WITH YOUR HELP, THE BEAT CAN GO ON
The power to save a life is in your hands. According to the American Heart Association, 80% of victims of sudden cardiac arrest collapse at home. By learning CPR you could save the life of a loved one. Quick bystander action in a cardiac arrest emergency is critical to a victim’s survival. Four to six minutes is the window of opportunity for someone to act before it is too late. Sadly, fewer than one-third of cardiac arrest victims get CPR from someone nearby. Sand Lake Ambulance would like to thank and commend the 40 community members who completed the AHA HeartSaver AED, Adult/ Infant/ Child CPR, and Choking training on February 8th. Six children, ages 9 to 13, took the class! Paramedic Robbie MacCue explained the beat to “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees could help to keep a loved one alive. It turns out the 1977 disco hit has 103 beats per minute, a perfect number to maintain and retain the best rhythm for performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR. By increasing the number of local residents who know how to respond properly to sudden cardiac arrest, Sand Lake Ambulance hopes to increase the odds of bystander CPR and AED use and give more cardiac arrest victims a better chance at life. The next free community CPR training date is scheduled for Tuesday March 22, 2011. Two classes will be held: 5:00-6:30 PM and 7:00-8:30 PM. Topics will include Adult, Child & Infant CPR, choking and using the AED. No written exam or tests. Please call 674-2221 ext 2 to leave a message with the number of people, phone number and which class you will attend as parking space is limited. Please help spread the word with your neighbors and friends encouraging them to learn CPR.

Artist Spotlight CELEBRATE AFRICA: STUDENT ART CONTEST
*SKATING *HIKING *MOVIES *GAMES *CROSS COUNTRY SKIING and more! FRIENDS OF CHERRY PLAIN STATE PARK TO HOST “WINTERLUDE” EVENT
By Courtney Kane Emily Long with her mask (Visual Arts Editor) On January 21st, 2011, twenty-three Averill Park High School students had the opportunity to participate in Proctors’ Celebrate Africa: Student Art Contest. Held by Proctors’ Education Department, students were allowed to let their creative minds come out to play as they created pieces inspired by African culture, while also promoting the opening of Disney’s The Lion King premiering at Proctors from February 22nd to March 20th. As the time came for the showing of the pieces, viewers were given a voting sheet; the people’s opinion alone would determine the overall winner of the contest who received $1,500 and an additional $1,000 to their school’s art department. While a Shenendehowa student won the grand prize, one of our very own Averill Park students was lucky enough and talented enough to capture the eyes of the judges for the 2nd Place Juror’s Honorable Mention Award. Junior Emily Long was awarded with four passes to a dance performance at Proctors for the obvious talent and effort that was displayed in her Africa mask. Emily, along with seventeen fellow sculpture students began learning about African culture in the beginning of the year, so when sculpture teacher Mrs. Wager at Averill Park High School found out about the contest, she thought it “fit beautifully.” As proved true, when not only did Emily Long gain recognition from the judge’s themselves, but Ava Welling’s and Hannah Butkus’ artwork was printed on the announcement sheets for the show. Hannah Butkus is also a student of fellow Averill Park High School art teacher Ms. Gregory who had five of her own students participate in the show. “The judges held Averill Park students in high regard,” said by Mrs. Wager herself. When asked how she felt about winning the honorable mention award, Emily Long said, “I was really surprised, I never thought I would get recognized, everything was so amazing, even the elementary student’s art was great!” Here at Averill Park we’re proud to see the amazing amount of effort our students devote to creating art and becoming the best possible artist they can be. It’s safe to say, we’re all very excited to see what’s coming next. Averill Park Participants: Kristina Melius, Brittany Noland, Jessica Lyman, Amber Clark, Sierra Owens, Lyndsay Spallane, Samantha DiLello, Jeffery Winters, Maranda Rossi, Andrew Kowal, Victoria Zywot, Emily Long, Hannah Butkus, Sivan Saati, Gabriella Malo, Aundrea Meka, Brooke Ryan, Victoria Reynolds, Molly O’Bryan, Ava Welling, Morgan Kunz, Adam Heisig, Chelsea Meissner.

