THE CRUISING CLUB OF AMERICA

The Cruising Club of America was launched in the winter of 1921-22 by a group of yachtsmen interested in cruising and the development of the cruising type of yacht.

It was felt that this branch

of the sport never had attained the position it de serves in a country so rich in sea-going tradition and

whose natural advantages are so peculiarly

favorable to cruising, possibly because of the fact that there never has been any concerted action by cruising enthusiasts. The yacht clubs of the country have made racing a large part of their activities and there are several inter-club associations devoted to the advancement of this branch of yachting, but there never has been in this country an organization comparable, for ex ample, to the Royal Cruising Club, which, in the last forty years, has done so much toward making cruising a national institution in Great Britain. And so the Cruising Club of America was launched and it was but natural that its founders, familiar as they were with the work of the Royal Cruising Club, should have moulded it somewhat along the lines of the older organization.

REPORT OF THE HISTORIAN FOR 1946

The resumption of the Bermuda Race was a feature of the Club’s 1946 season. The revival was hailed with enthusiasm from coast to coast, and abroad, and at one time the entries numbered 45, though bad hitting-out conditions and lack of replacement material for war-damaged boats and gear pulled the final starting fleet at Newport down to 34 sail. 13 in class A and 19 in B. One British entry, the yawl Latifa sailed by a Royal Ocean Racing Club crew, took part, finishing 6th in class A. There were a few post-war-built boats and many old-timers, including eight schooners. The Naval and Coast Guard Academies had two entries each and the U.S.S. Carpelotti, a detroyer escort, went along to chaperone them. The wind was out of the southwesterly quarter from start to finish, few yachts ever being able to hold a course for the island until after they had sighted it. For the first 24 hours there was a good breeze and all made good time on the starhoard tack. After that the wind steadily softened and it de veloped into a slow, discouraging struggle to keep moving on any course within five points of the desired heading. Baruna, first yacht to finish, made it in 119 hours. 3 minutes. 5 seconds of sailing, and the last of the small boats took 7!/? days. A. Howard Fuller’s sloop Gesture won the Bermuda Trophy and first prize in class A, in which Mrs. Barbara Henry’s Good News took second place and H. C. Taylor’s Baruna third on corrected time. In class B. Robert F. deCoppets yawl Suluan, one of the few new boats, took first place after a grand race with Rod Stephen’s Mustang, and Philip Flandelman's Chee Chce IV was third. The sloop prize went to Gesture, the ketch-yawl prize to Good News and the schooner prize to deCoursey Fales’ Nina. The Finley Trophy, for yachts built prior to 1932 was won by the Naval Academy’s sloop Highland Light, holder of the course record of 7 1 hours, 35 minutes, 43 seconds, set in 1932. A new prize, the Thomas Fleming Day Memorial Trophy, for yachts of less than 40 feet top measure, was won by Ralph Case’s yawl Alcyone. H. R, Laws, cook of John Martucci’s Iris, got the Galley Slave Trophy, for the cook on the last boat to finish, and Chick Larkin, of Gesture, the Navigator's Trophy. There was but one casualty, the sloop Flirt losing the upper part of her mast in a squall due to rigging failure, but she made Bermuda safely.

