The author’s real-life experience in the mid-60’s the basis for the play, when she worked as a secretary for Francis Biddle at his home in Washington, D.C. Judge Biddle had been Attorney General under Franklin Roosevelt. After the war, President Truman named him Chief Judge of the Tribunal at Nuremberg. Navy Seaman Thomas J. Skopayko, son of Wanda L. Skopayko of Troy, N. Y., recently completed U.S. Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill. During the eight-week program, Skopayko completed a variety of training which included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety. An emphasis was also placed on physical fitness.

The capstone event of boot camp is “Battle Stations”. This exercise gives recruits the skills and confidence they need to succeed in the fleet. “Battle Stations” is designed to galvanize the basic warrior attributes of sacrifice, dedication, teamwork and endurance in each recruit through the practical application of basic Navy skills and the core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment. Its distinctly ‘’Navy’’ flavor was designed to take into account what it means to be a Sailor.

CREATING YOUR RESUME USING MICROSOFT WORD The Troy Public Library ’s Lansingburgh Branch, in conjunction with the Jessica Litwin from Hudson Valley Community College’s Center for Careers and Employment, will offer a two-part computer workshop entitled, “Creating Your Resume Using Microsoft Word.” These one-hour workshops will be held on Saturday, October 15th at 1PM; and on Saturday, October 22nd, at 1PM at the Troy Public Library ’s Lansingburgh Branch.

The first workshop will cover how to utilize Microsoft Word and its features when creating a resume. The second workshop will involve creating your resume and tips on how to make it look professional.

This workshop is funded by a coordinated outreach grant from the Upper Hudson Library System.

HIGHLIGHT ACTING TROUPE PRESENTS ARSENIC AND OLD LACE The Highlight Acting Troupe will be presenting Arsenic and Old Lace written by Joseph Kesselring and directed by Ron LeVan. Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedy about the sweet old Brewster sisters (Lucy Breyer, Georgia Visconti), who are beloved in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their many charitable acts.

One charity which the ladies don’t advertise is their ongoing effort to permit lonely bachelors to die with smiles on their faces—by serving said bachelors elderberry wine spiked with arsenic. When the sisters’ drama-critic nephew Mortimer (A.J. Printsky) stumbles onto their secret, he is understandably put out—especially since he has just become engaged to Elaine Harper (Rebecca Hoffay). Given the homicidal tendencies of his aunts, the sinister activities of his escaped-convict older brother Jonathan (Mark Simpson) and the disruptive behavior of younger brother Teddy (Mark Strock)—who is convinced that he’s really Theodore Roosevelt, and runs around the house yelling “CHAAAAARGGGE”- he is hesitant to marry Elaine.

Further complications ensue when the murderous Jonathan Brewster arrives home, with his snivelling accomplice Dr. Einstein (Alan Angelo) in tow. When Jonathan learns that his darling aunts have killed twelve men, he is incensed—they’re challenging his own record of murders.

BRUNSWICK HOG CHAPTER TOY FOR TOTS RUN On Sunday, November 6th, the Brunswick Harley Owners Group (HOG) will hold its annual Toys for Tots Benefit Ride to raise funds and gather toys for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Program. Registration begins at 11 AM at Brunswick Harley Davidson, 1130 Hoosick Rd., Troy, NY. A guided parade of bikes, with police escort will take place at Noon. The parade will travel down routes 7 and 142, through Lansingburgh, Waterford, Crescent, Halfmoon, Niskayuna, Schenectady and end up at the Marine Recruiting Station at the Schenectady County Airport. Last year, excellent weather and an overwhelming biker response, resulted in over 400 bikes participating in the event. Last year’s parade was over 3 miles long. In addition to donating a bundle of toys, the event raised over $4,500 for this program. The price of admission to this event is one unwrapped new toy or $10 per person. Toys for older children are particularly needed. Complimentary coffee and donuts and a post ride gathering provided by LT’s Grill, Nott St., Niskayuna. LEARN TO SKATE AND CROSS-ICE /LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY PROGRAM Troy-Albany Youth Hockey Association (TAYHA) is accepting registrations for its Cross Ice/ Learn to Play Hockey program.

