Crossroads Annual Report 2014 - 2015
DIRECTORS’ NOTE In 2015, Crossroads turned twenty years old. It’s been a time to look back at the work done since we began. What has been the outcome of those 20 years? What is life like today for those we sought to help along the way? One aspect of this process struck us repeatedly and greatly encouraged us. We have never been a cash-rich organisation. So our role hasn’t been to inject large amounts of capital funding into the NGOs we serve. What we can invest, though, is a capital injection of goods: one which can literally get an organisation up and running. Here’s how that works. In Europe, in 1999, Romania was battling deep poverty. Visionaries worked with the government to see a new university train up professionals to forge a different future. They had a grant for a building,
but not its interior. Crossroads outfitted dormitories, offices, lectures rooms and more, saving them hundreds of thousands of dollars. This year, two of our staff re-visited it and were told: “95% of what you see here came from Crossroads and has served our students all this time.” In Hong Kong, NGO St Stephen’s Society has provided an excellent drug rehabilitation service for many years. As people recover from addiction, they stay in apartments across Hong Kong. St Stephen’s has opened approx. 270 apartments, “most of which you helped furnish,” they tell us. It delights us to think of the potential for change in people coming through their doors over that stretch of 20 years. That is one of Crossroads’ major strategic goals: to invest for life. It happens through our goods distribution, our simulations, our partnerships service and our fair trade work. A business partner said to us, recently, “You need to tell the real picture of those impacted by Crossroads. You tell us that x people were impacted in

any given year, but you forget that, with the investments from previous years, any given year also sees many others continue to be impacted. Your investments are, literally, a gift that keeps on giving. Work out that number and tell us what it is.” We did as he said. Long days and nights went into that assessment process. Finally, we came up with the following figure. It’s conservative, because our accountants are always that way, but here it is: PEOPLE DIRECTLY IMPACTED 1995-2000: 100,000 2001-2005: 1.5 million 2006-2010: 1.8 million 2011-2015: 2.9 million Looking back over 20 years, then, over 6 million people have been directly impacted by Crossroads. We examined the various time periods in some detail, allowing for attrition, obsolescence and other of life’s realities. Our conclusion was that while 2014-2015 saw 625,000 people directly impacted, the fuller picture is that this same
time period saw at least 3.2 million affected. Probably far more. Throughout this annual report, then, alongside stories from 2014-15, you will find ‘20 years: Investing for Life’ stories that chronicle Crossroads’ long term investment in our partners locally and around the world. We have reported not only on our shipments, but also on our fair trade investments that have generated income for the poor, on our simulation x-periences which have resulted in long-term changes, and more. None of this could have happened without the support, financial provision, expertise, volunteering and friendship which so many have given. We are grateful beyond words for all of you who walk this road with us.
Thank you for investing in us because, in doing so, you invest for
life. Malcolm and Sally Begbie, Directors

WHAT IS CROSSROADS FOUNDATION? Our goal is to be a crossroads in a broken world: connecting people in need with those who can help.
Crossroads’ Global Distrubtion provides aid for relief and development in over 90 countries, as well as in Hong Kong, our headquarters.
Welfare:
In Hong Kong, we actively support the Social Welfare Department and a wide range of NGOs in providing help to individuals and families living in vulnerable circumstances.
Development: Our humanitarian aid targets
entrenched poverty. We redistribute quality goods donated by the Hong Kong community to NGOs, in over 90 countries, who have applied to us with details of their needs and development plans. Follow up and feedback provide ways for all of us to track the effectiveness of the distribution and the sustainability of its outcomes.
Relief:
Crossroads’ Global Distribution also addresses major disasters. We target disaster reduction, prepositioning and response, seeking to comply with Sphere Standards in Humanitarian Response to ensure best practice.

For many in poverty, humanitarian aid is not enough. They need a job with a reliable income. So we provide ‘business solutions’ for people in poverty: fair trade and social enterprises. Our Global Handicrafts shop, at the Crossroads Village site, is an enchanting, multicultural marketplace of items from Hong Kong and around the world. They are purchased on a ‘fair trade’ basis that sees a ‘fair’ income go to artisans and producers who are living in economic need. www.globalhandicrafts.org The Silk Road Café sells fair trade teas and coffees from around the world. It also serves snacks from local Hong Kong social enterprise businesses. All sales help provide income for people in need. It’s an oasis of refreshment and community, themed with the colours, patterns and textiles of the Silk Road. www.globalhandicrafts.org/cafe

In today’s world, many for-profit and non-profit organisations are trying to make a difference. Both are often looking for partners, but may struggle to find them. Global Hand offers a ‘matching’ website service. It helps connect people who want to help with poverty, climate change, education, employment, migration, HIV/AIDS, disaster response/reduction, water issues, shelter, food security, environmental responsibility or the many other global challenges. Whether you are a company or an NGO, Global Hand can help ‘match’ you if you are interested in strategic partnerships, humanitarian aid, gifts-in-kind, capacity building, advocacy, skilled volunteering, philanthropy, project funding, academic support or more. Global Hand has also built an online matching system for the United Nations to facilitate UN partnerships with corporations: www.business.un.org. You are welcome to find projects and partners through Global Hand. www.globalhand.org

The old proverb says: I cannot understand a man until I have walked a mile in his shoes. When people participate in Global X-periences, they do not watch a video or listen to a presentation about global issues. They take a few steps ‘in the shoes’ of people in need. If they are interested in poverty, for example, they x-perience simulated manual labour and corrupt market practice together with the battle for shelter, food, education and medical care. We offer x-periential programmes on war, HIV/AIDS, blindness, hunger, water access, inequality in trade and the complex global range of issues that hold billions in poverty. Many people find experiential learning far more powerful than the spoken or written word. Over 100,000 participants have undertaken x-periential programmes, with interest in them growing. Participants include students, business teams, community groups, families and individual visitors.

