Welfare: In Hong Kong, we actively support the Social Welfare Department and a wide range of NGOs in providing help to individuals and families living in vulnerable circumstances.
Development: Our humanitarian aid is targeted towards entrenched poverty. We redistribute quality goods donated by the Hong Kong community to NGOs, in over 95 countries, who have applied to us with details of their needs and development plans. Follow up and feedback provide ways for all of us to track the effectiveness of the distribution and the sustainability of its outcomes. Relief: Crossroads’ Global Distribution also addresses major disasters. We target disaster reduction, prepositioning and response, seeking to comply with Sphere Standards in Humanitarian Response to ensure best practice.
As well as our physical warehouse, Crossroads has a virtual one: www.globalhand.org. Anywhere in the world, real time, people with quality goods or services to donate can offer them through our Global Hand service. We will then pass on the offer to our network of NGOs in Europe, Africa, SE Asia, Central Asia and the Americas seeking the right ‘match’.

Placing goods carefully is all important to us. We are strongly committed to doing so wisely and well. Our experienced team works with both sides to ensure that donated goods are placed where they are truly needed and can make a strategic difference in others’ lives. Our network includes seasoned NGOs who specialise in humanitarian logistics.
We welcome donations large and small: by the box, the pallet or container load. NGOs are welcome to let us know if your programmes can use donated goods. We’d be glad to talk and match up wherever possible! ABOUT CROSSROADS WE CONNECT PEOPLE IN A WORLD OF NEED
The old proverb says: I cannot understand a man until I have walked a mile in his shoes. When people participate in Global X-periences, they do not watch a video or listen to a presentation about global issues. They take a few steps ‘in the shoes’ of people in need. If they are interested in poverty, for example, they x-perience simulated manual labour and corrupt market practice together with the battle for shelter, food, education and medical care. We offer x-periential programmes on war, HIV/AIDS, blindness, hunger, water access, inequality in trade and the complex global range of issues that hold billions in poverty. Many people find experiential learning far more powerful than the spoken or written word. Over 180,000 participants have undertaken x-periential programmes, with interest in them growing. Participants include students, Par tic ipants du Refug business teams, community groups, families ee" sim ring our "A D ulatio Forum n at th ay in the Lif 2017. and individual visitors. e of a e Wo rld Eco

For many in poverty, humanitarian aid is not enough. They need a job with a reliable income. So we provide ‘business solutions’ for people in poverty: fair trade and social enterprises. Our Global Handicrafts shop, at the Crossroads Village site, is an enchanting, multicultural marketplace of items from Hong Kong and around the world. They are purchased on a fair trade basis that sees a fair income go to artisans and producers who are living in economic need. www.globalhandicrafts.org The Silk Road Café sells fair trade teas and coffees from around the world. It also serves snacks from local Hong Kong social enterprise businesses. All sales help provide income for people in need. It’s an oasis of refreshment and community, themed with the colours, patterns and textiles of the Silk Road. www.globalhandicrafts.org/cafe helps generate trade products The sale of fair in Hong Kong le in need with income for peop e world. and around th

There is a deep sadness on this island. Earlier in the year, thousands would arrive by night and, within a day or two, be moved on to other countries. Political changes across Europe, however, have seen doors closing. The number arriving at night, now, is more like a hundred. The tragedy is, though, that the number being moved on, each day, is only 3 or 4. This is heartbreaking mathematics. A hundred in, and just 3 or 4 out, each day. Before long, the camps will need to handle twice or even three times the number of people that they were designed for. Worse, with the wave of political changes, most of the money that had resourced this camp has now dried up and major agencies have moved away. The burden of care, therefore, has been left largely on local NGOs. Although ERCI began with search and rescue operations, they are now needing to run medical clinics in the camps and help with the camp management. “People ask us why we do this when we don’t have the funds to do it. We tell them we do it because there is no one else,” said their Programme Director, Mirella Alexou.
REFUGEES HELPING OTHERS HELP REFUGEES
SEA OF HUMAN PAIN As we entered one camp, a man on crutches reached out to our colleagues. He was holding an x-ray. It took time but the translator finally told us his story. He was the victim of religious persecution. He had witnessed the torture of his wife and three children under eight. That torture had also taken away his mobility and left his kidneys badly damaged. His attackers took his wife, children and father away from him. Later, grotesquely, he was sent photos of the wife and the children in their beaten state, along with one of his father after they had tortured him to death, a religious symbol shoved into his mouth. It is impossible to begin to understand the depth of suffering among these people, each with a tragic account: a huge sea of human pain.

