Fashion/Style 101 - 2018 Proj ect Pink by Komen Central Indiana
www.komencentralindiana.org
Project Pink came from the idea of taking leftover race materials (shirts, banners, scarves, etc.) and re-purposing them into garments created by local designers. The garments are then modeled by survivors and co-survivors. The models apply on-line and are selected by a committee. They are then asked to fund raise for our organization. Local make-up and hairstylists donate their time and talent to make the models look even more lovely for the evening. Our local Kendra Scott Jewelry loans out jewelry coordinated with each model?s garment for the evening, as well.
We award a prize to the best design and another to the model who raises the most money. Celebrity judges determine the design winner. This year our judges included the following: -
Grisel Barajas PD and on-air personality with La Grande 105.1 FM Peter Dunn also known as Pete the Planner Lindsey Eaton reporter with Fox 59 Chukie Nwokorie former Indianapolis Colts & Green Bay Packers player
Along with the fashion show, our guests enjoy a DJ, games, drawings, food and drink in a beautiful outdoor setting. Photos by Toni Folzenlogel

Kendall Johnson is a native of Detroit, MI. She recently relocated to Boston, MA, where she is a second year Social Work PhD student at Boston University. She is the 25-year-old daughter of Michael and Tracy Johnson and is one of three girls. Her research interests focus on the effects of trauma and community violence on those who identify as black. The specific focus is on the impact of homicide for the surviving family members and friends that are left behind after a death has occurred. She is no stranger to the pageant world, having been competing since 2015. She has competed with Miss, Michigan, USA, Miss Lake State USA, Miss Nationwide, Captivating Pageants and Universal World Pageants. She just wrapped up her reign as Miss Universal World 2017. She is now transitioning into her new title of Miss Massachusetts Captivating. She is excited about competing for the national Miss Captivating title in Columbus, OH, in September of 2019. Her platform is called Project M.A.G.I.C. (Motivating Amazing Girls in underserved Communities). This project is about building self-esteem in young women. She will be working with an organization called Boston Cares in the upcoming year. She will focus on volunteer opportunities that provide resources, mentoring and support for young women in the Boston area. She is committed to amplifying young women's voices, especially in higher education, because she believes that is crucial to the success and health of this country. She started a mentoring program in her hometown of Detroit, MI, called Young Women Walking in Purpose. Additionally, she does volunteer work with Best Buddies Massachusetts Chapter, which is committed to advocating for inclusion of those with developmental disabilities. She also has recently started a blog called kendallthemodelscholar, in which she discusses her experience as a black, female scholar intertwined with her modeling and pageantry. Through this blog, she hopes to inspire other black women and girls to pursue their dreams and reach their fullest potential. In her spare time she is a frequent attender of movies at the theater and enjoys spending time with her six-month old black lab mix puppy, Nala.

Queens BROCK for a Cur e BEVERLY Queens for a Cure was founded in 2009 by Victoria Knight and Kennedy Miller. A friends mother passed away from breast cancer and Kennedy and Victoria began discussing the impact of breast cancer on their families and loved ones. Both Kennedy and Victoria had family members diagnosed with this disease. Inspired by the love of their own mothers, together they wondered if they could do something to help prevent more daughters from loosing their mothers. It is from this that Queens for a Cure was formed. http://www.queensforacure.com/

Victoria is now a teacher at Bellevue Christian Schools and a High School and Competitive Cheer coach at BHS and Connect Cheer NW. Kennedy is a Freshman at Clemson University where she's involved in many activities and interning with the athletic director.

Here we are celebrating in 2017. A total of $15,587.15. was raised at the pageant. Over the years combined we have donated over $140,000.00. It couldn't happen without our amazing volunteers working tirelessly year after year as well as our incredible contestants. A special moment every year is when we honor those who have lost the fight as well as those still fighting.
Victoria and Kennedy also wanted the winners of Queens for a Cure to have an opportunity to participate in events within their community and so they decided to donate their proceeds through the Race for the Cure. At the race all Queens for a Cure participants have the opportunity to proudly display their banners and crowns in recognition of their fund-raising efforts. Photos by Erick Choy Photography
