaders of business, governments, royalty, academia and the non-profit sector. That’s why we have attended the World Economic Forum (WEF) for the past eight years, offering simulation experiences to people whose global reach can help even the most disempowered. Of course, whenever high profile figures are in a public setting there is tight security. In 2016, the WEF asked us to bring the refugee simulation into their ‘secure zone’ so it could be attended even by people whose position requires the tightest of security: those often best placed to make a difference to those who need it most.

"I SEE THE LIVES FOR WHICH I LAY DOWN MY LIFE" In August 2015, Hong Kong PolyU hosted the University Scholars Leadership Symposium, a United Nations project aimed at ‘Inspiring individuals, transforming communities’. 873 young people, from 57 nations, met for a week. One participant responded by quoting the above saying from Charles Dickens, demonstrating the depth of impact he and his colleagues experienced. We provided our Refugee Run. Additionally, David Begbie spoke at the symposium itself. (See photo) He told them, "People say to me, ‘I want to change the world but I’m not big enough.’" In response, he loves to say, "Nobody feels big enough to change the world. One of the most powerful trends in recent years is the way in which companies are making their expertise and core competencies available to address global issues. Corporate Social Responsibility has changed the landscape of engagement and we, for one, are very grateful. Corporate partnerships empower us to help those we serve. We’ve featured a few examples on this page. COMPANIES DONATING CORE COMPETENCIES We are indebted to the companies who help us help others by giving their services in a wide range of sectors.  Legal Services: Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Skadden, Hogan Lovells, Cordells  Audit: BDO (formerly Grant Thornton)  Humanitarian Transport: APL, Maersk, Oriental Logistics, Shenship, Swire Shipping, Zim  Information Technology: Microsoft, Cisco, Qlik, Atlassian, ThoughtWorks  Architects: Nelson Chen Architects  Engineering: Arup  Design: Hong Kong Disneyland, M Moser  PR consultancy: Executive Counsel  Food: La Rose Noire, Feeding Hong Kong, Pret a Manger  Product donations: Many kindly donated product including Allen & Overy, Alpha Appliances, AIG, AXA Group, Baker & McKenzie, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Bellanis, BNP, British Council, Carrefour Sourcing Asia, Cathay Pacific, Cisco, Clifford Chance, Dymocks, ESF, Ernst & Young, Global Sources, Grand Hyatt, H & M, Hermes, Hong Kong Disneyland, Hong Kong Rugby Union, Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, HKUST, IKEA, JP Morgan, KPMG, Langham Hospitality Group, Li & Fung Group, Linklaters, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, Marks & Spencer, Microsoft, Nike, Ocean Park, Ralph Lauren Asia Pacific, Sino Group, Starbucks, Swire, Tesco, UBS AG.

WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM SPONSORS Several major companies gave us gracious support in taking ‘A day in the life of a refugee’ to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland: January 2016.

24

The calls began in earnest mid 2015 as a surge of global interest grew in response to the refugee crisis. In Calais, France, an informal camp appeared, known as the ‘Jungle’. It grew rapidly, though without decent facilities or permanent shelter. There were hundreds of unaccompanied minors among the refugees, children in hugely vulnerable situations. Through our Global Hand service, many people across the channel, in the UK, wanted to reach out. Our Global Hand office ran hot, throughout the duration of the Calais Jungle, guiding donors by phone and email to see the needed goods reach those stranded in this heartbreaking location.

Volswagen astonished us by donating two people passenger movers, Caravelles, perfect for moving our team around. Rather than sell these slightly used company cars, Volkswagen chose to donate them to us. An awesome gift!

WHAT DO WE OFFER COMPANIES AT CROSSROADS? Facts, figures, data… The creative IT company, Qlik, ‘automagically’ lets you see your data through different ‘lenses’ , in visual form, or graphs or charts. That ‘view’, in turn, lets us manage our systems better which means we can better serve people in need. Amazingly, Qlik has donated its services to us. Their example is proof positive that companies can help people in need by using their expertise. And all at a ‘Qlik’!

