THE BOOK AND MOVIE GROUP OF THE BRUNSWICK COMMUNITY LIBRARY The Book and Movie Group of the Brunswick Community Library meets at the Library on the third and fourth Fridays of each month at 12:30PM. The Group first reads a book, then sees the movie and compares the two.

Due to vacation schedules there will be ONE meeting only in the month of August. We will meet on the 19th to discuss and view the movie of “Secretariat”. This selection was made to coincide with the Races at Saratoga.

As legislative representatives of District 3, including the towns of Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke, we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the July 12, 2011 legislative meeting.

As we navigate a difficult national economy, holding the line on expenses is more important than ever. Through a comprehensive rebid of the county insurance policy, the Legislature was able to generate a savings of $900,000 over three years. We have also reduced the cost of operating the Legislature and worked to hold the line on other expenses.

At the July 12 meeting, legislators continued those efforts. We approved a vehicle use policy for county employees. We expect this new policy will expand oversight of county vehicles and ensure county vehicles are used properly and efficiently.

Legislators also continued review of a transition from paper to new and affordable technology. Research by some county lawmakers has indicated that electronic tablets like iPads can be purchased at less cost than relying on paper and copying. A decision on a switch is expected in the coming weeks.

We supported a resolution supporting efforts to expand testing for women with certain types of breast tissue, as early testing improves the chances of successful treatment. The proposal has been approved by the State Senate and is awaiting approval by the State Assembly.

We also asked state lawmakers to support a State Senate bill encouraging shared services and a second bill to improve welfare fraud detection. Lawmakers also supported a resolution seeking a review by the state of safety conditions on State Route 7 following serious accidents on the Hoosick section of the highway.

Legislators also approved resolutions for the repair and maintenance of county roads, along with purchase of a new wheel loader for the county Highway Department to help with road repair work.

TROY PUBLIC LIBRARY SEEKING CANDIDATES FOR BOARD OF TRUSTEES The Troy Public Library is looking for candidates for its Board of Trustees to fill one open position. “FEET & PAWS WALK” “Feet & Paws Walk” will be held on August 14th 2011, at the Cohoes Basin Pond and the walk starts at 7AM. Protect Wildlife in and near the Cohoes Basin Pond that runs pararell along 787 North & South bound through Cohoes. Each year, Beavers leave their Dam site in search of food and get run over by nearby passing cars. These incidents are a tragedy since nothing has been done to prevent this from occurring. The Pond gives home to many different species of wildlife and has become a wildlife preserve and attraction to many animals. We have requested from the City of Cohoes & State Agencies that a road sign and fence be installed along the pond to protect the wildlife in that area and speeding be reduced on the highway to prevent more accidents. The Pet Care Community Volunteers Started A National Program called “Feet & Paws Walk connecting people & pets across America” We are asking drivers to slow down for People, Pets & Smaller Animals that cross Americas Roadways each year. PVT. DENEKAR GRADUATES FROM BASIC TRAINING Army Pvt. Michael D. Denekar has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

He is the son of Eugenia and John Denekar of Troy.

Denekar graduated in 2011 from Tamarac Middle-High School, Troy.

CAREGIVERS’ ROLE in COMMUNICATION SKILLS The ability for a nation to create the workforce needed to compete in the global economy begins with infants and toddlers. Literacy and communication skills begin before a baby speaks her first word.

Babies are pre-wired to communicate and learn. They begin to communicate through crying, facial expressions and movement. Fancy curriculum or flash cards are not needed for the development of infant and toddler communication skills. What is needed are responsive adults.

Learning occurs through the relationship that the infant and toddler has with significant adults in their lives including parents and caregivers. By responding promptly to infants’ and toddlers’ attempts at communication, we teach them that they are important and encourages them to continue to find ways to engage and communicate with those around them. Caregivers have a tremendous affect on helping infants and toddlers learn language and communication skills which set the foundation for all future learning.

I had the opportunity to attend training and become a Certified Trainer with the Program for Infant and Toddler Care and learn the importance of caring relationships that support infants’ and toddlers’ development. An environment where parents and caregivers are supportive, positive and offer rich verbal stimulation is one where children will show advanced language and cognitive development.

St. Mary’s Hospital/Seton Health and Samaritan Hospital/ Northeast Health, as part of the Healthy Hearts joint initiative, will hold the next “Just Walk With a Doc” event featuring a one-mile community walk with a cardiologist, Saturday, Aug. 13, 8 - 10 a.m., Farmer’s Market, Riverfront Park, Troy.

Dr. Robert Benton, of Capital Cardiology, will offer a short educational talk on hypertension, and lead participants in the one-mile walk downtown. Participants will be able to ask medical questions in an informal, relaxed atmosphere.

The Just Walk With a Doc program is part of a national initiative designed to educate and encourage physical activity to improve health. Just 30 minutes of walking a day can reduce the risk of heart disease, improve blood pressure and blood sugar, elevate mood, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, cancer and diabetes. Additional walks are planned Saturdays, September 10, and October 8, from 8 - 10 a.m., at the Farmer’s Market in Troy. All events are open to the public free of charge.