This program, recommended for children ages 4-7 yrs, is a 16 week Cross-Ice Hockey development program for young skaters.

Each session will include developmental skating skills, stick and puck handling and exciting cross ice scrimmages. Hockey equipment is provided free of charge to the first 30 participants in TAYHA’s Cross Ice/Learn to Play program. The program, meets on Saturday mornings at 8:00 am at the Albany County Hockey Facility in Albany.

The Learn to Skate program is offered on Saturdays at 12:30 pm at Frear Park ice rink in Troy. This 16 week program, taught

by Dave Randall of North American Hockey Systems is for children with little or no skating experience. Free loaner hockey equipment is available to the first 30 registrants for Learn to Skate. PITTSTOWN HIST. SOC. HOST AWARDWINNING AUTHOR/FILMMAKER Award-winning author and filmmaker Scott Christianson will speak about his new book on Charles Nalle, a runaway slave from VA on Thursday, October 20th, at 7:30PM at the Pittstown Town Hall in Tomhannock. Christianson will tell how Nalle (who hid in Sand Lake and Troy before he was betrayed and arrested) was set free in the most dramatic slave rescue in American history. Christianson will also reveal local details about the Underground Railroad and the struggle to end slavery. Christianson has authored numerous books and articles and has worked on documentary films for HBO, PBS, and CBS. The meeting, which is free and open to the public, is presented by the Pittstown Historical Society.

JUSTIN FARLEY BEGINS AMERICORP TRAINING Justin Farley, a graduate of Troy High School and SUNY Plattsburgh will be leaving on October 12th, 2011 for AmeriCorp.

Justin will begin his training in October at the Southwest Region Campus located in Denver, Colorado. For the next ten months he and other members of AmeriCorps will make a difference in many lives, bringing hope to communities across the nation, through service in education, the environment, public safety, human needs, and disaster relief.

Justin is the grandson of Nancy and Arthur Rockwell, both the Rockwell’s can be found working at the Doors of Hope.

Nancy is the Coordinator there and Art does whatever is asked of him, both provide community service with a smile.

Sacred Heart School held its annual Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 21st. Ms. Susan Holland, Principal, began the evening welcoming the parents and talking about 21st century learning skills and President Obama’s challenge to American Educators to out-innovate and out-educate the rest of the world.

Parents were given an opportunity to meet their children’s teachers and learn what the teachers’ expectations are for the current school year.

OLD DOG, STRAY DOG Every year animal control officers receive calls about old dogs who suddenly and mysteriously disappear. The dog may have stayed on the property for 10 years or more with no inclination to leave. Dog owners tend to feel comfortable as the dog ages. After all, if he hasn’t wandered off by now he isn’t likely to. Yet, one day the old dog is gone. Unfortunately, too many of these old dogs are never seen alive again. Most owners do not consider the fact that, as dogs age, they share some of the same changes as humans. Some dogs don’t see as well or hear as well as they used to. Arthritis is common as well as changes in behavior.

Cognitive changes may progress slowly and may be easy to miss. Like people, dogs vary greatly in how they age. When dementia occurs in dogs, it can involve subtle or dramatic behavior. A dog may appear disoriented at times. His sleeping habits may change, his housebreaking may suffer and he may not respond to circumstances as he used to. A dog may exhibit one sign of dementia or many. One of the most common behaviors is an old dog walking aimlessly. It is not at all unusual for an old dog to simply walk, putting one foot in front of the other, with no destination in mind. This behavior is not unusual in humans with dementia, as we know. In the case of a dog who always stayed on the property without use of a fence, we now have a dog walking aimlessly into the woods or roadway.

When these dogs get tired, they simply lay down wherever they are, in a ditch, in the road or in the woods. If and when they get up again, many of these poor animals have no direction of travel in mind. If they get too wet, too cold and too lost, the old dog may not survive.