Charles - Corporate donor turns volunteer When Charles retired as General Manager of Columbia in Hong Kong, it was time for a change. During a company volunteering day he had seen substantial donations of clothing given to Crossroads, so it seemed a logical idea to join us as a regular community volunteer. "I strongly believe I’ve received a lot from society. I wanted to do community service, to pay it back, and Crossroads was at the top of my list. The opportunities here suited my abilities and experience", he said. Now, Charles volunteers on our partnerships team helping Hong Kong companies partner with Crossroads with donated gifts and services. His skills and experience are invaluable! 25

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS Transforming the world

"NO PLAN B E R E H T E S U A C BE !" B T E N A L P O IS N Ban Ki-moon put it best. "We don’t have a plan B because there is no planet B." The former chief of the United Nations was talking about mankind’s need to transform the world. Where, though, should the human race begin? We are surrounded by hurting people on a hurting planet. Which priorities should we follow? What goals should we target? The United Nations gathered its 193 countries to discuss this, along with NGOs, companies, academics and other experts. 2015 had marked the completion of the Millennium Development Goals and the world wanted a further set to serve as lodestars, going forward. After 18 months, they came up with 17 global goals for the world to address by 2030. They call them the Sustainable Development Goals: the SDGs. Through Crossroads’ Global Hand service, our IT team continued to partner with the UN through further iterations of a website that brings them all together: www.business.un.org

26

On September 24th, 2015, the day the SDGs were launched, the revised website was launched as well. That marked our tenth year of partnership with the UN on this project. During the current period, we saw a wide range of corporate engagement through this website’s varying services.

CORPORATE COMMITMENTS TO SDGs During the year, 36 major corporate commitments were published toward fulfilling the SDGs. Examples include companies from the following sectors:  Health Care: Novartis made commitment to cut greenhouse gas use to 50% of 2010 levels.  Industrial: Novozymes made commitment to save 100 million tons of CO2 by 2020.  Telecommunications: Schneider Electronics made commitment to reduce operational CO2 emissions and factor CO2 minimising into all new large customer projects.  Energy: ENEL planned to invest Euro 8.8 billion from 2015-2019 into renewable energy. This will make it the largest renewable energy operator in Africa.  Construction: STET made commitment to replace water intensive mineral process with waterless and low emission technologies.  Retail: H&M made commitment to purchase energy from renewable sources, expecting that to be 80% of their current usage.

COMPANY PLEDGES FOR REFUGEE CARE As the world grapples with a refugee challenge of unprecedented size and scope, companies used the website to make pledges in response. During this period 38 significant pledges were published totaling an estimated US$22 million. Following are a few examples.  Deutsche Telecom pledged shelter location, provision of Wifi and pre-paid data cards and internship positions for refugees.  Bayer pledged to establishing apprenticeship opportunities.  Bosch group pledged funding, refugee internships and land for construction of refugee centres.  Sinofi pledged funding for partners supporting refugees.  Man Group pledged funding for partners helping refugee children.  Evonik Industries pledged funding toward vocational training and language proficiency.  Tesco pledged funding for refugees through British Red Cross.  Several universities and post graduate schools offered scholarships to post graduate refugees.

RESTORING STOLEN CHILDHOODS One injustice followed another when the Atanaga family, living in an impoverished Cameroon area, lost their beloved father and breadwinner. And life got worse. Their father’s relatives laid claim to their house and belongings, leaving the grieving family to live in an abandoned house. They knew child labour was the only ‘hope’ left. With schooling beyond reach, the kids abandoned any chance of escaping the cycle of poverty. Their childhoods had been stolen. At this point, relatives shared their plight with our partners on the ground. They leaped into action and organised the needed sponsorship to put all three children into school, covering all their costs. They also provided Mrs Atanaga with the capital to start a small market business. Today, the family supports itself, and the children have a fighting chance at a different future.

