“AT WHAT LEVEL IS YOUR FAITH?” Have you ever thought about how much faith it takes to follow Jesus? Have you ever attempted to measure your trust in God? What does it feel like to be part of the kingdom? Is it possible to renew the level of your faith? Does the question “Is my faith slipping?” make any sense? These are the questions for which the Nassau and Stuyvesant Reformed Churches will be seeking answers during their focus on the Gospel of John on Sunday, March 20, 2011. The sermon will be based on John 3:1-17, the story of what Nicodemus and Jesus shared when they met one night and talked about how to live in the “now” and in the “new” of the Spirit. The Reverend Edward L. Van Kampen, in the sermon titled, “At What Level Is Your Faith, “will talk about how faith as a gift (grace) fits into the answers to these questions and that it is your commitment involved in determining the level of your faith in your faith journey. The Nassau Reformed Church begins worship at 11 a.m. in its chapel on the second level of its Church-School-Building at 43 Church Street (Route 20,) one half mile east of the only traffic light in the village. The Stuyvesant Reformed Church will begin worship at 9 a.m. in its sanctuary, where Church Street meets Route 9J, one half mile south of the only traffic (caution) light in the hamlet of Stuyvesant.

Last week, Jim Breig got welcome news from Moody’s financial rating service. Our finances are improving, resulting in the removal of a “negative” rating and an upgrade of our status to “stable”. We are confident that with the ongoing policies of our Town Board and Comptroller, our finances will continue to advance. Recently, American workers and their unions have become the target of pundits and politicians who blame them for the nation’s economic woes. The unions representing town workers in East Greenbush have demonstrated their willingness to help solve the economic problems we face. The CSEA and Police contracts have been completed, and the Dispatcher’s contract is nearly done. These vital employees, so critical to our town’s daily operations, have agreed to take no salary increases in the first year of their new contracts. We thank them for their exemplary service to East Greenbush. This week we met again with our good neighbors in Rensselaer to complete the details of our cooperative water contract. Also, our work with Rensselaer County on the sewer bypass project is moving forward, with the engineering work nearing completion. Construction should begin during late summer. This endeavor is vital to development projects, upgrades to our sewer plant, and infrastructure. The NYS Department of Transportation is finalizing plans for the Couse Corners roundabout. Construction is scheduled to begin this summer. The project will make a significant and positive difference in the traffic congestion in this heavily traveled intersection. The Fedex project is underway, with completion scheduled for early 2012. We already enjoy a positive working relationship with this Fortune 500 company and have every confidence that Fedex will prove to be a good neighbor in the future. Special thanks to Daniela Lanni and Anita Nero for their great enthusiasm and their many new ideas for the Youth and Community Services Department. They are getting ready for busy spring and summer seasons. Watch for information about their many programs! As always, thanks for the efforts of all our town employees. We are currently operating with fewer employees than we have had in many years and everyone has taken on the extra duties needed to provide services to residents. In particular, I want to thank Dave VanWormer, Rich Benko and the DPW team for meeting the challenges presented by this difficult winter. Hoping for an early Spring!

Always fashionable, the classic white doctor’s coat is a symbol of the completion of the first step in a long, challenging journey that includes four years of medical school, plus clinical residencies and often, subspecialty training. Among the many milestone events in a medical student’s career, receiving a white doctor’s coat is the first tangible affirmation of a goal that each student sets when they begin medical school. On Friday, February 18th, 2011, the University of Vermont College of Medicine, Class of 2014, participated in the White Coat Ceremony in Ira Allen Chapel on the UVM campus. Jordan K. Smith, a 2005 graduate of Averill Park High School and 2009 graduate of the University of Vermont College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, received his “White Coat,” along with 112 classmates. Jordan is planning a career in neurology specializing in neurosurgery. The ceremony is a symbolic gesture, honoring the achievements of students, and marking the official beginning of their clinical education. Universally considered a symbol of the medical profession, the white coat represents an individual’s responsibility and commitment to providing care for others.