It is important to pay close attention to behavior changes in aging dogs. If there are signs of disorientation, see your veterinarian. There are some drugs that may help. At the very least, the older dog should be safely contained in a fenced yard and watched closely. ~Catherine Crawmer, Animal Control Officer 477-8230

COME HELP US ROCK THE VALLEY A fundraiser to benefit local victims of Tropical Storm Irene will be held from noon-midnight Saturday, Oct. 15th, in downtown Schoharie. The Schoharie Valley Rock’n’Roll Flood Relief Concert, sponsored by The Schoharie Kiwanis Club, and hosted by PYX 106, will feature many popular local bands, including Poor Dead Molly, Flashback, Shakey Ground, Bar Stool Orphans, Chicken Herders, M-16 and Erin Harkes. The event will also feature a beer truck, chicken barbeque, food vendors and 50-50 raffles. ARC IN THE PARK 5K RACE The Arc of Rensselaer County presents The “Arc in the Park 5K Race” which will be held on Sunday, October 16th, at the Rensselaer Tech Park in North Greenbush at 10AM. This is our second year of doing a 5K Race and we hope to raise money to support our programs and services for people with intellectual disabilities in our community.

We are looking for people to participate in the “Arc in the Park 5K Race”. You can walk, run or roll (use a wheelchair) in the 5K race. LANSINGBURGH HISTORICAL SOCIETY OCTOBER MEETING Our October meeting will be held on Thursday, October 13th, at 7:30PM at the Melville House located on the corner of 114th Street and First Avenue in Lansingburgh. Michael Esposito, a long-time Troy resident and retired librarian, will speak about Troy’s Little Italy. His book on this subject was issued by Arcadia Publishing in 2009. Italian immigrants began arriving in Troy in the late 1880s, escaping the abject poverty of their homeland. They settled just south of the central business district, in an area bustling with activity.

The neighborhood contained blocks of two- and three-story brick buildings and a mix of row houses and freestanding homes on streets adjacent to Mount Ida, the city’s most prominent geographic feature. These Italian immigrants began opening small businesses, particularly on Fourth Street, the center of the Little Italy neighborhood, and soon became an important part of Troy’s cultural heritage. Signed and inscribed copies of his book will be available for purchase at the meeting. The meeting is open to the public and refreshments will be served. MAMMOGRAPHY SAVES LIVES The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is urging women to get mammograms.

“October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a significant time to remind women to get mammograms,” says Hillary Rutter, the director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program “I hope that this month women will take the time to make an appointment for a mammogram. Approximately 95 percent of all mammograms prove to be normal.”

For more information and to locate an accredited mammography facility nearby, call the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program at 800-877-8077. Callers can also get emotional support from the hotline’s specially trained volunteers, most of whom are women who have had breast cancer.

The hotline has been in existence for 31 years. It is a project of the Adelphi University School of Social Work on Long Island.

LEGISLATURE TEAMS UP WITH ELOT FOR ELECTRONICS RECYCLING DAY The Rensselaer County Legislature will again team up with Troy business eLot to sponsor an electronics recycling day on October 22, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid and Legislator Alex Shannon announced. The electronics recycling event will be the sixth jointly sponsored by Rensselaer County and eLot. Participation in the past electronics recycling days has been outstanding. “We have had great success with the past ffive electronics recycling days and invite residents to participate in the event on October 22,” said Shannon.

“These recycling events have proven to be a great way to safely recycle unwanted electronics and appliances. We are happy to continue with our partnership with eLot in sponsoring these important events,” said Legislator Judith Breselor.

The sixth electronics recycling day will be held Saturday, October 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the eLot location on Main Street in South Troy. Residents can drop off appliances and electronics for free. There will be a $20 charge each for television and no console TVs will be accepted. Lamps are subject to a charge. POESTENKILL SPIRIT DAY FLOOD RELIEF EVENT - OCTOBER 29th

The Town of Poestenkill was heavily impacted by the recent severe weather caused by Tropical Storms Irene and Lee. The resultant flooding from these storms washed out roads, eroded land along the Poesten Kill and destroyed several homes as well as severely damaging others. There are still many town residents who are struggling to recover from the results of the flooding that ravaged their homes and property.