Letter to the Editor: It was with interest that I read the North Greenbush Supervisor’s Report in last week’s Advertiser. The positive tone of the article was a refreshing change from Supervisor reports in past months which tended to parrot the negative attitudes of a few malcontents who waste most of their time spinning every decision or statement made, no matter how beneficial to the town, into a political issue. To continue the positive direction of the Supervisor’s report could only be a plus for North Greenbush. There are so many individuals, both paid staff and volunteers who give unselfishly of their time and expertise. It would be seen by many as a step in the right direction if Mrs. Ashworth were to recognize these people and their efforts to bring a variety of opportunities to North Greenbush and its residents. Many of you would be surprised to find out how hard so many work to make our town a wonderful place to live and raise our families. The Town Board has been responsible for the progress that has been made in North Greenbush. Lou Desso, Al Spain, Kelly Hoffman and Joe Bott deserve our thanks for moving the town forward, making the hard decisions and staying positive. Mrs. Ashworth needs to continue the positive Supervisor Reports. She has so many Boards and Committees to choose from, and hopefully, it will encourage others to volunteer their time for the benefit of our town. Keep moving in the right direction Mrs. Ashworth, North Greenbush deserves to feel good about itself and you can help. ~Judith D. As legislative representatives of District 2, including the towns of East Greenbush, North Greenbush and Poestenkill, we are happy to provide our constituents with a report on actions taken at the February 8, 2011 legislative meeting. Several years ago, New York State ordered the county to construct an expansion to the county jail. The county decided to construct the expansion to allow for the possible boardingin of inmates from municipalities outside the county. There are numerous counties with overcrowding issues. These include counties in Vermont which are now transporting prisoners to New Jersey and traveling past Rensselaer County. Boardingin these Vermont inmates would be a benefit to those counties and would provide revenues that defray costs for the county. The resolution approved at the February 8 meeting seeks required state permission to allow for prisoners from out of the state to be boarded-in. Several weeks ago, the County Legislature achieved a major savings through a rebid of the county insurance policy. The new policy will save the county about $900,000 over the next three years, and the county now pays less for insurance than what was paid in the early 1990s. We are proud to also announce that a savings was achieved in the county legislative offices, with spending reduced by $130,000 during 2010. That savings follows a spending reduction of $160,000 in 2009. The savings have been assigned to a taxpayer protection fund that will be used to keep tax rates stable and protect needed services. Legislators also supported an effort to encourage more who live and work in the county to conduct motor vehicle transactions with the county Department of Motor Vehicles operated by Rensselaer County Clerk Frank Merola. The county receives a portion of the transactions from the DMV, and those funds help defray the costs of providing the service. We also joined legislators in supporting ongoing mandate relief efforts that could reduce county expenses. The New York State Association of Counties has called for reform of the nine mandates that drive up costs on the local level, with the NYSAC plan receiving bi-partisan support on the local level. The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, March 8, 2011. Residents are welcome to contact us at our legislative offices by writing to the Rensselaer County Legislature, 1600 7th Avenue, Troy NY 12180 or by e-mailing us via the official legislative website at www.rensselaercounty.org.
RENSSELAER LAND TRUST PROTECTS AGRICULTURAL LAND IN SCHODACK
Gerald E. and Shirley W. Dunn have donated an agricultural easement on their farmland, the Shadbush Hill, in Schodack to the Rensselaer Land Trust. The 30 acre property on Sagendorf Road in the Town of Schodack, Rensselaer County has historically been a farm with fields, an apple orchard, woodlands, a pond and a wetland area. The agricultural easement protects the property from development by keeping it agriculturally viable and productive, fosters landscape-scale conservation by reducing land fragmentation and it preserves its natural ecosystems, wildlife habitats and the water quality and quantity of the Balekill Stream, which is part of the Muitzeskill Creek watershed, that flows into the Hudson River. When signing the easement, the Dunn’s observed that: “Successful protection of farmland is critical to the future of Rensselaer County. We appreciate the opportunity to preserve this land whose scenic beauty and passive recreational use we have enjoyed for more than 45 years. Now is the time to protect these important resources. Farms are being converted to other uses to accommodate the county’s rise in population at the expense of food production, wildlife habitats and open space. We have chosen to make Rensselaer County our home for 53 years.” Rensselaer Land Trust is the only not-for-profit land trust primarily dedicated to the preservation of natural spaces throughout Rensselaer County, especially land that protects sources of drinking water, areas that serve as natural habitats for wildlife, and land that maintains the scenic rural character of the community.