When the Nepal earthquake hit in 2015, Crossroads responded immediately. Here in Hong Kong, we air-freighted aid in the crucial weeks after the tragedy and followed them up with shipments. We also helped ‘match’ donors in other countries with organisations working in Nepal and we saw funds raised for NGOs on the ground involved in both the immediate rescue and the rebuilding needed, long after the dust had settled.
EUROPE & MIDDLE EAST For our twentieth anniversary, team members, Joel and Jerusha Van Vugt, made follow-up visits to long term partners in Romania, Moldova and Israel. All told the same story: these partnerships had seen years of results. Crossroads cannot make a heavy financial investment into partners, but we can make a capital investment of goods and other kinds. These are investments for life.

Crossroads’ Engagement Services head, Jason Noble, spent time in Uganda visiting educational NGOs who had recently received shipments from Crossroads. He saw first-hand the benefit of Crossroads’ goods in situ. Even simple provision such as school desks and chairs can ‘qualify’ a school to become an exam centre for students. We sent plenty of furniture, along with computers, educational toys and clothing.

LONG TERM INVESTMENT IN RWANDAN REFUGEES If you saw the movie, Hotel Rwanda, you’ll remember its searing agony. The pain was almost palpable. There was a deeper tragedy, though. A journalist in the movie captured it well. “People,” he said, “would see the suffering, and say ‘That’s horrible’ and then go on eating their dinners.” He was right. The Rwandan genocide, in 1994, saw 800,000 people killed while we, globally, largely turned our backs. One of the worst aspects of war is that we get ‘used’ to it. The pain of Rwanda’s refugees has continued from that day
until now. So has the need for help. In 2004, some of our team happened upon Rwandan refugees living in Kenya. Although ten years had passed since the end of the war, they were still unable to go home. Today, many remain. How can they survive? Many lost everything in the conflict: family, home and possessions. The one thing war could not take, though, was their tradition. So these enterprising Rwandans put their age-old skills to good work and created cards and crafts to sell,
distributed through NGOs around the world. In Crossroads, we have sold their highly original work ever since we met them, helping generate income for them, on a fair trade basis. A big seller has been their fascinating Christmas sets, made with stunning character and ‘packaged’ in a gourd from
their region. (See photo above) We often say, at Crossroads, we invest ‘for life’. It’s been a decade since these Rwandan refugees started selling through us and they continue to today. Ten years is not a long time in the aftermath of war.

CONFLICT ZONES THE WAR NO ONE SPOKE OF At the time, it was the war no one spoke of. The United Nations described it as the most neglected disaster in the world. Northern Uganda: a place where a nightmare was played out, largely unnoticed by the rest of humanity, for twenty years. Lord’s Resistance Army rebels, led by the infamous Joseph Kony, would enter villages, often at night, to abduct children as child soldiers or rebel ‘brides’. Some were as young as 7. Children were often forced to kill siblings or parents: a strategy
16
designed to make them feel too guilty to escape the rebels and sneak back home. Those who resisted the LRA were usually shot. The abducted children often spent years in the bush. There they were taught to pillage, torture, cannabilise and kill. It was normal for ears and lips to be cut off, as a threat to any who would ‘talk’. Children were traded with neighbouring countries for ammunition. Others became cannon fodder, some as young as 4, since young children, in these skirmishes, are not necessarily issued weapons. Crossroads shipped, year after year, to this location supporting work among these young lives. When our team visited, they were told “Take a good look round. Everything you see came from Crossroads.” They saw tables, chairs, beds, sheets, shoes, clothes, educational supplies, cupboards, cabinets, computers for the educational system and equipment for vocational training. The children’s favourite was a surprise to us all. One of the key

leaders in the area, David Livingstone, asked us if we had any playground equipment “because counsellors advise us that the children of war need to ‘learn how to be kids’ again.” The very week he asked, we received an offer from an international school in Hong Kong offering, amazingly, a brand new set of swings, slides and climbing equipment, worth US$20,000. Once in Uganda, it was used from sun up to sun down. The clothing we provided was, they said, “probably the only clothing they own” and the warm lunch, cooked on our donated cookware “the only meal they eat per day.” The impact of our shipments continues to this day. Even the containers we sent were kept and used as extra classrooms, with a roof between them providing even more classroom space. Twenty years on, the rebels have now gone but the work continues as does the pain in the area. David says that hitting
‘re-start’ for a community so utterly beleagured, is exceedingly hard. Unemployment has been at 99% and the division and struggle, after people in this community have spent years fighting each other, is difficult to heal. David himself has broadened his work to include agriculture, small businesses to help families and communities re-start. He has also opened up medical work to battle a new illness, the infamous Nodding’s Disease, which is claiming the lives of their children in the post war era. He joins us at the World Economic Forum when we take the Refugee Run there as we seek to keep this desperate part of the world before world leaders who can help. It is our goal, at Crossroads, to invest for life. Our partnership in Northern Uganda is one example of many we celebrate in this our anniversary year.

