Homemade with Love A community publication by the people and for the people

This summer, Crown City Magazine celebrates five years of publishing our locally inspired, monthly magazine, delivered free to every mailbox in town. Our publication serves to unite, inform and inspire the community by providing a platform for contributors to connect with our extensive audience of locals and visitors alike. We strive to uplift our community in a personal way — by celebrating our city together. Our mission has remained the same since the July 2018 inaugural issue: to celebrate Coronado, and give recognition to the people, groups and organizations who make the community great. This month’s advertisers and contributors listed on page 8, are proud to bring you the 5th Annual Surfing Issue. Each year, delving into Coronado’s surfing community presents us with a unique window into their ocean-minded lifestyle. We are stoked to publish the photographs and stories of this collective for the whole town to keep and enjoy. This is YOUR magazine, Coronado, and I invite readers to take the reins. As part of our mission to recognize our remarkable town, we invite Coronadans to submit photos, artwork, articles and story ideas. We have also piloted a guest editor initiative, which allows community members to utilize this far-reaching platform to share valuable messages. The program has been such a success and we will continue to host local organizations as co-editors. If you’re interested in being more involved with Crown City Magazine, please contact us today by emailing Hello@CrownCityPulishing.com or visiting our website, CrownCityMagazine.com. Thank you for celebrating Coronado with us! Sincerely,

urfing has been part of the Coronado beach culture for many years, inspiring a formalized group of volunteers to give youngsters an opportunity to connect and catch waves. Coronado Surf Club (CSC) began in 2018, giving youth one more reason to hit the beach. I was excited to learn more about the club as my youngest son, new to the sport, surfed all school year and reaped many positives beyond sun-streaked hair and a more buoyant body. When a chance came to promote Coronado Surf Club _ I was all fin. I recently chatted with Heidi Iverson, a dedicated parent volunteer who helped head the club, to get the 411.

after school at Stan’s Beach. Other get-togethers outside the waves were coordinated throughout the year, promoting camaraderie and philanthropy, which helped to further increase registrants to over 100 students in 2022. Benefits Everyone is aware of the physical benefits of surfing. The sport is a fabulous, full body workout, but it also has many social-emotional perks and is an awesome mindfulness activity. For more details online visit, TheWave.com/healthbenefits-of-surfing-for-body-and-mind. At CSC, regardless of the surfer level of experience, it is a place with no pressure-a welcoming spot for all. One shreds the waves improving skills as part of the team while another floats about casually waiting for the perfect one. Everyone feels part of the club even though the sport is independent. Surfers are content both in and out of the ocean, conversing about boards or water conditions in the casual setting. Youth can come and go as they please as there is no mandated time commitment. Some attend regularly, while others participate only when their busy schedules or the conditions permit. During the lock downs of last year, opportunities for students to connect were limited. After our move to Coronado in June 2021, we were looking for new ways

for my son, Emilio, to meet new friends and stay active. He had never enjoyed the water and we all loved the beach, so when we found the surf club information via Facebook, my son was excited to give it a go. He had never surfed before but was eager to start. From day one, a friendly group waited on the beach, most of whom were also new to the sport. Kristian Kocherga was a team lead and his cool spirit and surfing skills exuded confidence and gave the kids encouragement. I witnessed the overall advantages that surfing provided, helping make an easy transition to a new school and giving my son purpose and balance. Studies show having something positive to look forward to boosts mood and reduces stress. For my son, this was the sport and he reaped the benefits. He was excited about surfing and when he anticipated a surf day, the countdown began and his temperament improved. I was thrilled to see him hit the beach on a regular basis and not only gain skills, but also so much satisfaction. The year gave him increased confidence, a new community to be part of and a chance to exercise. Quiet space on the expansive ocean offered him an opportunity to enjoy the water as an independent

The ocean provides a quiet respite for youth, who ride the waves with delight and exit the water with tranquil smiles. There is a reason ocean waves are on many calming apps. Thank you, Coronado Surf Club, for the great memories, fabulous fun, and opportunities to improve overall wellness. A super shout out to the parent volunteers who made this happen! I

t hardly seems possible that it has been a year since I last wrote about surfing in Coronado. People have always had many choices of sports to enjoy while visiting here, but surfing has long been a staple for our community. We who have lived here often forget how lucky we are to reside in this small bit of heaven in southern California. Think about it: a golf course on the bay that is open nearly 365 days a year, a great skatepark, tennis courts in several locations, a great municipal pool and many parks. Oh, yes — and one of the best beaches in the country. We in Coronado love our beaches, which are enjoyed by both visitors and locals alike. For years, our locals have enjoyed surfing in Coronado. For as long as I can remember, there has been an ongoing friendly competition between Coronado surfers and Imperial

