NYS CANAL CORPORATION TOUR On Friday, October 28th from 1:30 until 3:30 pm, Ed Suprenant, Superintendent of Section 2 of the NYS Canals (from Lock 2 to Lock 9) will lead the guide. He will demonstrate the workings of a lock, dry dock and also give a tour of the fabrication building where all the metal parts for the canal locks are made. A representative from the NYS museum will also interpret the history of the 1921 canal motor ship, the Day Peckinpaugh, and will talk about this future for this amazing boat. BOOK AND MOVIE GROUP The Book and Movie Group of the Brunswick Community Library meets on the third and fourth Fridays of each month at 12:30PM. The group first reads a book, then sees the movie and compares the two. Our selection for the month of October is a book by Stephen King, called “Cujo”. This author is noted for his horror stories and this is no exception. We will meet on October 21st to discuss the book and on October 28th to see the movie. CO. LEGISLATURE TEAMS UP WITH ELOT FOR ELECTRONICS RECYCLING DAY The Rensselaer County Legislature will again team up with Troy business eLot to sponsor an electronics recycling day on October 22, Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid and Legislator Alex Shannon announced.

The electronics recycling event will be the sixth jointly sponsored

by Rensselaer County and eLot. Participation in the past electronics recycling days has been outstanding.

“We have had great success with the past ffive electronics recycling days and invite residents to participate in the event on October 22,” said Shannon.

“These recycling events have proven to be a great way to safely recycle unwanted electronics and appliances. We are happy to continue with our partnership with eLot in sponsoring these important events,” said Legislator Judith Breselor.

The sixth electronics recycling day will be held Saturday, October 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the eLot location on Main Street in South Troy.

Residents can drop off appliances and electronics for free.

There will be a $20 charge each for television and no console TVs will be accepted. Lamps are subject to a charge.

The event is organized by the county Environmental Management Council, which is an office of the County Legislature. For more questions regarding the event, please call the EMC at 270-2888.

“LIGHT’S ON AFTERSCHOOL” Troy Boys & Girls Club will host a “Light’s On Afterschool” event on October 20 from 4-6pm at 1700 7th Ave., Troy, NY 12180.

According to recent study by “America After 3pm”, 1 in 4 children (K-12 grades) in NYS are responsible for taking care of themselves after school. Part of the Afterschool Alliance’s national initiative, this event sends a message that after-school programs (like Troy Boys & Girls Club’s NYS licensed program) are critical to keeping kids safe, inspiring them to achieve and providing affordable childcare for working families.

During Troy Boys & Girls Club’s event, members’ art work will be displayed, there will be a variety of activities planned and light refreshments will be served. “PENNIES FROM HEAVEN” JCPenney’s “Pennies from Heaven” program scheduled for October 12th - October 25th at the JCPenney store in Latham Circle Mall will raise proceeds to benefit Troy Boys & Girls Club in downtown Troy. During this period, JCPenney customers are invited to turn small change into “pennies from heaven” by rounding up their purchases and donating the difference to a local afterschool program that provide at-risk children access to life-enriching activities that inspire children to be smart, strong and socially responsible.

In 2010, JCPenney in Latham Circle Mall raised over $6,000 to support Troy Boys & Girls Club’s after school programs and nationally the campaign has raised 100 million since its inception to support after school programs. LEGISLATURE WELCOMES HOOSICK FALLS GIRLS SCOUTS & REMEMBRANCE QUILT

Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature welcomed two Hoosick Falls Girl Scouts who designed a special remembrance quilt for the 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature welcomed two Hoosick Falls Girl Scouts who designed a special remembrance quilt for the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.

The quilt was designed by Sarah Sigot and Tiffany St. Hilaire and includes depictions of American ideals and values, and events that occurred during the terrorist attacks.

Vice Chairman of the Legislature Stan Brownell and Legislator Lester Goodermote welcomed Sarah and Tiffany to the September legislative meeting to recognize the girls for their work in compiling the remembrance quilt.

“This is a very moving tribute to the events of that sad day ten years ago. It is our hope that this quilt will be viewed by as many residents as possible to help ensure the sacrifice and heroism of that day is never forgotten,” said Brownell.