49

THe Bermuda Race was but one feature of the club's 1946 activities, the most important of which are, of course, the cruises of individual members and of groups of yachts of the Club and of its various stations. The Clubs 1946 cruise proved that thirty boats can have a wonderful time on a cruise even if bad weather and the spirit rugged individualism play hob with the pre-arranged sched ule. Twenty-three anchored near Commodore Ratsey’s Wogg Too in Block Island on the mid-August Saturday, and held a rousing rendezvous. The schedule called for an overnight cruising run to Nantucket, starting the following evening, but half the fleet decided to go to Cuttyhunk on Sunday instead. The weather turned bad that night and most of the fleet was scattered among Newport, Cuttyhunk, Menemsha and other ports by Monday morning. Only six ever did get to Nantucket, but a couple of days later most of the fleet, again totalling 23 sail, was assembled in Hadley's Harbor. There mutiny set in again and instead of pushing on to Stonington they ran to Cuttyhunk, and held another fine jamboree ashore and afloat there. Then the fleet began to break up, only about half of them finally calling in at the official disbanding port of Ston ington. So much for fixed schedules. The gang who took part in the cruise had such a good time they are now convinced that schedules were made to be broken. The Decoration Day and Labor Day rendezvous of the club were held at Price's Bend, L. 1., as usual, the latter being preceded by a gathering of the fleet and a dinner at the Indian Harbor Yacht Club. A new feature of the season, which all who took part hope will become an annual one, was the late October cruise on Chesapeake Bay, held by the newly-formed Philadelphia Station headed by Earle Smith. Guests from New York and other stations participated aboard various yachts, the ports visited being Gibson Island and Oxford, Md. The customary monthly dinners were held at the New York Yacht Club during the off season, and in addition to some in teresting entertainment they served as reunions for the many members who had been scattered about the world in the ser vices during the war. The death, in his 92nd year, of William P. Stephens, his torian of the Club since its birth, was a sad loss to us all, and any omissions and shortcomings in this 1946 historical report can be blamed on his successor.

WILLIAM H. TAYLOR. Historian

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON AWARDS

1947

During the year 1946 we have been on

the lookout for

deepwater cruises which might be deserving of the Blue Water Medal. We have learned of none. We have carefully considered trans-Atlantic voyages by refugees from the Baltic coun tries, and a single-handed trans-Atlantic voyage, but we were unanimously of the opinion that such voyages were not "meritorius examples of seamanship** in the sense of qualifying for the award of the medal. It may be that we have not been informed of some deserving voyage. If any member of the Club knows of one which may merit the award, we shall be glad to reopen the question of a Blue Water Medal for 1946 and consider the evid ence. Your Committee suggests that each

member of the

Club

the matter of the should regard himself as a talent scout in i Blue Water Medal; and if he learns of a meritorious voyage which in its preparation, extent and execution may qualify it for the award, that he send us information about it, including the log or other appropriate data.

Members in various parts

of the world may hear of worthy voyages which we would miss entirely unless they pass the word to us.

WILLIAM H. TAYLOR Chairman, Committee on Awards

THE BLUE WATER MEDAL

Feeling that there were many noteworthy voyages made in small boats, and frequent examples or meritorious seaman ship displayed by amateur sailors of all nationalities that went unrecognized, it seemed to the members of the Cruising Club of America that this organization was the fitting one to properly record and reward such adventure upon the sea. Therefore, at the annual meeting on February 27. 1923, the following resolution was passed, founding a medal that, it was hoped, might prove an incentive for carrying on the spirit of adventure and upholding the best traditions of sea faring that are our heritage from the past. "Moved and seconded that the Club found, out of funds to be sought for the purpose, a medal to be known as The Blue Water Medal of the Cruising Club of America, to be awarded annually, in the discretion of the Board of Governors, for the year’s most meritorious example of seamanship, the re cipient to be selected from among the amateurs of all the nations." In pursuance of this resolution a suitable medal, five inches in diameter, was made, the design being by the late Arthur Sturgis Hildebrand, a member of this club and one of the crew of the yacht Leiv Eiriksson, lost in the Arctic with all hands in September 1924. At the Annual Meeting held January 8, 1931, the following resolution was unanimously carried: RESOLVED: That the Governing Board be and hereby is authorized to approve of the awarding of the Blue Water Medal, without date, on the recommendation of the Com mittee on Awards.