REPUB. COMM. CHAIRMAN WELCOMES SENATOR GILLIBRAND TO BRUNSWICK
Letter to the Editor: Like all Brunswick residents I was absolutely thrilled last week to hear the news that Senator Kirsten Gillibrand had purchased a home in our fine town. Like a growing number of people, the Senator, and former Congresswoman, has gotten to know Brunswick as a great place to live and raise a family. Ever since her run for Congress, Senator Gillibrand has always made Brunswick a regular stop in her very busy schedule. In addition, she has always kept a laser focus on the issues affecting farmers, something that is critical to all Brunswick residents. Our Senator and former Congresswoman has proven that she is willing to put on her boots and walk through the mud and muck in so many Rensselaer County farms because she is dedicated to the success and prosperity of not just Brunswick, or Rensselaer County, but of our great state. Senator Gillibrand, I welcome you to the Town of Brunswick, not as a member of an opposition party, but as your neighbor. Thank you for choosing Brunswick and I sincerely hope that you will enjoy your time here, in this jewel of the Capital Region. ~Joseph Jabour - Chairman, Brunswick Republican Committee

ORDERS GIVEN TO TAKE SAND LAKE COMMUNITY VAN OFF THE ROAD
Letter to the Editor: Sand Lake Town Attorney Donna ColePaul has instructed the Town Board to take the Community Van off the road rather than comply with the finding of the US Department of Transportation Federal Transit Administration Office of Civil Rights regarding its lack of handicapped accessibility. It appears that the Town Attorney acted without the Board’s prior approval. Since the “State Member Item/ Grant” under which the van was procured required that the van be handicapped accessible, a complaint was filed with the NYS Attorney General’s Office and subsequently referred to the Public Integrity Bureau asking that the terms of the grant be enforced. Town personnel were advised to refer residents (including the handicapped) to the County for transportation. It should be noted that only “eligible seniors” can be served by the County and as of 2/14 there is no handicapped accessible van “on the road” in Rensselaer County. If you or a loved one are or have been in need of handicapped transportation, or were unable to obtain timely transportation for medical services, please call Simeon Goldman, Senior Staff Attorney, Office of Disability Advocates, Inc. at 518-432-7861 to share your story. It is anticipated that the Town will choose to go to court to fight this complaint rather than to act to do the morally correct thing and make the van accessible to both handicapped citizens and seniors with limited mobility issues. ~Barbara Martinage, Averill Park Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

