Nicole Coker USA National Miss South Carolina This summer, Nicole Coker of St. Matthews, South Carolina will compete for the national title of USA National Miss, as well as a $10,000 scholarship at the national pageant this July. Nicole is a senior Calhoun Honors student at Clemson University pursing a degree in Architecture. She aspires to become a world-renowned architect who focuses on the essence of strengthening community within the structures she designs and builds. She has already begun to build structures for local Charleston non-profits through the Clemson Design Build Program. The past two semesters she has been studying at the Clemson-Charleston Design Center in Charleston, South Carolina. During the Fall 2019 semester, she worked with a team of 12 that designed and built a community garden structure at Corrine Jones Community Park for the Charleston Parks Conservancy non-profit. This project is specifically special to her because she not only was a part of the designing and physical construction of the project, she also discovered she has a hidden talent of welding and welded every steel component within the design.

This semester she is working with a new team of 12 to design and build a farm stand at the Historical Enston Homes Community for the non-profit, The Green Heart Project. Throughout this process, Nicole has been able to merge her love for architecture and her passion to serve her community. In addition to working towards her architecture degree, Nicole served as a Resident Assistant for three semesters and is involved in several organizations on campus such as the FIRST Organization, Clemson Hope, and CU Smile. In her leadership role as a Resident Assistant, Nicole enjoyed working with an incredible diverse group of students to create meaningful learning experiences within Residential Living at Clemson. As a first-generation college student, she helps new students transition into college through the FIRST Organization. Through Clemson Hope, Nicole writes letters to her Paw Pals, children in Title 1 schools, to help build their reading and writing skills. And finally, she is a member of CU Smile which promotes random acts of kindness across campus. On October 6, 2019, Nicole had the honor of being crowned the new USA National Miss South Carolina 2020. Throughout her year she will be promoting her initiative Courageous Choices and the national platform Crown CARES. Courageous Choices is a program Nicole created to teach young women and children that they have the power to make a courageous decision each and every day. She founded this initiative after being in an abusive relationship for nearly six years of her life. She is currently speaking about unhealthy relationships on her YouTube series: Courageous Choices and has also created her own custom coloring books titled A-Z book of Courageous Characters to give to children during school visits. As the new USA National Miss South Carolina, she is excited to merge her initiative and the Crown CARES into a program called Crowns of Courage. Crowns of Courage is a five-week program that uses USA National Miss?five core values to teach children how to prevent bullying and how to have the courage to stand up for one another. Ultimately, she loves the USA National Miss pageant system because she gets to represent her state through a system that is rooted in the Christian faith, has incredible state and national directors, has a platform to promote anti-bullying, and she is excited to celebrate USA National Miss?10-year Anniversary with her incredible UNM family.

Sh ou ld I cr eat e m y ow n plat f or m ? Yes, but you?ll want to give it some real thought so it doesn?t seem thrown together and amateur. Start by identifying what you?re truly passionate about. Have you overcome a personal struggle that uniquely qualifies you to speak on a particular topic? Does a loved one?s experience inspire you to advocate on his or her behalf and on behalf of others facing similar situations? Do your educational or career goals align with a certain cause? It?s all about finding the right fit. Once you?ve chosen your platform topic, find out what resources are already available in your community and what is lacking. What can you do to further the cause without creating redundancy? For instance, if your platform is literacy and there are already little free libraries across your community, installing more may not be the way to go. If your neighbors have trouble finding transportation to the library or adult literacy programs, there is an opportunity there to mobilize volunteer drivers or perhaps team up with a cab or ride share service. Above all, be sincere. Judges can easily distinguish between someone who truly cares and is committed to a cause and someone who just picked something because she needed a platform to compete.