DECENT WORK

FAIR TRADE BUYS GOATS When is a goat worth more than a goat? An odd question, perhaps, but for one group of women in South-Western China, the answer is empowering! In our fair trade marketplace, we sell handiwork made by these women and, with
the profits returned, they have just bought new goats. The goats produce three very valuable things: milk for their families and for extra income, new baby goats that will spread the benefit to more in their community, and lastly...ahem... fertiliser! (The manure produced by their goats means they don’t need to buy fertiliser for their
farms, cutting costs and makes their produce organic.) The goat project, kick-started by our ‘fair trade premium’ payment, began with a new goat for 10 families, but as they produce more baby goats, the project is expected to help 200 families in Yunnan! We love the multiplier effect of fair trade.
TURNING TRASH INTO TREASURE It’s true what people say. Recovery from a disaster can take decades. Haiti is one example. Six years on from their devastating earthquake, in January 2010, the country continues to battle to find full recovery. More than half the population lives below the poverty line and jobs are scarce. Yet fair trade is having an impact. Creative Haitian artisans have found
a way to take used metal drums and recycle them into beautiful works of art. For many of the artisans with fair trade organisation, Comite Artisanal Haitien, the money they earn making these crafts is their sole income. FROM THE NATIONS TO HONG KONG Fair Taste’s products are a trip around the world in one little package, ending right here in Hong Kong! Take their cashew nut brittle: it’s cane sugar from Paraguay and cashew nuts from India, both with fair trade premiums helping invest back into the communities of producers. Food processing and packaging is then done in Hong Kong by women from low-income backgrounds working with Hong Kong social enterprise Ground Works. Fair Taste’s coffee tells a similar story. Beans from Ethiopia, Indonesia and Nicaragua, from farmers paid fairly, are brought to Hong Kong and roasted locally. It’s this coffee that we have been selling through Global Handicrafts since we opened in 2005, and we’re still selling it today! We love our friendship with Fair Taste, who were the first fair trade brand in Hong Kong. As well as coffee, we’ve sold their own branded tea, cashew brittle and dried fruit and nuts, and they’re our supplier for some of our other hugely popular fair trade foods like the delectable Divine chocolate and Geobar snacks. It’s a story of a decade-long friendship investing in lives around the world, and on our doorstep in Hong Kong - one which we’re proud to be part of.
Our products are supporting communities in 24 countries around the world. 19

BETHLEHEM UNEMPLOYMENT: LITTLE LIKE A CHRISTMAS CARD For many in the west, the very word ‘Bethlehem’ brings images of a silent, holy night where all is calm and bright. When we entered the war torn area, however, listening to the crack of gunshot and the rumble of explosions, we found it was a world away from a Christmas card. This Bethlehem was a place of pain. We shared a meal with one family who told us, “We are grateful if, every night, all four of our teenage sons come home alive to sit around our table.”
They suggested the age-old craft for which Bethlehem is famous: woodwork. “Tourists used to come and buy olive wood products, but the fighting now keeps them away.” If our fair trade marketplace, Global Handicrafts, could sell their product, we would help generate income. The good news was, too, that woodwork could be flown out of Bethlehem, even if the conflict saw the roads closed. That visit happened in 2004. That year, we began sending fair trade Christmas cards for the first time, and, for our first, incorporated carvings from these craftsmen. We have been selling wood products, large and small, ever since, seeking to see a decent wage returned for
decent work to people battling chronic unrest in the Middle East. As well as seeing an increase in the quantity of product moved, though, we have seen the quality of working conditions improved too. Carpenters in Bethlehem have struggled for decades with respiratory conditions that have caused chronic illness, cancer and death. Fair trade cooperatives in Bethlehem have recently used some of their collective profit to introduce new equipment which literally sucks the sawdust from the air. They now have a safer workplace than ever before. The carpenters have a better life. Their wives and mothers are happy too, knowing their family members will not be consigned to a life of sickness in order to gain employment. It is our goal, in Crossroads, to invest for life. Our partnership with the Bethlehem craftsmen is one example of many we celebrate in this our anniversary year.
t
Not only were the local people’s lives at stake. Their double challenge was that, even if they managed to survive the fighting, there was almost no chance of a job. 70% of the people had no employment.
“So how can Crossroads help?” we asked. We had sewing machines in our Hong Kong warehouse and knew the local people had tailoring skills. Could we equip them so they could make clothing to export globally, as once they had? No, they said. The uncertainties of war meant that they had no reliable way of getting their goods to the port if soldiers cut them off at road blocks.

limited financial resources and big problems. They faced disasters, yes, but also needed money to deal with chronic illness, resulting from poor sewerage, and with malnutrition. Which was to have priority?
The little Cebu town of San Francisco, though, fared astonishingly well. Its then vice-mayor, Alfredo Arquillano, anticipated that climate change could see disasters happen more often and with greater intensity. Mayor Al, as his people fondly call him, took action to reduce the risk his community could face.
Mayor Al set up a community group to determine them. They brought in fertilizers to increase their crops. They undertook a massive cleanup campaign to deal with the sanitation problem. Once that progress was made, they moved on to addressing disaster risk.
It wasn’t altogether easy. His community, like many that are disaster prone, had

stockpiled food and other resources for emergencies. They had no money to build a sea wall for protection, but chose Nature’s own solution: mangroves. These plants can absorb water surges by up to 90%. The people set a goal of planting two million in two years. All these measures are those recommended for Disaster Risk Reduction. Crossroads to create a Disaster X-perience. Its director, David Begbie, visited Mayor Al and said, later, “Our challenge, as human beings, is that we have an optimism bias. We know disasters happen, but believe they will happen to someone else. “The simulation helps us face the fact it could happen to you or me and asks whether we are doing enough, as Mayor Al did, to make lives and livelihoods secure?”