A collaboration of town organizations will be sponsoring an event, Poestenkill Spirit Day, to raise funds to aid those residents who have been adversely affected.

This benefit is still in the planning stages. Thus far, the program includes a roast beef dinner, sponsored by the town organizations, at the Poestenkill Fire Department, a raffle of items donated by local merchants and a special raffle of a large screen TV. It will also be an opportunity for the community to come together to aid our neighbors.

Please save the date, October 29. As more details become available, they will be announced in The Advertiser and on the Town of Poestenkill website (www.townofpoestenkillny.org) and the Poestenkill Library website (www.poestenkilllibrary.org).

KNITTING FOR NOVICES IN GRAFTON Grafton Community Library is presenting a series of introductory knitting classes for beginners. No experience is necessary.

This class will have techniques, projects, social networking for knitters, great books and whatever else we can fit in. Together, we will be making dishcloths and a hat in time for holiday giving.

Instructor Lynda Holt has twenty-five years of knitting experience. She owns two sheep and is experienced in spinning and using natural dyes to color yarn. Lynda makes her home in Pittstown with her husband, two boys, and her stash of yarn.

The group will meet for six Mondays beginning October 17 through November 28, excluding Halloween on October 31.

Class time is 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. and materials are provided.

Class size is limited and participants must be at least ten years old. Pre-registration is required either in person or by calling the library at 279-0580. The Grafton Community Library is located at 2455 NY Route 2.

Emil Altschuler is described by master violinist Erik Friedman as “a very gifted violinist who possesses the talent and capability to become a truly outstanding violinist of his generation” playing with “a sound and accuracy of intonation that are truly extraordinary.” He holds degrees from the Julliard School and the Yale University School of Music.

Guitarist Jerome Mouffe earned his Master of Music degree from the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles and a Postgradiert Diploma at the Mozarteum Universitat, Salzburg. He is a doctoral candidate at the New England Conservatory under the direction of Eliot Fisk. His debut CD, Capriccio, was released in 2009.

MILITARY MUSEUM DISPLAYS QUILT HONORING MOTHERS & FALLEN SERVICE MEMBERS A quilt featuring the names of 24 Capital Region service members who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001 goes on display at the New York State Military Museum next week.

The quilt features white stars on a blue background embroidered with the name of the service member and next to that is gold star featuring the name of the service members mother.

The quilt is a tribute from the Capital Region Chapter of Blue Star Mothers of America Inc. to the Gold Star mothers who have lost sons or daughters in the two wars, said Janet Moran, the chapter president of Blue Star Mothers.

The stars reference banners that have been hung in houses and windows since World War I to indicate a member of the family serving in combat and a death in combat.

During World War I, families with one or more members serving in the military would hang banners in the window with one, two, or more blue stars for each service member. When a family member was killed in action, the blue star became a gold star.

In 1928, a group of mothers whose sons had been killed in the war formed the Gold Star Mothers as a support organization and as a way to remember their children.

Blue Star Mothers was organized in 1998 as a way for women with sons and daughters in the military to support their children and all military members.

The Capital Region Blue Star Mothers began working on their tribute quilt in July. Some of the 1090 members cut out fabric while others did the sewing, Moran said.

The quilt was formally presented to the Gold Star Mothers from the Capital Region on Sept. 24 and will hang in the museum in October as a way to share it with the public, Moran said.

The quilt complements the recently opened exhibit on the New York National Guard since Sept. 11, 2001, said Military History Museum curator Courtney Burns. A part of the exhibits honors the 32 Soldiers of the New York Army National Guard who have died in Iraq and Afghanistan, he said.

