TUTUNJIAN REMINDS RESIDENTS TO APPLY FOR STAR Mayor Harry Tutunjian reminded residents to apply for property tax exemptions by March 1, 2012 to the City Assessors’ office.

Mayor Tutunjian said “These property tax exemptions are made available to seniors, disabled veterans, and many others to make your property or school tax obligations more manageable.”

One exemption is the “Basic STAR” and open to all residents.

“STAR” stands for School Tax Relief”, as the savings reduce only the school portion of the tax bill. To qualify, the property being applied for must be a one-, two-, or three-family home and must be the primary or legal residence of at least one of the owners.

There are potentially two STAR programs available to seniors: the Senior Aged STAR program or Enhanced STAR program.

Applications can be located in the Assessor’s office on the first floor of City Hall. For the STAR exemptions, first-time applicants must supply age and income documentation and proof of primary residency. For Enhanced STAR, household income must be less than $79,050 and for the Senior Aged STAR, household income must be $37,400 or less. Filers for either program must be at least 65 years of age by December 31, 2011.

Enhanced STAR applicants must renew annually.

Military veterans qualify for several exemptions, including the Alternative Veterans or Cold War Veterans exemptions. For both, qualified disabled veterans may receive an additional exemption; proof of disability must be provided annually. To apply, the applicant will need a completed veteran application, a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers and proof of primary residence listed which must be a one, two, or three family residence.

The exemptions for veterans provide a tax savings for town and county property taxes but not for school or special districts.

Additional savings are allowed for those who served in a combat zone and even more savings are allowed for those with a serviceconnected disability rating. Un-remarried surviving spouses of veterans may retain the benefit. A copy of discharge papers will be required with the application. HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SPEAKING at LA SALLE INSTITUTE Students from La Salle Institute in 10th and 11th grade will have the opportunity to listen to Holocaust survivor Murry Jaros, of Niskayuna, speak and entertain questions on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, from 1 to 2PM in McCormick Hall at La Salle. Jaros will speak for approximately 40 minutes and then will take questions for the next 20 minutes. Religion Department Chair Jim Iavarone has had his students prepare questions to complement the study they have completed on the subject. Both History and Religion departments have organized the event. Iavarone commented on the upcoming event, “this is a very exciting opportunity for our students, and one I’m sure they’ll remember for a long time.”

CHRISTMAS CONCERT AT CORNERSTONE The Lansingburgh Ecumenical Community Choir will present their annual Christmas concert on Sunday evening, December 11th, at 6PM. The choir is made up of choir members from several area churches. The theme this year is “Season of Praise”. The concert will be held at Cornerstone Community Church of Lansingburgh. A WARM COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT The next time you slip your hands into a cozy pair of mittens/ gloves, pull a hat on your head, put a scarf on your neck or new clean socks on your feet on a cold morning, just imagine how sad it would be if you had to go through the winter with a cold head, neck, hands or feet! In Rensselaer County there will be many children who face that bleak prospect unless you lend a hand.

From November 7th until December 20th, there will be a tree in the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County office with bare branches waiting to be filled with your donations of mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and socks. All sizes and colors are welcome, whether homemade or purchased. We would like to see branches hanging full of warm fuzzies.

This year we also are accepting donations of knitted newborn and preemie sweaters, booties and hat sets. So if you are a talented knitter, show off your talent by donating items to our tree. At your next business or social meeting, why not collect mittens/hats/scarves/socks, then bring them by the basketful to our office where they will be hung. All of the mittens and hats/scarves/socks will be donated to children through the Teen Stork Room coordinated by Tarasha Darden-McKoy. Let’s get going and warm your heart while you warm a child’s hands and head. The Cornell Cooperative Extension office is located at 61 State Street in downtown Troy-2nd floor. On Tuesday, December 6th, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA) will host a public workshop at the Poestenkill Fire Hall (182 Main Street, Poestenkill, NY). This will be the first of several public workshops sponsored by the RPA to provide updates and opportunities for input as it facilitates the development of a Regional Conservation Plan for the Rensselaer Plateau in the coming months. The purpose of this workshop is to: Introduce the Regional Conservation Plan project to the community, Review outcomes of previous public meetings (April 2010 in Stephentown and Grafton) and the community values forums (May 2011 in Petersburgh and Poestenkill) Review progress on the inventory and analysis (ecological assessment, economic assessment, and community values) Engage participants in a discussion about their expectations for and concerns about the idea of a “regional conservation plan” for the plateau. BRUNSWICK HISTORICAL SOCIETY DECEMBER EVENTS On Saturday, December 3rd, at 1:00 PM, the Brunswick Historical Society will be hosting a Holiday Open House. ELKS NATIONAL AND STATE SCHOLARSHIPS Applications are now available for the Elks National Foundation and the New York State Elks Association scholarships.

There are two types of national scholarships. One is open to ALL New York State High school seniors. These seniors need not be the child of a member of the Elks. The other national scholarship is open ONLY to children and grandchildren of active Elks members. The state scholarships are for high school seniors who parent is a member is good standing in the Order of Elks.

Forms for these scholarships may be picked up at the counseling centers of Averill Park, Columbia, Maple Hill and Rensselaer High Schools. The chairman of the scholarship committee of the Rensselaer Lodge of Elks No. 2073 is Errol Fitzgerald (477-5427).

“Night on Broadway” is a student concert featuring musical selections from both classic and contemporary Broadway shows. Proceeds from the concert are donated to Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS, a charity that assists performers who struggle with the disease. This year, the Marist College Singers donated $5,000, their largest donation to date.

NYS YOUTH SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE On Saturday, December 3, 2011, the Grafton Trail Blazers Snowmobile Club and the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will host a snowmobile safety course for young people ages 10 to 18. Students must be at least 10 years old on the day of the course. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate. The course will be held at the Grafton VFW Hall on South Road (581 County Route 85), Grafton, from 8:15am to approximately 5pm. The course will be taught

by NYS certified volunteer instructor Jim Blessing. The course will cover topics such as NYS laws and regulations, riding skills, trail emergencies, protecting the environment, maintenance and repair, trailer safety, etc. To register, call the Grafton Lakes State Park office at 279-1155 or e-mail Elena.Shoemaker@parks.ny.gov. SNOWMOBILE SAFETY COURSE The Hudson Valley Snowmobile club will sponsor a Snowmobile Safety Course on December 10th from 8AM to 4:30PM at the Castleton Fire House located at 11 Green Avenue in Castleton.

This course is taught by certified and experienced club instructors who volunteer their time to make the sport safer and more enjoyable for everyone. Successful completion of this course results in the award of a NYS snowmobile safety certificate. This certificate grants those holders, ages 14-17 years old the privilege of operation of a snowmobile without adult supervision. Adults usually get a discount on insurance when course is completed. Check with your insurance agent on your discount (usually 10%). This course is free and sponsored by Hudson Valley Snowmobile Club (lunch will be provided).