AP SCHOOL TAX INCREASE OF 20% Letter to the Editor: That’s correct. It would take a school tax increase of 20% to keep the status quo in the Averill Park School District. Our board asked for a budget that would reflect a 2% increase of the tax levy. It would require a reduction of $4.2 million in expenses. The proposed cuts could impact up to 60 teachers and staff. On Friday, March 4th, the Superintendent sent a letter to teachers and staff informing them that their jobs were in danger. Some teachers shared the news with students who were understandably upset. Parents in the day care program were also notified. That was more than enough to insure a big turnout ready to express their displeasure at the board meeting the following Tuesday. Of the 42 people who addressed the board, half were students, some were teachers and others were parents with children in the daycare program. What’s troubling is no one seems to be reaching out to the 8,000+ property owners who will be forced to pay the additional tax. The Governor’s proposed tax cap will not go into effect until next year. The board was told that this could be their last chance to impose a tax increase greater than 2%. Even more troubling is the increase in health and pension benefits expense this year alone of $2.1 million (+17.7%). The total cost for personnel benefits and pensions is $14.5 million. Nobody likes cuts but the numbers are simply unsustainable. Retirement and health costs will only increase at taxpayer expense. Rensselaer County currently ranks 43rd in the country in property taxes as a percentage of home value. NY State is broke and continues to cut school funding. The contingency budget if we fail to get budget passed will be a tax increase of 11.5%. If you are concerned about your property taxes, you need to attend the school board meeting on March 22nd and let your voice be heard. ~Mark Keefe, Averill Park Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

“DUTCH BARNS - PRESERVATION AND ADAPTIVE REUSE” Greenbush Historical Society will sponsor Keith Cramer from the Dutch Barn Preservation Society who will present an overview and history of the New World Dutch Barn on Sunday, March 27th, at 2PM. The year 2011 marks the 25th anniversary of some successful Adaptive Reuse Projects of area early Dutch barns. One in Coeymans has been relocated and converted to a carpenter’s shop; another from Hoosick has been relocated and converted to a residence. Other early barns have been recently adapted to use as museum space and a studio. The efficient, heavy timber structural system adapted from Northern European precedents reflects the practical construction and engineering skills of the predominately Dutch immigrants who settled this area. The program is appropriately being held at “Pat’s Barn,” Rensselaer Technology Park, 110 Defreest Drive. The barn, now conference center, was built using ninety percent of the original barn located on the site. Construction was a 3-year project completed in September, 2009. Please join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, March 27th, at 2 PM. Everyone is welcome. Refreshments will be served.