It is a basic boating safety class, which is required for anyone in New York to operate a PWC and is recommended for anyone who would like to learn basic boating skills. Anyone over age 10 is welcome, and there is no fee for the class for ages 10 - 18. Anyone over the age of 18 will be required to pay a $10 fee to New York State for the certificate. FREE PASTA DINNER The First Reformed Church in Wynantskill is again inviting anyone in the community who is looking for good food and warm fellowship to attend our Free Pasta Dinners that will be served on Tuesday evenings at 5:30PM. COUNTY SHERIFF’S OPERATION SAFE CHILD EVENTS The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office will be offering parents the opportunity to create Free Child Id Cards for their children through Operation Safe Child on the following dates: • October 22, 2011: Poestenkill Elementary School Harvest Fest; 1 School Rd., Poestenkill; 9AM – 12PM. • October 22, 2011: Schaghticoke Town Hall; 290 Northline Drive, Melrose; 12PM – 4PM. • October 29, 2011: Christ Fellowship Church, 5 North Nassau Rd., Averill Park; 11AM – 4PM In addition, the Rensselaer County K-9 Unit will be conducting K-9 demonstrations at the October 22nd Safe Child Events.

An additional K-9 demonstration will also take place on October 22, 2011 at the Woodland Hill Montessori School, 100 Montessori Place, North Greenbush, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Possessing up-to-date photographs and detailed information about a child are important proactive measures that greatly assist law enforcement to quickly respond to a child’s disappearance.

OPERATION SAFE CHILD equipment uses digital fingerprinting technology and high resolution photography to produce SAFE CHILD cards for parents and guardians.

The cards contain a child’s name, biographical information (date of birth, gender, height, weight, hair color, eye color, etc.), and a fingerprint image of both index fingers.

The card is made in less than two minutes and can be easily carried in a wallet or pocketbook.

The information gathered is digitally recorded and stored in a database at the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS).

NYS YOUTH SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE On Saturday, December 3, 2011, the Grafton Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will host a snowmobile safety course for young people ages 10 to 18. Students must be at least 10 years old on the day of the course. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate.

The course will be held at the Grafton VFW Hall on South Road (581 County Route 85), Grafton, from 8:15am to approximately 5pm. The course will be taught by NYS certified volunteer instructor Jim Blessing. The course will cover topics such as NYS laws and regulations, riding skills, trail emergencies, protecting the environment, maintenance and repair, trailer safety, etc.

The Rensselaer County Legislature welcomed representatives of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution as recognition of Constitution Week in the United States, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid and Legislator Lester Goodermote announced.

This September marked the 224th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States by the Constitutional Convention.

The Constitution was drafted to provide a framework of American democracy. The document was intended to achieve six purposes, including forming a more perfect Union, establishing Justice, insuring domestic Tranquility, providing for the common defense, promoting the general Welfare, and securing the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.”

“It is important to recognize the enormous importance and impact the Constitution has on our daily lives and the conduct our society. The Constitution is one of the most profound documents in history, and is still vital today,” said Goodermote, who serves as chair of the Local Government Committee.

A federal law ensures the president issues a proclamation each year designating September 17 through 23 as Constitution Week. Each year, the County Legislature adopted a resolution recognizing the week and hosting a presentation by representatives of the Van Rensselaer Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

“We are proud to join the Daughters of the American Revolution in the annual recognition of the Constitution and the work of our founding fathers in drafting and adopting this document,” added Legislator Lester Goodermote, who is a member of the Local Government Committee.

GRAFTON LAKES STATE PARK HOSTING FALL OUTDOOR FUN DAY & BARBEQUE Grafton Lakes State Park is hosting their second Fall Fun Day on Sunday, October 22nd. This year we’ll feature a barbeque from Brunswick Barbeque & Brew. There will also be live music from “The Stray Dogs”, a treasure hunt, bike ride and Foliage hike, and much more! For outdoor enthusiasts and families, events begin in the morning with a guided mountain bike ride at 10am. Then the park is offering a host of activities from during the barbeque from 12pm to 4pm. A family nature crafts program, face painting, and a treasure hunt using map and compass will be fun for the whole family. At 3 we’ll offer a short nature and foliage hike highlighting the Grafton landscape past and present. “The Stray Dogs” will be performing from 1pm-3pm.
