HUMANITIES HUMANITIES

Humanities cover a collection of subjects which investigate the human experience.

They are academic disciplines looking at areas of humans and their roles in society, culture and education. The Humanities subjects at Coulsdon College include History, Politics, Sociology and Geography and are all offered at A Level. Universities welcome the inclusion of a humanities subject in order to progress onto many degree courses.

History

If you are interested in the past, are keen to know how the present is shaped and what the future might hold in store, then History is the subject for you.

Your ideas, your opinions and your views will be asked for as we come to judge how and why events in history happened. Students will enjoy and do well in History if they have a genuine interest in the world and the history of how it has developed as well as analysing and problem solving based on collecting and assessing evidence.

Politics

Do you enjoy a stimulating and dynamic subject which investigates topical issues and controversies that affect our everyday lives?

Politics helps us understand how the British political system works, as well as developing an understanding of the core ideologies of liberalism, conservatism and socialism and another important ideology, multiculturalism. Students will develop a range of analytical, investigative and critical skills to use in whatever career path they choose. To do well in Politics, students will need to keep up-to-date with current affairs by reading a respected newspaper and watching or listening to the news on a weekly basis.

Geography

The world we live in is changing.

Geography allows us to see why and how it is changing. It can enhance communication skills, literacy and numeracy skills, IT literacy, spatial awareness, team-work and problem solving skills, as well as environmental awareness. Students will cover a wide range of topics and experience a variety of learning and teaching approaches. Geography students study a range of Human and Physical topics and explore how their own actions can relate to the wider world. Students will undertake geographical fieldwork and research as well as develop their geographical skills and their confidence in working with statistical techniques.

Sociology

Sociology is the study of society and how individuals and groups interact within it.

It deals with a wide range of questions and concepts that are relevant to contemporary life. Studying Sociology also involves looking at human action from a range of different perspectives and students are encouraged to see the world from many different angles. Students are encouraged to work together and use evidence to assess which point of view is the most accurate.

Throughout the course we try to answer questions such as:

How has the family changed? What leads people to commit crimes? Is religion still important today? What is mental illness?

When I came and visited the College, I was instantly attracted to the modern facilities and warm welcome. I also loved how the students are treated like adults and given so much independence by all teachers.

You’re taking part in the ParaCheer competition in the USA. What does this involve?

At the beginning of 2019, I trialled for Team England Paracheer, which is the national adaptive abilities team. Once I successfully got into the team, I started training every other weekend with people all over the country all with different disabilities. I decided to take part as it provided me with a new challenge that helps develop my teamwork skills and performance abilities. The cheerleading World Championships are held annually in Florida, where teams from across the world compete. My current team are the reigning World Champions so we are hoping to achieve that title again this year!

How has the support been at Coulsdon Sixth Form College?

I have personally found the support great here. I like that we have smaller classes than most colleges as it means teachers can take the time to help students and answer questions. The workshops that are used for our tests are really helpful as it means we get as much lesson time as possible.

What have you enjoyed most about your time here?

I have enjoyed meeting all my friends as I came to Coulsdon Sixth Form College not knowing anyone, but I quickly found a whole new friendship group. I also enjoy having lots of responsibility and independence.

What would you like to do after you finish your studies here?

After I finish my studies, I want to go on to study civil engineering. I’ve already had some work experience at a local civil engineering company but I’m currently considering to go on to study in America.

Do you have any advice for students looking to study here?

If you ever find yourself struggling with lesson content, don’t be afraid to talk to your teachers as they will take the time to help you. Also, make use of the LRC as it’s such a great facility that allows you to complete your work independently and peacefully.