Sarah and Tiffany displayed the quilt at the September legislative meeting, where they were presented with a resolution recognizing their work.

“Both Sarah and Tiffany did an outstanding job with this quilt and we are proud to have been able to welcome them to our chambers and recognize the effort that went into putting this quilt together,” added Goodermote.

I am a life-long resident of Rensselaer County, and a third generation Brunswick resident raising a family with my wife Darlene with our two children, Lia and Patrick, like my Grandparents did, who resided on North Lake Avenue in the Sycaway area. I was elected in 2007, and now running to keep my position on the Town Board.

Since my appointment, I have and will continue to build on the reputation that my father, former NYS Assemblyman Pat Casale, also a former Brunswick resident, has taught me. This is to be honest, sincere, and accessible to all the people.

The Town of Brunswick is a beautiful town with different characteristics in each area. As the town grows, I will carefully keep an eye on the quality of life and continue to be an advocate that the town maintains our municipal services as well as take care of our senior citizens, our youth, and our future. I will also remain a strong advocate on holding the line on taxes as the town has continued to do over the past years.

I have been and continue to be involved and dedicated in the community to which I live. I am currently serving as a trustee for the Brunswick Historical Society. I also serve as a parishioner of St. Bonaventure’s Church, a volunteer for Brunswick Youth Sports. I am a member of the Brunswick Elks, an associate member of the Lansingburgh Veterans, a director for the Society of the Friends of St. Patrick. I am on the advisory committee for the Boy Scouts of America and a volunteer for the Regional Food Bank. Finally, I am on the public safety committee for the town.

I graduated from Lansingburgh High School, HVCC and Utica College of Syracuse University with a B.S. in Construction Management.

Brunswick is a great place to live and raise a family. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to continue to keep serving you on the Town of Brunswick’s council; I will continue to work hard and remain accessible and committed to all the residents of the Town of Brunswick.

LEARN TO SKATE AND CROSS-ICE /LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY PROGRAM Troy-Albany Youth Hockey Association (TAYHA) is accepting registrations for its Cross Ice/ Learn to Play Hockey program.

This program, recommended for children ages 4-7 yrs, is a 16 week Cross-Ice Hockey development program for young skaters.

Each session will include developmental skating skills, stick and puck handling and exciting cross ice scrimmages. Hockey equipment is provided free of charge to the first 30 participants in TAYHA’s Cross Ice/ Learn to Play program. The program, meets on Saturday mornings at 8:00 am at the Albany County Hockey Facility in Albany. The Learn to Skate program is offered on Saturdays at 12:30 pm at Frear Park ice rink in Troy. This 16 week program, taught by Dave Randall of North American Hockey Systems is for children with little or no skating experience. Free loaner hockey equipment is available to the first 30 registrants for Learn to Skate. Both of these programs begin the weekend of 10/22/11. TROY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB SLICES UP A TASTY EVENT- PIZZAPALOOZA!

THIS IS GOOD NEWS; MAYBE Based on the Supervisor‘s message in the Town of Brunswick Fall Newsletter, it appears that the Town is finally taking steps to comply with the State Law that requires local comprehensive land use plans be updated.

"The town board shall provide, as a component of such proposed comprehensive plan, the maximum intervals at which the adopted plan shall be reviewed." See State Town Law Section 272-a.10. Depending on how the Town Board conducts the update, Brunswick residents may have a chance to participate in shaping the policy for future development within the Town. State law calls for citizen participation. "The participation of citizens in an open, responsible and flexible planning process is essential to the designing of the optimum town comprehensive plan." See State Town Law Section 272-a.1(c) This is good news considering that it looks like a complete change of heart by the Town Board. By way of background, the current Town Comprehensive Plan was adopted in February, 2001, but it did not specify when it would be updated. In 2005, 2,000 Brunswick residents signed a petition asking that the Comprehensive Plan and zoning regulations be evaluated before a series of amendments to the zoning ordinance were adopted.

These amendments known as Planned Development Districts were requested by real estate developers.

These amendments will allow the development of large portions of the Town and could increase the population by as much as 30%. Instead of acceding to the petition of the 2,000 residents, the Town Board adopted the amendments to the zoning ordinance requested by the developers.