bered I 26. Wherever one cruised last spring, summer and fall till ice A*^"**^ the New England coast, the Cruising Club of America burgee was the “banner in the sky.” And w:th the snow drops of *47 the same and oiher hardy members will be found fitting out and sliding in for a season to end all seasons since presently it would seem they mean to sail around the calendar. Our May rendezvous at Manchester drew a good fleet of boats, which was nice, and a dirty, wet northeaster which was not. But Shipmate fires on Roarin’ Bessie and Borogove 111 outgrabed the mome raths. The weather failed again on the Nantucket rendezvous week end. However, all 15 Cruising Club vessels were there ahead of the big blow which prevented most of the New York fleet from joining up. This year one thing is certain Limmershin with your Commodore's flag at the truck, and your Rear Com modore and Fleet Captain will make every effort to provide smooth seas, fair winds and full moons for all occasions I But we despair of equalling such perfect control of fog banks as the Bermuda Race officials exercised for our happy delegation last June. September saw fifteen entries in the Jeffries* Ledge Race, omitted during the recent unpleasantness. Starts were con ventional, the Committee quietly coming alongside the starters at allowed times in Manchester inner harbor, crews, stern and

gentle, being below at high tension with anchors down and sails in stops. The course was Peaked Hill Bar. Jeffries’ little whistler and home — a hundred and forty very odd miles. Ex actly 22.07.38 after getting her "gOi’ Pirouette fi nished to win and within the same nine-minute period four others crossed. Close fun! And throughout the year, from the call for the January sup per to the hail for the December Annual Meeting. Rear Commo dore Smith (ret.) decorated his notices and prizes with such charming original designs and addressed his gatherings in such pleasing words that it is an honor for this historian to drop down the dusty Bost on ladder with him in favor of a younger literary pilot. T. S. R. (Ret.)

ESSEX STATION Post-Captain George P. P. Bonnell 30 Rockefeller Plaza. N ew York City. Secretary Samuel Wetherill Essex. Conn. The Essex Station of the Cruising Club of America was formed in the spring of 1940. an d is located at Essex, Connecticut, on the Connecticut River, about six miles from Saybrook Light, with headquarters at the Essex Yacht Club. At present, the Station is composed of approximately 20 members of the Club. There is an excellent anchorage for yachts up to 12 feet draft off the Es.^ex Yacht Club, the most southerly waterfront building and dock of the town. Moorings may almost always be arranged for by applying to Harbor Master Dyke Wetmore, whose office adjoins the Essex Yacht Club property. There is excellent dockage, both in front of the Club, and to the north ward. where all supplies — fuel, water, ice, food, marine hard ware. etc. — are conveniently available. Three yacht yard.s are located in Essex, capable of full service to all types of yachts. Yachts may be left at Essex from week end to week end. and supervision and care arranged for. Many yachtsmen are taking advantage of the Essex anchorage as a point of departure for many and varied cruising grounds easily reached in a short time — Long Island Sound. Block Island Sound. Gardiner's Bay. Peconic Bay. Fisher's Island Sound, etc. The quaint and picturesque town of Essex has many attrac tions which must be seen to be appreciated. A modern motion picture theatre, and summer stock theatre, are nearby. Attrac-

138 live taverns and inns serve excellent meals at moderate prices. Ship’s larders may be replenished in any of several up-to-date stores. Yachts going to Essex should not fail to visit attractive and landlocked Hamburg Cove, about a mile above the town. There is beautiful scenery, absolute quiet, and perfect protection in all weather. Essex may be reached from New York in three hours by using Merritt Parkway and Route I to New Haven, Route 80 to Essex. Air-conditioned trains from Boston and New York to Saybrook Junction, and 10-minute taxi ride put Essex within commuting distance of our large Eastern cities. Mail may be sent in care of the Essex Yacht Club, where a steward will welcome visitors. Telephone and shower baths are available at the Club. Launch service goes into action upon blowing of the usual three toots on the ship's horn. The Essex Yacht Club and the Town of Essex extends a cordial welcome to all visiting yachtsmen.