Beach surfers. Today, people from both cities and all over appear in some of our surfing events held at Coronado Shores beach area. Surfing has even become a part of the elementary, middle and high school culture here, with competitive surf teams and clubs providing structured involvement in the sport. When looking back through the history of Coronado, surfing was a sport for men, well into the mid-1960s. Few women were mentioned at that time. One exception was Margie Manock from Imperial Beach. This discovery prompted me to contact some of the women surfers whom I had known and see what they had to say about the culture of women in surfing. Margo Rhodes said her family settled here in the late 1800s with her grandmother working at the Hotel del Coronado. Her father, Herb, was a Coronado lifeguard

These photos of long-time local female surfer, MaryEllen (Mel) Wiley Rogers longboarding in Coronado was taken by former Coronado resident and avid surfer, Daron Case.

in the 1950s while going to Coronado High School and later in college. Margo started surfing at age five, always watched over by friends and family. She still surfs and said her role model was Sandra Vickers, an early female surfer in Coronado. In speaking with some of the other women surfers of this era, it was clear that some people felt the ocean belonged to the boys. And, how that has changed! One coach during that time period told some of the girls not to enter a particular competition because the boys’ egos were too fragile to accept a girl beating them. We can laugh about that now. Another woman shared with me that she felt women had to work harder and struggle to prove themselves

in the lineup, but if they did, they were accepted according to the merit of their surfing abilities. Some of that bias or bullying may have changed in town due to the positive culture in the water created with the help of Stan Searfus, who worked hard with the kids from elementary school upward. He not only taught them to surf but he encouraged them all to be stewards of the ocean and surf smart in competitions, boosting their self esteem both in and out of the water. In our own family, my granddaughter started surfing here in town at age nine, and is still surfing during college. Growing up, she was always encouraged by her father and uncles, who are also surfers. Another woman I know said she had started surfing in 7th grade here. She felt that the acceptance of women in other sports helped to elevate this climate in surfing as well. Today it is not uncommon to see a group of women donning wetsuits in the morning after dropping their children off at school, with the Shores parking lot serving as a popular entry point for the local surf break. Social media has also helped with the recognition of women in surfing. And we most certainly recognize Carissa Moore, who is the first to win a medal in surfing’s inaugural appearance in the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Thinking about these women surfing pioneers reveals another outlook on surfing in Coronado and a future for both young women and men to enjoy our waves.

Carol Pastor's granddaughter, Sydney Zoehrer, started surfing at age 9 in Coronado. Photographed before paddling out by Samantha McNall.

• Carol Pastor and her family have lived in Coronado since the mid-1970s. Mother of seven girls, many of whom still live here in the village, Carol has been involved in the community over the years with the Friends of the Library, Historic Resource Commission, and most recently writing about Coronado history for the Coronado Historical Association. An avid history buff since her college days, exploring our local history is a perfect fit.

Move over bacon; here comes Birria Story and photos by Clyde Van Arsdall

rip it and dip it! Picture a taco eaten like a French dip sandwich. The birria taco and its essential side of consomé have turned breakfast on its head.

Birria is stewed meat; it can be goat or beef. Beef (res) is all the rage at the moment. A birra de res taco starts with beef cooked low and slow. Then, tomatoes and chilies fortify the stewing liquid, intensifying the flavor and transforming it into the popular dipping liquid known as consomé. Tacos start with corn tortillas dipped in the oil that forms on top of the consomé. The dip turns the tortilla its iconic red color. Once on the griddle, the oil helps crisp the taco. Stewed beef, birria de res, is added to the tortilla along with onions and cilantro. Cheese is always an option; the good stuff from Oaxaca takes this taco to a new level of flavor and texture. Once folded, the taco continues to cook on the flat top until golden brown. This crispy taco, with or without cheese, is impressive. Dipped in consomé, it is a culinary epiphany. The consomé is so good that some birria spots serve it over instant ramen noodles. Most people drink the consomé straight from the cup after the tacos are gone. So where has this taco been my whole life? Why have I just recently discovered it?

