Finding a Pageant Phot ogr apher Coach Br ittany DiCello The Finishing Touch Consulting
Which style of photo tends to perform well at the specific pageant in which I am competing? Getting the right "head shot" for your pageant can sometimes be tricky. So many things go into the creation of this photo! What should you wear? What do you want to portray? Did you choose the right photographer for your "look? "The list can go on and on. Here are the top questions I get asked about pageant head shots: How do I choose the right photographer? Research is key. Each photographer has their very own look and feels to their work. It's important that you understand how you want to be portrayed to the judges at your pageant. Next, you?ll want to find out about what it is that your specific pageant system is looking for in a photo so that you can choose your photographer accordingly. Some questions to ask yourself: Do you want a glamorous photo or something more natural? Do you want studio light or natural light? What is trendy right now?
What should you wear? I suggest wearing a top with a unique neckline. Tops that are off-the-shoulder, have a ruffle, collar or even some type of cut-outs tend to photograph well. You also want to be sure that you choose the right colors for you. Decide which type of skin tone you have, cool or warm, and choose your wardrobe colors accordingly. Accessories are a must. You should take a variety of options with you to your shoot for wardrobe and jewelry. Most photographers like to choose what you will wear based on your options. A great tool to use for wardrobe inspiration for photos is Pinterest. Which picture should I choose? The first thing I look for in a good photo is face shape. You want your photo to show the best angles of your face. The second thing I look for is the eyes. You will want to check to be sure the eyes look symmetrical and they are not squinted. An old
9
trick I?ve learned is to turn the photo upside down. This makes it much easier to just focus on the eyes. Lighting is another element of a great photo. Be sure there are no shadows on your face that could distort the way you look in the image. Finally, look for any stray hairs (which sometimes can be fixed with a little re-touch), and any other awkward things like crooked earrings or looking uncomfortable in a pose. This typically shows the most in the neck area. Most importantly, the image should look like you! Overly retouched photos can cause confusion for a judge. When you walk into your interview or onto the stage the judge should be able to match your pageant head to you Will your pageant head shot win the pageant for you? Probably not. But it can serve as a tool to help the judges remember you. Find a photographer that connects with you. Be clear on the look you?d like to achieve in your photo. Keep in mind that, over anything else, the photo should look like you. Having a great photo will help you .

Lisa Br ake Beyond the Beauty 16
L. Love others, despite our differences. I. Inspire others to be kind, to help those in need, to embrace their unique differences and be comfortable in their own skin. S. Stand up for yourself and others who are being bullied or made fun of. A. Anti-bullying pledge Lisa has received over 150 kids and adults who have committed against bullying.
L.I.S.A ANTI-BULLYING PROJECT
Lisa Brake is a 13- year old 7th grader from Senoia, Georgia. She is the reigning Miss USA National Southern States Jr. Miss. Lisa was bullied terribly in 4th grade, so much that her behavior and personality started to drastically change. She became depressed, withdrawn, and extremely moody. She was not able to interact with her little sisters. There were many tears and tantrums and she pulled her hair out. She didn?t eat lunch at school for many months because kids were laughing at her, making fun of her, and getting other kids to join in. She just put her head down at lunch. One girl spit in her face on several occasions. She felt alone and never told anyone what was happening. She became afraid to attend school. Lisa's mother witnessed the bullying during an unexpected visit to her school for lunch. By the end of April of her 4th grade year, she was taken out of public school and was home-schooled. A few months later, Lisa decided that she wanted to compete in a pageant. Pageants soon helped Lisa come out of her shell. The girl who was so withdrawn that she couldn?t look at people when they talked to her, was on stage in front of an audience. She was learning communication skills, poise, and gaining self confidence. She was making some amazing friends with similar values and felt a sense of belonging. She was helping others in need. She then decided that she wanted to develop a platform to help kids going through similar situations. She wanted to encourage kids to embrace their own uniqueness (whether it is their appearance or quirky personality), qualities, and talents. And for others to be accepting of each other ?s uniqueness. She developed the project L.I.S.A. in efforts to educate others about what bullying is, the effects of bullying, and how we can come together to stop it. With Project L.I.S.A. we can all come together to put a stop to bullying.