BRANFORD STATION Post-Captain John Killam Murphy Killam's Point, Branford. Conn.; Tel. Branford 522 Secretary Thomas F. Cooke, Killam's Point, Branford, Conn.; Tel. Branford 291, ring 2. Winter meetings are held in New Haven, and summer activity mainly centers in the Branford River where vessels of most of the members are moored. The Post-Captain or the Secretary will gladly furnish information in regard to activities of the Station, anchorages and mooring conditions in this and near by harbors; also in regard to supplies, repairs of hull, motor and rigging and be of every possible assistance to club members. Branford Yacht Club pier, newly located one quarter mile up-stream from river mouth, affords good facilities for taking on gas, ice and water; groceries about a quarter mile distant. Branford town, a few minutes by motor or trolley, has good shops; and New Haven is about 30 minutes by trolley. Branford outer harbor affords fair shelter in all but southwe.sterly winds; however, members are advised to enter Bran ford River, which is sheltered in anv wind. Local boats moor bow and stern to stakes on the channel bank, as the river bottom is .soft deep mud. and barges sometimes tow up the channel. Vacant stakes are usually available on application to Al. Johnson, in charge of the Branford Yacht Club. Except for small boats in good winds, power is needed for maneuvering in the river.

139 PHILADELPHIA STATION Rear Commodore Earle Smith I I I South Broad Street, Philadelphia 7, Pa. Secretary John F. Meigs Annapolis, Maryland At a dinner held in Philadelphia during the winter of 194546, several Cruising Club members joined together and formed the Philadelphia Station. It was felt by these members that there was a need for such a station to bring together members scattered through the states of New Jersey .Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia, and through this closer association to stimulate Cruising Club activities in the Chesa peake. When first formed there were present nine Club members and with this small group a start was made. Notices were sent out to other members, who due to their geographical location might be interested in joining this group, and as of the end of the year the membership has increased to 28. The Philadelphia Station sponsored a fall rendezvous in the Chesapeake in October. To this meeting were asked all mem bers as well as their guests and a fleet of eleven boats with a total of fifty-four members and guests attended. The sailing orders called for all boats to rendezvous at Gibson Island on Friday evening October 18th where the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron opened their club house to us and provided an Oyster Roast and bonfire on the beach. Saturday at 8:30 a.m. a start was made with the day's desti nation the Tred Avon Yacht Club at Oxford, Maryland. Light north and northwest winds provided a fine sail, the fleet com pleting the run by 4:30 p.m. Here again we were provided with the use of the Yacht Club and a grand Turkey Dinner. It is the firm resolution of the Station to make a Fall ren dezvous its biggest annual event and plans are under way toward that end already. The Annual meeting of the station will be held in February at which time plans for the coming year will be formulated. It is hoped that this station may find its place alongside Boston and other stations and through its Fall rendezvous give members from other loctiions some of the pleasures of cruising in the Chesapeake.

140 NORTHEAST HARBOR STATION Post-Captain Edward W. Madeira c/o The Clifton Dock Corporation, Northeast Harbor, Me. The Northeast Harbor Station of The Cruising Club of America was formed in 1947, and is located at Northeast Har bor, Maine, on the South side of Mount Desert Island. Its head quarters, thanks to the cooperation of The Clifton Dock Cor poration, is the Clifton Dock on the West side of the entrance to Northeast Harbor. At present the Station is composed of eight members of the Club who spend their summers at North east Harbor, or elsewhere on Mount Desert Island. There is an excellent anchorage off the Clifton Dock, and moorings are usually available. Ice, gasoline, oil and water are available at the Clifton Dock every day during the season from 8:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M, Supplies may be secured at a number of first-class stores in the nearby village and can be delivered to the Clifton Dock. A motion picture theatre is located in the village. Ship yards and marine railways are available at nearby Southwest Harbor or Mount Desert. Mail can be sent c/o The Clifton Dock Corporation, Northeast Harbor, Maine Telephone is available and a registry of Yachts is main tained. Northeast Harbor may be reached overnight from New York or Boston by the Maine Central Railroad to Ells worth, Maine, and thence by bus, or by N.E. Airlines to Bangor, distant 50 miles, thence by rail, bus or taxi to North east Harbor. The Northeast Harbor Fleet and residents of Northeast Har bor extend a cordial welcome to all visiting Yachtsmen.

