welcome

MARTHA HUTZEL n DIRECTOR

As our winter hibernation is drawing to a close, gardeners among CRRL staff are beginning to plan spring gardens both at home and at three of our library branches. Learn more about how CRRL Grows and gives back to the community on pages 35-36.

Stream Your Library by learning more about our online resources that empower you to check out eBooks, eAudio, and eMagazines to your device for free! (pages 9-10) I guarantee our 4th Annual CRRL-Con is a sight worth seeing. There’s an air of excitement and energy as hundreds of community members share their enthusiasm for their fandom. Not to mention the costumes! This issue’s cover provides only a small peek at what you can expect to see on May 19. (pages 5-6)

PHOTO: THE FREE LANCE–STAR

The library is proud of its many outstanding partnerships and I am always happy to see these exciting new directions. This year our long-standing partner, The Free Lance– Star, invited us to combine forces on their annual spelling bee. The 13th Annual Fredericksburg Regional Spelling Bee, sponsored for the first time by both The Free Lance– Star and the Central Rappahannock Regional Library, will be held on Saturday, March 17. (page 8) Later that very day, we are honored to host Emily St. John Mandel, author of Station Eleven. Thanks to the support of local sponsors, CRRL will host the event at the University of Mary Washington’s Stafford Campus. Her incredible book defies genres, and is an inspirational story of the power of art in the face of hardship. (page 7) We’re continuing the themes of Station Eleven in April by celebrating The Power of Poetry. The next generation of poets will shine in our annual Claudia Emerson Teen Poetry Contest, and all are invited attend our special events. (pages 21-22) I love the feel of a book in my hands, but I also enjoy the ease and lightness of my eReader. I encourage you to

Delegate Howell shared stories with children at Howell Branch during our 2017 Week of the Young Child celebration.

Much is happening in library building news. Stafford County passed a resolution renaming England Run the William J. Howell Branch in honor of the retiring House of Delegates Speaker who served in the General Assembly since 1988. Spotsylvania County has replaced the roof on Salem Church and laid new carpeting in Snow. The City has begun renovations on the 3rd floor of the Fredericksburg Branch which will allow us to create open space and study and meeting rooms. Stafford County has provided a beautiful new business center at our Porter Branch, which will allow us to create a much needed meeting room, and the Germanna/CRRL Joint Use Library is on target to open this summer.

The online catalog makes it easy to record materials you’ve checked out, and those you’d like to check out in the future! To record your borrowing history, log in to the online catalog and go to My Settings. Under Borrowing History, turn the slider to “On.” This will start recording what you’ve checked out and returned to the library. Borrowing history isn’t shared with anyone else—it’s private to you. It’s easy to move your items from Borrowing History to one of your three shelves: Completed, In Progress, and For Later. You can then add details to these items such as ratings, comments, tags, and videos. • Have a book in Borrowing History that you loved and want to write a comment about? Move it to your Completed shelf. • Have a book in your Borrowing History that you didn’t get to read before it needed to be returned? Add that to your For Later shelf. • You can also add titles manually to your shelves. Items that you are reading, watching, and listening to currently can be added to your In Progress shelf.

Week of the Young Child APRIL 16 –20

Children need a strong early learning foundation to succeed in school and to succeed in life.

DID YOU KNOW? • 90% of a child’s brain is developed before they reach kindergarten. • Children exposed to books early in life have better language skills than those who wait. • The seeds of a desirable workforce—critical thinking, teamwork, effective communication—are planted before the age of five.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? • Bring your children, and spread the word, about the library’s Grow a Reader classes. See pages 13–14 for class dates and locations. • Visit your local library regularly to check out titles that even your baby is sure to enjoy! • Read to your child daily and keep it fun! Stop reading as soon as they show you they’re done.

Special guest readers will join us in recognizing the importance of early childhood education. Visit librarypoint.org/WOYC for a complete schedule.

community partners We partner with more than one hundred local organizations and experts to offer services to our customers and to expand the reach of educational, social, and community-building causes. To explore a CRRL partnership, contact Samantha Thomason, CRRL’s Community Relations Manager, at samantha.thomason@crrl.org. To sponsor CRRL classes or events in return for recognition and promotional consideration, visit librarypoint.org/sponsorship. Germanna Community College and the Early Childhood Development department partner with the library to promote Week of the Young Child and a variety of other reading events. See page 15 for more information on Week of the Young Child, and other early childhood partners. Teresa Conour, MA. M. Ed., chairs Germanna’s Early Childhood Development program, which frequently uses the reading centers in CRRL branches to enhance student literacy. Germanna serves students from surrounding communities, many of whom have easier access to CRRL than the campus, so they depend on the library for reference materials, homework help, computer access, and when they need a quiet place to study.

“We enjoy a fruitful partnership with the library and share the common goal of improving lives through the transformative power of information, learning, and ideas to meet the growing needs of our region.”

Teresa Conour

Embrace Treatment Foster Care educates the community about foster care and educates parents about the process of becoming certified foster parents. See page 30 for their schedule of informational sessions at Salem Church Branch.

Gretchen Rusden is Recruitment Coordinator for Embrace Treatment Foster Care, and uses the library as a platform for educating the community. CRRL’s close community connections and meeting rooms provide an ideal location for Embrace to meet with parents in the community who wish to learn more about foster care, or be guided through the certification process.

“There are thousands of children in the foster care system. A stable, loving, supportive foster home is the key to making an impact in these children’s lives. Many children in our area are turned away because we do not have enough loving and nurturing homes to support them. We have the power to change that!”
