2011 BRUNSWICK BASEBALL LEAGUE NEW ON-LINE REGISTRATION

Brunswick Baseball is currently registering players age 13-16 for the 2011 House League season. New for the 2011 season are the on-line registration process and an expanded 2011 House League season. Players may now be registered on-line by visiting our website and clicking on the Links Tab on our Home-page menu. The House League will be expanded in 2011 to include a 16 game schedule. Four additional games, inclusive of an end-of-season play-off tournament, will be added to the 2011 season. Our registration fee continues to be one of the lowest in the area. RENSSELAER COUNTY CLERK RETURNS RECORD SURPLUS TO COUNTY COFFERS

Rensselaer County Clerk Frank J. Merola reports that the Rensselaer County Clerk’s office has posted the largest revenue surplus to date, returning over $600,000.00 to county coffers for FY 2010. The Clerk’s office reported 2010 revenue of $2,598,155.36 against expenditures of $1,961,277.60 for a surplus totaling $637,000.00. County officials will use this surplus revenue to offset any potential increases in the county tax rate which has risen due to explosive increases in state mandated programs such as Medicaid. Mr. Merola is happy to report that this is the eleventh consecutive six figure surplus returned to the County, an achievement made even more impressive due to the economic downturn that has plagued the nation. “As a former businessman, the bottom line was finishing in the black every year. A company or a government that continually operates at a deficit will not be in business for very long.” Mr. Merola said, “I am extremely pleased that my department is able to return a sizable surplus to the county coffers despite the challenging economic times, and I am confident that we will continue to return surplus revenue for years to come.” In the past six years, the Clerk’s office has returned surplus revenues totaling over $2.2 million dollars to the general fund, a result of aggressive revenue enhancement programs such as the very successful RENEW RENSSELAER passport and motor vehicle program which has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of passports processed by the Rensselaer County Clerk’s office. Mr. Merola also credits an outstanding DMV department, and an aggressive DMV outreach program that has attracted significant auto dealer business to Rensselaer County and significantly increased DMV revenue. The photo ID program instituted by Mr. Merola in 2006 has proved to be extremely popular, with residents of all Capital Region counties coming to Rensselaer County to purchase a photo ID. “Like many other departments in County government we are doing more with less.” Mr. Merola said, “Our department spending has remained flat since 2008, a result of the tremendous effort by DMV and Record Room staffs, as well as upgrades in equipment that has allowed us to maintain present staff levels. Our courteous and efficient service has given our office the well deserved reputation as the most customer friendly Clerk’s office in the capital region. These next few years may prove challenging as a result of the economic downturn, but I am confident that we will continue to return needed money to the County for the benefit of our taxpayers.”

COUNTY SEEKS APPROVAL TO BOARD VERMONT PRISONERS

The Rensselaer County Legislature approved a resolution at the February 8 legislative meeting seeking the necessary state permission to allow the county to board in prisoners from Vermont at the newly-expanded county jail. If approved by the state, the legislation could lead to the county receiving revenues from boarding in the out of state inmates. And since Rensselaer County borders other states, the legislation could provide a framework for other states to send inmates to the county. The expansion of the county jail, which was ordered by New York State, has provided the county with adequate space to secure county prisoners and enough space for boarding-in prisoners from other municipalities. “This is a solid move by the county and if approved by the state, we will be in a position to bring in prisoners from other communities,” said Legislator Lester Goodermote. The county believes it has a real opportunity. One Vermont county with an over-crowding issue is currently transporting its prisoners to New Jersey. An agreement with Rensselaer

County would save the Vermont county significant funds just for transport costs. Along with neighboring states, other upstate counties are also experiencing issues with prisoner over-crowding, in part because of delays in the state taking state-ready inmates. “There seems to be a real opportunity for Rensselaer County to bring some out of county prisoners to here and possibly bring in some revenues to offset the cost of operating our jail,” said Legislator Alex Shannon. The resolution was approved unanimously and will now be sent to representatives of Rensselaer County in the State Legislature for review and consideration.