NEPAL EARTHQUAKE
RESPONDING TO NEPAL’S EARTHQUAKE “In natural crises, human beings forget for a while…their prejudices. For a little while neighbours help neighbours and strangers help strangers.” Those words, from the inspirational, late Maya Angelou, described exactly how the world responded to Nepal’s harrowing experience in April, 2015. Crossroads did too, locally and internationally. Through Global Distribution, we rushed aid via plane two to three times per week over the period immediately following the earthquake, after which we shipped further supplies. Through Global Hand, we arranged ‘matches’ between donors in all parts of the world and partners inside Nepal and provided consultancy support, daily, for donors over the following three months. We provided 3 tons of emergency recovery kits, 600 tents, 2000 sleeping mats, 1.5 tons of bedding and linen, 3 tons of clothing, thousands of face masks and gloves for those sorting through rubble, hundreds of cooking utensils and thousands of water purification tablets. We were also donated funds by Hong Kong people with which we were able to provide 36,000 meals (lentils, noodles, oil, salt), provide temporary shelters, pay for housing reconstruction, transport solar lamps, and provide large tents for use as food distribution and reconstruction co-ordination centres.

FIJI: PAIN BEHIND THE PARADISE
Life in Fiji isn’t, sadly, the postcard we imagine. Behind its picture perfect beaches and five star resorts, much of Fiji’s rural population lives in surprising poverty and struggles to meet the basic needs of their families. Village life looks idyllic, with its crops and swaying palm trees, but it’s far from that if the younger generation is unable to learn, thrive and stay in school. For some years, Hong Kong school, International Christian School (ICS), has been working with a Fijian community school, where ageing buildings and lack of resources have placed the children at a constant disadvantage. Only one school building has electricity, there are very few books, or
basic supplies such as chalk and they don’t have enough school furniture to cater for all their students. “Half of the classes are held on the floor,” ICS told us. School teams have regularly visited Fiji to help renovate and refurbish the facilities, but they asked us for help with needed equipment and supplies. After we had prepared it, ICS teachers themselves came to Crossroads and happily loaded the shipment. Even their enthusiasm, though, is out-matched, they say, by that of the Fijians themselves. “Despite everything, these are the happiest people you

So many of our African partners write to us about village schools where children meet for class under a tree and write with sticks in the dust for lack of proper stationery. So when a UK office stationery supplier had five pallets of exercise books to give away, we knew the gift would be valuable! Global Hand connected
the company with the African NGO SuhoG, a dynamic group that runs programmes for Africa’s rural poor. They quickly came back to us with photos of beaming kids who received them in Kenya and Nigeria. “Thank you for the difference this made”, they wrote. “They came in their hundreds for the books!”

Would your school like to sponsor a shipment? Email us and we’ll happily explore options!

HONG KONG STUDENT ORGANISES DONATION TO THE PHILIPPINES Joyce Fung, from Hong Kong school German Swiss International School (GSIS), is a student fired up to change the world! “I’m always looking for ways to give back to the community,” she says. After the devastating Typhoon Haiyan left so many homeless in the Philippines, Joyce wanted to encourage business to use their resources
to help. She had found a company in the Philippines ready and willing to donate goods but she wasn’t sure how to take the next step, so she emailed Crossroads for advice. We helped Joyce post the donation on our Global Hand website, and within a day, there were two NGOs in the Philippines who responded saying they would
love to claim the goods! After hearing the response, the textiles company decided to donate even more, so that both NGOs could enjoy the same level of donation. Joyce was so encouraged that she immediately looked for even more ways to give! She convinced her school, which has recently changed to a

CHANGING FUTURES IN ROMANIA Many of us remember the Romania of the 90’s: where photos of orphans haunted us as they sat in heartbreaking need behind the bars of their cots. The depth of their plight reflected even deeper need across the country. Poverty, unemployment, weak medical facilities, educational need and the list went on. So when, in 1999, Crossroads received a request to help change the future of this aching country, we were eager to respond. A new university was opening to bring high level skill sets for a range of professions: its goal being to equip leadership that could assist in guiding the nation forward. The importance of their work came home to us when we visited the university’s president. Three times during our discussion, he received a phone call from the country’s Prime Minister and, the following week, he was to spend several days with him. We asked why, somewhat open mouthed at the level of interaction between them. The answer confirmed the value of this new project. The Prime Minister himself wanted to see their country move in a different direction, after its years of hardship and suffering, and he wanted to discuss ways that the graduates from this new initiative could help make that happen. The university building was constructed with donated money and was, in part, furnished.
Many student dormitories, however, needed bunk beds, tables, chairs, lamps and curtains and the cost was prohibitive. Computers, office equipment, crèche care and a host other needs were on the list too. Without that provision, many would not be able to attend the new university year when it opened. Just at that moment, Hong Kong’s new airport, Chek Lap Kok, was finished and we had a call to say that the construction workers’ facilities were no longer needed. Could we use bunk beds, linen and more? They received an enthusiastic yes. At the same time, Hong Kong’s YMCA was upgrading its facilities. They rang too. Could we use their bed covers, lamps, bedside tables and curtains? They received a second, resounding yes. We were also able to send office equipment, computers, childcare provision and lecture room furniture. The university was able to enrol their full quota of students. All were young people coming from regions of need, sharing a single vision: to enable others to have a better life than their parents. In 2015, 16 years after that shipment, a Crossroads staff member visited Romania. “90-95% of what you sent us is still in use,” he was told. “It has served thousands of students since you sent it.” It is our goal, in Crossroads, to invest for life. Our partnership with this Romanian university is one example of many we celebrate in this our anniversary year.