Zooming out, big picture, the Atanagas typify thousands in locations such as this where Crossroads works. Hallmarks often include weak medical provision, inaccessible education, inadequate housing and no social safety net. Our goal is to provide shipments that inject deeply into the community to see long term change. In this case, our shipment provided our partners in rural Cameroon with several new facilities. New computer centre: We sent computers that created the first computer centre in the area. It may be hard to believe, in today’s world, but many in the community had never seen a computer before. Now over 300 villagers have regular access to the centre, increasing their skill sets and helping connect them with the rest of the world (photo above). New medical centre: Hospital beds and medical equipment allowed them to open the local area’s first health clinic.

New school building: This was built in time for the shipment’s arrival so that we could outfit it with school furniture, library books and school supplies. In this region, it is estimated only 10% of adults can read so a facility of this kind can be profoundly empowering. New playground: Play is serious business in locations where childhoods are too often robbed. Psychologists advise that children’s overall development is impaired if they cannot ‘be kids’ and balance their growing years with play. Hong Kong’s Canadian International School sent equipment unlike anything the community had seen before! The presence of the playground is the first in the history of the village. Happiness is now part of their daily life. Crossroads' goods distribution philosophy This is the kind of investment Crossroads loves to make. We cannot make a capital investment of funds. We can, however, make a capital investment of goods, strategically chosen for their long term impact. We call it investing for life. It’s one of Crossroads' maxims and our team works harder than we can say to make it happen, locally and internationally.

Right goods, placed the right way, can change the future of those who receive them. Wrong goods placed the wrong way can be ineffective or, sadly, worse. That’s why, at Crossroads, we strive to place product with deep consideration, and even deeper understanding, of the group that will receive them. This doesn’t happen overnight. We begin a process, a lengthy one, which allows us to understand the group’s history, its present need and its future plans. If the placement of goods can make a strategic investment in their operations, helping them move forward, we move forward. Every step of the way, our various departments liaise to ensure we are outfitting the recipients with as close a match as possible: a bespoke ‘fit’ for their particular strategies, climate, culture, expertise and goals. We all know the maxim: "Give a man a fish and he eats today. Teach a man to fish and he eats tomorrow." In our opinion, though, we take it a step further. As well as learning how to fish, that fisherman might, tomorrow, need a boat, a freezer and even a computer to manage his business. That’s where Crossroads steps in to help others step up.

"The container had enough school desks and chairs to fill five classrooms and it saved us so much money, that we just didn’t have," said a Fiji school principal. Behind the postcard-perfect scenery, Fijian youth from poor families face real challenges staying in school. More than 1/3 of people live in poverty.

SUPPORTING HONG KONG HOUSEHOLDS Every day, we assist Hong Kong people who battle to manage life on limited financial resources. They are referred to us by branches of Hong Kong’s Social Welfare Department (SWD) or by Hong Kong NGOs (listed next page). Here is a handful of vignettes: a close-up look at a few of the thousands we help each year. Ms Choi (name has been changed) represents thousands of people in Hong Kong who manage, as a single parent, in a tight living space. Home for Ms Choi is a tiny 6 x 8' room with her toddler, in an apartment she shares with three other single mothers. Life is tough, but Ms Choi has an irrepressible smile, despite her circumstances. Raising a growing, energetic toddler in a one-room home was becoming more and more difficult, so Ms Choi came to us to find more space-efficient storage solutions. She also came for a computer to share with her household of mothers, to assist their daily lives and to help them stay connected to the world. She arrived with toddler in tow and a measuring tape in hand. A couple of hours later, she left with several

sets of shelves, measured exactly to fit her home, along with that much wanted desktop computer to serve her whole household of flat-mates! Two Crossroads' staff travelled back home with Ms Choi to see the goods installed. Her new storage furniture was indeed fit to purpose and their installation replaced a small desk. She graciously offered that desk back to Crossroads a beautiful example of the kind of sharing and efficiency we love! "Recycling is better than wasting," Ms Choi said, with her ever present smile. "These items are precious resources for those with little money to spare!" It’s our privilege to walk with thousands of individuals and families referred to us by the Social Welfare Department and by NGOs each year. We help with goods that turn bare flats into homes, that invest in their children’s educations, and maximise possibilities even for those on the most minimal of incomes.