THE 8000 POUND GORILLA Letter to the Editor: Given that the jobs they are supposed to be advancing involve knowledge and intelligence, it amazes me how vacuous the teachers unions’ TV commercials are of those elements. Their most recent commercial involves a representation of a fat cat millionaire in his plush office lecturing a couple of adorable children on their need to sacrifice (a word they may not be able to spell until they reach college) so that he can have a tax break. What the commercial failed to show was the eight hundred pound gorilla that is always in the room, glaring at anyone who dares to make eye contact with him. The teachers unions cannot not use facts to promote themselves because the truth is so damaging. They instead use the emotions their propaganda brings out of their intended victims. They trot out the little darlings with the big eyes or the grandmotherly teachers we all love and suggest we will be harming them if we don’t continue to satisfy their insatiable appetite. The unions no longer care about real education. Their goal is the advancement of their bloated dysfunctional system. They are motivated by power and greed which is behind the collapse of many state economies. The taxing of the rich has nothing to do with the funding of education. It is just that the rich constitute an extremely small minority of the voting public and it has always been easy to turn a majority against them. Shame on our educators who participate in such a fraud. Our schools are paid for through our property taxes. We all pay those taxes, not just the rich. Our property taxes are based on the value of our property. Why haven’t we seen a drop in our property taxes commensurate to the drop in our property values? The disproportionate school tax portion of our monthly mortgage/rent payment is the reason many people cannot make those payments and are facing foreclosure. Yet the gorilla still yells for more, but now he’s about eight thousand pounds. Just remember – the bigger they are, the harder they fall. ~David Crawmer, North Greenbush
Rensselaer County Sheriff Jack Mahar, Undersheriff Pat Russo, County Executive Kathy Jimino, deputies and staff at the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office help celebrate retired Deputy Sheriff Harold Rowe’s 101st birthday. Officer Rowe is the former director of the Sheriff’s Office Identification Division. Rensselaer County Sheriff Jack Mahar welcomed 101-year-old retired Deputy Sheriff, Harold Rowe to the office where the former director of the Sheriff’s Identification Division worked more than forty years ago. “It was wonderful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this momentous birthday celebration for retired Deputy Sheriff Harold Rowe,” said Sheriff Mahar. “Harold is an exceptional individual with a wealth of knowledge that we as current law enforcement officers value immensely. I’m very pleased to have had the opportunity to spend time with him, reflect on the past together, and learn from his experiences.” A lifelong resident of Wynantskill, Mr. Rowe founded the North Greenbush Ambulance Association in 1941, using his own dry cleaning truck from his dry cleaning business. He was a member of the Wynantskill Volunteer Fire Department, and the assistant commissioner of the local Boy Scouts for 50 years. Mr. Rowe was the first person to photograph crime scenes, accidents and autopsies for the Sheriff’s Office in Rensselaer County. He retired from the Sheriff’s Office in 1982, at the age of 72. For the past several years, Sheriff Mahar and Undersheriff Pat Russo have been spending Mr. Rowe’s birthday with him. He spent his 100th birthday last year visiting the Sheriff’s Office.

Letter to the Editor: Town residents have watched for the past month as the Town Board majority led by County Legislator Lou Desso, has systematically attempted to justify their sudden firing of a Comptroller they apparently could not manipulate sufficiently so as to refuse to work with the Town Supervisor. The rash firing did not go well when they thoughtlessly appointed the Assessor to do the job. That lasted about a week with a resignation. The barrage of criticism of their treatment of the Comptroller was met with a desperate attempt to justify their action by questioning his honesty. The Board, and in particular Mr. Desso, used a poorly conceived report paid for by taxpayers to question the Comptroller’s honesty. Mr. Desso called for a “forensic audit” so as to imply a criminal embezzlement might have occurred by setting up what the report called an “unauthorized bank account” due to it not being approved by the town board. The CPA firm’s conclusion was absurd as bank accounts are not approved by town boards and never were. Mr. Desso should have known this because he has never once voted to approve a single bank account either during his three years as a Councilman or as a County Legislator. Nonetheless, he leaked the report to the newspapers and called for a “forensic audit”. Despite the proof that the report and Mr. Desso were wrong, the Board Majority refused an effort by Supervisor Ashworth to let the firm review their report, along with the laws proving it wrong, so as to be given a chance to amend it and its potentially libelous conclusion. Apparently afraid to stand up to Mr. Desso, not one member of the Board would join her in that request, preferring instead to pay for a document that unfairly and seriously damaged the reputation of the man they fired. Mr. Desso continued to criticize the Comptroller in last week’s Advertiser. Yet, he says nothing about his appointed Ethics Board which has never met since it was created in January 2010. At least one filed ethics complaint sits in town hall unresolved. Truly remarkable. ~CB Smith, Wynantskill Editors Note: The above article does not necessarily reflect the opinion or endorsement of the Editor or the Staff of THE ADVERTISER, and for all intents and purposes is impossible to verify the truth and veracity of its contents.