Crossroads Annual Report 2014 - 2015
HELPING AFTER TYPHOON DAMAGE Hong Kong’s poor are the hardest hit during typhoon season, especially those living in villages. When this elderly man’s house was damaged in a typhoon, his Social Welfare case worker sent him to Crossroads to replace his lost furniture. We love doing our part to empower those in Hong Kong with goods needed to help them re-start after a major set back in life.
ANGELS ON BICYCLES DELIVER WINTER GOODS

The elderly can feel almost forgotten when living alone in remote villages of Tin Shui Wai. Life is all the more bitter when the weather turns cold and many elderly can’t afford new appliances or warm winter goods. The Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong sent 100 volunteers on bicycles into these far-flung villages in the autumn of 2014, to visit and encourage elderly folk. Crossroads helped by supplying them with blankets and heaters.

MR TSE AND HIS TV Mr Tse’s* bright face was beaming underneath the wrinkles he wore so well. We had just given this dear elderly man a brand new flat screen television as well as a rice cooker and other kitchen essentials. His delight in these small items underlined what life is like for Mr Tse. Elderly, retired and without family, he has very little income to purchase his food and household needs. A beautiful large TV, to stay connected with the world around him, and a rice cooker, to prepare his own meals, meant so very much. As people live longer in Hong Kong, as with the rest of the world, some fall below the poverty line. We are only too happy to be serving Hong Kong’s elderly like Mr Tse, who come through our gates each month referred by Social Welfare Department case workers, seeking things they need to make life easier.

LANE CRAWFORD KNITS FOR THE ELDERLY It’s no secret that Lane Crawford staff know a thing or two about fashion. So when they held a companywide knitting campaign to help people in need, the staff’s creations were nothing short of spectacular! For the recipients, though, many elderly and impoverished, it was a serious gift. Staff knitted more than 500 blankets, most given to Crossroads to distribute through local partners who support people in need. In Hong Kong’s chilly winters, with electric heating beyond the budget of many of the city’s elderly poor, a warm blanket can be life-giving.

TODAY’S DOUBLE T
Poverty and the environment are, of course, huge global issues. And they are not unrelated. More than 1 person in 7 lives on less than US$1 per day. More than 6 in 10 live on less than US$5. So two thirds of the world’s people battle poverty. The double tragedy is that they are usually the very people who live in the worst quality environments. They are impacted in ways we too easily miss. •
Their health is affected by toxins and pollutants while, often, they have least access to appropriate medical antidotes.
•
Their incomes are affected because they can no longer rely on natural resources for their livelihoods.
•
Their very lives are affected as environmental damage places them at increased risk from natural disasters.
•
Their locations are affected as these challenges force them to become ‘environmental refugees’, seeking ways to start life over.
As the United Nations puts it: “The links between poverty reduction and environmental sustainability are fundamentally important for the well-being of current and future generations.” UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Initiative, 2015. The environment therefore matters greatly to us and to those we serve. Because of this, we want to play our part in reducing the impact that our organisation makes on a hurting planet and its hurting people.

CROSSROADS UMBRELLAS MADE FROM RECYCLED PLASTIC
Made from recycled plastic bottles, these bright red umbrellas don’t just save you from a soaking, they save that little bit more waste from ending up in landfill. The umbrellas made a splash in mid-2015 when they landed in our Global Handicrafts shop for HK$100 each, featuring our logo and the words so close to our heart: “Connecting people in a world of need.”
RECYCLED FISH SACKS HELP CAMBODIA’S DISABLED Re-cycling can have surprising benefit in supporting communities in need. Even though Cambodia’s horrific civil war ended decades ago, people were still being injured and killed by landmines as recently as 2013, many of them children. Cambodia is now in the unenviable position of holding one of the highest amputee rates in the world. As communities seek solutions, eco-friendly bags, and purses made
from upcycled fish feed sacks, tell a story of hope, sustainability and survival. These upcycled bags are made by artisans with disabilities who are being trained in sewing and handicraft skills. The bags are not just an ingenious re-use of materials. They’re a way for people who otherwise struggle to find an income, allowing them to be self-sufficient and to support their families.