Challenge of Water: Elementary students undertook our simula tions of world need, in this case the issue of water access. For many you ng children, like those in Uganda, pictured fur the r up, life requires the daily hauling of water, often over long distances. This is sometimes so time consuming it prevents their being able to att end school. We try to simula te this with visiting Ho ng Kong kids of similar age : a brief encounter wit h the cost their counterparts pay for water in too ma ny struggling economies .

GUATEMALA:
HELPING OTHERS GENERATE FAIR INCOME
JOY IN THE TRENCHES
There's relief when war ends, but it often leaves a deadly legacy. In Guatemala, civil war stopped back in the 90s but the country still hovers at the top of the charts for violent crimes and homicides. As well as being a hot spot for drug cartels and paedophile rings, it has one of the highest murder rates in the world. So daily life in Guatemalan cities can still feel somewhat like living in a battle zone. It's therefore no surprise that thousands of families send their children across the border unaccompanied, trying to give at least one generation the chance at a peaceful future. A collective of women is working towards change. They live in the city of Esperanza in an area known as the 'Red Zone': a part so dangerous that tourists are warned not to visit. The name Esperanza, though, means 'hope' and these women have come together in the belief that hope can indeed triumph. They formed a fair trade group UPAVIM: a Spanish acronym which, in translation, stands for "United for a better life". Some of the craftswomen at UPAVIM have lost children, nieces and nephews to gang violence. Yet the hope remains and is evident in their work. "The beautiful colours, the conversations shared over cups of coffee, the sound of children's laughter, and the collective force of empowered women make Esperanza and UPAVIM an inspirational and joyful place to live and work," say staff. "By making a fair wage we have been able to pull ourselves out of poverty, improve our living conditions, feed and care for our families and send our children to school." We now sell their handmade crafts in traditional fabrics: strings of plush hearts, tiny dolls and 'snuggle bunny' cuddle toys. It's difficult to reconcile these beautiful, joyful toys with the grief that some of their creators have endured, raising their children on the front lines of fear and violence. We're glad to walk with them, though, in bringing their story of courage and their handiwork to a global audience.
HOW CAN WE H E L P YO U SUPPORT DEC E N T W O R K? • Visit our sho p and café at Crossroads Village, open Tuesday-Saturd ay, 10-5pm. • Book a fair tr ade shopping tour for your g roup. KAZAKHSTAN:
SILENT NIGHT FOR DEAF YOUTH IN KAZAKHSTAN
For the 150,000 people with hearing disabilities in Kazakhstan, it can, indeed, be a silent, lonely existence. Services for the deaf and understanding of support are still a challenge in many areas, particularly those living in poverty. Some grow up never learning any formal sign language because their families are unable to access support. Our Christmas cards in 2016 were made by deaf and hearing impaired young adults. They carefully crafted the cards' hand-made components, drawing on cultural elements traditional to the region and even the humour with which, despite life's difficulties, they wonderfully embed in their craft. 27

