R. GONCH COMPLETES OFFICER SCHOOL, RECEIVES OFFICER’S COMMISSION Members of the New York Army National Guard training for future careers as military officers recently completed training.

The troops received their officer commission and gold bar rank of Second Lieutenant with the graduation of Class #56 of the Officer Candidate School August 20.

Commissioned as a new officer for the New York Army National Guard was Ryan Gonch from Troy, N.Y. Lieutenant Gonch will serve within the Adjutant General career field with the New York National Guard’s Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 258th Field Artillery in Jamaica.

The ceremony was held at Camp Niantic, in Niantic, Conn.

The National Guard training site is home of the 1st Battalion, 169th Leadership Regiment. The unit is the regional training institute, the coordinating headquarters for all Officer Candidate School (OCS) programs and training in the eight Northeastern states.

All Averill Park and Gardner Dickenson School 1st – 8th grade boys and girls are eligible to join APYB programs. The APYB FUNdamental Hoop Camp program runs every Saturday from November 5th, 2011 to February 11th, 2012. This program is a non-competitive, all play program with emphasis on instruction and fun. Sessions are 90 minutes and held in the AMS gyms. Cost for this program is still only $60 per child with a maximum of $90 per family. A Monday evening training will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 50 Leversee Road, Speigletown, starting on September 12th.

An afternoon training will be held on Mondays and Thursdays at the Rensselaer Public Library, 676 East Street in Rensselaer, starting on November 3rd.

Each training series will offer six three hour sessions. Those wishing to enroll would need to have a high school diploma or equivalent. To be matched one-on-one with a small group of adult learners who needs help with reading, writing and/or speaking English, the tutor would need to complete the Orientation/Introduction to Tutoring, the Basic Literacy Learning sessions and/or the English Language Learning sessions and the Successful Tutoring session. A $35 materials fee is requested and scholarships are available to those who qualify.

VANGUARD - ALBANY SYMPHONY’S MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS PROGRAM Vanguard, Albany Symphony is a volunteer organization that works to further the objectives of the Albany Symphony.

They do this through educational outreach as well as raising money for the orchestra. One of the education programs is the Musical Instruments Program, which collects “gently used” instruments to be donated to public schools. The instruments are for use by students in the school music program who are not able to provide their own instruments. There is a small budget for instrument repairs, but we hope that most will be usable when received.

This is the beginning of a new school year, and we ask you to please look in your attic, basement or storage closets for musical instruments that your children may have left behind when they moved to their own homes. Or perhaps you played an instrument when you were younger and no longer wish to play. The Behavioral Health Services at Samaritan Hospital, in observance of National Depression Screening Day, October 6, will offer free depression screenings to the community, Thursday, Oct. 6, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m., at the hospital located at 2215 Burdett Ave., Troy.

Participants will be screened for a range of common mental health problems which are often undiagnosed, including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and mood disorders. All screenings will be anonymous and confidential.

“Anyone can develop depression, regardless of age, race, sex, occupation or social status,” says Scarlet Clement, assistant vice president of Behavioral Health Services at Samaritan Hospital. “Unfortunately, many people who are clinically depressed are never diagnosed and never receive the help they need. We encourage anyone who may be experiencing problems to come get screened, become educated on what warning signs to look for, and get some information and help on how to cope.”

The screenings are open to the public, free of charge.

Information will be available on other mental health topics, such as managing stress, and recognizing the symptoms of various mental health disorders. The vote upon such proposition shall be by machine or absentee ballot. HUDSON RIVER COMMUNITY CREDIT UNION HOLDS BLOOD DRIVE AT THEIR TROY BRANCH Troy, NY (September 20): Hudson River Community Credit Union (HRCCU) and the American Red Cross held a blood drive on Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the HRCCU Troy branch, 40 Leversee Rd., Troy, NY. Donations made from this drive will assist area blood banks.

The American Red Cross collected 28 units of blood during the event which in turn can be used for 84 different patients in the Capital Region. Each unit of blood is separated into three components (red blood cells, plasma and platelets) that are used for different procedures.

Hudson River Community Credit Union Regional Branch Manager Jen Reiszel thanks the employees, friends and family of HRCCU as well as the many community members for participating in this event. These donations are especially important because of recent events stemming from Hurricane Irene. Area hospitals are sometimes forced to import blood from out of state when supplies are low.

As legislative representatives of District 3, including the towns of Brunswick, Pittstown and Schaghticoke we are happy to provide residents with an update on actions taken at the September 14, 2011 legislative meeting.

The legislative meeting followed the events of Hurricane Irene, which caused significant damage throughout Rensselaer County.

The heavy storms brought by the hurricane caused significant flooding, wind damage, damage to roads and buildings and major power outages across the county.

The storm also damaged agricultural properties and caused a temporary shut-down of State Route 2 near Brunswick after the road surface was damaged. A number of small businesses and community and athletic fields and areas were also flooded during the storm.

As with many other emergencies, many residents came to the aid of those hurt by the storm.

Hurricane Irene prompted a great response from local elected officials, emergency responders, public works employees, and residents who came to the aid of those in distress. We appreciate the work by so many in providing aid following the storm, including a number who worked around the clock.

Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid also organized a meeting of local officials in the days following the storm to discuss relief and recovery efforts, including federal disaster assistance. The meeting was attended by Congressman Chris Gibson, State Senator Roy McDonald and Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin and local officials were updated about recovery efforts.

Property owners seeking disaster relief assistance can call the legislative office at 270-2880. Information regarding disaster relief assistance can also be found at the county website, www.rensco.com.

At the September 14 legislative meeting, legislators voted to make an important charter change that corrects some potentially confusing language that could have affected budget stability.

Legislators also renewed a request for greater control over certain state mandates in an effort to reduce spending.

The Legislature also approved resolutions for the repair and improvement of county roads. We also recognized the selection of Herrington Farms, operated by Ken and Phil Herrington, for their selection by the Rensselaer County Soil and Water Management District as the 2010 Conservation Farm of the Year.

The next meeting of the Rensselaer County Legislature is Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