ENVIRONMENT TOXIC WASTE. TOXIC OUTCOME. They call them “electronic graveyards”: vast dumping grounds in west-Africa, where millions of tonnes of discarded computers and appliances from the rest of the world are sent to find a final, toxic resting place. It often costs less to dump the goods overseas than recycle them properly. Items such as broken televisions, computers and keyboards are shipped to Ghana and other nearby nations, where people in poverty sift through them for parts to sell. It’s poisonous not only to local waterways and soil, but also to the people who are trying to make a living from dealing with the electronic waste, and those in the neighbourhood affected by toxic fumes from burn-off. We’re acutely aware at Crossroads that when the planet suffers, its people suffer too, and it’s the poor who are left the most vulnerable to environmental change. Each year, we’re donated thousands of electronic and electrical goods, which we gratefully redistribute to people in need. Sometimes, though, donated appliances and computers are broken or missing parts and need to be disposed of. When that happens, we want to manage the disposal process in a way that causes the least harm to the environment. Enter St James Settlement and their WEEE Go Green
project. For more than seven years we have partnered on the project, which offers a neat solution to the problem of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Hong Kong. Their workshop in Tuen Mun takes discarded WEEE from around the city and then trains and employs disadvantaged people from the community to process the goods. Whatever can be fixed is repaired and donated to the elderly and other needy groups and whatever can’t be fixed is stripped and recycled efficiently. Crossroads’ partnership on the project has been an investment not only in the lives of those employed, who have been given new skills and opportunities, but in the health of our planet and the people who suffer because of environmental damage. Over the course of our partnership, Crossroads has given WEEE Go Green a hefty 38,443 kg of electronic and electrical waste. Some of those items were even repaired and given back to Crossroads, so that we could give them away to our clients in need. On other occasions, the workshop has sourced equipment for our own operations, like a chest freezer that our kitchen staff needed to store food for daily volunteer catering. They also supply us with new rice cookers for local clients who need them, from a stockpile of 30,000 donated to them - an incredible and valuable gift! In a city that generates 70,000 tonnes in WEEE each year, it is a privilege to partner with groups like St James Settlement who care enough about our environment and our people to make Hong Kong a safer place for both. It is our goal, in Crossroads, to invest for life. Our environmental partnership with St James is one example of many we celebrate in this our anniversary year.

GENDER EQUALITY
CAMBODIA: FROM SLAVERY TO SAFETY “These children will never have had a present all of their own without any sexual favours being demanded of them.” The young Cambodian girls in the photo above have a dark reason for hiding their faces. Each was once sold into prostitution and has escaped or been rescued from slavery. Over recent years, Crossroads has
sent goods to this sparsely resourced centre, to assist their dedicated team as they seek to rescue, love, support, rehabilitate and train the girls for a brand new life.
we’d been given by Li & Fung. “It broke my heart to see how very, very happy and excited they were to receive a seal,” wrote our partner there.
Some of our provision has been classroom equipment to help the girls gain the skills they need for safe employment in the future. This year, we took further provision but added a little extra touch which surprised us in its impact. As a simple gift of love, we included some plush baby seal toys, part of a mammoth donation
“Some of them carried their seal around with them for the rest of the day, eating their meals with their seal on their lap, dancing and holding their seal....” We sent a further 3,000 seals for distribution among other young ones who have had an embattled life in Cambodia.
CROSSROADS AND GENDER EQUALITY IN THE WORKPLACE Crossroads is proud to be an inclusive work environment, where both men and women have equal opportunities for advancement. Working parents have flexibility in their work schedule and onsite childcare or schooling is offered for the children of full-time staff.

GENDER EQUALITY FREESET: A SEVEN YEAR INVESTMENT IN FREEDOM “More than 10,000 women stand in line, daily, to sell their bodies,” says NGO Freeset in Kolkata’s largest and most infamous sex district, Sonagacchi. “Poverty has left them without options. The cries of their hungry children drive them to sell their bodies.” “My mother hated her life as a sex worker, but she did it for us,” concurs Debi*, one of those benefitting from Freeset. As a young girl, Debi struggled to study because of the constant stream of men coming into the home, customers for her mother’s services. It was even worse when Debi grew older. “Many customers then wanted me,” she recounts. “That’s when I thought, if I could just grow up and get married, I could get away from this.” She found an option to prostitution through Freeset, a fair trade textiles enterprise. Debi had a job she could do with dignity and an appropriate salary. She was slowly able to save money and, in time, get married and move out of home. She even had enough to help support her mother. Today, Freeset employs more than 190 women making bags, t-shsirts, bangles and more. Many come from the sex industry. Others come from a background that placed them at risk, as Debi’s did. We have been ordering Freeset products since 2009, selling their funky jute tote bags and, later, the custom designed t-shirts. In 2012, we added our new red Crossroads t-shirts to the order: those worn by our staff and sold in our Marketplace. In 2014, Freeset produced our beautiful annual Christmas cards, which included pieces of recycled sari. Their products are among our most popular. It can be hard to bring such people to a slum area, but, through simulation, we can bring a brief ‘x-perience’ of poverty to them. That’s why we took the ‘Struggle for

Our Global X-perience team ran the x-perience for Davos participants and it was, as always, an amazing, fruitful time with many corporate and political leaders taking part. “It is more than a simulation. NICARAGUA A UK dental clinic offered high quality equipment worth 6,000 GBP through Global Hand, including a dental chair, x-ray machine and steriliser. We helped them partner with Bluefields Hospital in Nicaragua, the second poorest nation in Central America, where they offer the only dental surgery with free care in the area, a region of 165,000 people.