HELPING OTHERS HELP COMMUNITIES
THE WAR-WEARY VILLAGES OF DR CONGO History says that the most recent war in DR Congo ended in 2003, but people on the ground live with a different reality, especially those in the nation's East. Here, there are still pockets of brutal violence, where families are fleeing their homes at a moment's notice, loved ones are slaughtered and rape is wielded as a weapon of war. Pendeze, a young Congolese woman, lives in one of these communities. She can speak to the ongoing conflict from bitter, firsthand experience. When she was a teenager, Pendeze and her family were forced from their home during an attack. They tried to hide in the bush, but soldiers found the family and killed Pendeze's mother and father in front of her. It left a deep, open scar on Pendeze's young heart and she longed for revenge. She joined a rebel group and fought as a soldier while still in her teens, until finally she had the

opportunity to return home. As with so many child soldiers, though, she found 'home' no longer existed. The warm faces of family and the close community she had known had been destroyed. She had to rebuild life from scratch. In this, she was helped by our partners on the ground. Despite the odds, this group has developed several strategic arms of support. They have created a refuge which our shipment helped furnish. In this haven, people can meet, finding healing after their years, even decades of trauma, including the sexual abuse which so typically marks these conflicts.
INTERNATIONAL AID HELPING OTHERS HELP COMMUNITIES
Our shipment also helped equip a medical centre. Hospital beds we sent are being used for new mothers and are, they told us, "so beautiful that the health centre manager felt obliged to repaint the room to fit with the beds!" Even the provision of something as simple as refrigeration played a role. Prior to this, it was hard for them to get blood for transfusions, but "with a fridge, the blood is now made available and the community so much helped". That refrigeration also permits them to store medicine which needs temperature control.
Tools in the shipment created jobs for 50 youth, now able to find work as painters. In a war zone, a reliable job, even a basic one, helps anchor lives. Books in our shipment filled the community's first library since the start of the most recent conflict. Finally, fabric and sewing machines from Crossroads have helped train people in valuable tailoring skills. Pendeze, the young woman whose life was devastated by her suffering, is herself one of the tailoring school's success stories. She now runs her own business and owns two sewing machines. She's a walking example of hope, and the way a shattered life can be healed and begin again. Our partners are seeing many, many more follow in her footsteps since the arrival of our shipment. They estimate that the goods we were privileged to send have impacted more than 4,000 people directly, and more than 10,000 indirectly.

Madeleine is widowed, with three children to support. Like many in her plight, she needed an income. Our partners in Benin train local women, but need sewing machines to make it happen. HELPING OTHERS AROUND THE WORLD DONATING GOODS OUTSIDE HONG KONG Question: "If I have goods to donate in another country, can Crossroads help? Or do you only take goods in Hong Kong?" It's a question we meet a lot. Answer: We have an arm of our work devoted precisely to that. It's not a physical warehouse. It's a virtual one online. It is called Global Hand. HOW CAN YOU DONATE GOODS IN OTHER COUNTRIES? Global Hand has a network of NGOs around the world. If a donor (eg a company, non-profit, educational institution or other) has new or used goods, in any country, they let our team know at www.globalhand.org. We then 'ping' our NGOs and see if we can find a good match, whether across the road or across the world, guided by our goal of attaining best practice in product placement. Here is a sampling of places around the world where goods were placed this year.

DO YOU HAVE GOODS TO DONATE OUTSIDE HONG KONG? If you have product in good condition, whether new or second hand, we'd love to hear, wherever it is in the world. S R E H T O G N I G P N L E O H K G N O H P L HE WHEN A SOFA BED IS MORE THAN A SOFA BED... We deliberately photographed the men in the photo from behind. We wanted to be sure we didn't show their faces. Mr Kwan (name changed) was very glad to receive what he needed, but that joy was tinged with feelings of shame about the circumstance which had left him in dire straits. His story told of one low point after another. Serious depression had combined with long term insomnia to lead Mr Kwan to start abusing sleeping pills to get through each night. His marriage broke down. He moved away from his wife and young son. He then lost his job. Living on his own, on government assistance to survive, Mr Kwan hit rock bottom. "In 2013, I suddenly realised that my life couldn't go on like this," he said. "My son is not young any more. I don't want to miss any more moments of his growth. I've given him so little. I want to compensate for what I did in the past." 5-6 VANS of goods delivered help to Hong Kong daily