NASSAU SUPERVISOR’S REPORT By: David Fleming Despite increases in Town funding for the highway budget, this winter has been devastating. However, following our request and support by Governor Cuomo and federal representatives Gibson, Gillibrand and Schumer, the President has declared the Town of Nassau eligible for FEMA assistance for the post-Christmas storms. This will mean that Nassau will recover thousands of dollars spent dealing with these winter events. We also now start a new chapter in dealing with the remediation of the Loeffel Toxic Site. As you may have heard, the USEPA will be taking over the waste site. I remain cautiously optimistic that EPA will assist our community in dealing with the 30 years of failed remediation at the Loeffel site. A public meeting with EPA will be held on March 24th at St. Mary’s Parish Hall at 7 pm. Please join us for this important meeting. I commend the individuals and organizations like UNCAGED, as well as elected officials that have fought for years to address this toxic mess. It is because of their hard work that this action is even possible. I would also like to remind EPA that failure is not an option in dealing with the remediation of this site. We expect that this toxic blight will be removed from our community. At our recent Board meeting, we reported on the status of the Time Warner Cable contract; the status of planning for the Burden Lake Sewer District; upcoming rabies vaccination clinics; the filing of the Annual Financial Report with the State Comptroller’s Office; approved a request for a charity 5K event; passed Local Law #1 of 2011 extending the current moratorium; extended the operational permit of J&M Auto on Route 20; passed an emergency services resolution; and presented the Board with an updated version of the Town’s Emergency Preparedness Plan. We have also set a special meeting on the draft comprehensive plan for March 31st at 6:30 p.m. I’m also pleased to welcome new Highway Department employee Matthew Wicks. I wish him all the best as he begins his service to Nassau’s residents. I was also pleased to report on the awarding of a $26,000 grant to the Town for work on Town Hall and new equipment for the Justice Court. This is most welcome news. Please visit Nassau’s website at www.townofnassau.org for more information relative to these issues. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions.

SAINT ROSE WORKSHOP HELPS PEOPLE TAKE CHARGE OF STUTTERING The College of Saint Rose will hold its 36th Weekend Workshop for People Who Stutter. With a theme of “Celebrate the Chemistry of Effective Communication – A 40-Year Journey!” this year’s session will mark the 40th anniversary of the Council of Effective Communication for People Who Stutter, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Saint Rose. The workshop will be held Friday, April 1, through Sunday, April 3, in the Thelma P. Lally School of Education, 1009 Madison Ave., Albany. During the three-day session, people who stutter will receive intensive therapy to help them conquer their fears about speech and to learn new ways to better manage their fluency and their stuttering. Saturday and Sunday will include special sessions for both parents and siblings of those who stutter. The workshop addresses the physical, emotional and environmental aspects of stuttering through one-on-one sessions with a therapist and in groups. Participants are taught the skills of normal speech production and are provided with opportunities to practice these skills in a variety of speaking situations. The weekend also includes group sessions designed to explore attitudinal and environmental aspects of stuttering. Parents, family and friends are encouraged to attend a banquet on Saturday. Saint Rose graduate students in communication sciences and disorders provide the therapy under the direct supervision of speech-language pathologists who volunteer their services. The workshop is open to all children, teenagers and adults who stutter. Advance registration is required. Deadline for registration is Monday, March 21. The Weekend Workshop is sponsored by the Saint Rose Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the Council of Effective Communication for People Who Stutter. Sister Charleen Bloom, Ph.D., professor of communication sciences and disorders and a board recognized fluency specialist, and Jeanne Junjulas, clinician and instructor, are coordinating the event. BICENTENNIAL HISTORICAL UPDATE Electricity Comes to West Sand Lake The Wynants Kill: a small stream but mighty and Historical Highlights - Winter 2005 by Robert J. Lilly gives this account. Clifford Hastings of West Sand Lake was the first person to use the Wynants Kill to generate electricity. Hastings, a plant engineer for the Troy and New England Railway decided to convert his grist mill just north of WSL into a hydro-electric generating station. He purchased a Leffel water turbine and a 50 kilowatt generator with a separate exciter and panel – the first water turbine used on the Wynants Kill. He incorporated as the Wynantskill HydroElectric Company (WHEC) and in 1911 furnished lighting to WSL’s four-corners. Wagar’s Hotel on the southwest corner reportedly installed the first light over their pool table. Electric power was available from dusk to 11pm. The Wynants Kill Improvement Association, to which the Hastings family had not belonged, closed their dams in the afternoon and reopened them at dawn for daily operation. Consequently, WHEC had to store water in its own pond for evening use. A switch dropped at three quick intervals signaled that power would be turned off in ten minutes. To further help in overcoming the water shortage, Hastings obtained a secondhand steam-powered electrical generating plant and distributed electricity to homes from Averill Park to Crooked Lake. Evening lighting service’ continued until 1922 when a new coal-fired steam-powered electrical generating plant was built adjacent to the HydroElectric plant, adding a second 50 kilowatt generator to the system. Needing more power than WHEC could supply, J & R McLaren Company and Faith Mills received permission from the Sand Lake Town Board in 1918 to connect with the Albany and Southern Railroad Company’s electrical transmission line at the southern end of Burden Lakes. A lawsuit by Hastings for infringement on his Hydro-electric franchise to supply electric power to WSL was settled in 1922 with the agreement: Albany and Southern would build a substation at WSL and furnish back-up power to WHEC. In 1924, both companies were consolidated and subsequently controlled by New York Power and Light.