HUNTINGTON STATION Post-Captain Robert H. Moore Huntington, L. I. Tel, Huntington-4 Secretary Wm. A. Rushmore Membership Committee Kenneth C. Stephens The Huntington Station has never been active with respect to meetings but it has been used consistently and frequently as a between-week stopover for Cruising Club members. We

141

have provided taxi service and helped out in various ways where yachts were left at the local shipyards. In fact, one chap in a motor sailer from Marblehead had a sudden death in the family and turned his boat over to us. We put her out of commission and had her hauled and stored for the winter. We have also arranged on many occasions to get members out to Price s Bend and Lloyd’s Harbor rendezvous. Quite a few times we have met people at the station and taken them via car to the Sand Spit at Price's Bend. Hartwell Moore and Bob Hall also liv e in Huntington and would be only too pleased to help any Crui.sing Club member if 1 were not available. We have three yacht yards and fuel oil, gasoline, lubricating oil and ice i- can be gotten at the Huntington Yacht Club where guest moorings are provided by the Club and assigned by the dock man. Will Rushmore has not b een active for several years owing to poor health nor has Kenneth Stephens, but the rest of us are always williing and anxious to give a hand whenever we can.

142

SUMMER DIRECTORY FOR CRUISING CLUB MEMBERS Often those putting into a port on a cruise would like to know whether any of their Cruising Cluh friends live there either all the year or during the summer months. This applies es])ecially to ports outside of the Xew York and Boston metrojjolitan areas, h'or that reason in pre paring the directory we have omitted names and adclresses for all meml;ers residing along the .Sound in the vicinity of New York, including Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay, on the south side, and Stamford on the north, and also residents of Boston and its suburbs. 1 940 CRUSING CLUB OF AMERICA MEASUREMENT RULE FOR OCEAN RACING

As many Cruising Club members are not interested in these rules, while many of those who do not belong to the Club are interested, these rules are printed sepa rately. Copies may be had from the Secretary at the rate of $3.00 per hundred (single copies free to members).

BERMUDA RACES Historical note by Herbert L. Stone

When the idea presented itself in racing and particularly the race to

1923, of reviving ocean Bermuda

which

had

not

been sailed for some fourteen years, there was no organization ready to handle the matter so YACHTING got a group of prominent yachtsmen including Charles D. M ower. John Alden, Allen Weeks of New Bedford, Sam

Wetherill and the writer

to form a committee to make the rules, run the :race and pro¬ vide the prizes without the help of any yacht club. The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club agreed to handle the finish and these two committees worked together very well. The race was such a success that the next year there was demand for its repetition, and this time the same committee handled the conditio ns and the New Rochelle Yacht Club agreed to start the boats from New Lond on and its race committee took over that function.

Before the next race in I 926, the then newly organized Cruiaing Club of America became interested in the ocean-going boats, and the backers of the first two races asked the club to take over and sponsor the event. This the club agreed to do and ever since then it has handled the entire race in conjunction with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

The

Cruising

Club

took

the

initiative

in

developing

the

various measurement rules which have come into being and, in addition to handling the Bermuda Race, also promoted two trans-Atlantic races, one from Newport to Plymouth in 1931, and one from Newport to Norway in 1935. It is the club’s interest, backing and that has made these long United States.

YACHT CLUBS SIGNAL CODE (Uniform with other Yacht Clubs)

The Signals in the Club Code consist chiefly of signals for intercommunication between vessels of the squadron. They comprise: Special, Racing and Emer-f One flag geiicy Signals 1 Two flags General Signals: Designation; Days of the Week: Hours of the Day: Three Compass Signals:

A to 2 A AZ BA GZ 14 HZ HA IQ 41 IZ KY JA AQD “ AST

Yachts using this Code shall hoist Club Burgee over Code flags. The absence of the Burgee indicates the International Code is used. When more hoists than one are shown, the foremost hoist is to be read first. All ships to which signals are addressed are to hoist the answering pennant as soon as they see each hoist. To call a pilot, hoist the Union Jack at the foreyard, or in the fore rigging. To call a tow boat, hoist the ensign in the main rigging, a little above the rail. The signal of execution for all signals is the hauling down of the signal. When additional signals are needed, they will be au thorized by general orders, and should be entered in dub books.