LEGISLATURE RECORDS SAVINGS OF $130,000 IN 2010

A resolution approved at the February 8, 2011 meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature records a savings of nearly $130,000, thanks to cost-cutting and efficiencies during 2010, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid announced. The savings of $129,200 by the Legislature during the 2010 fiscal year follows savings of $160,000 by the Legislature recorded in 2009. The savings from both years are moved into a tax stabilization fund used to protect taxpayers and needed county services. “The savings in 2010, along with 2009, show the Legislature’s commitment to reduce spending whenever possible to help weather the difficult economic times we now face,” said Reid. The savings in 2010 were derived from various personnel savings, including holding the line on raises, keeping vacant staff positions unfilled and holding off on purchases. The savings during the past two years in the County Legislature offices come as the Legislature generated a savings of nearly $900,000 over the next three years through a rebid of the county’s insurance contract. Thanks to the rebid by the Legislature, which oversees the county insurance policy, the county now pays less for insurance than the county did in the early 1990s. “We recognize the need to continue with effective fiscally conservative policies in 2011 and do more with less. This approach is generating positive results, and this is good news for taxpayers,” said Vice Chairman of the Legislature Phil Danaher. “Moving this money into the tax stabilization fund helps during budget time, because we have an ability to reduce tax increases and protect needed services,” added Majority Leader Ken Herrington. The resolution recording the $130,000 in savings by the Legislature in 2010 and moving the funds into the tax stability fund was approved at the Feb. 8 meeting.

ROAST BEEF DINNER FUNDRAISER

The Rensselaer County 4-H Teen Exchange will be holding a Roast Beef Dinner fundraiser at the Pittstown United Methodist Church, 45 Old Route 7 in Pittstown on Saturday, February 12th, serving from 4 to 6:00 PM. If reservations are made Adults (12yrs and older) are $9, Children (5 to 11 yrs) are $5 and children 4 yrs and under are free. Dinners at the door without reservations will be $10 for adults and $6 for children. Family-style dinner will be served to include roast beef, green beans, potatoes, roll, harvard beets and homemade dessert. Reservations are recommended by calling 663-5220. All proceeds will go toward support of the Rensselaer County 4H Interstate Exchange. This 4-H group is made up of 16 Rensselaer County Teens who will be hosting 4-H Teens from Barron County, Wisconsin this summer and will be traveling to Barron County in the summer of 2012. The goal of the 4-H Interstate Exchange is to provide a cultural educational program which enables participants to experience the many differences and similarities in our own United States. Many youth develop life long friendships and connections that enhance their quality of life. NEW STATE LAW ALLOWS FOR LIFETIME LICENSE TRANSFERS