WORK GETS REAL AT CROSSROADS AIDS X
Crossroads Annual Report 2014 - 2015
We just can’t get away from the age-old truth. Head knowledge is one thing, but when you go through something yourself, it makes a huge difference, even if your ‘experience’ is only simulated. The pharmaceutical company, Gilead, provides HIV medication for approx 7 million people world wide, often, very generously, at low cost. When their staff took part in our Aids X-perience, though, it brought new perspective. “This makes me even more proud of my work,” said Sherry, of Gilead, and “makes it only clearer that it’s very important to improve HIV/ Aids medicines to save the lives of even more people.”
NEW LIFE DIM SUM MAGNETS
The word for Hong Kong’s favourite food - dim sum - in Cantonese, means ‘touch the heart’. These tiny handmade dim sum magnets carry that message in more ways than one! They’re made in Hong Kong by people recovering from mental illnesses working with New Life Psychiatric
Rehabilitation. In a safe space, they can learn skills, find therapy and make connections with others. For many who are overwhelmed by their illness and troubled in heart, it’s a healing place indeed. The magnets are available in our Global Handicrafts shop for HK$25.
STARTING OVER “He who has health, has hope.” - Thomas Carlyle
Mr M lost his hand in a car accident almost ten years ago, and it’s been a battle to find work ever since. He lived with friends and with family while recovering, but longed to be independent once more. He was allocated an apartment through Social Welfare and when they referred him to Crossroads for help furnishing the space with essential furniture and household items, we were only too glad to help.

Long term investment in HEALTH
HEALTH AND HOPE IN LONELY LESOTHO In the 1970’s, Leribe, in Lesotho, was the setting for an imperfect storm.
Its mountainous land yielded poor soil for farming and left communities isolated, with people malnourished and hungry. Lesotho’s men left in droves to work in South Africa to support their families. Many brought back a deadly souvenir: HIV, which took hold in Lesotho. Today, the nation boasts the third highest rate of HIV in the world. In turn, that’s left 1 in 3 children orphaned, it’s contributed to a life expectancy of 48.7 years and half the nation living below the poverty line. The problems that besieged Lesotho went largely unnoticed by the rest of the world. “Most of the time we feel we are in this battle alone and we feel like giving up…” said Crossroads’ partner in Leribe, Rohini Knight, who runs a hospital there. She was not born in Lesotho. She and her husband, both doctors, came originally from Sri Lanka. When they saw Leribe, though, they
48
decided that they had to help, even if it took their entire life’s work. That was 27 years ago and it has, in fact, taken their life’s work. She and her husband laboured for decades until his recent death. Rohini and their team have continued the work. When the doctors first moved into Leribe, it was beset with problems typifying rural Lesotho: inadequate schooling, poor roads leading to isolation, no medical service, an imbalanced diet and no running water. Many of the men had left the area to work in South African mines, leaving their wives lonely and with little to fill their days. The Knights began with a preschool. They trained local women in teaching skills, opened the first preschool in the area, giving the women income and purpose as well as the children foundational education. That led to a primary school, and, then, a hospital. The flourishing services grew, along with the local population, who were drawn to the excellent school and medical services. Their efforts were wholistic. Better roads were built, and running water installed. Crossroads met the Knights just over a decade ago, when they came to Hong Kong and shared their vision. We began
by investing in the hospital, sending beds, hospital furniture and tiles suitable for sterilised flooring. We also sent quality medical equipment donated by Hong Kong hospitals, including video gastroscopes, surgical equipment, hospital beds and an ultrasound machine. Since then, we have shipped twice more to their work, helping equip their school classrooms and a conference centre and sending further support for the hospital. Since we shipped, so long ago, we know that the goods from Hong Kong have served thousands of people in medical need in Leribe. They have supported the gamut of care: from HIV complications to ectopic pregnancies, from surgeries required to disease, from dietary problems to stress-related illness, and from maternal care to the delivery of many, many healthy babies. Crossroads is not in a place to invest financial capital, but we can make a capital investment of goods that are, quite literally, the gift that keeps on giving. It is our goal, in Crossroads, to invest for life. Our partnership in Lesotho is one example of many we celebrate in this our anniversary year.

YOUNG PEOPLE & BABIES IN NEED For almost three decades, Mother’s Choice has played a special role in Hong Kong, helping 51,000 single girls, caring for 3,600 babies and assisting with 1,400 successful adoption cases.

We have partnered with Mother’s Choice since our earliest days. This year, for example, we gave computers for their administrative needs. They wrote: “Your gift enables us to raise the bar in providing top-
quality care... Thank you to Crossroads for helping us to strengthen our infrastructure so that we can better serve babies, special needs children, and young girls in Hong Kong.”

DRUG REHABILITATION Hong Kong NGO, St Stephen’s Society, takes people through a two stage process as they recover from addiction. First, they guide them through the immediate, painful process of withdrawal and stabilisation. Then they place them in apartments across Hong Kong in order to
help them become rehabilitated and ready for a return to society. Since inception, they have opened approx. 270 apartments, “most of which you helped furnish,” they tell us. It delights us to see that investment into homes like these, over a couple of decades, can help thousands start life over.

SOCIAL WELFARE
/ HONG KONG SOCIAL WELFARE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Day by day, week by week, year by year, we receive requests to help individuals and families from many of Hong Kong’s Social Welfare Department entities. (List on following pages.) Each has his or her own story. One may have been abandoned by a partner. Another may be a single parent. A family may be the wrong side of the economic line. An elderly person may be lacking support from relatives. An ill person may be battling long term sickness which has disqualified him or her
for work... All have their own reason for coming. All need some of life’s essentials. Our Hong Kong Distribution office averages twenty appointments per day, helping each select from our stock in ways that we hope can be life-giving or even lifechanging. As well as locally born Hong Kong people, we help those coming here from Mainland China who may find the adjustment difficult. We also assist those who have become residents of Hong
Kong having come here from other countries. This Annual Report features such stories throughout. You will find a few more on these pages, together with a list below, charting the main groups we focus on. Special request: The most popular items requested by Hong Kong residents are white goods and small furniture. If you are in a position to donate either, please let us know. They will be passed on in a day or less, so great is the demand!

