COMMITTEE TO ELECT RON CAMPANO RENSSELAER COUNTY SHERIFF After much consideration, recently retired New York State Trooper Ronald “Ron” J. Campano is announcing his intentions to run for the November 08, 2011 Rensselaer County Sheriff’s election.

At the current age of 60 years old, Campano was forced into retirement last December from his job as a Senior Investigator with more than 37 years with the New York State Police. Currently New York law mandates that all troopers retire by the age of 60.

Considering himself a viable candidate, Mr. Campano has put together an “exploratory committee” comprised of community leaders, members of law enforcement, close friends and advisors to take a look at the most practical approach to a successful campaign. Mr. Campano is currently registered as an Independent.

Campano believes that he can introduce new policy and procedure within the Sheriff’s department that will save Rensselaer County taxpayers millions of dollars over time.

Vowing to lead by example, Campano insists that when he is elected to the Sheriff’s position that he will “give back the first two months of his annual salary” to the hard working taxpayers of Rensselaer County.

GLIKES NAMED TO DEAN’S LIST AT AIC Erin Glikes of Troy has been named to the Spring 2011 Dean’s List at American International College in Springfield, Mass. Glikes was one of more than 430 AIC students recognized for their academic achievements.

Dean’s List students are fulltime students, with a grade point average between 3.3 and 4.0 for the semester.

Glikes is a Junior majoring in Nursing.

MISS UNCLE SAM 2011 It’s that time of year again, when the Uncle Sam Parade Committee is accepting applications from young ladies from Rensselaer County for the Miss Uncle Sam Pageant. The pageant this year is August 20, 2011 at St. Augustine Church Hall. Rehearsal is Friday, 8/19/11, at 6:00pm.

There will be a winner and 2 runners-up in each age division.

Contestants must be a resident of Rensselaer County, never been married and never had a child. The Little Miss category is age 4-6; Young Miss, ages 7-9; Pre-Teen Miss, ages 10-12; Teen Miss, ages 13-15; and Miss Uncle Sam, ages 16-18. Age is determined day of pageant.

A new age category is added this year, Tiny Miss, age 2-3.

Contestants will be escorted on stage by a parent. Age is determined day of pageant.

Categories include competitions based on poise, personality and appearance. An optional Miss Photogenic category is judged on photos submitted by the contestants.

Winners will receive crowns, banners, and trophies. Runnersup will receive special trophies. Every contestant will receive a trophy.

A gravestone conservation and cemetery preservation workshop will be held at the Taborton Cemetery of Zion’s United Church of Christ on Saturday, June 25th, from 9 am- 12 noon.

The free workshop is open to the public and will be held rain or shine. Joseph Ferrannini of Grave Stone Matters in Hoosick Falls, NY, will lead the workshop and provide guidance and resources for the conservation and repair of gravestones.

Ferrannini has restored several gravestones at the Sand Lake Union Cemetery under the auspices of the Town of Sand Lake Bicentennial Planning Committee. He will demonstrate on several gravestones in the church cemetery, teaching attendees how to care for gravestones under their own care wherever they may be located.

The Taborton Cemetery is located behind Zion’s United Church of Christ, 741 Taborton Road, Sand Lake, NY. The church is 3.2 miles east of the intersection of Routes 66 and 43 (Gulf and Cumberland Farms).

...still a few openings for KRISTINE GRECO FUNDRAISER This is my 19 year old sister Kristine.

In 2009, she was diagnosed with a form of childhood brain cancer called Anaplastic Medulloblastoma.

Approximately 350 children in the United States are diagnosed each year with this awful disease. Kristine fought hard against this very aggressive cancer.

Kristine underwent extensive brain surgery and a course of grueling treatments including chemotherapy and radiation. Following a yearlong battle, Kristine graduated high school (with honors) and was on the path to a bright future. Recently, after being cancer free for about a year, a follow up MRI showed three large tumors in Kristine’s brain. Kristine was given a poor prognosis and little hope. Kristine and my family refuse to give up or lose hope. There are various treatment options available. On Saturday, June 18th, Team Kristine will be holding a benefit celebrating life and honoring this young woman who continues to fight every day. The benefit is being held at Lyon’s Lake from 1pm - 6pm and will be a day filled with fun for the entire family. Please come and show your support!

BOOK AND MOVIE GROUP OF THE BRUNSWICK COMMUNITY LIBRARY The Book and Movie group of the Brunswick Community Library meets at the Library on the third and fourth Fridays of each month at 12:30PM. The group first read a book, then sees the movie and compares the two. Our book and movie for the month of June is “The Last of the Mohicans”. We will meet on June 17th to discuss the book and on June 24th to see the movie. This story is about two young ladies traveling from Albany to join their father in the fort at Lake George. The book also discusses the French and Indian War of particular interest to us since in takes place in this area. We have a snack at our meetings and New members are always welcome.

Twelve gardens will be featured in Lansingburgh and Speigletown. This year’s gardens include compact town gardens hidden behind homes as well as larger gardens in suburban settings. This drive-it-yourself tour will provide homeowners with dozens of inspirational ideas.

Maps will be on sale for $7.00 per person and can be purchased from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. the day of the tour at the St. Augustine Church, 534 4th Avenue, Lansingburgh, NY 12182. The tour will be held rain or shine. Proceeds will benefit the Rensselaer County Master Gardener program.