AVERILL PARK ROAD RUNNERS YOUTH CLUB IS NOW TAKING REGISTRATIONS

The Averill Park Road Runners Youth Club is now taking registrations for the 2011 Track & Field Season. The club is open to anyone ages 7-14 who likes to run, jump, throw and most of all, have FUN! (You do not have to be a resident of the Averill Park School District.) Kids can choose from many events including sprints, distance running, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, turbo javelin and discus. Practices will be held Monday & Thursday evenings at the Averill Park High School, with several meets throughout the season. The season will run from April 25th through June and finish with the Junior Olympics. Registration is now available on our website at www.aproadrunners.com. The registration fee is only $40, plus uniform if needed. A $15.00 late fee will be added on April 1st. There is a $10 sibling discount. Membership in the United States Track and Field Association ($20) is also required to participate and provides insurance coverage. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced a new state law that allows for the one-time transfer of lifetime hunting, fishing, and trapping licenses under certain circumstances. Previously, lifetime licenses could not be transferred to another individual, regardless of the situation. Under the new law, lifetime sporting licenses may be transferred to a qualifying relative if the lifetime license holder passes away within one year of purchase of the license or if the license holder passes away while in active United States military duty during a time of war. “Hunters, anglers, and trappers take their pursuits very seriously,” said Acting Commissioner Joseph Martens, and “this is a way for them to pass on a family tradition.” The new law became effective January 15, 2011 and stipulates that lifetime licenses may be transferred if the person to whom the license was issued dies within one year of the issuance of the license, the person to whom the license is to be transferred is a legal New York State resident and would otherwise be eligible to purchase the license, and the person to whom the license is to be transferred is a parent, sibling, child or spouse of the license holder. Application for transfer of the lifetime license must be made within three years of the issuance of the license, except in the case of lifetime license holders that die while serving in the active United States military, naval, or air services during a period of war. Lifetime license transfer requests must be made by the personal representative of the decedent’s estate. Due to the effective date of the new law, for non-military-related transfer requests, lifetime licenses must have been issued on or after January 15, 2008, with a three month grace period for transfer applications. December 30, 2010—Hearts Herd Animal Sanctuary, Buskirk and Adopt-A-Pet Clinic INC., Troy, recently has joined other animal welfare organizations in the area that list their homeless pets on Petfinder.com, the oldest and largest database of adoptable animals on the Internet. The site currently has over 3324,700 homeless pets listed, and it is updated continuously. More than 13,500 animal welfare organizations in the U.S., Canada, and other countries post their pets on the site. HeartsHerd Animal Sanctuary, Buskirk and Adopt-A-Pet Clinic INC., Troy pets may be viewed at http://www.petfinder.com/ shelters/NY1020.html. A potential adopter enters search criteria for the kind of pet he or she wants, and a list is returned that ranks the pets in proximity to the Zip code entered. Adoptions are handled by the animal placement group where the pet is housed, and each group has its own policies. Petfinder.com was created in early 1996 as a grassroots project by Jared and Betsy Saul to end the euthanasia of adoptable pets. Since its inception, the site has facilitated approximately 20 million adoptions, making it the most life-saving initiative in animal welfare.

CENTER BRUNS. UMC ANNOUNCES COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID GRANT

The Finance Committee of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church announced that it will award $1000 to a student to be selected from the Tamarac High School Class of 2011. The money may be used for any type of expenses related to further education. Students do not have to belong to this Church or any other church or religion to be eligible for this award. Interested students must apply for this award no later than April 1, 2011. Application forms can be obtained from the school’s guidance department or directly from the Church. The Finance Committee will also accept recommendations from members of the Brittonkill School District community who are not family members of the student being recommended. This award is given in memory of Harold and Mabel Keyes, whose last will and testament created the trust that provides the funding for it. Harold and Mabel were prominent members of the Center Brunswick United Methodist Church for many years. Mabel taught in the Brunswick schools that preceded Tamarac, and continued teaching Sunday School for many years after she retired. Through this award, her love of helping young people learn and grow will continue to reach the youth of our community. KIDS FOR KINDNESS CLUB AT HOPE 7 GIVES TO HANNAH’S HOPE FUND

Hope 7 Community Center’s Afterschool Program’s Kids for Kindness Klub donated $284 to Hannah’s Hope Fund. On Tuesday, January 25, 2011, Hannah Sames, her mom, Lori and sister came to Hope 7 Community Center in Troy to meet the kids from Hope 7’s afterschool program and collect their donation. The Kids for Kindness Klub is a philanthropic group of Hope 7 kids that work together during the afterschool program to do good deeds for organizations and fundraisers in their local community as well as around the world. The Kids for Kindness Klub voted and decided that this year’s money raised in their annual holiday craft sale would go to Hannah’s Hope Fund. A very special handmade snowman was made for and presented to Hannah along with the donation from Hope 7. The mission of Hannah’s Hope Fund is to raise funding for research to find treatment and a cure for Giant Axonal Neuropathy (GAN). This is a rare genetic disorder that slowly takes away one’s ability to walk, use one’s hands, speak, swallow and is terminal. The staff and the children at Hope 7 Community Center truly enjoyed giving to Hannah’s Hope Fund.