Crossroads Annual Report 2014 - 2015
ALLEVIATING POVERTY: ONE FAMILY AT A TIME ‘HALF-WAY HOUSE’ FOR THE HOMELESS mma Hong Kong continues to battle the dile an at g livin c of people struggling for basi affordable price. new As some await the provision of their to tide e homes, some need a half-way hom three or them over for months or even two years. way Crossroads furniture equipped this half r cove house helping provide comfortable into n for those awaiting their final transitio public housing apartments.
“Because we had no home, we could not cook food. We just found scraps to eat. Now that we have public housing, we have a place to cook but nothing to cook with. As a Chinese family, we eat a lot of rice so this rice cooker is very helpful.” A rice cooker is at the top of the wishlist for almost all our Hong Kong clients referred to us for help. It’s a kitchen essential for so many in our city, but the cost can put it out
of reach for many. We’re grateful then, for a partnership with St James Settlement, who themselves received a large quantity of new rice cookers, and have been able to supply us with a regular quantity to distribute to Hong Kong individuals and families in need.
SEVEN QUIET HEROES: ‘PAYING IT FORWARD’
Sometimes, it is those with least who best help others. Seven women from the Sha Tin area were among thousands who came to our warehouse, this year, to receive goods for their daily needs. We were glad to provide them with computers, rice cookers, microwaves, electrical appliances towels and clothes. They received our goods with delight, but the
story did not stop there. Although all these women battle economic need, they do not give way to self-pity. They banded together and resolved to use their scant resources to help others less fortunate even than they. In particular, they resolved to give regular support to a group of local blind people. They literally live the maxim: ‘Pay it forward’. Seven quiet heroes provide a humbling example.

Crossroads Annual Report 2014 - 2015 NOTES note 1: Crossroads’ Global Handicrafts promotes the principles of Fair Trade and operates on a fair trade basis, with a Handicrafts shop (both online and at Crossroads Village) and our Silk Road Cafe. These two entities operate at a surplus, contributing revenue to the balance of the work. note 2: Donations revenue includes designated contributions and non designated general donations, all being sourced from corporations, trusts, foundations and private individuals. (See Table included on page 63.) note 3: ‘Volunteer Support’ costs are generated by all divisions and includes the costs of accommodation and food for the fulltime team as well as catering for the community volunteers. Total costs during 2014 amounted to 6,085 million, against which the volunteers personally raised HK$2.8 million. note 4: The value of the goods distributed both locally in HK and internationally during 2014, was HK$71 million. The multiple of Global Distribution costs and allocated overhead to the value of goods distributed is 9. Thus for each dollar of cost expended, an average of $9 in goods value can be delivered, even to a remote international location requiring ongoing inland transport. For the more accessible locations, each dollar expended clearly can result in much higher proportionate shipment values, well in excess to the average 9.

These two entities more than cover their costs and contribute to Crossroads’ overall operations. note 2: ‘Donations Revenue’ includes designated contributions to support elements of Global Distribution and special projects and non-designated general donations to fund programmes and day to day operations. These donations are received from corporations, trusts, foundations and private individuals. note 3: ‘Volunteer Cost’ expense item includes provision of accommodation and hospitality services, plus catering and other provision for full time and community volunteers. Against this cost is the income item ‘Volunteer Support’ which records donations raised by volunteers personally to support their involvement at Crossroads. This income amounted to HK$2.4M in 2015, 46% of volunteer support costs. note 4: Crossroads shipped goods to the value of HK$76 million during 2015. This sum is based on estimated wholesale value of the goods shipped plus an allocation local storage and processing costs. Also included are local freight and handling costs, together with international freight, foreign destination clearing, inland trucking and any foreign storage and processing charges incurred. The total shipment value includes both the value of goods distributed to the local Hong Kong community and those distributed to recipients globally. The multiple of 9 is calculated with reference to Global Distribution direct costs plus an allocation of overhead costs. note 5:

Because of the need to return a portion of the current site to the government during the first quarter of 2016, extraordinary levels of funding would be required for capital works. Additional fundraising efforts were commenced and additional organisational planning and management resources were engaged. Predominantly, these requirements led to the increase in the departmental expenses in 2015 as compared to 2014. note 6:

Crossroads Annual Report 2014 - 2015
CROSSROADS FOUNDATON Connecting people in a world of need
As our name suggests, we are a crossroads: connecting people in need with those who can help. We offer four global services. Can any be of help to you? DONATE GOODS
Would you like to donate goods for people in need?
FIND PARTNERS/PROJECTS
Ask about projects or partnerships opportunities for NGOS and companies. We help ‘match-make’ in Hong Kong and around the world.
DONATE FUNDS
Even a small donation can help change lives.
DONATE TIME & TALENT
Your time, talents, and skills can provide vital help, especially when given regularly by individuals or teams.
BOOK AN X-PERIENCE
Deepen your understanding by taking a few steps ‘in the shoes’ of people facing poverty, HIV/AIDS, blindness, war and more. Book as an individual or group for a team build.
SHOP ‘N SNACK REQUEST GOODS
If you need goods from our warehouse, we’d love you to ask. We can distribute through registered organisations, in Hong Kong and around the world.