Now, after the zoning amendments requested by the developers have been enacted, the Town Board seems ready to follow the State Law that requires the update.

Hopefully, the update will include a survey of the residents similar to the survey conducted in 1999. The results of that survey were recited in the 2001 Comprehensive Plan, including that the residents wanted to keep Brunswick the way it was and favored stronger zoning laws to do that. "Brunswick understands that it will be necessary to amend existing Town regulations and add new ones in order to implement the policies of this Comprehensive Plan." See page 39 of the Comprehensive Plan. This was not done. Hopefully, the change of heart will include following this wish of the residents. Based on past experience, the question is, who controls the update - developers or residents? Is this truly a change of heart? Time will tell.

AP MUSIC STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN CONCERT with BOSTON STRING QUARTET! On September 30 and October 1, several students from Averill Park High School participated in a series of workshops and rehearsals, which culminated in a performance with the Boston String Quartet at the Troy Savings Band Music Hall. The experience was part of the inaugural concert for the EthnoUrban Orchestra, a venture by the quartet in the continuing effort to reach out to school students, and combine popular culture with traditional styles of playing.

Volunteers working with the Friends of the Brunswick Community Library felt so bad about the recent flooding that devastated the Schoharie Library that we decided to donate all the proceeds of our upcoming book sale. We all know how important a library is to a small town and want to do our small part to help with their recovery. Our basement is bursting at the seams with used books for all ages and interests. In honor of the National 4H week, from October 3- October 8, Jogging Juniors 4H club would like to share our accomplishments over the past year. Our club welcomed new members and also said goodbye to our graduating members.

Our members participated in project demonstrations and our cloverbuds completed project records and participated in Horse Bowl. Our club members got together last fall and made various items to sell at a Tractor Supply Co. Fundraiser. We also had members who participated in horse events over the year. We rode our horses at the Schaghticoke Fair and our club helped at the 4H food booth during the fair. Besides riding in the fair, we also rode at the Grafton Trail Riders Gymkhanas over the summer; four Gymkhanas over four months. During the July and September Gymkhana, our club ran a food booth for the participants and visitors for the day. The Grafton Trail Riders also had an Over the Mountain Trail Ride, which our club volunteered ourselves to cleanup after the banquet dinner they had. BRUNSWICK CSD SEEKS VOLUNTEERS FOR DISTRICT PLANNING DAY Brunswick (Brittonkill) CSD is seeking parents and district residents for its annual District Planning Day scheduled for Saturday, October 22, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Tamarac Secondary School. The District Planning Day is an annual event which brings faculty, staff, parents, community members and students together to set priorities for the 2012-13 school year.

There are small group discussions followed by a larger group discussion. Lunch will be served to all participants. To ensure we include the community’s perspective and values in setting these priorities, we are looking for parent and district resident volunteers. There also is a brief 15 minute training that all participants must attend. Trainings are scheduled for October 17 – 20. Sheriff Jack Mahar is currently serving his seventh year as Rensselaer County Sheriff. After serving 4 years in the United States Marine Corps, Sheriff Mahar served the Troy Police Department for nearly 28 years where he achieved the rank of Captain and commanded all units within the Department. He is a graduate of SUNY, Empire State College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration, and a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association. Early in his career, Sheriff Mahar was selected by the FBI to serve an Executive Fellowship at FBI Headquarters, Safe Streets Unit.

Sheriff Mahar has received numerous commendations and awards including the Champion for Children Award from the anti-crime group, “Fight Crime: Invest in Kids” and the Project Child Safe and Project Safe Neighborhoods award in recognition of his work on behalf of young people.

In 2011, Sheriff Mahar was elected President of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association. In this role, he serves as the top liaison between local sheriffs and the State Legislature on issues such as counter-terrorism, drug crimes, jails, EMS and 9-1-1 to name a few.

A member of the Lansingburgh Veterans, the United States Marine Corps League and the Rensselaer County Veterans’ Coalition, the Sheriff’s efforts on behalf of local veterans have been recognized by the Veterans of Stephentown and the United States Air Force.

Sheriff Mahar is a member of TRIAD, a partnership between area senior citizens, law enforcement agencies and community groups that work together to reduce the criminal victimization of senior citizens.