LT. COLONEL ELMER W. KILCAULEY DAY
A resolution was passed by Rensselaer City Common Council and proclaimed by Mayor Daniel Dwyer that February 16, 2011 was Lt. Colonel Elmer W. Kilcauley Day. It was to honor the 97-year-old Kilcauley for his military service. At the same time, Rensselaer County Executive Kathleen Jimino awarded Certificates of Congratulations from the Office of the County Executive and Commendation from the Rensselaer County Legislature, Stammel’s Office, District 6. Elmer, “Kil”, was born and lived in Rensselaer. He enlisted in the Army on March 11, 1942 during World War II and was sent to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, training in logistics. After active service, he entered the Army Reserve. In 1946 he married his wife, Lois. They had two daughters. Kil was recalled to active service for the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in California when transferred to Germany during the Berlin Crisis. Next, Elmer was stationed at the Boston Army Base. In 1966 he was called to serve in Viet Nam. At his retirement from The U. S. Army in March 1967, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for service in Viet Nam. Elmer and Lois reside in North Port, FL. Besides daughters Karen Thomas and Linda Dellaire, they have 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Elmer would love to hear from people. Contact niece, Ms. Clements, 283.7166 or Linda Dellaire, 781.910.2143. Some readers may know Elmer from his frequenting the “camp” on Meadow Rd., Burden Lake (1st), which he and sister, Elizabeth Campbell, shared.
TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH PLANS A CELEBRATION OF ITS HISTORY
The transforming congregations committee is planning a ‘’Homecoming Sunday for March 6th, at a reception following the 11:00 a.m. service. We need your help, so please start thinking. 1. We have a display of the Trinity time line on display in the hallway. Please add information about your history with TrinityBaptisms, Confirmations, First Communions and date you joined Trinity. We can look through church records if you need help. 2. Dig out photos, programs, and memorabilia of meaningful events you have experienced at Trinity. Jot down memories such as junior or senior choir, youth group events, couples clubs, Knights of Luther and programs like Mother and Daughter banquets and Cantatas and give them to Gretchen Romanelli or leave them in the pastor’s mailbox in the back hall. Original photos will be scanned and returned to you. 3. Suggest names and addresses of former members and friends of Trinity so that we can send invitations by mid-February. The reception following the service will include light refreshments and fellowship where members and visitors can share their recollections, including a brief presentation on the ‘’rich’’ history of our church dating back over 200 years old. Mark your calendars for this ‘’special event’’, and please call Gretchen Romanelli at 479-3748, Wayne Mizerak at 674-3166 or Pastor Jim Hulihan at 674-5501. Trinity Lutheran Church, West Sand Lake, has a great history and as we look up some of the history and the events that came out as result of this great congregation it is so exciting. We remember, Hazel Baxter, who belonged to Trinity, and she was the lady who started ‘’Doors of Hope’’ or when she started it , it was called ‘’Four Doors Down” as it was four doors down from the corners of West Sand Lake. We are sure many of you remember that time and could also furnish us with some information re that time. Her love for her church and her savior still lives on today with ‘’Doors of Hope’’. So please, come look at the ‘’ trinity time line’’ displayed in the hallway and mark it with events that you remember. Do you hear the beautiful chimes which ring three times a day and also the beautiful cross hanging on the altar...do you remember who they are in memory of??? Trinity has a wonderful history and a very vibrant congregation, and we want to continue to worship and honor our Lord, Jesus Christ, and reach out to our community.

TRUSTEE HOWARTH RUNNING for RE-ELECTION in VILLAGE of NASSAU
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Village residents for allowing me to serve as a Nassau Village Trustee for the past four years. At this time, I am seeking re-election as Trustee, and I respectfully ask for your support on Election Day. We are all aware that federal and state aid is being massively cut across the board. Our small village will be greatly affected by these cuts. Significant changes will need to be made to reduce the tax burden on Village residents. As a taxpayer and Trustee, I strongly support measures to accomplish this goal. Our new Governor has advocated and established new processes to consolidate village and town government functions. A consolidation of services would lessen the tax burden on residents of the Village of Nassau while also giving us the opportunity to secure additional state financial support to reach this goal. Without prompt action, due to our limited Village tax base and the continual rise in the cost of services, our property taxes will continue to increase. With your support, I will pursue and advocate all possibilities to lighten the tax burden on residents of the Village. I am asking for your support on Election Day, Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the Village Hall. If you have any questions regarding my candidacy or record, please feel free to e-mail at rmjhowarth@aol.com or call 518-461-7223. Again, thank you for the opportunity to work hard for the residents of the Village of Nassau. ~Randy Howarth, Trustee