DESSO SUBJECT OF ETHICS COMPLAINT
SCIENCE AMBASSADORS
Letter to the Editor: As a result of the reckless conduct of Councilman Desso who maliciously harmed my reputation by disseminating a seriously flawed taxpayer funded report which, incorrectly accused me of creating an “Unauthorized Bank Account” while Town Comptroller, I filed a complaint with the Town Ethics Board. I realize that this complaint will likely meet the same fate that other complaints have met, which is to be utterly ignored by an appointed Ethics Board; which has never once met during its 15 months of existence. While this inexcusable negligence seems to meet with approval from Councilman Desso and his majority, it is a sad reflection on town government. The non-functioning Ethics Board should determine whether Mr. Desso violated the Ethics Code by acting to gain an unwarranted advantage and enhance his political standing by divulging documents to the media he obtained as a result of his official position prior to their disclosure at town meetings. The Town Ethics Law provides that “no town employee shall engage in any professional activity which will require him to disclose confidential information which he has gained by reason of his official position or authority.” Mr. Desso acted in an unethical manner by prematurely releasing the report, with its erroneous and libelous conclusion. As a Councilman, he should have known the report contained a false conclusion causing irreparable harm to my professional reputation by claiming I created an Unauthorized Bank Account”. He continued this unprofessional conduct by publicly alleging that criminal activity had occurred by calling twice for a “Forensic Audit”, a tool used by law enforcement to gather evidence when a crime is suspected. This was done to justify his vote to terminate me as Comptroller, so that he could fill the position with a politically connected appointee. Had Mr. Desso not leaked this document in advance of its review by the Finance Committee, Town Board and Legal Counsel, he and the public he was attempting to improperly influence would have realized that applicable sections of Town Law did not support the conclusion of an “Unauthorized Bank Account.” ~Michael Strenka, Former NG Comptroller
We all know that it is imperative we provide our youth with hands-on learning experiences to ensure global competitiveness and prepare the next generation of science, engineering, and technology leaders; and 4-H is doing just that. Two local teens from Rensselaer County 4-H, Chris Degener and Gregory Kopache, were chosen to join the first team of New York State Science Ambassadors. The team of five visited with our state legislatures to show them how 4-H has given them the opportunity to explore science, engineering and technology and how they use that to help improve their communities. District 108’s new Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin was one of many that stopped to hear how 4-H members across the state are using G.P.S. to map out fire hydrants, historical monuments, and local farmer’s markets in their community. If you would like more information, or would like to join 4-H, call Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rensselaer County at 2724210 or your respective county’s Cornell Cooperative Extension office.