On his slow climb back to health and better relationships, Mr Kwan was hit again, this time with heart problems that led to two heart surgeries. When we saw him at our site, he had recently undergone the surgery, saying his doctor had advised him to move slowly, avoiding rapid movements while he heals. The younger man helping Mr Kwan on our site was his son, now a teenager. The father had finally been granted access to his son, and he was desperate to bond and make up for lost time. Mr Kwan's previous apartment was too small to have his son stay overnight. With joy, he told us he'd been granted a larger apartment, but didn't have the needed furniture. "I really want to take this single sofa bed," he told our staff. "It will mean my son can stay with me and sleep on it from time to time." He had hoped that coming together to our warehouse would be a bonding moment in itself as his son selected furniture he would use, the sofa bed pictured in particular. "I want him to join me in the process of creating this new home," he said.
The road ahead is still long for Mr Kwan and his son, as they get to know each other once more. We were grateful to be able to find him a sofa bed, TV cabinet, wardrobe, and more. His story was an insight for us into the complex challenges and different kinds of pain that may be carried in through our gates with each person in need of help. For so many, their troubles compile one upon another until they must reach out for help, and it's at that point that we're privileged to respond with love and compassion.

STARTING OVER, ALONE "I don't know how to manage with my baby alone," said this young mother (pictured above), who found herself in crisis when the baby's father disappeared. Her social worker referred her to Crossroads, where we sought to support her new start in life. She received baby items and needed furniture, for which she was grateful. As well, though, she thanked us for the care. It was a relief to her simply to be treated with kindness. "This is my first time receiving goods," she said. "It feels so good. I'm very excited." 43

With a name like the 'Capital Group', this company absolutely knows the value of investment. And, when partnering with us, that investment is made into people's lives. Funding from Capital Group has released shipment after shipment for Crossroads, making it possible in 2016-17 for us to send no fewer than 5 x 40' containers to communities in Africa, all with the capacity to change lives and livelihoods. Staff from Capital Group even helped load some of these, knowing, as they closed the doors on a packed shipping container, those same doors would be opened again in a place where they can begin strategic change in a Ugandan school, a ST RATE GI C FU ND IN G Cameroonian health clinic or a Zambian community facility. We call it a capital idea! This year we again brought our refugee simulation before world leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos. CORPORATE PLEDGES FOR A WORLD IN CONFLICT Again this year, via the business.un.org web portal, a UN primary focus was seeking help from companies on a wide range of issues. The escalating refugee crises were of particular focus, with displacement driven by the challenges in Syria, South Sudan, among the Rohingya and other conflict zones. It is not surprising, then, that the majority of corporate pledges reflected this concern. 125 corporations, through the portal, made a Business Action Pledge in response to the refugee crisis. Consistent with current CSR practice, where businesses are increasingly aiming to use their core competencies to form an integral part of the solution, a majority of the pledges involved their own staff, goods or services. Some, for example, are using their regional power and influence to advocate for access by refugees to local labour markets and have introduced 52
refugee training and internship schemes in anticipation of the changes in law and regulation. Many universities, business schools and other tertiary training institutions have committed to scholarship programmes for refugee students, given the lack of education available for many refugee families. These institutions are diversely located in countries such as France, the United Kingdom, USA, Germany, The Netherlands, Hong Kong, The Gambia, Spain and Mexico. The power and reach of multinational companies enables them to donate significantly, and with speed. Many give funding but also provide practical in-kind help in a range of situations simultaneously within many countries. Examples on facing page.