Sheriff Mahar has also been honored by the Rensselaer County Legislature for creating a program which has certified all thirtyone of his Sheriff’s Deputies as Emergency Medical Technicians, making the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office the only law enforcement agency in the State where all deputies are certified EMT’s.

A native of Troy, New York, Sheriff Mahar currently resides in Pittstown with his wife, Selina, and has three children and one grandchild. He enjoys riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle as well as aviation and possesses his private pilot’s license.

The Highlight Acting Troupe wil l be presenting Arsenic and Old Lace written by Joseph Kesselring and directed by Ron LeVan. Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedy about the sweet old Brewster sisters (Lucy Breyer, Georgia Visconti), who are beloved in their Brooklyn neighborhood for their many charitable acts. One charity which the ladies don’t advertise is their ongoing effort to permit lonely bachelors to die with smiles on their faces—by serving said bachelors elderberry wine spiked with arsenic. When the sisters’ drama-critic nephew Mortimer (A.J. Printsky) stumbles onto their secret, he is understandably put out—especially since he has just become engaged to Elaine Harper (Rebecca Hoffay). Given the homicidal tendencies of his aunts, the sinister activities of his escaped-convict older brother Jonathan (Mark Simpson) and the disruptive behavior of younger brother Teddy (Mark Strock)—who is convinced that he’s really Theodore Roosevelt, and runs around the house yelling “CHAAAAARGGGE”- he is hesitant to marry Elaine. Further complications ensue when the murderous Jonathan Brewster arrives home, with his snivelling accomplice Dr. Einstein (Alan Angelo) in tow. When Jonathan learns that his darling aunts have killed twelve men, he is incensed—they’re challenging his own record of murders.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning the public that the use of benzocaine gels and liquids for mouth or gum pain can lead to a rare but serious condition called methemoglobinemia, which causes the amount of oxygen in the bloodstream to be greatly reduced.

These over-the-counter products, in which the main ingredient is benzocaine, are sold under a number of store brands and national brands such as Anbesol, Hurricaine, Orajel, Baby Orajel, and Orabase. Benzocaine is also found in lozenges and sprays used to relieve pain from teething, canker sores and irritated gums.

The rare condition occurred mainly in children aged 2 years or younger who were given benzocaine gel for teething. Symptoms of methemoglobinemia don’t always appear but can include pale, gray- or blue-colored skin, lips and nail beds; shortness of breath; fatigue; confusion; head-ache; light-headedness; and rapid heart rate. These signs usually appear within minutes to hours of applying benzocaine and may occur with the first application of benzocaine or after additional use. If you or your child develops any of these symptoms, see a doctor right away.

Benzocaine-containing products should not be used on children less than 2 years old, unless a doctor says to, and should be stored out of children’s reach.

The American Academy of Pediatrics offers some easy, safe alternatives for treating teething pain: •Give the child a chilled teething ring.

•Gently rub or massage the child’s gums with your finger.

If these methods don’t ease the pain, ask your doctor.

Adults who choose to use benzocaine products should follow the label recommendations. If the pain continues, see a doctor.

On Sunday, November 6th, the Brunswick Harley Owners Group (HOG) will hold its annual Toys for Tots Benefit Ride to raise funds and gather toys for the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots Program. Registration begins at 11 AM at Brunswick Harley Davidson, 1130 Hoosick Rd., Troy, NY. A guided parade of bikes, with police escort will take place at Noon. The parade will travel down routes 7 and 142, through Lansingburgh, Waterford, Crescent, Halfmoon, Niskayuna, Schenectady and end up at the Marine Recruiting Station at the Schenectady County Airport. ANNUAL HOLIDAY FAIR TO BE HELD AT CORNERSTONE On Saturday, November 5th, Cornerstone Community Church of Lansingburgh will hold their annual Holiday Fair.

Items for sale will be: Holiday items, jewelry, next-to-new items, homemade fudge and candy table and homemade baked goods. Hours will be 9AM until 2 PM. A baked ziti lunch will be served from 11:30AM to 1PM. The $5 price for lunch includes: baked ziti, salad, bread, choice of dessert and beverage. Ala Carte menu is also available. The church is located at Third Avenue and 115th Street in Lansingburgh.