Birria has a long, rich history in Jalisco — but not as a taco. It is very different from what we eat here locally. So what was traditional birria, and how has it evolved into this new craze? 32

Onions and cilantro finish the birria taco

Goat is the meat of choice in Jalisco, in the form of birria de chivo (goat). The dish consists of stewed goat served with a side of the cooking broth and tortillas. Birria migrated north in the early ’80s and settled in Tijuana (TJ) with many other regional delights. Goat meat was not readily available or in high demand in TJ. Soon birria de chivo (goat) became birria de res (beef). Migration and assimilation are two recurring conditions causing traditional food to morph into something the mainstream consumer can get behind. Tijuana is all about street food. Birria “the meal” ditched the plate and bowl and morphed into a taco, easy to eat on the go. A healthy splash of the cooking liquid makes the meat moist while reinforcing the deep beef flavor. A star was born. This TJ-style birria became all the rage. People were soon saying TJ birria was better than the traditional Jalisco version. Even the border couldn't keep this regional favorite from heading north. Taqueros (taco vendors) soon made their way to Los Angeles and introduced TJ-birria to a new audience in Southern California. This taco became part of the food truck culture in LA. Taqueros, always striving to set themselves apart, started tweaking the taco to gain an advantage. To this end, good Oaxacan cheese joined the mix to create a quesabirria taco. Instead of the healthy splash of cooking liquid, a side cup of consome

provided something to dunk your taco in. A dipping frenzy spread like wildfire. Food trucks use social media to post their location and promote their products. Long lines started forming at birria trucks. Quesabirria was soon hot and trending. This taco reached cult status overnight, causing Mexican restaurants all over the country to add it to their menu. Birria tacos are not typically made at home, as the stew takes longer than most want to spend on an ingredient. I love to get these tacos at a shop that specializes in birria. They can take the time needed to do it right. You can often tell a good birrieria (birria restaurant or cart) by the fact that it opens early for breakfast. True fans want these tacos bright and early in the morning, and I am one of them. There are some fantastic birrieria just a short drive away. I encourage you to try them all. These taqueros get up with the sun to serve these ethereal tacos. Dawn patrol isn't always about surfing; sometimes, it's about a taco. Grab your board or just a cup of coffee and make the pilgrimage to one of these spots; you will be glad you did. Happy dipping! It's crispy and you can dunk it, so kids love it! • Clyde Van Arsdall IV is a third-generation Coronado local, chef and storyteller. The Graphic Print: The best sellers in our shop are the bold graphic “Pray for Surf” and “No Wake Zone” prints. These art pieces are super versatile and can be used in any room of the house.

The Abstract Art: If you want an art piece that is more neutral and blends with your home decor then an abstract wave print is the way to go. These are great for living rooms and open concept spaces.

The Photograph: There is something nostalgic about a vintage surf photograph that we just love. We hang them in bedrooms or on gallery walls.

H

is work has been featured on the covers and pages of this magazine and you may have seen him in the water at North Island or on the shore at Shipwrecks capturing the surf scene. We caught up with Derek Emge to ask a few questions and learn what makes him tick. CCP: Hi Derek. Tell us a little about your photography. I have two main focuses with my photography: surf photography and what they call fine art photography. The former comes from growing up in the water and then following my son through years of surf contests and surf trips. I’m lucky enough that I still get invited along on his trips even though he is now grown up! Along the way, I realized I had a number of high quality images from in and around the ocean that people wanted for their walls and I began to expand my focus to large format prints. CCP: What type of subjects do you photograph for those prints? Much of my photography has its roots in the ocean. The colors, texture and light are forever changing in fascinating ways which helps to create mood and emotion, making the ocean my favorite subject. One of my goals is to capture in each image the particular sensation or mood I personally felt at the time the photograph was taken. It might be the quiet sense of freedom of a pelican soaring over the waves or the raw power of a crashing wave in the early morning light. I suppose living in an ocean community helps with this connection.

