LIFELONG LEARNING FOR EVERYONE AT CENTRAL RAPPAHANNOCK REGIONAL LIBRARY
welcome MARTHA
HUTZEL â–
This summer the Central Rappahannock Regional Library (CRRL) system turns 50! On July 18, 1969, our Fredericksburg Branch opened its doors . Funded by the state as part of a newly formed library system, that single branch offered library services and bookmobiles not only for city residents, but those in Spotsylvania, Stafford, and Westmoreland counties. It was only a few years later that this demonstration regional library system was deemed a success and the localities took over funding. Learn more about the history of CR RL on page 27 and celebrate with us at one of this year's Fun Fests (back cover) . We've supersized these annual end-of-summer parties in honor of our birthday!
And look at us now! Fifty amazing years later, CRRL has ten branches throughout those same jurisdictions including one in a shopping mall, the Spotsylvania Towne Centre, and another in partnership with Germanna Community College . Instead of bookmobiles, which are now costprohibitive, we have two Library on the Go vehicles which travel throughout the region to assisted and residential living facilities, daycares, and community centers . The Summer of 1969 was momentous for some non-CRRL related reasons as well. We're celebrating

DIRECTOR
Woodstock (page 28) and honoring the moon landing with special Shoot for the Stars events (page 7) . Our summer reading theme is also out of this world . A Universe of Stories refers not only to the amazing world of experiences that await you at your library, but also the plethora of books, fiction and nonfiction, physical and electronic, audio and film, that you'll find there .
This summer will see the opening of a year-round Friends of the Library Center and Bookshop (page 37) providing more space to sell and store the many donations the Friends receive. We are very grateful to the Friends for their support of this project and for the many volunteers who are making this possible . A small corner of the space has also been carved out for picking up and checking out library holds, offering another convenient location to access the library. We look forward to celebrating with you this summer!

behind the scenes Angela uses her acumen and charm to guide CRRL staff to professional success. How did you get involved with library service? In 2013 I became a Teen Mentor in OurSpace, an after-school program for middle and high school students at the Salem Church Branch. It was very challenging and extremely rewarding. I loved guiding teens toward challenging goals and watching them develop. Why is your job important? Being CRRL's Human Resources Manager has been my most notable responsibility. It's an opportunity for me to make a difference in the lives of so many people. I get to offer jobs and promotions as well as listen to concerns and help to resolve misunderstandings. This job also gives me the opportunity to be
a lifelong learner. As a Society of Human Resources Managers Certified Professional, I am required to take regular classes.
What do you like best about working for the library? I enjoy working with so many people from a variety of backgrounds. What is one of the best-kept secrets about the library? Everyone should know about Libby for access to an unlimited number of eBooks and eAudiobooks, and Kanopy for classic streaming video. When you're not working, what do you like to do? Spend time with my family, create art, and listen to jazz and Motown oldies.
Angela Hopkins Human Resources Manager What books are you reading, audiobooks are you listening to, or movies or series are you watching? I thoroughly enjoyed listening to If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin and The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo, and am currently listening to Becoming by Michelle Obama. I enjoy anything written by Kwame Alexander or Jason Reynolds.
Commuter Space tales to transport you to a galaxy far, far away from the daily grind.