REPORT
FROM LEGISLATORS MARTIN REID, ALEX SHANNON AND JUDITH BRESELOR
As legislative representatives of District 4, including the towns of Schodack, Sand Lake and Nassau, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the February 8, 2011 legislative meeting. The Legislature has worked hard in recent years to keep costs under budget. During the 2010 fiscal year, we rejected nearly $1 million in requested spending, and reduced the amount of a property tax increase. We are proud to announce that during 2010, we reduced spending in the legislative departments by $130,000. The savings during 2010 follows a savings of $160,000 in 2009 in legislative offices. At the February 8 meeting, we moved the savings into a taxpayer protection fund used to protect taxpayers and county services. The savings during 2010 and 2009 is due to different efficiencies, including reduction of positions, leaving vacant positions open for longer periods, deferral of purchases and other steps. We are continuing with this approach during 2011 as we try to save taxpayer funds whenever possible and thank legislative staff for doing more with less. Along with the savings in legislative operations, the Legislature generated an important savings through an aggressive rebid of the county’s insurance contract. The new contract will save county taxpayers $900,000 over the next three years, and followed months of work on the issue. At the February 8 legislative meeting, legislators also approved a resolution that may allow the county to board-in inmates from Vermont at our county jail. The county jail was recently expanded at the order of the state and there is room that allows for prisoners to be boarded-in. This arrangement would generate needed revenues for the county, and help reduce the amount the county would pay to operate the facility. We expressed our condolences to the Miller family of Sand Lake, who experienced the loss of two family members last year. Arthur Miller, who founded the Sand Lake Ambulance and was a lifetime member of the West Sand Lake Fire Department, passed away last year. A short time later, his son Edmund Miller, a longtime Sheriff’s Department employee, was also stricken and passed away.

IS MY DOG DANGEROUS?
Both New York State and local law have restrictions on dangerous dogs. A dog that bites someone may be declared dangerous, but a dog that threatens or intimidates a person to the degree that a reasonable person feels that he is at risk of being bitten can also be declared dangerous. Tickets can be issued for local municipal violations. A court appearance will be necessary and fines may result. New York State has a dangerous dog hearing procedure that can result in a court appearance. If a dog is found to meet the criteria for a dangerous dog in New York State, the court may impose restrictions on how a dog is maintained as well as other serious penalties. Harboring a dangerous dog can result in lawsuits that can be very costly. It is important to maintain all dogs in a safe and secure manner to both protect the public and the dog. Dogs should never be allowed to run at large. What a dog is doing or what is happening to a dog when you are not there leaves too much risk for all concerned. Most dog bites to strangers occur as a person is entering the property either into the home or onto the property. If your dog barks at people, rushes at people or threatens in any way, this behavior can lead to more aggressive actions as time goes on. Electric fences work fine for some dogs, but are particularly dangerous when the dog, so confined, is exhibiting aggressive behavior. A stranger may be cautious when opening a fence gate, but if there is no such barrier he may find himself well into the dog’s property before he meets an aggressive dog. Every year there are bites to people in just such a scenario. How a dog acts with the family, people he knows, and other animals he is familiar with, is not indicative of the way he will behave in the presence of strangers. Many people are shocked when their dog is accused of aggressive or dangerous behavior, especially if they are not there to see it. Pets are members of our family and it is difficult sometimes to consider the fact that, beloved as they may be, we should still keep in mind that they are, in fact, animals. ~For questions, call Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer 477-8230

When the fire alarm or smoke detector goes off, we all know what to do - get out of the house and call 911. But do we know what to do when the CO detector goes off? Many of the people I have talked to about CO detector alarms do not seem to understand what they are to do. They tend to react in ways that are dangerous and could possibly be life threatening. Even some of the articles that I have read in magazines and other publications are misleading. The most common bits of misinformation that I have seen or heard are as follows: 1) Investigate to see if you can find where the CO is coming from. 2) Open your windows to ventilate your house to get rid of the CO. 3) Shut off all your appliances so you don’t generate any more CO. 4) Call your fuel supplier, they’ll tell you what do. None of these actions will help you if your CO alarm sounds off. All they will do is delay getting the help that you need. Get everyone, including your pets out of the building and call 911 from your cell phone or a neighbor’s house. They will dispatch your local fire department to investigate the source of the problem. CO is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that can make you sick and possibly kill you. Without a CO gas meter there is no way to know where the gas is coming from and how much CO gas is present in your house. If you ventilate your house, the fire department will have to shut all the windows and doors when they arrive to see if CO will build up again. Likewise, if you have shut off your appliances they will have to be restarted to find out if one of them is the culprit giving off CO. Finally, if you call your fuel supplier, they will tell you to get out of the house and call 911 and wait for the fire department to arrive. Don’t waste time - get everyone out and call 911. ~Capt. James F Rossé Sr. & Lt. Ann R. Rossé - South Schodack Fire Dept.