KIPP: KNOWLEDGE IS POWER PROGRAM Letter to the Editor: It has been brought to my attention by a young single mother of a 12 year old boy in Albany what a great advantage the KIPP: Tech Valley School has been for them. In August, 2005, KIPP Tech Valley started with the promise that hard work would lead to academic success and the road to college. Now after 5 years, the KIPP Tech Valley students have made great academic gains proving “no short cuts” philosophy pays off. The KIPP program structured with high expectations and with more time in the classroom has its merits. On last year’s NYS math and ELA (English Language Arts) assessments, KIPP 8th graders outperformed the state average in English Language Arts, and outperformed the state average in mathematics. In 2009, KIPP: Tech Valley was one of only 11 schools in the entire state to receive 100% passing results in both math and ELA on the NYS Exams. Students at KIPP commit to a three week summer session, attend school from 7:30am to 5pm, Monday through Friday, participating in academic and extracurricular classes on alternating Saturdays and complete up to 2 hours of homework each night. Dedicated teachers are available by cell phone after hours for homework help and questions from parents. KIPP (Knowledge is Power Program) is a national network of 99 free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools in 22 states and Washington, DC that prepares students for success in college and in life. Nationally, 80% of KIPP Alumni have matriculated to college as compared to a national average for low income students of 8 percent. An author wrote in “The New York Times Magazine” that “the most influential schools are the ones run by KIPP”. ~Respectfully submitted, Al Hayner

When scholar athlete Melissa Roff grows up, her goal is to become a doctor, join the Peace Corps, and work with Doctors without Borders. “Basically I want to experience as much of the world as I can while helping people along the way.” Currently Melissa is playing varsity lacrosse for the first time since she did not do it last year. Melissa has been playing lacrosse since 7th grade. She first started because all of her friends were doing it, but now she genuinely enjoys the sport. In the fall, Melissa played tennis for our varsity tennis team. Melissa was ranked number 2 on her team this past season. In Melissa’s free time she hangs out with friends, reads, eats, paints, and watches television. Melissa maintains a 95.6 grade point average while taking challenging courses such as: Advance Placement Biology, Advance Placement English, Calculus, Spanish 5, Participation in Government, Economics and Senior Portfolio. “I’ve been accepted to SUNY Geneseo, Binghamton and RIT. “If I don’t have a sudden change of heart again, then in the fall I’d like to attend Geneseo.” Melissa will major in Biology and minor in Spanish. Melissa’s brother Stephan has inspired her to be the best person she can be— “He rocks!”

Activities of the All Sports Club include sponsoring the Athletic Hall of Fame and providing scholarships for student athletes. We now find that the mere existence of many of our student athletic programs face uncertainty. Without a doubt, unprecedented times of economic hardship lie ahead for all school districts within New York State, including the EGCSD. While our Board of Education recognizes the importance of athletics in our district and community, they also have the difficult task of balancing non-mandated programs with maintaining a reasonable budget. Given this current financial climate, the Columbia All Sports Club has committed to raising funds with the goal of keeping each and every athletic program available to all students for the 2011-2012 school year. While it is unknown which or how many programs might be cut from the budget at this time, we feel it is necessary to start these fund-raising activities now in order to be prepared. We sincerely thank you for past support and hope you share our passion for the future. We are asking alumni, local businessowners, parents and community members to help Columbia All Sports Club in meeting this goal to sustain our athletic programs. Columbia All Sports Club is a 501 © non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible. We are seeking donations from each Alumni from our Athletic Dept. Even a donation of $5.00 or 10.00 from each Alumni could help save a program. Our Student Athletes, parents and Coaches will be out fund-raising throughout the community, please support our athletes. There will be a coin drop in April at True Value from 8 am to 6 pm, come support our athletes, and True Value! ~Columbia All Sports Club