CCP: Do you have a favorite color? Actually I do and it’s BLUE! Some studies say that the human eye can perceive between 450 and 500 shades of blue. How crazy is that? Those of us lucky enough to live by the ocean can see multiple shades of blue on any given day and at any given moment. Something just attracts me to the color. The deeper the blue, the more serious and moody I feel. The lighter (think turquois) the more freedom and joy I feel. As a photographer, this color is the primary element in many of my images. CCP: How long have you lived on Coronado? My wife and I moved to Coronado after our second child left for college. We moved from the hectic scene of Mission Beach to the peace of the Island. We immediately fell in love with the people and the connection our city has to the ocean. There is nothing more grounding than simply walking on the beach every day! CCP: How did you get started as a photographer? I received my first camera at age 12 and immediately enjoyed trying to capture my surroundings. Of course, this was before the digital age or cell phones and a roll of film was either 24 or 36 frames and cost a couple bucks to develop. I learned pretty quickly to really focus on setting up a good image before clicking (laugh). This probably developed my eye more than any course work I ever took. I learned darkroom techniques in college and then slowly expanded my equipment over time to allow greater creativity with my imagery. Following college I went to law school and worked as a litigator for nearly three decades, but never put my camera down. I have always been a visual person and even in the courtroom connecting with a jury through visuals was the most powerful means of communication. I’m now retired from the practice of law and focused full time on photography. CCP: If you could do anything with your photography what would you do? Dream big…. That’s a great question… I guess the most satisfying part of being a photographer is creating images that people connect with and which create an emotional reaction. So, I guess if I could do anything, it would be to put a cool image in every single house in the county. Wouldn’t that be something?

ike any parent, I have been asked what I consider to be the best advice for raising well-adjusted and happy children. My go-to answer is to travel one-on-one with each child you have. This results in both wonderful moments and incredible learning opportunities. I also love to travel with my wife and as a family, but something unique happens during a one-on-one trip. I am father to two young adults, now 28 and 25, so I am able to offer my perspective from some experience. Since this month is Crown City Magazine's surf issue, I’ll share a sense of why a single surf trip is such a wonderful idea.

When my son Zack was a sophomore in high school, he came to us with the idea of combining a surf trip with a community service project. It was a pretty crafty way to score some waves over spring break! After some discussion, we greenlighted the idea. My son and two friends selected a remote surf camp that had just opened in Bocas del Toro, Panama. The location combined the promise of good surf and an indigenous school that was in need of supplies. We booked the trip and the boys started collecting school supplies for the school. Our trip tested us in ways we hadn’t anticipated. Our midnight flight from LAX had an early morning layover in San Salvador for what we thought was about two hours. But note: when traveling, be sure to check for time changes. We found ourselves running to the gate desperate to not be left behind. We barely made it before the gate closed, and were the last people to board the plane. Sweating and out of breath, I saw there were two seats available where we boarded in first class. Giving Zack a wink, we simply sat down and I told him to try his best high school Spanish to sweet-talk the flight attendant. Well, she melted at his halting Spanish and she let us stay! Lessons galore and we hadn’t even arrived in Panama. Landing in Panama, we gathered our gear and exited the airport looking for our pre-paid driver. Nowhere to be found! Well, no need to panic, we had the boys (the dads didn’t speak Spanish) haggle with several taxi drivers until they found a van big enough for the boards. With two of us turtling under the stack of boards inside the van, we watched the boys’ confidence grow as they laughed about the great “deal” they had negotiated while we drove to the domestic airport for the next leg of our trip.

Young Naso checking out the visitors.

Note 2: when traveling to Latin America, make sure you don’t travel during Carnival! In the little concrete building that comprised the terminal, we encountered about 75 people, all arguing and trying to get on one of the two, 12-seater planes to Bocas. At the counter, we were told the planes were overbooked and our prepaid reservations were no good. They could not get us on a plane for two days! Trying not to panic, we again leaned on the boys’ beginner Spanish. They gave it a great effort and were able to swing four seats. But, that left two out and splitting up didn’t seem to make sense. Just when dejection and exhaustion seemed to be closing in, we noticed a couple of small prop planes on the tarmac. After some frantic negotiation, we secured a Cessna for the other two and then wrangled up a pilot. Perhaps not the most secure scenario, but we all landed in Bocas an hour later. 50

AUGUST 2022

Riding the open ponga from Bocas out to Isla Bastimento, our surfboard bags sticking out of the bow and spray from the waves misting our faces, I could see a combination of exhilaration and exhaustion. Yes, we had made it. The boys learned some invaluable lessons in thinking on your feet, not panicking, and they realized how important those Spanish classes really were! They had solved each of the hurdles themselves rather than relying on their dads. Our roles had been unintentionally equalized; we were more peers than father/ son. The rest of the week was filled with boat rides to crazy surf spots around the islands. “Carneros” is a left point break that peeled away from the jungle background emptying after four to six turns into the turquoise of the Caribbean. “Bluffs” is a crazy shorebreak where everyone got barreled until they were exhausted and sand filled their ears (and more). Hikes through steamy jungles filled with monkeys and red dart frogs led to secret breaks peeling off hidden corners. Total surfing bliss. Between all the action, the boys grabbed the donated school supplies and used baseball mitts and paid a visit to the indigenous school. School for the children of local Naso peoples consisted of two concrete huts with no coverings on the windows. There was a spring on the Island where they got their water and a stream of waste that ran from the buildings down to the ocean.