The Dr. Jo Moccia Dignity for All Students Award has been established and will be given annually, beginning in June 2012, to that senior who has done the most during his/her time at Averill Park High School to promote the goals of the Dignity for All Students Act and to make our community a more peaceful and tolerant place.

Dr. Josephine “Jo” Moccia served the Averill Park community since 1987 when she began as District School Psychologist.

Throughout the years, she served as Director of Special Education, building Principal at George Washington School, Assistant Superintendent, and finally as Superintendent. Jo demonstrated unwavering devotion to the students of our community, particularly those with special needs.

The Board of Education for South Whidbey School District, Washington State, located on scenic Whidbey Island, recently conducted a nationwide search for a new superintendent.

After a strenuous vetting process, Dr. Moccia was unanimously selected as their first choice. She will begin to serve there as Superintendent July 1, 2011.

Contributions to the award may be made by sending a check, payable to APCSD, attn Ellen Caverly, 146 Gettle Road, Averill Park, NY 12018. Please note “Jo Moccia award” in the memo section of your check.

In June, 2010, New York State passed The Dignity for all Students Act which covers all people, including students, faculty, volunteers and visitors, from bias-harassment on school property based on factors including religion, race, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, national origin, disability, academic performance, or any other physical characteristic.

HOMETOWN NAZARETH: WHERE JESUS WAS A KID A summer family event called Hometown Nazareth will be hosted at Hope United Methodist Church, 566 Brunswick Rd., Troy, from August 1 to August 5. Families step back in time at Hometown Nazareth, exploring what it was like to live in the town where Jesus grew up. Kids and adults participate in a memorable Bible-times marketplace, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, dig into Bible-times snacks, visit Jesus’ mom, Mary, and collect Bible Memory Makers to remind them of God’s Word. Plus, everyone learns to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings. Each day concludes at Celebration—a time of upbeat worship that gets everyone involved. There were some 511 advanced degrees and certificates awarded by the UVM Graduate College and approximately 111 women and men took the oath of Hippocrates following the awarding of their M.D. degrees at ceremonies of the UVM College of Medicine.

JIMINO ANNOUNCES 2010 COUNTY AUDIT RESULTS Troy-Rensselaer Executive Kathleen M. Jimino recently reported the results of the County’s 2010 independent audit conducted by Drescher and Malecki LLP who found no material weaknesses in internal controls or accounting practices. Drescher and Malecki LLP also noted that the County has continued to improve its fiscal position even in the tough financial times. The County ended 2010 with a surplus of over $600,000, while also setting aside $3 million to pay for future increases in pension costs. The audit also recognized the improvement of the unencumbered fund balance, i.e. rainy day fund, which has grown to $9.7 million.“While I am pleased with these results and want to commend our County employees and department heads for their good stewardship of taxpayer dollars, I know we cannot rest on our laurels. I remain concerned about the continuation of the cost shifts and increases in state and federal mandates that jeopardize not only every program and service provided at the local level, but also the ability of the residents of New York to continue to be able for afford to live in New York. The State’s fiscal shell game has driven New York’s local taxes to the highest in the nation, and without true mandate relief by the state of the costs they force counties to pay, I fear all non mandated services such as the paving, plowing, and patrolling of our streets, as well as the services we provide to our seniors and veterans, will no longer be available as we will be forced to cut them so that we can continue to pay the State’s bills,” concluded Jimino.

CSEA HONORS TVHS SENIOR Tech Valley High Senior Joshua McDonald is the recipient of CSEA scholarship. McDonald, of Troy, received the union’s Community Service Award for his volunteer work at the Unity House of Troy.

He received a $1,000 scholarship award during Tech Valley High’s awards ceremony on Thursday.

McDonald is a member of TVHS’s inaugural graduating class and will walk across the stage to receive his diploma on June 18th on the University at Albany’s main campus in Albany.

He plans to attend Siena College in the fall where he will study computer sciences. writing through his 826 Valencia writing and tutoring labs for young people throughout America.

In addition, capital investments have saved taxpayer dollars, such as the purchase of a paver currently operated by town employees who pave roads at a significantly reduced cost compared to outside paving companies.

“My administration has worked aggressively to secure grant money to offset the tax burden,” added Herrington. “Grants helped provide solar panels for Town Hall, construct a new bridge and purchase new equipment.”

The Town received a $30,000 grant to provide a power study, which helped lead to a $187,000 grant to purchase solar panels for Town Hall. Once installed, the solar panels will cut the Town’s energy bill by 20% annually. The Town also secured a federal grant for $1.5 million to install a new bridge on White Church Road. The Herrington Administration has both literally and figuratively opened the doors to government. Town Hall opened in 2005 and measures such as a new personnel employee handbook and an updated comprehensive plan opened the governmental process to residents.

As Brunswick Town Supervisor, Herrington has put forward 11 budgets without raising taxes. “I am proud of my record and I want to continue my fiscally conservative efforts for the residents of Brunswick as we continue to provide new services, like the Farmer’s Market, while keeping taxes low.”

The criteria for the WPI Dean’s List differs from most other universities as WPI does not compute a grade point average (GPA). Instead, WPI defines the Dean’s List by the amount of work completed at the “A” level in courses and projects.