To help those in need is as simple a principle as ABC. I come to Crossroads to volunteer because I live nearby. And I get to communicate with friends from different cultures. That makes me very happy. Both my Chinese and English are very fluent. So I can facilitate the communications between Hong Kong families and the volunteers, so they can get the furniture they need. Gilbert, volunteer, Hong Kong Distribution 34

Dicky - Social worker "My dream as a young boy was to help people in poverty in Hong Kong," says social worker Dicky. He's one of the many social workers who visit Crossroads with their social welfare clients, helping them choose the goods from our stock that will most suit their needs. "I was quite stunned when I first saw Crossroads' warehouse," says Dicky. "I never imagined there would be so many goods for my clients and others." We think social workers like Dicky are walking angels! It's a joy to partner with them to help meet the needs of some of Hong Kong's most vulnerable. 35

HONG THE MOVE: KONGOUR "WEST SIDE STORY" They say that which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. At the start of this period, mid 2015, we received word that the Government of the HKSAR needed to resume the western part of our current property to develop for residential accommodation.

The ‘no’s in our Christmas stocking had been genuinely unexpected and we needed to achieve, in just two and a half months, a now enormous task on the eastern side. It would take labour well beyond our own and funding greater than we had needed to raise before, in an equivalent time.

We grappled to absorb the news. As we did so, though, we discovered help on all sides. The Government held innumerable consultations with us as we sought answers. The property sector swung into action, offering pro bono short term solutions and even, in one case, a fairly positive looking long term answer. Experts in a range of professions donated their services to guide us.

Donors, amazingly, came alongside with financial support. Volunteers raised their hands from across Hong Kong and around the world. People joined our team, short term, just to see us through the time. Companies gave discounted or pro bono services.

Over the ensuing months, we faced a series of questions. Q: Would we need to move in entirety? A: Thankfully, it turned out, no. Q: Would we fit on the remaining section (without, currently, permission to knock down buildings and reconstruct to purpose)? A: No. We would need supplementary provision. Q: Should we then move outright to other pieces of land suggested? A: Not possible, we learned. Q: Were there further pieces to be located off site? A: Possibly. Not all questions were answered. We faced a range of variables and permutations. In time, our first steps became clear: we would invest in a Government-provided storage site to absorb some warehousing departments. For the balance of our needs, a couple of near or apparent ‘certainties’ seemed the answers. Christmas, though, brought a couple of shocks. Options that had appeared almost 100% positive were unexpectedly now a ‘no’. Our only course was to consolidate, ‘Tetris like’, on to the eastern side.

40

More and more departments began packing up their work places. Personnel packed their domestic spaces. In the end, we relocated the contents of 12 major storage areas, 3 processing stations, 5 simulation x-periences, 1 major meeting facility and 45 apartments. We made our due-date, March 15th, 2016. We were out of the western side. That said, we were not fully ‘in’ the eastern side and there is more renovation and reconstruction to go, but our West Side story was complete. And, yes, the saying is true. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Even as the dust settles, we have been able not only to restore most of our operations but even build back better. Another saying, too, is true. "The one who stands with you, in your worst days, is the one you can count on." That surely describes each of you who walked this with us. No words can express our gratitude. We tried to ‘map’ out the journey of this period as it was a memorable one. Open the double page spread to see the result.