We had been told they were in need of pens, paper and art supplies and that is exactly what the boys brought. All was greatly appreciated, and then the boys started handing out T-shirts and baseball gear. Talk about excitement! Two of the Naso boys started picking teams, just like we all used to do on playgrounds around the US, with the Americans picked first and the littlest of the kids chosen last. For the next hour, the group played a laughter filled game of baseball on the sloped ground with the waste creak running through the middle. Several of the women cooked fresh-plucked chicken and rice in a huge communal cooking pan over an open flame and a feast marked the conclusion of an incredible day. I still get goosebumps when I think about the day. Our boys felt they made just a little difference in our crazy world. Two decades have passed since this inaugural surf trip to Panama, but the lessons and emotions have never been lost. Fast forward a decade and my now 28 year old called me in early February asking if I would be the photographer on another trip to Panama (our third). My hesitation lasted only as long as it took to look up at my wife and receive a bemused smile and a nod. On our 2022 trip, Zack, now fluent, led two other newcomers both in the water and out. Nothing seems to phase the “kid,” and his smile when we round a point and see the next break is that same eager smile that he wore so often as a little grom.

A red dart frog, indigenous to Isla Bastimento

The Naso school where the children arrive by dugout

So, I suppose the best advice I can offer to a parent is to take your child, alone and without your spouse, on a solo trip. Be sure it is more than two days because something special starts to happen by the third day. Your role as “parent” and your son or daughter's role as “kid” dissolves, leaving you as just two buddies facing the world together as peers. Venture forth, learn from travel and make a lifetime of memories together! Then, take your wife to Napa!!! • Derek Emge is a professional photographer who calls Coronado home. Each judge selected to be invited to vote has a strong connection with Coronado and are mostly made up of Coronado residents, local surfers, Coronado civic group members and City of Coronado employees. Over the years, the contest voting process has become very complex to ensure a fair outcome. In short, each photo is assigned a letter and number, and are arranged in random order to lessen the chance for judges to know who took the photos. Photos are then sent to judges via email, and judges respond to the email with their votes, which are counted by the Crown City Magazine team. All photos submitted in the contest have the chance to be published in Crown City Magazine. Winners received incredible prizes from local contest sponsors, Glorietta Bay Inn, Blue Bridge Hospitality, Emerald City Surf Shop, Orange & Park and URT. Emerald C Gallery, Coronado Ukulele Club, Light & Magic Photography, Joel Ortiz Photography, were also contest sponsors this year. This contest is meant to be a fun event for the whole community, but there were enough skilled surfers and professional photographers who participated, that it had a level of seriousness and respect for the sport, as well as the art of photography. Thank you to everyone who was a part of this years’ event. We’re looking forward to going even bigger next year.

AUGUST 2022

A huge thank you to our 2022 SURF Photo Contest sponsors and participants! Emerald C Gallery was the perfect venue for our very first party where winners were announced. The Coronado Ukulele Club did a such wonderful job playing surf tunes for us at the party. We couldn't be more grateful to these two sponsors for making this such a special and unforgettable evening. Thank you, Glorietta Bay Inn, Blue Bridge Hospitality, Emerald City Surf Shop, Orange & Park and URT for donating some seriously awesome prizes. We are also grateful to Emerald C Gallery, Coronado Ukulele Club, Light and Magic Photography and Joel Ortiz Photography for sponsoring this year's event. Thanks to each of you who submitted photos, to all our judges who voted and everyone who made it to the party. The judges and attendees at the photo contest party, where all photos were on display, were so impressed with the photography - many said this year's photos were better than ever! Hope everyone had a fun time celebrating the local SURF community with us and sharing in our slight obsession with the ocean, beach life and surf culture. Have a happy, safe and blissfully endless summer!