MATERIALS NEEDED FOR WIZARD OF OZ SCHOOL PRODUCTION

The time is getting closer to the mega-production of Wizard of Oz for the Off-Broadway Players! The cast and crew are getting geared up with learning all the songs, dances, and lines. Anna Scherer, who goes to the elementary schools and teaches the songs to the munchkins, and who is also in the chorus, spoke to me about how the kids were doing. “They are great workers! They are very diligent and determined,” Scherer says. “They’re so excited to put the show on!” Matt McKeeby, the show’s head director, told me how the set, costumes, and tech designs were coming along. “We have great designs and big ideas, but we could really use more materials. So please, if anyone has these materials please help!” Some materials the show needs are blue or pink foam, insulation panels, flexible PVC pipes in small sizes (One inch or less), latex paint, and luan plywood (One quarter inch). AVERILL PARK SADD CHAPTER RECIEVES GRANT!

First Niagara Bank and the organizers of Sean’s Run have awarded a $500 grant to the Averill Park SADD Chapter. The grant will be used to fund Battle of the Belts, a fun and fast moving activity designed by the Sean’s Run Organizing Committee to increase teens’ use of seatbelts as well as other drug and alcohol prevention programs such as Red Ribbon, Great American Smoke Out, Prom Promise, Domestic Violence Awareness and Project Success. Sean’s Run and the grants program was established in response to the tragic death of Sean Patrick French, the 17-year old Chatham High School junior, honor roll student, community volunteer and recordsetting athlete who was killed on January 1, 2002, as a passenger in a drunk-driving car crash. This year’s annual community run/walk is being held at Chatham High School on Sunday, May 1st. As grant recipients, the Averill Park SADD chapter will be participating in the walk/run.

On Saturday, February 26th, the Friends of Cherry Plain State Park (FCP), is hosting Winterlude, an outdoor Winter fun-day. The event will be based at the Cherry Plain State Park entrance on Miller Road from 10 AM-3 PM . There will be a bonfire, hot chocolate, hot dogs, and marshmallows for roasting. Depending on weather and interest, FCP will host snowshoe hikes, crosscountry ski treks, or simply a good long walk. An animal tracking and nature observation event will be featured. Applications must be submitted to the City Assessors’ office. “In my State of the City recently, I was proud to announce that since 2005, my administration has kept the city tax rate stable, with an average increase of 1.4 percent. However, costs for everyone – including cities – are still rising and we’re all being forced to do more with less,” said Mayor Tutunjian. “These property tax exemptions are made available to seniors, disabled veterans, and many others to make your property or school tax obligations more manageable.” One exemption offered is the “Basic STAR” and open to all homeowners. “STAR” stands for School Tax Relief”, as the savings reduce only the “school” portion of the tax bill. STAR is unique to other exemptions as the State reimburses the school districts for these homeowner savings. To qualify, the property being applied for must be a one-, twoor three-family home and must be the primary or legal residence of at least one of the owners. Additionally, “Enhanced STAR” applicants must supply age and income verification, as all owners must turn age 65 by December 31st of this year, even if their birthday is after March 1st. There is also the “Senior-aged STAR” exemption, which provides savings for lower-income seniors. Applicants must submit their latest tax return or proof of income for both and both the Enhanced and Senior-aged must be renewed annually. Another exemption available is the “Alternative Veterans’” for those men and women that have served during wartime. Additional savings are allowed for those who served in a combat zone and even more savings are allowed for those with a serviceconnected disability rating. Un-remarried surviving spouses of veterans may retain the benefit. A copy of discharge papers will be required with the application. There are other exemptions available, including but not limited to, savings for Cold War Veterans, Persons with Disabilities, and Limited Income Exemption. News Release: HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION RAISES $8,172 FOR KIDS AT REGIONAL HOSPITALS