THANK YOU "If we all do our part, I believe we can get Crossroads through this!" That quote, from one of our long term supporters, put wind in our sails as we stared down a task way beyond our reach. We needed money, labour and expertise. Where were we to find it? "We have, one could say, an elephant in the room." Malcolm Begbie, one of our founding directors, said, describing the situation to potential supporters. The phrase stuck. During an intensive building phase, we launched an ‘Elephant Campaign’ for needed funds. Gavin Coates, cartoonist, drew us a very uncomfortable looking elephant in a crowded room and, weeks later, drew a most grateful elephant bounding into freedom. (Pictured in fold out.) It perfectly expressed our gratitude to donors large and small. Here are just a few examples out of countless donations. Companies and foundations kept wondrous donations coming during that time and in the months that followed. The ever creative Barney Cheng, Hong Kong fashion designer, liaised with a family member who sells Meyer’s cookware and spent a weekend raising HK$250,000, selling Meyer’s products, featuring well-known Hong Kong chefs. This gift came on top of HK$1 million which he, his brother Jon and the family foundation had already given. Chinachem too gave a million dollars. The Kadoorie family gave ¾ million. Swire Trust and Cathay staff (with matched donations) gave another ¾ million between them. The Peter Bennet Foundation’s Mission Possible, thinking laterally as ever, gave us a matching grant of HK$250,000 raised during an event at the Hong Kong Sevens. Some of our very major donors requested anonymity, so we honour that request, but you

know who you are and some of you also gave in the millions! Others gave pro bono support. Cordells and Professional Property Services gave property advice. Executive Counsel gave, indeed, counsel. Nelson Chen Architects and Arup advised us on technical matters, M Moser dedicated huge resource to design, Crown and Columbia helped with trucking. Our arborists, who tend our trees, ingeniously created a system to carry heavy items to higher floors. Round Table gave shipping containers for storage. Long term corporate friends discounted their services, including Ikea with kitchen support, Law Wing Kee with construction and Fortune Engineering with electrical support. Marvellous as all of this was, we nonetheless needed a veritable army of volunteers. And you came! Over the time, international volunteers joined us for weeks and months to help. Daily, students, teachers, moving companies, police(!) volunteers, NGOs, corporate groups, community groups sweated beside us to make it happen. You packed, you lifted, you built. And then came the thoughtful extra touches. A volunteer, Belinda, for example, placed welcome flowers in the homes of all who moved. So many of you went above and beyond to care for us.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We felt upheld, carried, in fact, by you all. You put us back together, stronger than ever. Though we’re on a smaller footprint, the work has not downsized and we are almost back up to full operational strength to serve those in need. Onward and upward!

Georgia - Helping change the world at 6! When little Georgia turned 6, it was Crossroads who received the birthday gift! Her party guests gave funds to a collection for Crossroads, and Georgia came in person to deliver the cheque. "If other people don’t have money, we have to give them stuff we don’t need," she says. We love helping kids find ways to make a difference in the world. No hands are too small to help! 49

ENVIRONMENT "I used to say that, as an engineer, I was trained to solve problems. That is true, but, more significantly, I was trained to define problems so that we ensure we address the right thing. This is never more complex than when addressing poverty and the environment: each both cause and effect of one another. Poverty, for example, sees a farmer deprived of education which may result in land degradation and, thus, inadequate crop yield, deepening his poverty." Nigel Langdon, who leads the strategy for our Environment Department, expresses it well. The vicious cycle plays out across the complex landscape of need we serve. At Crossroads we try to target a range of strategies locally and globally that advocate for environmental sustainability. Here on our own property, we try ourselves to walk the talk, from the plates we use at lunch, to energy-efficient air conditioners in our buildings, to the 33,585 kg of materials we recycled in 2015-16.

L A T N E M E N V I RO N H E RO E S

Nikki wasn't always an environmental hero. Her story started when she was a young mother with babies and a growing collection of baby gear her little one had outgrown. "I needed space at home!" she says, and knew there must be many families in the same boat. Meanwhile, Nikki saw with sadness the mountains of discarded furniture, including designer chairs and working refrigerators, in estate dumping areas. She knew how much they could help people in need in her own city, and the damage that landfill was doing to the environment.

She swung into action. She began collecting goods from households around her neighbourhood and distributing them to NGOs and needy families in Hong Kong. It wasn't long before demand for her services snowballed, and she knew it was time to register as an offficial charity. Nikki's NGO 'DB Mothers and Friends' has now grown from a tiny neighbourhood pick-up service on Saturdays to a Hong Kong-wide social enterprise that employs people in need of a job to drive on pickups every day.

