It’s a stereotype of the Brits, that we’re always talking about the weather, but today I won’t apologise, because London is looking glorious. The city is basking in early spring sunshine, after a cold and depressing lockdown. We’re not done with that just yet, but there’s an optimism that sexier days are ahead. Another apology I won’t be making is for this issue of Crotch. As with every edition, we seek to support and celebrate men from around the world who want to express their sexuality unapologetically. We seek out confident men who find joy in shooting with us. They are many types of men, from porn stars, nightlife performers, to the everyday guy, and the boy next door who happens to play the harp (yes, really). What they have in common is this: they are always in control of what you see. You won’t find someone nervously flashing his ass because someone told him it would be good for his profile. That, my friends, is just not sexy. As hot as they are, photographs can only do so much; we look forward to a time when we can all get up-close and personal with each other once again. In anticipation of that, we look back in this issue with a selection of work from Stuart Linden Rhodes who, as Linden Archives, photographed early nineties northern clubs for the gay press. Maybe we will need Stuart to pick up his camera again. They say that, post pandemic, the roaring twenties comes next. One sure sign of that? Sales of trunks are booming. So lets heat things up and grab a handful of Crotch, here’s to a summer of parties. I promise I won’t go on about the weather, if I see you out there.
Frank

Stitch me up Knitwear designer Louis Dorantes on their underwear label Leak Your Sextape I grew up in a culture where expressing forms of sexuality
is
taboo.
I’m
Guatemalan-born,

outside of Detroit, and I was shocked and inspired by the openness towards sex and desire when I moved to New York for school. The parties, the sex, the grand personalities and the club fashion of Brooklyn compelled me to create the slutgear I always wanted. POC-organized parties inspired the first pieces. Bubble Tea and Papi Juice, events that celebrated people of colour and our queer fashion were life changing for me personally and for my craft. Friends in college turned me on to knitwear design. Before long I was making pieces for my friends; then the hobby became an obsession.
Someone got married in a piece I created. They loved it that much. I unintentionally made wedding attire, which made me smile. @LeakYourSexTape @TorianLewin @PetarDarkholme
Kim Kardashian influences me. She’s been able to harness her sexuality to achieve whatever she wants in life. Using sex, not as a weapon, but a vehicle for empowerment is beautiful to me. Outside the box Odd Kiosk sees the queering of a Barcelona icon Many have dreamed of turning their passion for print into
a

reality.
Barcelona-based
graphic designer Iván Jiménez and architect Txema Montero have gone one better, combining the desire for all things pulp with the reimagining of an iconic slice of the Catalonian capital’s architecture. Odd Kiosk is their street-level enterprise, an on-thestreet shop selling art, magazines, newspapers, drinks, and snacks. Barcelona’s kiosks have seen better days, with over eighty shuttered in recent years. Ivan and Txema teamed the idea of reopening a neighbourhood kiosk with bringing art and culture to the locals. ‘Art has to take to the streets,’ they say. ‘Art is culture and culture must be lived.’ The business is also about creating space. Come here for a national newspaper or magazine, Barcelona indies, a selection of zines from around the globe, and work from LGBTQ+ artists. Odd Kiosk is a queer kiosk, its creator says, a fact reflected in look and outlook. Of the design decisions they say: ‘We wanted something fluid and organic, something different and non-normative that would represent odd or rare and that would convey that being different is cool and that you have to change, as we all change.’ How, then, does Odd Kiosk sit with the local community? ‘The people of the neighborhood are delighted,’ they report. ‘They are super grateful to have the neighborhood kiosk, that had been closed for a year, open again. They support us and give us lot of affection. It has been such a beautiful surprise.’ @OddKiosk OddKiosk.com @CesarseGarra_ Photography César Segarra

Quite the draw Robert Escalera’s erotic illustrations embrace all the colours in the paintbox
Crotch 23
Robert Escalera is a man after our own heart. ‘I embrace every colour in my box,’ the New York-born, Paris-based designer and illustrator enthuses. ‘I do like red and sky-blue together, but the subject usually inspires me to choose colours. Whatever I’m working on dictates the medium I use.’ You may, however, think of colour second when you see Robert’s erotic pencil drawings of men, which started out as a personal project. The results, he admits, are rather thrilling. ‘I love getting messy with inks and dyes. Lately I love my new fat crayons – they feel so good in my hand. Coloured pencils are great for me because I’m very heavy handed and deliberate; the results are quite intense.’ Robert finds his subjects online and in person. It means he doesn’t have a fantasy list of men he’d like to draw. ‘That’s a beautiful thing about drawing, I don’t have to fantasize about drawing anyone, I just draw them,’ he says. ‘I fantasize about other things.’ @Roberte64 WORM vintage photograph

Going going gone 3 favourites from the L.A. bar scene on a year without dancing
In a global pandemic, when their regular streams of income get shut down completely, L.A.’s go-go boys get busy… baking bread. ‘I started an OnlyFans where I knead and bake bread in my underwear and somehow this is paying my rent and the bills,’ says bartender and dancer, Patrick Mill. ‘There is truly a market for anything nowadays.’ This is not to suggest the shuttering of L.A.’s nightlife didn’t take a serious toll on its workers. Joshua Flores, a fellow go-go boy, had been hoping to expand his ‘Jock’ night at Fubar last year. ‘I felt 2020 was going to be a breakout year,’ he reports, ‘but it soon became a year of scrambling to make ends meet.’ Even for those who didn’t solely rely on the night time economy for income, it was an important outlet gone. ‘Go-go dancing was a stress reliever from my normal career,’ says Quinton Carter, who works for a not-for-profit organisation. However, all was not lost. Quinton made manager of an interim housing shelter for the homeless population. Joshua was grateful for beach time with his boyfriend. And Patrick enjoyed the rest from being constantly social. Still, he’d like to step away from the oven sometime soon. ‘I would do anything to be shoulder to shoulder with strangers again in a club, I miss the people the most.’ Photography Ramon Christian