LEGISLATORS MOURN PASSING OF GENE EATON Members of the Rensselaer County Legislature majority mourned the passing of former County Sheriff and Troy Mayor Eugene “Gene” Eaton. Chairman of the Legislature Martin Reid noted Eaton’s dedication to public service, beginning with the New York State Police, County Sheriff, City of Troy Mayor and work as a member of the Sergeant at Arms staff at the New York State Senate. “Gene Eaton had a long and distinguished record of service to residents of Rensselaer County, the City of Troy and New York State. We join his many friends and family in mourning his passing,” said Reid. Legislator Thomas Walsh Sr. attended Troy High School with Eaton and had maintained contact with Eaton during the years. “Gene loved public service, and that showed in his career, from the State Police to the Sheriff’s Department, to the Troy City Council and later years with the State Senate. Gene was always a gentleman and a good neighbor and friend,” said Walsh. Majority Leader Ken Herrington served in the County Legislature during Eaton’s service as Sheriff. Eaton regularly advocated for an expansion of the county jail at a time when over-crowding was becoming an issue. “Gene Eaton served as sheriff during some tumultuous times. Gene always made an effort to be professional and keep the department headed in a positive direction. He worked very hard to keep county residents protected as Sheriff and to ensure public safety services were efficiently provided,” said Herrington. Legislators said they will introduce a resolution mourning the passing of Gene Eaton for a future monthly legislative meeting.

DEACON QUINN TO LEAD STATIONS OF THE CROSS IN NEW LEBANON: On Friday, March 25th, the Seniors’ Ministry of Immaculate Conception/St. Joseph Parish, New Lebanon, will host their regular monthly get-together at 11:30AM, starting in the main church at 732 US Route 20, New Lebanon. Deacon Peter Quinn will lead the traditional Lenten prayer known as “Stations of the Cross,” and all in the community are invited to attend. Following the devotion, all will be welcomed at the parish hall for a hot lunch and a discussion about hair care. Because the weather caused a cancellation of the February program, stylist Deb McLaughlin returns this month to provide information about hair care as it is affected by the aging process. She will speak about cut, color and permanent wave techniques, as well as some of the effects of medication on the structure and growth of hair. Deb is the owner of Deb’s Shear Perfection salon in New Lebanon and has been a stylist for more than 20 years. Everyone from the community is invited for Stations of the Cross, lunch, and Deb’s presentation, at no charge. Please call Mary Linton, 518-733-0469, for more information.

purrfect kitty
Off-duty Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office transport officer, Jason Ring, and RCSO nurse, Elaine Young, recently came to the aid of a local teenager after the young man began experiencing a severe diabetic episode while driving and eventually crashing down an embankment on I-90 East near Exit 10. The teen escaped injury when he was pulled from his burning vehicle by Officer Ring and another motorist, and then assisted by Young. As Officer Ring approached the vehicle on foot, it burst into flames from underneath. Officer Ring and another motorist who also stopped worked to pry the victim’s locked fingers from the steering wheel and carry him to safety. Coincidentally, Elaine Young, a former ICU nurse and now a Nurse Supervisor at the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office, was traveling nearby, stopped and also rushed to the aid of the driver. “I saw the flames, but just reacted and used my experience as a nurse to assess the situation and respond as quickly as I could,” said Young who then quickly determined the driver was experiencing a severe diabetic episode. “This was a tremendous rescue effort,” said Rensselaer County Sheriff Jack Mahar. “Vehicular crashes of this type, involving fire and the potential for explosion, make Officer Ring’s and nurse Young’s actions that much more heroic. “They were just on their way home from work, but stopped to help a stranger. They could plainly see the risks to their own safety, but did it anyway. They are a wonderful example of the good people we have working here at the Sheriff’s Office. I’m very proud of them as well as of all of the responders.”

Mikki is a beautiful 2 year old long-haired gray cat with white tuxedo markings. Mikki is considered a special-needs kitty, as she is very shy and needs a special person to work with her to get her to blossom. We got her as a kitten from a feral mom cat, so she is timid with people. However, she is very sweet and affectionate once she trusts you. Mikki gets along well with other cats and loves to run and play. She would love to have a chance at a “forever home” with a good person or family. Can you be the special person for this special kitty? Like all Purrfect Companion kitties, Mikki is up-to-date on routine shots, house trained and spayed. For more information on Mikki, please contact one of the following Purrfect Companions’ representatives: Jane, at 4367450 or at giveadam@verizon.net; or Maryann at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all volunteer rescue organization. We are always looking for good volunteers to help with the kitties or assist at our adoption clinics. If you’d like to donate a little time to these worthy animals, please give us a call at 463-8709. Our adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We know we have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!