CLASSES OF DONORS 2015/16
Last year’s urgent requirement to relocate a portion of our site generated significant additional support from Crossroads‘ stakeholders. In 2015/16, specific focused projects were launched, and wonderfully, a generous response occurred. The total revenue during the 2015/16 period was therefore unusual. Special one-off donations were received, for example, from foundations that typically sponsor construction. Companies, foundations, community groups and individuals not only gave generously, but also spread the word to encourage others to do the same.
Government $169,316
Foundations & Charities $6,409,826
Schools & Universities $1,668,978
64
Corporates $5,224,613
Individuals $10,715,293
Additionally, regular donors gave funds in advance of their normal giving schedules and so, in part, the project drew ahead against traditional donor giving. These are among the factors that greatly inflated the 2015/16 year and significantly impacted the reduction in overall donations during the current 2016/17 period. Total donations for 2016/17 were $14,686,221 as against the total for 2015/16 of $24,188,026. 2016/17 was a fairly average year, in comparison with our normal annual funds, albeit a little depressed because of the ‘front-loading' donations in the year before.

CLASSES OF DONORS 2016/17 Government $108,437

Individuals $5,440,644
Schools & Universities $1,329,291 Corporates $4,483,336
The above said, part of the relocation process spilled over into 2016/17 and a portion of this year’s budget was needed for that. The balance yielded $13,856,221 for the 2016/17 period. Of this amount, $5,076,133 (33.6%) was generated through the Global X-perience and the Global Handicraft divisions. Additionally, a further $3,480,026 (25.1%) was contributed by the full time, part time and occasional volunteers. These sources, over 50%, wonderfully reduce the organisational dependence on philanthropic donations. The chart 'Classes of Donors 2016/17', shows the dollar amounts received which in terms of relative percentages indicates that of the income received, Individuals contributed 37%, Corporates 31%, Foundations and Charities 23%, Schools 9% and other sources 1%. In 2015/16, aside from the relocation income, the proportion of general funding to total funding was 44.6%, largely due to the relocation surge. This reduced to 25.4% in 2016/17. Additional focus is currently being made to increase the proportion of these important non-designated funds.

The outcome and impact of the above functional expenditures can be seen in the respective sections of this Annual Report. Of the total 2016/17 functional costs, the Global Distribution division still remains the heaviest user of resources at $5,654,232 (42%). This is due to a range of factors including its occupying significant space for storage and processing and having the largest number of allocated volunteers. The measurable impact of this investment of time and resources continues to be significant. The Global X-perience and Global Handicraft divisions, between them, account for $3,682,523 (27%) of total functional costs. Against this, though, with their combined revenue of $5,076,133 they contribute a net surplus of $1,393,610 to overall operations of other areas of the work.

THE RELOCATION As we went to print last Annual Report, the relocation project was still in process and it was not possible to give a detailed financial account. We therefore promised that full report this time around. It follows. The entire project was initially budgeted to cost $6,583,940. How grateful we all are that in response to our need, 300 separate donations were received totaling HK$6,344,695. As an organisation we have been humbled by the response, but grateful, that because of it, we have been able to negotiate the relocation challenge, under budget, and within crucial government mandated deadlines. What we gave away • Returning 2 hectares of land to the government. • Vacating 47 apartments and four significant buildings used for goods storage and processing. • Losing space for a massive marquee which was able to handle large numbers of people. What we now have • Land area: 3.55 hectares of land at the former Perowne Barracks on the Gold Coast and 0.65 hectares of land at Sunny Bay. The new lease enabled us to use parts of the land areas previously off limits. • Building GFA: 8,872sqm for operations and 5,014sqm for residential use, made up of 16x3 bedroom apartments, 8x2 bedroom apartments, 20x studio apartments and 14x2 bed dormitory rooms. What were some of the main achievements? • The marquee was reassembled at Sunny Bay, providing a flexible goods holding & sorting area. • Two floors of a former residential block were returned from processing and simulation space, to be used for team accommodation once again. • A major rework of the former goods receiving building was undertaken. It was converted to a multipurpose simulation building, absorbing some the numbers formerly covered by the marquee. • The former medical supplies building was converted into the goods receiving centre. • The furniture storage area received a major roof refurbishment enabling its entire floor area to be effectively used. • Seven storage containers were herring-boned onto a newly accessible piece of land. Our thanks to all of you who were part of this major undertaking. We could not have done it without you.