Happily, she found us! We have been in partnership with DB Mothers and Friends since 2014 and have grown so close that they now give us 99% of the goods they collect: 1-2 trucks' worth of goods of amazing quality each day! Nikki herself is unstoppable. "It's more than a full-time job," she says. The days can start at 6 am and end as late as 10 pm, but to Nikki (pictured), it's worth it. In this city, where >3.5 million tons goes to landfill each year, the need for what she does is greater than ever. They say that not all heroes wear capes! It’s people like Nikki who convince us that heroes walk amongst us, helping Hong Kong fight for a fairer and more sustainable future.

I only feel angry when I see waste, when I see people throwing away things we could use. Mother Theresa 52

Dee Dee - goods donor Dee Dee, a Hong Kong native, knows the challenges her city faces with space and waste. "Hong Kong needs better awareness of where all our trash builds up," she says. "We all tend to throw it away and move on. We need to change this disposable mindset." Dee Dee and her husband Harry love using Crossroads as a solution. They've donated household items like computers and furniture many times, using our online platforms, and it's thanks to donors like them, that we receive so many high quality goods to share with people in need in Hong Kong and around the world! Crossroads was required, on 15th March 2016, to vacate 2 hectares of the 5.6 hectare site. This was returned and auctioned by the government for construction of residential apartments.

Foundations and Charities $4,397,584

Crossroads’ entire operation was required to consolidate on to the remaining 3.6 hectares. This process was a capital intensive process for which significant funds were required. Hence, during the period, HK$5.2 million was received from donors specifically for relocation purposes. This greatly increased funds received during the current period. For better comparison, 2015/16 income, excluding the relocation component, was HK$18.9 million as compared to the 2014/15 equivalent of HK$15.2 million.

Donations from corporations increased from HK$1.8 million in 2014/15 to HK$5.2 million the following year. Donations from foundations and charitable organisations increased from HK$4.4 million to HK$6.4 million. These major increases reduced the relative proportion of donations received from individuals (from 51.5% of total income in 2014/15 down to 44.3% in 2015/16.) The overall average donation amount increased from HK$15,740 in 2014/15 to HK$18,828 in the current period. Activities for the year resulted in a surplus $5 million. As at the year end, though, the refurbishment and other relocation process was still underway. A full summary of the relocation will be included in the following year.

General Funds significantly increased over the period. This is considered largely to be a contingent result of relocation funding efforts. Not surprisingly the designated funds for the operational divisions reduced, at least, in part because some funds have been diverted by donors to relocation or general donations. This reduction in turn contributed to a reduction in divisional output.

56

The financial numbers are based on management accounts for the period 1st July 2015 to 30th June 2016.

EXPENDITURE BY FUNCTION 2015/16 Global Hand $962,531

Global Distribution $5,846,429

Global Handicrafts $1,492,037

Crossroads leases the current site from the Government of the HKSAR as a charity on a Short Term Tenancy basis. Because of this, there is no formal basis for capitalising costs incurred on the relocation process, even though a significant element could be considered leasehold Improvements. Assets are capitalised if it is deemed that they are removable and re-mountable in an alternate location.

Other Projects $1,371,325

Administration $935,689

Other $2,073,667

The results stemming from the functional expenditure are indicated in the respective sections of the Annual Report. The relocation process led to major logistical and infrastructural disruption that impacted warehousing, processing, experiential facilities and accommodation. While the operations continued throughout, the redirection of resources clearly disrupted the output for the period. Global Distribution, for example saw a reduction in output of 25% from the previous year.

Fundraising $659,255

Global $2,759,852

During the current year, HK$2 million in fully depreciated assets were written off the books since they related to invested funds associated with the portion of the site returned to the Government.

Relocation $4,723,048

Capital Expenditure $478,724

The relocation requirement, with increase in designated donations and project specific expenditures, makes comparison between the years difficult. The following tables have been compiled using operation numbers, but excluding the relocation component in both cases.

Overall, operational expenditure was lower in 2015/16 than 2014/15 because functional capacity was necessarily diverted to the relocation process. Global Distribution expenditure significantly reduced. The relocation process severely impacted the warehousing and goods processing facilities.