Troy, NY (February 3, 2011): Thanks to the generosity of members from three regional credit unions, the 2010 Credit Union Care for Kids Campaign raised $8,172 to benefit pediatric programs at four area hospitals: Glens Falls Hospital, Saratoga Care, Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital (Schenectady) and Seton Health/St. Mary’s Hospital (Troy). Credit Union Care for Kids is a statewide community involvement program of the Credit Union Association of New York, Inc. (CUANY) and its goal is to raise money for children’s hospitals and pediatric units throughout New York State. The campaign is in keeping with the credit union movement’s philosophy of “people helping people.” The donations to the healthcare organizations will help support the following pediatric services: • Glens Falls Hospital funds will be used to purchase DVD players, a Nintendo® Wii™ and Nintendo® Wii™ games for the children to enjoy while in the hospital. • Saratoga Care’s proceeds will be used toward pediatric care at the hospital’s free clinic scheduled to open in 2013. • Sunnyview Rehabilitation Hospital’s support will be used to purchase a pediatric AED (automated external defibrillator) at the hospital’s Schenectady office. • Seton Health/St. Mary’s Hospital’s donation will be used for Seton Health’s newly relocated Clifton Park Pediatric Center. The Center will purchase educational toys and activities for the waiting rooms that will engage children and their parents in thoughtful and hands on play. Credit unions from the Southern Chapter of the Adirondack District of the CUANY, Inc. who raised funds for the 2010 campaign include: Hudson River Community Credit Union; Saratoga’s Community Federal Credit Union; and TCT Federal Credit Union. Fundraising was conducted throughout the year and included selling stuffed animals, candy bars, mugs, hats, raffle drawings, holiday CDs, lobby coin drops and business donations. AMPHIBIAN MONITORING TRAINING TO BE HELD AT GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK

Are you interested in helping protect frogs and toads? The North American Amphibian Monitoring Program (NAAMP), an effort coordinated by the U.S. Geological Survey and a network of regional coordinators, will lead a training session for volunteers to collect data on frogs and toads during the spring and summer. This free training will be held on Wednesday, March 2, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the Shaver Pond Nature Center at 194 Shaver Pond Road in Grafton Lakes State Park. Amphibian populations are declining and long-term monitoring helps scientists determine steps to protect them. Volunteers drive a pre-determined route after sunset 4 times during the spring and summer, and listen for calling frogs and toads. There are 10 stops per route, and volunteers listen for 5 minutes at each stop, record their data online and send it to the state coordinator. Volunteers must be 16 years or older and are required to register for the training with the New York Regional Coordinator, Hudson River Estuary Program, Suzanne Beyeler, PhD at FrogandToad@gw.dec.state.ny.us.

NATIONAL GRID URGES CUSTOMERS TO CLEAR ICE AND SNOW

Build Up, Falling Ice and Snow Can Lead to Damaged Natural Gas Equipment and Elevated Co Levels There may be a lull in the round of storms that plagued the northeast from late December until early February, but dangerous remnants of those storms remain. Many roofs are still laden with ice and snow and the mounds of snow created from plowing, shoveling and snow blowing have shown little sign of melting. This is why National Grid continues to urge everyone to take precautions to avoid the potential hazards these conditions present. Ice and Snow Build Up Poses Risk to Gas Equipment: The build up of ice and snow around or over natural gas meters, regulators, pipes and vents for natural gas appliances can pose a serious safety risk. Ice and snow falling from a roof can damage gas meters or service connections to customers’ homes or businesses, resulting in potential gas leaks. Home and business owners should see that snow and ice build-up is properly removed to prevent damage to this equipment. Anyone detecting the odor of natural gas should call National Grid. If the odor is present inside your building, leave the premises immediately and call from outside or a neighboring building. Snow removal equipment operators should also be aware of the presence of natural gas equipment and avoid coming in contact with meters or piling snow around vents mounted on the outside of buildings. Ice and snow blocking vents have the potential to cause carbon monoxide (CO) to back up into a building, resulting in carbon monoxide poisoning to those inside. National Grid advises natural gas customers to closely inspect areas around and over gas meters, service hook-ups and vents, for ice and snow. Whenever possible, use a broom to remove accumulated ice and snow from around natural gas equipment. Customers are also encouraged to test CO detectors in the home to ensure that they are in working order. “CABIN FEVER PARTY”

The Women’s Aux. of the American Legion #1489 will host a “Cabin Fever Party” with music by, Sound Spectrum, on Satur day, March 5th, from 7PM to 11PM. Cost is $7 for advance tickets and $10 at the door - includes draft beer, soda and light snacks (you may also bring your own snacks); 50/50 drawing.