Volunteers must be 16 years or older and are required to register for the training with the New York Regional Coordinator, Hudson River Estuary Program, Suzanne Beyeler, PhD at FrogandToad@gw.dec.state.ny.us.

While we are working hard to earn this rewarding adventure in our scouting life, we need to look to our community to help us get there.

Senior Sarah Davis has been dancing for 16 years. She has recently stopped dancing to pursue her love for art; she says she loves painting and photography. Sarah is still taking pictures for her former Isabelle’s School of Dance Comp. team. In previous years, Davis had participated on Averill Park’s Track team, but she had to sit out this year due to her injured quad. In Sarah’s free time, she works at the Arlington House, volunteers through her church’s youth group, and is involved in the Wizard of Oz for Off-Broadway Players at APHS. Sarah was inducted into the National Honor Society this January for maintaining an overall grade point average of 91. In her senior year, Sarah is taking courses such as: Advance Placement European history, Advance Placement English, trigonometry, an independent photography study, senior portfolio, French 5, participation in government and economics. Sarah applied to RIT, St. Rose, SUNY Potsdam, SUNY New Paltz, Alfred, New Hampshire Institute of Art and Sage. Sarah plans on studying Photography and Art education in college. When asked who inspired her to be the person she is today, Sarah responded, “My parents, naturally; my father for his humor and my mother for her hard work ethic. My brother’s taught me a lot of stuff—like what not to do. I have a knack for observation and I see traits in people that I’d like to call my own.” Sarah also says that one of her role models is Audrey Hepburn because she was so classy.

AS FOLLOWERS OF JESUS
In worship on Sunday, February 27, 2011, the Stuyvesant and Nassau Reformed Churches the theme will be, those who journey “As Followers of Jesus” will never be alone. God has given us the gift of community and asks that we be accountable to one another. The sermon, based on 1 Corinthians 4:1-5, shares how Paul wanted those who followed Jesus to consider themselves servants of Christ and stewards of God’s “secret and hidden wisdom,” which was his offer of salvation to all people. Come, join us and come to more fully understand how in judging others we don’t consider ourselves better, as that is being too proud; and how being servants and stewards can serve us in our accountability to God and to one another. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church will begin worship at 9 a.m. in its Sanctuary, where Church Street meets Route 9J, one half mile south of the only traffic (caution) light in the hamlet of Stuyvesant. Sunday School boys and girls join their families during worship through the children’s sermon; then they engage in self-study activities. All are invited to worship. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the second level of its Church-School-building at 43 Church Street (Route 20,) one half mile east of the only traffic light in the village. Sunday School meets at 11 a.m. and ends, so parents can meet their children at 12 Noon, following worship. All young folk are welcome to Sunday School and everyone is welcome to worship.

Pet Adoption of the Week
ANGLER - is a one year old mixed breed male dog. He is part Portuguese Water dog so his black curly hair doesn’t shed. He is housebroken & crate trained. He will sit and knows not to take food (treats) until you say ‘take it’ (a good trick for those with little kids that carry cookies!) He enjoys being around and seeing people. He loves to play and enjoys running in the yard with children (even toddlers). He gets along with other dogs. He hasn’t been around cats so it’s unknown how he will act however he has never shown signs of aggression towards anything (person, animal or noises). He would love to be with a family that takes him along with them on trips. He loves car rides, camping and swimming.
If you would like to meet Angler to possibly adopt him, Contact : Sherry427@verizon.net or 518-393-0755

Navy Seaman Christopher S. Powell, a 2003 graduate of LaSalle Institute High School, Troy, recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Powell completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness. The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.
