FAMILY FUN DAY TO BENEFIT BRUNSWICK BOY WITH CANCER The Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Benevolent Association will hold a Family Fun Day fundraiser in support of 10-year-old Alexander Holcomb, a fifth grader at Poestenkill Elementary School, who was recently diagnosed with Lymphoma.

The event will be held on Sunday, June 12, 2011, from 2:00 – 6:00 PM, at the Brunswick Elk’s Lodge; 665 Brunswick Road in Troy. Ticket prices: Adults/ $15, Children ages 7-15/$5, Children under age 7/Free and Family of 5 or more /$40. JUNE PROGRAM SCHEDULED FOR BRUNSWICK HISTORICAL SOCIETY The program for June hosted by the Brunswick Historical Society will be a field trip to historic Cherry Hill.

The trip will take place on June 4th. Members are asked to gather at the Society’s headquarters at 12noon. Car pooling will be available. Reservations should be made early. There is room for only about 10 to 15 people. Admission is $3 per person. Members should also be aware that this tour involves two flights of stairs. Cherry Hill is a newly renovated historic home located at 523 1/2 South Pearl Street in Albany.

COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA SPRING CONCERT

SUPPORT THE YWCA - 2011 FREIHOFER’S COMMUNITY WALK

Lots of enjoyment is in store for all who attend the Averill Park Community Orchestra concert on Sunday, June 12. The musical event will take place at the Algonquin Middle School at 4:00 PM that afternoon. Members in the orchestra are students and adults from the local and surrounding areas. There will be music to delight everyone, including classical selections by Handel, Brahms, Berlioz, and Rimsky-Korsakoff. Additionally, the orchestra will perform Leroy Anderson’s Syncopated Clock and medleys from The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz. Other contemporary pieces will have you tapping your toes to a march, singing along to rain songs, being transported into a storm and also to the Old West. As usual there is no admission fee, however, the group is very grateful for any donations towards the purchase of new music and other expenses. The YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc. is recruiting volunteers to participate in the 23rd annual Freihofer’s Community Walk on Saturday, June 4, at 12:30 p.m.

The event, which begins and ends outside the New York State Museum, provides an opportunity for regional non-profit organizations to raise funds through walk pledges.

The YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc. depends on the Community Walk as a major fundraiser. Last year, 10 YWCA walkers raised over $500.

Funds raised at this year’s event will help supplement our weekly community meal, serving between 60 and 90 individuals and families and food pantry serving approximately 100 families per month.

Walkers must check in at the Community Walk registration area on the Concourse Level of the Empire State Plaza starting at 10 a.m. T-shirts will be given to the first 1,000 walkers and participants will receive a box of Freihofer’s chocolate chip cookies. Free event parking is available at the East Garage located on the corner of Eagle Street and Madison Avenue.

Penny Hill has been named associate dean for Hudson Valley Community College’s Training and Education Center for Semiconductor Manufacturing and Alternative and Renewable Technologies (TEC-SMART) facility in Malta. Hill’s prior experience is in the field of workforce development with a focus on training for energy efficiency and green jobs.

In this position, Hill will provide leadership in the development of new industry partnerships and the advancement of cuttingedge initiatives in creating the workforce of the future.

Hill joins Hudson Valley from the Workforce Development Institute in Troy where, as regional director, she led training and education programs in a wide variety of areas, including manufacturing, renewable energy and energy efficiency. She convened the regional chapter of the Apollo Alliance to promote clean energy and good jobs, and participated in a regional Green Team to build community awareness about energy efficiency measures and the Green Jobs Green New York campaign.

A business development consultant, she managed her own small business prior to her work at the WDI. Hill is an alumna of Hudson Valley and earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University at Albany and a master’s of business administration with a concentration in marketing from The Sage Colleges.

TEC-SMART, completed in January 2010 as a joint initiative of Hudson Valley and NYSERDA, features more than a dozen stateof-the art classrooms and laboratories where students are trained in semiconductor manufacturing and green technologies, including photovoltaics, wind energy, geothermal, alternative fuels and home energy efficiency. Students also can be trained in semiconductor manufacturing with the goal of gaining employment at GLOBALFOUNDRIES. TEC-SMART is located in NYSERDA’s Saratoga Technology + Energy Park® (STEP®).

County residents and county businesses can obtain a copy of the 2011 Directory for free by contacting the legislative offices.

The County Officials and Services Directory includes useful information about federal, state and local government offices serving the county, contact information for elected officials, community organizations and civic groups. Annually, nearly 4,000 copies of the directory, which is viewed as the best and most comprehensive guide to the county, are sent out in the region or downloaded from the legislative website.

“For anyone wanting to learn more about the many things that make Rensselaer County such a great place to live and work, the new 2011 Officials and Services Directory is an excellent place to start,” said Reid.

Megan M. Derby, Class of 2011, of Cropseyville; Derby was presented with the Peter A. Silverhart ’79 Memorial Award at Moving-Up Day ceremonies held recently at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. She is majoring in Psychology.

The Peter A. Silverhart ’79 Memorial Award is given to the senior whose originality, significance and scholarship in his or her senior project demonstrates excellence and who will continue in a graduate program in psychology. Derby graduated from Berlin Jr-Sr High School in Berlin.

Kelsey A. Rebehn, Class of 2011, of Averill Park; Rebehn was presented with the Dr. F. W. Delmage Pre-Medical Prize at Moving-Up Day ceremonies held recently at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. She is majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. The Dr. F.W. Delmage Pre-Medical Prize is given annually to the senior who is the top pre-medical student and who has been accepted to an accredited medical school.

Dr. Delmage was a distinguished North Country physician.

Rebehn graduated from Averill Park High School in Averill Park.

EXTENSION SEEKS LOCAL GARDENS FOR GARDEN TOUR Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County is seeking interesting gardens for the Rensselaer County Garden Tour.

The tour will take place the evening of June 30. Gardens are needed on the north side of Troy, Lansingburgh, Pleasantdale, Speigletown, Melrose and adjoining areas. Small and large gardens may be included. Gardens should reflect the creativity and spirit of the owners and do not need to be professionally landscaped. Piano virtuoso Walter Hautzig will be performing a benefit concert for the Nassau Synagogue and Jewish Community Center on Sunday, June 19th, at 2 p.m. at the Spencertown Academy Arts Center. The program on June 19th will include compositions by Mozart, Schubert and Chopin.

Walter Hautzig studied at the Vienna State Academy, the Jerusalem Conservatory, the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and with the late Artur Schnabel in New York City.

He has toured in more than fifty countries on four continents and has appeared in sold-out houses in hundreds of cities as a soloist with leading orchestras. Walter Hautzig currently resides in New York City and Spencertown and has been a longtime member of the Nassau Synagogue.

“Hart’s Tavern” is loosely based on Shakespeare’s “Two Gentlemen of Verona”.

The passion the young lovers feel for each other is sorely tested by infidelity, betrayal and misuse of power. Disguises and deceptions result in comic mix-ups.
